Cognitive behavioral grief therapy

From a REBT perspective, loss through death is viewed as an intense negative and traumatic Activating event which effects the Belief system and related emotional and behavioral Consequences. Grief, then, is seen as a normal reaction and the process that follows is a necessary one characterized by the bereaved attempting to reorganize a shattered belief system. In the present paper a distinction between functional and dysfunctional grief is made. Based on Ellis' differentiation between iB's and RB's, typical irrational grief-related beliefs are identified (with specific focus on pain related ones). Various REBT interventions aimed at facilitating a more functional, healthier course of grief are suggested.     

Factors influencing self-rated fear to a novel animal

Abstract

This study attempted to assess some of the factors that influence self-rated fear of a novel animal. Subjects were: (1) shown a picture of an animal that was novel to them; (2) given a brief snippet of information about it; and then (3) asked to make a variety of assessments about their likely reaction to the animal. Self-reported levels of fear to the novel animal were significantly higher if subjects were told that people were generally frightened of the animal. However, the extent to which individual levels of disgust sensitivity informed fear to the novel animal was dependent on: (1) the information that subjects were given about the reasons why other people might fear the animal; and (2) the interaction between disgust sensitivity levels and other beliefs about the animal (such as beliefs about being attacked by the animal or being made ill by the animal). Although disgust sensitivity has been found to be a factor important in generating fear to fear-relevant animals, the present study suggests that it also plays an important role in informing fear to a novel animal.     

Factors influencing child witnesses

This study elucidates how professional intervention can influence children's abilities to report accurately about abuse experiences. Based on knowledge acquired through previous research and the present case study, the study shows how methods of information acquisition used during preliminary investigations can negatively affect child reports. The case study emanates from a larger study of 193 allegedly sexually abused children. Examination of these police interviews shows that 55 children were interviewed more than once and their reports were exposed to possible professional influences before and during the preliminary investigation. The case study reveals the inadequate management of a child witness. The findings indicate that police officers and psychologists should avoid suggestive interventions and co-ordinate their efforts during the preliminary investigation in order to safeguard the children's as well as the suspects' legal interests. This paper points out the need for implementing interview interventions that can enhance children's abilities to report accurately about abuse experiences.     

Factors influencing failure to show for a family evaluation

Abstract

An important issue in clinical practice concerns clients' failure to keep their initial evaluation appointments, which has been termed defection (Shapiro and Budman, 1973). Research findings and clinical impressions suggest that client defection can be related to three sets of factors: actuarial variables, client psychological and motivational variables, and client-clinician interaction prior to the initial appointment (Rubinstein and Lorr, 1956; Garfield, 1971). Among the actuarial variables, the following have been suggested as being related to clients' defection: referral source, distance client must travel for the appointment, client socioeconomic status (SES), and waiting time (Brill and Storow, 1960; Raynes and Warren, 1971; Lorion, 1973).     

Factors influencing hierarchy in a captive herd of eland Taurotragus oryx

Social interactions in a captive herd of 13 elands were investigated in an enclosed zoo population. Data from focal and scan sampling provided dominance rank, indices of affiliative interaction and association at rest. While there was a tendence for age and dominance to be positively correlated among females, an effect of matrilineal genealogy was also observed. This effect could be related to the affiliative interaction between mother and young causing offspring to share the hierarchical position of their mother. © 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc.     

Recent developments in family behavioral marital therapy

This paper reviews recent developments in the area of behavioral marital therapy (BMT). New information is summarized regarding the long-term efficacy of BMT and the identification of predictors of positive response to treatment and to relapse. Finally, new applications of BMT techniques are reviewed (e.g., spouse-involved therapies as the sole treatment for presenting problems in which marital distress is not the primary focus such as anxiety and affective disorders).     

Factors influencing perceived angular velocity

The assumption that humans are able to perceive and process-angular kinematics is critical to many structure-from-motion and optical flow models. The current studies investigate this sensitivity, and examine several factors likely to influence angular velocity perception. In particular, three factors are considered: (1) the extent to which perceived angular velocity is determined by edge transitions of surface elements, (2) the extent to which angular velocity estimates are influenced by instantaneous linear velocities of surface elements, and (3) whether element-velocity effects are related to three-dimensional (3-D) tangential velocities or to two-dimensional (2-D) image velocities. Edge-transition rate biased angular velocity estimates only when edges were highly salient. Element velocities influenced perceived angular velocity; this bias was related to 2-D image velocity rather than 3-D tangential velocity. Despite these biases, however, judgments were most strongly determined by the true angular velocity. Sensitivity to this higher order motion parameter was surprisingly good, for rotations both in depth (y-axis) and parallel to the line of sight (z-axis).
