This study investigated multisensory interactions in the perception of auditory and visual motion. When auditory and visual apparent motion streams are presented concurrently in opposite directions, participants often fail to discriminate the direction of motion of the auditory stream, whereas perception of the visual stream is unaffected by the direction of auditory motion (Experiment 1). This asymmetry persists even when the perceived quality of apparent motion is equated for the 2 modalities (Experiment 2). Subsequently, it was found that this visual modulation of auditory motion is caused by an illusory reversal in the perceived direction of sounds (Experiment 3). This "dynamic capture" effect occurs over and above ventriloquism among static events (Experiments 4 and 5), and it generalizes to continuous motion displays (Experiment 6). These data are discussed in light of related multisensory phenomena and their support for a "modality appropriateness" interpretation of multisensory integration in motion perception.

This study examined the multisensory integration of visual and auditory motion information using a methodology designed to single out perceptual integration processes from post-perceptual influences. We assessed the threshold stimulus onset asynchrony (SOA) at which the relative directions (same vs. different) of simultaneously presented visual and auditory apparent motion streams could no longer be discriminated (Experiment 1). This threshold was higher than the upper threshold for direction discrimination (left vs. right) of each individual modality when presented in isolation (Experiment 2). The poorer performance observed in bimodal displays was interpreted as a consequence of automatic multisensory integration of motion information. Experiment 3 supported this interpretation by ruling out task differences as the explanation for the higher threshold in Experiment 1. Together these data provide empirical support for the view that multisensory integration of motion signals can occur at a perceptual level.

Although sensory perception and neurobiology are traditionally investigated one modality at a time, real world behaviour and perception are driven by the integration of information from multiple sensory sources. Mounting evidence suggests that the neural underpinnings of multisensory integration extend into early sensory processing. This article examines the notion that neocortical operations are essentially multisensory. We first review what is known about multisensory processing in higher-order association cortices and then discuss recent anatomical and physiological findings in presumptive unimodal sensory areas. The pervasiveness of multisensory influences on all levels of cortical processing compels us to reconsider thinking about neural processing in unisensory terms. Indeed, the multisensory nature of most, possibly all, of the neocortex forces us to abandon the notion that the senses ever operate independently during real-world cognition.

To understand the development of sensory processes, it is necessary not only to look at the maturation of each of the sensory systems in isolation, but also to study the development of the nervous systems capacity to integrate information across the different senses. It is through such multisensory integration that a coherent perceptual gestalt of the world comes to be generated. In the adult brain, multisensory convergence and integration take place at a number of brainstem and cortical sites, where individual neurons have been found that respond to multisensory stimuli with patterns of activation that depend on the nature of the stimulus complex and the intrinsic properties of the neuron. Parallels between the responses of these neurons and multisensory behavior and perception suggest that they are the substrates that underlie these cognitive processes. In both cat and monkey models, the development of these multisensory neurons and the appearance of their integrative capacity is a gradual postnatal process. For subcortical structures (i.e., the superior colliculus) this maturational process appears to be gated by the appearance of functional projections from regions of association cortex. The slow postnatal maturation of multisensory processes, coupled with its dependency on functional corticotectal connections, suggested that the development of multisensory integration may be tied to sensory experiences acquired during postnatal life. In support of this, eliminating experience in one sensory modality (i.e., vision) during postnatal development severely compromises the integration of multisensory cues. Research is ongoing to better elucidate the critical development antecedents for the emergence of normal multisensory capacity.Edited by Marie-Hélène Giard and Mark WallaceThis revised version was published in May 2004 with corrections to Fig. 1.

We investigated whether the "unity assumption," according to which an observer assumes that two different sensory signals refer to the same underlying multisensory event, influences the multisensory integration of audiovisual speech stimuli. Syllables (Experiments 1, 3, and 4) or words (Experiment 2) were presented to participants at a range of different stimulus onset asynchronies using the method of constant stimuli. Participants made unspeeded temporal order judgments regarding which stream (either auditory or visual) had been presented first. The auditory and visual speech stimuli in Experiments 1-3 were either gender matched (i.e., a female face presented together with a female voice) or else gender mismatched (i.e., a female face presented together with a male voice). In Experiment 4, different utterances from the same female speaker were used to generate the matched and mismatched speech video clips. Measuring in terms of the just noticeable difference the participants in all four experiments found it easier to judge which sensory modality had been presented first when evaluating mismatched stimuli than when evaluating the matched-speech stimuli. These results therefore provide the first empirical support for the "unity assumption" in the domain of the multisensory temporal integration of audiovisual speech stimuli.

Normal aging is associated with deficits in working memory processes. However, the majority of research has focused on storage or inhibitory processes using unimodal paradigms, without addressing their relationships using different sensory modalities. Hence, we pursued two objectives. First, was to examine the effects of aging on storage and inhibitory processes. Second, was to evaluate aging effects on multisensory integration of visual and auditory stimuli. To this end, young and older participants performed a multimodal task for visual and auditory pairs of stimuli with increasing memory load at encoding and interference during retention. Our results showed an age-related increased vulnerability to interrupting and distracting interference reflecting inhibitory deficits related to the off-line reactivation and on-line suppression of relevant and irrelevant information, respectively. Storage capacity was impaired with increasing task demands in both age groups. Additionally, older adults showed a deficit in multisensory integration, with poorer performance for new visual compared to new auditory information.

Previous studies of multisensory integration have often stressed the beneficial effects that may arise when information concerning an event arrives via different sensory modalities at the same time, as, for example, exemplified by research on the redundant target effect (RTE). By contrast, studies of the Colavita visual dominance effect (e.g., [Colavita, F. B. (1974). Human sensory dominance. Perception & Psychophysics, 16, 409–412]) highlight the inhibitory consequences of the competition between signals presented simultaneously in different sensory modalities instead. Although both the RTE and the Colavita effect are thought to occur at early sensory levels and the stimulus conditions under which they are typically observed are very similar, the interplay between these two opposing behavioural phenomena (facilitation vs. competition) has yet to be addressed empirically. We hypothesized that the dissociation may reflect two of the fundamentally different ways in which humans can perceive concurrent auditory and visual stimuli. In Experiment 1, we demonstrated both multisensory facilitation (RTE) and the Colavita visual dominance effect using exactly the same audiovisual displays, by simply changing the task from a speeded detection task to a speeded modality discrimination task. Meanwhile, in Experiment 2, the participants exhibited multisensory facilitation when responding to visual targets and multisensory inhibition when responding to auditory targets while keeping the task constant. These results therefore indicate that both multisensory facilitation and inhibition can be demonstrated in reaction to the same bimodal event.
