We describe an early operant conditioning chamber fabricated by Harvard University instrument maker Ralph Gerbrands and shipped to Japan in 1952 in response to a request of Professor B. F. Skinner by Japanese psychologists. It is a rare example, perhaps the earliest still physically existing, of such a chamber for use with pigeons. Although the overall structure and many of the components are similar to contemporary pigeon chambers, several differences are noted and contrasted to evolutionary changes in this most important laboratory tool in the experimental analysis of behavior. The chamber also is testimony to the early internationalization of behavior analysis.  相似文献

Abstract

The present study evaluated a single session operant conditioning of blood pressure in borderline hypertensives. A double blind randomized two period (each lasting for 20 minutes) cross over study consisting of a treatment (operant conditioning of mean arterial blood pressure) and a control condition (heart rate) was performed. Sequence of treatments was randomly assigned. Fourteen borderline hypertensive subjects participated and were trained to decrease their continuously measured blood pressure (Finapres) and heart rate. Subjects receiving blood pressure feedback during the first session showed a significant (4.3 mmHg) decrease in diastolic blood pressure. In contrast, subjects receiving blood pressure training during the second session showed a non-significant increase in diastolic blood pressure. Treatment consisting of more sessions is a promising adjunct to antihypertensive regimens.  相似文献

The effects of feature identity in an operant serial feature-negative discrimination (F1 T1−, T1+) were examined in two experiments with rats. In Experiment 1, rats were trained with two operant serial feature-negative discriminations in which different operants were reinforced during two auditory target cues (T1 and T2). The features (F1 and F2) were two neutral cues (visual or auditory stimuli), two motivationally significant cues (flavored sucrose solutions, also used as the operant reinforcers), or one neutral and one motivationally significant cue. Experiment 1 showed that discrimination acquisition, transfer performance, and feature–target interval testing were facilitated with a flavored sucrose feature. Experiment 2 showed that flavored sucrose-alone presentations, more than flavored sucrose trained in a pseudodiscrimination (F1 T1+, T1+), shared several similarities with a standard flavored sucrose feature. The results suggest flavored sucrose rapidly acquires inhibitory properties, which facilitates operant serial feature-negative discrimination performance.  相似文献

Operant extinction near zero   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0       下载免费PDF全文
Extinction in the presence of each of two stimuli reduces the rate of pecking in the presence of each of them to zero or near zero. When, however, pecking a third stimulus is reinforced, responding is resumed under the other stimuli, and more responses are made to the stimulus least associated with extinction.  相似文献

A procedure is described for establishing an operant response in goats. The operanda are two lucite panels which can be transilluminated. The goats press the panels with their muzzles and are reinforced with whole oats. All six subjects showed reliable and accurate performance in brightness discrimination, including cessation of responding during time-out periods.  相似文献

Forty-eight middle-class fathers having their first child were divided into three groups: An Experimental Group received a demonstration of physical and behavioral characteristics of their own infants resulting in a doubling of the usual time for interaction during the first two days. A Hospital Group spent the same amount of time viewing a prepared videotape of the same characteristics of a newborn infant who was not theirs. An Office Control Group, without experimental intervention, was recruited to control for effects of demand characteristics of the experimental situation. All three groups attended their infants' one-month well-baby examination where outcome measures were obtained. Analyses of variance showed no differences between groups on demographic or pregnancy variables. Further, 108 analyses of variance for 36 father and infant behaviors scored from videotapes did not reveal significant group differences. It is argued that in addition to amount of early contact and sex of parent, crucial socioeconomic factors need to be considered.  相似文献

An operant conditioning technique for use with passerine birds is described. Two redwinged blackbirds were successfully conditioned to perch-hop for food reinforcement. Continuous reinforcement and fixed-ratio schedules involving substantial ratio requirements were used to maintain this response. The behavior of the two redwinged blackbirds was comparable to that of more conventional organisms working on similar schedules of reinforcement.  相似文献

Tone detection thresholds for a 10-kHz tone in NMRI mice were determined in psychoacoustic experiments using both a constant-stimuli procedure and a two-down/one-up adaptive-tracking procedure in the same subjects and applying identical threshold criteria (70.7% response probability). Constant-stimuli thresholds were on average 24 dB lower than adaptive-tracking thresholds, and there was a trend indicating that constant-stimuli thresholds were less variable than adaptive-tracking thresholds. Furthermore, in the constant-stimuli procedure the number of trials constituting the psychometric function could be reduced from 100 to 50 trials without a large loss of accuracy of threshold determination. In the constant-stimuli procedure, the threshold value was affected by the threshold criteria. The lowest and least variable constant-stimuli thresholds were obtained by applying signal detection theory and a criterion ofd′=1. Thus, the constant-stimuli procedure in combination with signal detection theory appears to be better suited than the adaptive-tracking procedure to determine auditory sensory thresholds.  相似文献

In the context of evaluative conditioning, the effects of additional presentations of the unconditioned stimulus (US) prior to conditioning (US preexposure) or after conditioning (US postexposure) were examined using between- and within-subjects control conditions. Two experiments that differed with respect to the nationality of the subjects were conducted. In both experiments, US-alone presentations reduced the magnitude of the evaluative response. The US pre- and postexposure effects were observed in subjects classified as aware as well as in subjects classified as unaware of the experimental contingencies. Another finding is that the evaluative conditioning procedure described by Martin and Levey (1978; Levey & Martin, 1975) resulted in reliable conditioning effects also in an American sample, thus extending the scope of that special evaluative conditioning paradigm. The findings are discussed in the context of recent models of classical and evaluative conditioning. Especially, the unexpected US postexposure effect gives rise to speculations concerning the learning process underlying evaluative conditioning.  相似文献

Anticipating the future has a decided evolutionary advantage, and researchers have found many evolutionarily conserved mechanisms by which humans and animals learn to predict future events. Researchers often study such learned behavior using conditioning experiments. The marine snail Aplysia has been at the forefront of research into the cellular and molecular mechanisms of classical conditioning. Recently, Aplysia has also gained a reputation as a valuable model system for operant reward learning. Its feeding behavior can be operantly conditioned in the intact animal as well as in reduced preparations of the nervous system. The reward signal relies on dopamine transmission and acts in conjunction with activity in an identified neuron (B51) to bring about operant memory.  相似文献

In a monitoring situation eye movements were required in order for signals to be presented. Detection of signals was the reinforcement. A multiple schedule of fixed-interval reinforcement, differential reinforcement of low rate, and fixed-ratio reinforcement was established for eye movements. Results demonstrated that an eye movement can act as an operant controlled by its consequences. Operant control of eye movements has important implications for human factor analysts concerned with "attention".  相似文献
