Subjects received one of eight treatments: practice at increasing heart rate with heart-rate feedback, practice at decreasing heart rate with heart-rate feedback, practice at increasing heart rate without heart-rate feedback, practice at decreasing heart rate without heart-rate feedback, practice at increasing respiration rate with respiratory feedback, practice at decreasing respiration rate with respiratory feedback, practice at increasing respiration rate with respiratory instructions only, practice at decreasing respiration rate with respiratory instructions only. Heart rate, Respiration rate, and Respiration depth were measured. Analysis indicated that subjects who controlled respiration with respiratory feedback reliably increased and decreased heart rate; subjects who controlled respiration with respiratory instructions only reliably increased but not decreased heart rate; subjects in the respiratory-feedback conditions showed higher heart-rate increase and decrease than heart-rate increase and decrease of subjects in the other six conditions.  相似文献

In the present study, subjects were administered 16 biofeedback sessions, during which they were trained to significantly increase and decrease their heart rates. Before and immediately following each biofeedback training session, state anxiety was evaluated in subjects by use of the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory. Results indicated that heart-rate slowing performance was associated with a significant decrease in state anxiety; heart-rate speeding performance was associated with an increase in state anxiety. The implications of these findings for further investigation of theories of emotion, and the role played by physiological arousal, are discussed.  相似文献

Thirty young women participated in an experiment in which heart rate, blood pressure, respiration rate, skin conductance level and palmar sweat index were monitored at rest and during the administration of mental arithmetic, mirror drawing and cold pressor tasks. The accuracy of perception of somatic states was estimated by calculating within-subject correlations between four bodily sensations (racing heart, high blood pressure, shortness of breath and sweaty hands) and corresponding physiological parameters, assessed on eight occasions during the experiment. The accuracy of heart rate perception was highest, with a mean correlation between actual heart rate and ratings of racing heart of 0.76 and 66% of participants showing significant within-subject effects. The mean accuracy was 0.55 for systolic blood pressure, 0.48 for respiration rate, 0.47 for skin conductance level, and 0.64 for palmar sweat index. Accurate perception across physiological parameters did not cluster within individuals, and was not dependent on the range either of physiological changes or sensation ratings. Trait anxiety was not significantly associated with accuracy of somatic perception. Subjects with high trait anxiety reported larger increases in shortness of breath during tasks than did low anxious subjects, but this was not reflected in objective physiological measures. Information-seeking coping style, indexed by the monitoring scale of the Miller Behavioral Style Scale, was related to the accuracy of perception of skin conductance level and heart rate. The use of within-subject correlational strategies for assessing individual differences in perception of bodily states is discussed.  相似文献

Procedures designed to affect respiration rate and amplitude were assessed for 4 groups of 8 subjects each. The groups were exposed to combinations of procedures providing feedback for decreasing respiration amplitude, pacing respiration rate, and instructions on rate and amplitude of breathing. After an initial baseline, effects were examined during both treatment and self-management phases for respiratory activity and concurrent heart-rate and electromyogram activity. Reliable effects of pacing on respiration rate, and a slight, but non-significant effect on amplitude were observed. No effects were observed for any heart-rate or electromyogram measures.  相似文献

We examined whether the heart rate attenuation resulting from a single trial of biofeedback during exercise occurs without any changes in oxygen consumption (VO2), ventilation volume (V(E)), and mean arterial blood pressure (M(AP)) although these variables are essential determinants for the heart-rate response during exercise. 35 subjects exercised on a cycle ergometer under two conditions while they exercised only (Control) or were trying to decrease the heart-rate response as low as possible by monitoring their own heart-rate responses as Single trial of biofeedback signals. 17 subjects could attenuate their heart rate (Can group), and their heart-rate reduction during Single trial of biofeedback was 5+/-1 bpm. The remaining subjects were unable to reduce heart rate (Cannot group). The heart-rate attenuation during Single trial of biofeedback in the Can group occurred independently of changes in VO2 and MAP but was accompanied by a significant decrease in V(E) and rating of perceived exertion (RPE). However, there was a similar decrease in V(E) in the Cannot group. These findings suggested that the heart-rate attenuation during Single trial of biofeedback was not induced by the metabolic demand of VO2 and the regulations of M(AP) and V(E) during exercise. Other mechanisms, which are probably related to the reduction of RPE, might play an important role in the heart-rate attenuation during a Single trial of biofeedback.  相似文献

The present study was designed to test whether or not the use of representativeness and causality heuristics in decision-making results from insufficient or nonvigilant information processing rather than from an inherent deficiency in human information-processing ability. It was hypothesized that subjects who were distracted while making predictions (field-dependent subjects who were continuously aware of other subjects' performance in the experimental session) would fail to use the base rate to a greater extent than would nondistracted subjects (field-dependent subjects who were not aware of the other subjects' performance, and field-independent subjects). As predicted, when other subjects' performance was public, field-independent subjects conformed more to the base rate than did field-dependent subjects. In the private condition, however, the opposite pattern emerged. The results were discussed in terms of the drive theory of social facilitation and non-vigilant information processing.We would like to thank Matthew R. Analogue social-stress situations have assumed an important role in the assessment of social anxiety. However, psychophysiological assessment of social anxiety in these laboratory situations has produced inconsistent results. Notably, the empirical relationship between autonomic reactivity and behavioral indices of social anxiety has fluctuated widely. The present study examined the relationship between heart rate and behavioral ratings of social anxiety in a normal college-student sample utilizing a methodology which (a) addressed individual differences, (b) utilized a relatively unobtrusive heart-rate monitoring system, and (c) assessed time-lag relationships between the two measures. Cross-lagged correlations for the full sample of 25 subjects and a subset of heart-rate reactives showed large intersubject variability between the measures. The results support the lack of convergence between the two modes of measurement when subjects are considered as an aggregate.  相似文献

We investigated cardiac perception in panic disorder with both self-report and objective measures. In Study 1, 120 patients with panic disorder, 86 infrequent panickers, and 38 patients with other anxiety disorders reported greater cardiac and gastrointestinal awareness than 62 normal control subjects. Subjects with panic attacks reported greater cardiac awareness, but not gastrointestinal awareness, than those with other anxiety disorders. Studies 2 and 3 included a test of heart rate perception in which subjects silently counted their heart-beats without taking their pulse. In Study 2, 65 panic disorder patients showed better performance than 50 infrequent panickers, 27 patients with simple phobias, and 46 normal control subjects. No group differences were found in ability to estimate time intervals. In Study 3, 13 patients with panic disorder and 15 with generalized anxiety disorder showed better heart rate perception than 16 depressed patients.  相似文献

采用认知考试焦虑量表从550名高一学生中筛选出75名不同考试焦虑水平的学生,运用Deese-Roediger-McDermott范式(DRM范式)诱发错误记忆,考察考试焦虑对错误记忆的影响。结果显示:(1)DRM范式能有效诱发个体对未呈现的关键诱词产生错误记忆;(2)中等考试焦虑水平的学生产生的错误记忆最少;(3)高考试焦虑水平的学生在高唤醒情境下对关键诱词的再认错误率显著高于中、低唤醒情境下的个体。使学生保持中度考试焦虑能减少错误记忆,提高认知成绩。  相似文献

Longitudinal series of photographs of faces of secondary school students were used to evaluate observers’ ability to perceive age. Information in individual stimuli was manipulated by masking out parts of the photographs, while information provided by the relations among stimuli was manipulated by task conditions. The ability to perceive relative age was assessed in two tasks requiring subjects to order photographs by age. Absolute age perception was studied in a third task requiring age estimates in years to photographs presented one at a time. While judgments were beyond chance accuracy in all combinations of masking and task conditions, a decrease in either type of information generally produced a decrease in accuracy.

The auditory perception of temporal and spectral information was studied in subjects with lesions in the temporoparietal region of the left (LH group), or right (RH group) hemisphere (n = 5 in each group) and in five normal controls. The temporal tasks included gap detection and two complex pattern perception tasks in which subjects had to identify the placement of the two closest tones (separated by the shortest interval) within a sequence of six tones. The spectral tasks involved pitch matching and frequency discrimination. The results showed a "double dissociation": (1) the LH group was impaired in their ability to perceive temporal information, but the perception of spectral information was normal, and (2) the RH group was impaired in their ability to perceive spectral information, but the perception of temporal information was normal. The findings are consistent with the notion that temporal processing is a function of left-hemisphere structures and that spectral processing is a function of right-hemisphere structures.  相似文献

To resolve certain empirical and theoretical difficulties concerning, primarily, the significance of phasic heart-rate deceleration prior to reaction signals, 48 children were employed to perform in simple reaction-time tasks while speed, heart rate, head movement, gross movement, and blink activity were recorded. The indeory intervals and level of incentives. Reaction time varied with incentive, with preparatory interval and mode of presentation. Phasic heart-rate deceleration varied with the intervals but not incentive or mode of presentation. There was little relation between deceleration and RT. Heart rate and somatic movement measures (especially of blinking) were roughly concordant at a group level but did not correlate.  相似文献

Abstract The effects of a 12-week exercise-training program on cognitive, somatic, and behavioral anxiety and on heart rate responses to evaluative stress were scrutinized in 89 subjects randomly assigned to an experimental (exercise) or a control group. The training program consisted of exercises that were aimed to the improvement of the general physical fitness (i.e., strength, flexibility, and endurance). Following the 12-week training period, exercising subjects showed improved motor skill capacity as well as higher VO(2) max. In an anxiety inciting test situation, that consisted of the video-taped delivery of a 5-min speech, a mental arithmetic and a fine motor task, exercising subjects showed more favourable responses than control subjects in three ways: (a) they exhibited lower behavioral anxiety during the anticipation phase of the three stressors, (b) they reported lower cognitive and somatic anxiety during the anxiety provoking situation, and (c) their heart rate recovered faster, in contrast to both their baseline heart rate and the control subjects' heart rate, from the stress episode. These results demonstrate that a fitness-oriented exercise program has anxiolytic properties. They also provide a primary evidence that overt behavioral anxiety, as opposed to the usually measured self-reported anxiety, may be affected by exercise.  相似文献

Tone paired with stimulation of the nucleus basalis (NB) induces behavioral memory that is specific to the frequency of the conditioned stimulus (CS), assessed by cardiac and respiration behavior during post-training stimulus generalization testing. This paper focuses on CS-specific spectral and temporal features of conditioned EEG activation. Adult male Sprague-Dawley rats, chronically implanted with a stimulating electrode in the NB and a recording electrode in the ipsilateral auditory cortex, received either tone (6kHz, 70dB, 2s) paired with co-terminating stimulation of the nucleus basalis (0.2s, 100Hz, 80-105 microA, ITI approximately 45s) or unpaired presentation of the stimuli (approximately 200 trials/day for approximately 14 days). CS-specificity was tested 24h post-training by presenting test tones to obtain generalization gradients for the EEG, heart rate, and respiration. Behavioral memory was evident in cardiac and respiratory responses that were maximal to the CS frequency of 6kHz. FFT analyses of tone-elicited changes of power in the delta, theta, alpha, beta1, beta2, and gamma bands in the paired group revealed that conditioned EEG activation (shift from lower to higher frequencies) was differentially spectrally and temporally specific: theta, and alpha to a lesser extent, decreased selectively to 6kHz during and for several seconds following tone presentation while gamma power increased transiently during and after 6kHz. Delta exhibited no CS-specificity and the beta bands showed transient specificity only after several seconds. The unpaired group exhibited neither CS-specific behavioral nor EEG effects. Thus, stimulus generalization tests reveal that conditioned EEG activation is not unitary but rather reflects CS-specificity, with band-selective markers for specific, associative neural processes in learning and memory.  相似文献

We examined whether a single trial of heart-rate biofeedback was effective to attenuate heart-rate responses during ramp exercise despite a lack of biofeedback conditioning. 35 healthy women exercised in two trials while they tried to attenuate their heart rate by watching biofeedback signals or they only exercised without biofeedback signals (Control trial). 17 subjects were able to attenuate the heart rate during Biofeedback trial (Can group) whereas the remaining subjects were not (Cannot group). In the Can group, the magnitude of heart-rate attenuation in all exercise time was equivalent to 11+/-3% of the preexercise heart rate. Since the heart-rate reduction was similar to that achieved after the heart-rate biofeedback conditioning in previous studies, it is likely that the single trial of heart-rate biofeedback was effective for almost half the subjects to attenuate the heart-rate responses during ramp exercise.  相似文献

The present study examined the relationship between perceptual style and perception of physical effort. Perceptual style of 10 men and 10 women was assessed by the rod-and-frame apparatus. Perception of physical effort was defined as the difference in heart-rate responses between a standard work task and the subject's self-selected task. Heart-rate response on the pre-selected standard work task on a cycle ergometer (600 kpm.min.-1) was extremely variable, ranging from 111 to 188 beats per minute (M = 153 +/- 23.5). However, average error between heart rate during the standard work task and the subjects' self-adjusted workload was extremely low (range 0 to 18 beats per minute; M = 5.4 +/- 5.5 beats per minute). Pearson correlation of .78 showed a moderate relationship between heart rate and rating of perceived effort, but was nonsignificant (-.12) between perceptual style and perception of physical effort. The data confirm the absence of a significant relationship between perceptual style (i.e., field dependence-independence) and ability to reproduce a standard work task. In addition, these results suggest that there has been possible bias in studies of relationships between heart rate and rating of perceived effort or workload and rating of perceived effort during incremental testing.  相似文献

Subjects viewed slides of the Rorschach cards while listening to heart sounds that were supposedly but not actually their own. For some of the subjects the heart rate increased when they were exposed to the five achromatic cards and for some subjects the heart rate increased when they were exposed to the five chromatic cards. In addition, some subjects were told that increased heart rate was a sign of mental health (positive condition), and some that the increased heart rate was a sign of mental abnormality (negative condition) Since the heart-rate increase (behavior) and Rorschach cards associated with the increase (attitude object) are connected by a positive causal relation, triadic theory predicts that the sign of the heart-rate increase should generalize to the associated cards (i e, be positive in the positive condition and negative in the negative condition) An analysis of variance revealed such an overall significant effect Closer examination of the data, however, revealed that the triadic effects were not unambiguously occurring when the increased heart rate was associated with achromatic cards It was suggested that in this condition the unique characteristics of the cards facilitated the generation of complicating anxiety. The purpose of the present study was to identify the physiological characteristics corresponding to three affects (fear, anger, and joy), which were elicited through real situations in a laboratory. The subjects were asked to rate their psychological responses using the Affect Rating Scales for each affective situation. Physiological indices (diastolic and systolic blood pressures, heart rate, respiration rate and frequency of galvanic skin response) were measured. The subjects' affects can be characterized by two functions obtained through discriminant analysis. One discriminant function separated positive from negative affects; the other set apart anger from the remaining affects.  相似文献
