This essay combine's clinical vignettes and an edited set of postings on an Internet discussion of the events of September 11 and their aftermath. I raise questions about how a psychoanalytic inquiry coordinates with other ways of understanding terrorism and trauma and about our complex relationships as clinicians, citizens, witnesses, and actors. I consider the movement from shock to reaction to analysis. I try to weave critical analysis and affective processing; I was interested in the difficulty of clinical work in conditions of ongoing uncertainty and shared anxiety. ABSTRACT— In this article, we provide an overview of what various philosophers throughout the ages have claimed about the nature of happiness, and we discuss to what extent psychological science has been able to substantiate or refute their claims. We first address concerns raised by philosophers regarding the possibility, desirability, and justifiability of happiness and then turn to the perennial question of how to be happy. Integrating insights from great thinkers of the past with empirical findings from modern behavioral sciences, we review the conditions and causes of happiness. Because of the benefits of group-counseling experiences, the lack of psychological services for older adults, and the unique concerns of aged women, a group-counseling program for aged women was conducted. An instrument designed to measure components of two distinct alcoholism aftercare treatments was developed and evaluated for reliability and validity. Trained judges reliably rated audiotaped samples of coping skills and interactional group therapy sessions. Coping skills groups engaged in significantly more education and skill training, problem solving, and role playing. Interactional groups showed more interpersonal learning, expression/exploration of feelings, and here-and-now focus. Groups that employed more education and skill training, less expression and exploration of feelings, and less her e-and-now focus were associated with fewer members reporting subsequent drinking-related problems. None of the ratings of group activities was related to abstinence. 相似文献
