Our recent research with compound stimuli (Han, Humphreys, & Chen, 1999a) suggests that grouping between local elements facilitates the perception of global structure, whereas encoding closure in local elements enhances their segmentation. The present study presents further evidence supporting this assertion. Experiment 1 first developed a new paradigm in which grouping between local elements was manipulated. Subjects responded to the orientations of perceptual groups consisting of local arrows or triangles embedded in background crosses. Responses to the orientations of the groups were slowed as a function of the increased contrast of the crosses, indicating that the strength of grouping between local arrows or triangles was gradually weakened by increasing the contrast of the crosses. Using a similar paradigm, Experiments 2 and 3 investigated the role of Gestalt factors in hierarchical analysis. Global arrows or triangles made up of local arrows, or triangles were embedded in background crosses. Subjects responded to global or local stimuli in terms of orientation or closure. Increasing the contrast of the background crosses produced stronger effects on global responses than on local responses and resulted in elimination of the global precedence effect and emerging of a local precedence effect, which was stronger for closure discrimination than for orientation discrimination. These results provide new evidence supporting our previous claim about the role of Gestalt factors in hierarchical analysis.  相似文献

Using simple geometrical figures, the effect of adaptation upon sensitivity to figures of the same or different form was investigated. The adapting stimuli (blank white field, contour triangles, or circles) were presented for 1, 5, 30, or 60 sec. The test stimuli were always triangles, presented for a short exposure time at .1, .2, .4, .8, and 1.2 sec after the offset of the adapting pattern. The threshold duration of the test stimuli was measured. It was found that both adapting patterns raised the threshold above that measured for adaptation with the blank white field. But it wss only for the pair “adapting triangles-test triangles” that an increase of the time of adaptation beyond 5 sec resulted in an increase of this effect. This suggests that selective lowering in sensitivity during prolonged viewing of some figures may develop. The effect disappeared after about 1.2 sec following an exponential curve.  相似文献

Previous studies on the role of attention in perceptual grouping have yielded contradicting findings, some suggesting that grouping requires attention and others indicating that it does not. Kimchi and Razpurker-Apfeld (Psychonomic Bulletin and Review, 11(4), 687–696, 2004) showed that attentional demands in grouping could vary according to the processes involved. The current study expanded on this, examining whether attentional demands vary for (a) different grouping principles and (b) as a function of contingent processing of element segregation and shape formation. We used the inattention paradigm with an online measure, in which participants engaged in an attentionally demanding change-detection task on a small matrix presented on a task-irrelevant backdrop of grouped elements. The backdrop grouping changed or stayed the same independently of any change in the target. Congruency effects produced by changes in backdrop grouping on target-change judgments indicate that the backdrop grouping was accomplished under inattention. The results showed congruency effects when grouping formed columns/rows by proximity but not by shape similarity, and when grouping into a distinct shape by collinearity did not involve element segregation. No congruency effects were found when grouping into a shape by collinearity or connectedness involved element segregation, except when connectedness was combined with color similarity. These results suggest that attentional demands depend on the combination of grouping principles and the complexity of the processes involved in the organization. These findings provide further support for the view that perceptual organization is a multiplicity of processes that vary in attentional demands.  相似文献

Behavioral syntactic priming effects during sentence comprehension are typically observed only if both the syntactic structure and lexical head are repeated. In contrast, during production syntactic priming occurs with structure repetition alone, but the effect is boosted by repetition of the lexical head. We used fMRI to investigate the neuronal correlates of syntactic priming and lexical boost effects during sentence production and comprehension. The critical measure was the magnitude of fMRI adaptation to repetition of sentences in active or passive voice, with or without verb repetition. In conditions with repeated verbs, we observed adaptation to structure repetition in the left IFG and MTG, for active and passive voice. However, in the absence of repeated verbs, adaptation occurred only for passive sentences. None of the fMRI adaptation effects yielded differential effects for production versus comprehension, suggesting that sentence comprehension and production are subserved by the same neuronal infrastructure for syntactic processing.  相似文献

When dissimilar monocular images are presented separately to each of a person’s eyes, these images compete for visual dominance, with dominance of one image or the other alternating over time. While this phenomenon, called binocular rivalry, transpires, local image features distributed over space and between the eyes can become visually dominant at the same time; the resulting global figure implicates interocular grouping. Previous studies have suggested that color tends to influence the incidence of global dominance; in this study, we assess whether illusory color can also influence interocular grouping. To test this, we exploited the McCollough effect, an orientation-contingent color aftereffect induced by prolonged adaptation to different colors paired with different orientations. Results show that during binocular rivalry, illusory colors induced by the McCollough adaptation enhance strong interocular grouping relative to preadaptation testing, to an extent comparable in strength with the enhancement induced by real colors. Thus, illusory colors that are present only in an observer’s mind are sufficiently potent to influence low-level visual processes such as binocular rivalry.  相似文献

The competition between perceptual grouping factors is a relatively ignored topic, especially in the case of extrinsic grouping cues (e.g., common region or connectedness). Recent studies have examined the integration of extrinsic cues using tasks that induce selective attention to groups based on different grouping cues. However, this procedure could generate alternative strategies for task performance, which are non-related to the perceptual grouping operations. In the current work, we used an indirect task, i.e. repetition discrimination task, without explicit attention to grouping cues to further examine the rules that govern dominance between competing extrinsic grouping factors. This procedure allowed us to obtain an unbiased measure of the competition between common region and connectedness cues acting within the same display. The results corroborate previous data showing that grouping by common region dominated the perceived organization of the display, even though the phenomenological strength of the grouping cues was equated for each participant by means of a preliminary scaling task. Our results highlight the relevance of using indirect tasks as an essential tool for the systematic study of the integration of extrinsic grouping cues.

Experiments on selective adaptation have shown that the locus of the phonetic category boundary between two segments shifts after repetitive listening to an adapting stimulus. Theoretical interpretations of these results have proposed that adaptation occurs either entirely at an auditory level of processing or at both auditory and more abstract phonetic levels. The present experiment employed two alternating stimuli as adaptors in an attempt to distinguish between these two possible explanations. Two alternating stimuli were used as adaptors in order to test for the presence of contingent effects and to compare these results to simple adaptation using only a single adaptor. Two synthetic CV series with different vowels that varied the place of articulation of the consonant were employed. When two alternating adaptors were used, contingent adaptation effects were observed for the two stimulus series. The direction of the shifts in each series was governed by the vowel context of the adapting syllables. Using the single adaptor data, a comparison was made between the additive effects of the single adaptors and their combined effects when presented in alternating pairs. With voiced adaptors, only within-series adaptation effects were found, and these data were consistent with a on,level model of selective adaptation. However, for the voiceless adaptors, both within- and cross-series adaptation effects were found, suggesting the possible presence of two levels of adaptation to place of articulation. Further, the contingent adaptation effects with the voiceless adaptors seemed to be the result of the additive effects of the two alternating adaptors. This result indicates that previously reported contingent adaptation results may also reflect the net vowel specific adaptation effects after cancellation of other, nonvowel dependent effects and that caution is needed in interpreting such results.  相似文献

Selective adaptation effects were measured with contrast-modulated patterns and sine-wave gratings in order to determine the extent to which the two patterns are processed by common mechanisms. Direction-specific adaptation effects were measured for a contrast-modulated adapting pattern and a test pattern. The contrast-modulated adapting pattern was composed of a sine-wave grating of 8 cycles deg-1 whose contrast was spatially modulated by a sinusoid of 1 cycle deg-1 at one of four levels: 100%, 60%, 30%, or 0%. The results showed that contrast-modulation thresholds for contrast-modulated gratings were raised by 0.3 to 0.5 log units following adaptation to a contrast-modulated grating moving in the same direction as the test pattern, relative to thresholds obtained following adaptation to a contrast-modulated grafting moving in the opposite direction. Cross-adaptation effects were also measured with a sine-wave adapting pattern and a contrast-modulated test pattern. The sine-wave adapting pattern was a sine-wave grating of 1 cycle deg-1 whose contrast was set to one of three levels: 16.4%, 1.25%, or 0%. The contrast-modulated test pattern was a sine-wave grating of 8 cycles deg-1 whose contrast was modulated by a sinusoid of 1 cycle deg-1. The results revealed that contrast-modulation thresholds for contrast-modulated gratings were raised by approximately 0.25 log units following adaptation to moving sine-wave gratings, relative to thresholds obtained following adaptation to a uniform field. Cross-adaptation effects were also obtained with a contrast-modulated adapting pattern and a sine-wave test pattern. The results support the view that signals generated from luminance-domain stimuli and from contrast-domain stimuli are processed by a common motion mechanism.  相似文献

The recall of hierarchically organized tonal sequences was investigated in two experiments. An adaptation of the technique of melodic dictation was employed, in which musically trained listeners notated each sequence after it was presented. Strong effects of sequence structure were obtained. Sequences whose tonal structure could be parsimoniously encoded in hierarchical fashion were recalled with a high level of accuracy. Sequences that could not be parsimoniously encoded produced substantially more errors in recall. Temporal segmentation was found to have a substantial effect on performance, which reflected grouping by temporal proximity regardless of tonal structure. The results provide evidence for the hypothesis that we encode tonal materials by inferring sequence structures and alphabets at different hierarchical levels, together with their rules of combination.  相似文献

Do vowel-contingent selective adaptation effects for place of articulation depend on vowel identity, or on the particular formant frequencies used? An experiment is reported here which tested the adaptation effects of consonants with exactly the same formant transitions before different diphthongs. In this experiment, the phonetic identity of the vowel and the formant frequencies of the consonant are not confounded as they have been in previous studies. In the contingent adaptation condition, no phoneme boundary shifts were observed, and this is interpreted along with previous evidencefor such phoneme boundary shifts when phonetic identity of the vowel and formant frequencies are confounded as indicating that adaptation operates on the spectral representation of the stimulus. Other evidence consistent with this conclusion is that adaptation with alternating adaptors from each end of the test series produced negligible shifts, and that a single adaptor from a diphthong series different from that of the test series produced phoneme boundary shifts as large as those with a single adaptor from the same test series.  相似文献

Adaptation to manipulated versions of face images can induce strong adaptation effects in face perception and the adjustment of memory representations has been suggested to underlie this effect. In previous studies such effects have been observed after short as well as long delays between adaptation and test (5 min and 24 h) and they were evident in face images identical to the adapting stimuli as well as in new images of the same individual and in faces that were not shown during adaptation (factor transferability). By using regression analysis, here we show that adaptation duration modulates the size of the adaptation effect, which was evident after both short and long time delays and across all levels of transferability tested.  相似文献

The authors investigated whether the gestalt grouping principles can be quantified and whether the conjoint effects of two grouping principles operating at the same time on the same stimuli differ from the sum of their individual effects. After reviewing earlier attempts to discover how grouping principles interact, they developed a probabilistic model of grouping by proximity, which allows measurement of strength on a ratio scale. Then, in 3 experiments using dot lattices, they showed that the strength of the conjoint effect of 2 grouping principles--grouping by proximity and grouping by similarity--is equal to the sum of their separate effects. They propose a physiologically plausible model of this law.  相似文献

A central bias in spatial selection has been proposed to explain the decreasing search efficiency with increasing target eccentricity that results when distractors can occur closer to fixation than the target (J. M. Wolfe, P. O'Neill, & S. C. Bennett, 1998). The authors found evidence for such a bias using an odd-man-out variant of conjunction search. However, the bias was absent for the same displays when the identity of the odd-man-out target was known in advance. The authors propose that (a) top-down knowledge of a target feature supports grouping on this feature and (b) grouping links a peripheral target to central distractors expressing the same feature, increasing the attentional weighting afforded to the target and, consequently, facilitating its detection. The effects are independent of bottom-up priming effects occurring across trials. Thus, feature-based grouping can be driven top-down and can overrule the central bias in spatial selection.  相似文献

When one harmonic of a vowel starts before and stops after the others, its contribution to the vowel's phonetic quality is reduced. Two experiments demonstrate that this reduction cannot be attributed entirely to adaptation. The first experiment shows that a harmonic that starts at the same time as a short vowel but continues after the vowel has ended contributes almost as little to the vowel's phonetic quality as a harmonic that starts before but stops at the same time as the vowel. The second experiment shows that the small contribution to vowel quality of a harmonic that starts before a vowel can be increased by adding an additional tone that will in turn form a perceptual group with that part of the harmonic preceding the vowel. The experiments demonstrate that some perceptual grouping operations are performed before the first formant of a vowel is estimated from the amplitudes of its component harmonics.  相似文献

An implicit assumption of studies in the attentional literature has been that global and local levels of attention are involved in object recognition. To investigate this assumption, a divided attention task was used in which hierarchical figures were presented to prime the subsequent discrimination of target objects at different levels of category identity (basic and subordinate). Target objects were identified among distractor objects that varied in their degree of visual similarity to the targets. Hierarchical figures were also presented at different sizes and as individual global and local elements in order to investigate whether attention-priming effects on object discrimination were due to grouping/parsing operations or spatial extent. The results showed that local processing primed subordinate object discriminations when the objects were visually similar. Global processing primed basic object discriminations, regardless of the similarity of the distractors, and subordinate object discriminations when the objects were visually dissimilar. It was proposed that global and local processing aids the selection of perceptual attributes of objects that are diagnostic for recognition and that selection is based on two mechanisms: spatial extent and grouping/parsing operations.  相似文献

Perceptual grouping is usually defined by principles that associate distinct elements by virtue of image properties, such as proximity, similarity, and occurrence within common regions. What role does learning play in forming a perceptual group? This study provides evidence that learning of shape associations leads to perceptual grouping. Subjects were repeatedly exposed to pairs of unique shapes that co-occurred within a common region. The common region cue was later removed in displays composed of these shapes, and the subjects searched the display for two adjacent shapes of the same color. The subjects were faster at locating the color repetition when the adjacent shapes with the same color came from the same trained groups than when they were composed of two shapes from different trained groups. The effects were perceptual in nature: Learned pairings produced spatial distortions similar to those observed for groups defined by perceptual similarity. A residual grouping effect was observed even when the shapes in the trained group switched their relative positions but was eliminated when each shape was inverted. These results indicate that statistical co-occurrence with explicit grouping cues may form an important component of perceptual organization, determining perceived scene structure solely on the basis of past experience.  相似文献

The distribution of figural "goodness" in 2 mental shape spaces, the space of triangles and the space of quadrilaterals, was examined. In Experiment 1, participants were asked to rate the typicality of visually presented triangles and quadrilaterals (perceptual task). In Experiment 2, participants were asked to draw triangles and quadrilaterals by hand (production task). The rated typicality of a particular shape and the probability that that shape was generated by participants were each plotted as a function of shape parameters, yielding estimates of the subjective distribution of shape goodness in shape space. Compared with neutral distributions of random shapes in the same shape spaces, these distributions showed a marked bias toward regular forms (equilateral triangles and squares). Such psychologically modal shapes apparently represent ideal forms that maximize the perceptual preference for regularity and symmetry.  相似文献

We tested whether processes that evoke agency interpretations and mental state attributions also lead to adoption of the actor’s visuospatial perspective by the observer. Agency and mental state interpretations were manipulated by showing different film clips involving two triangles (the Frith-Happé animations). Participants made speeded spatial decisions while watching these films. The responses in the spatial task could be either the same or different when given from the perspective of the participant versus the perspective of one of the triangles. Reaction times were longer when the perspectives of the participants and triangles differed than when they were the same. This effect increased as the need to invoke agency interpretations in order to understand the films increased, and it increased for those films that had previously been shown to evoke mental state attributions. This demonstrates that processing of an agent’s behavior co-occurs with perspective adoption, even in the case in which triangles are the actors.  相似文献

Eye movements have been recently recorded in participants watching animated triangles in short movies that normally evoke mentalizing (Frith–Happé animations). Authors have found systematic differences in oculomotor behaviour according to the degree of mental state attribution to these triangles: Participants made longer fixations and looked longer at intentional triangles than at triangles moving randomly. However, no study has yet explored kinematic characteristics of Frith–Happé animations and their influence on eye movements. In a first experiment, we have run a quantitative kinematic analysis of Frith–Happé animations and found that the time triangles spent moving and the distance between them decreased with the mentalistic complexity of their movements. In a second experiment, we have recorded eye movements in 17 participants watching Frith–Happé animations and found that some differences in fixation durations and in the proportion of gaze allocated to triangles between the different kinds of animations were entirely explained by low-level kinematic confounds. We finally present a new eye-tracking measure of visual attention, triangle pursuit duration, which does differentiate the different types of animations even after taking into account kinematic cofounds. However, some idiosyncratic kinematic properties of the Frith–Happé animations prevent an entirely satisfactory interpretation of these results. The different eye-tracking measures are interpreted as implicit and line measures of the processing of animate movements.  相似文献
