To capture the cognitive organization of a set of questions or problems pertaining to a body of information, Doignon and Falmagne have proposed, and analyzed in a number of papers, the concept of aknowledge space, that is, a distinguished collection of subsets of questions, representing the possibleknowledge states. This collection of sets is assumed to satisfy a number of conditions. Since this concept is a deterministic one, the problem of empirical testing arises. A stochastic version of a knowledge space is developed in this paper, in which the knowledge states are considered as possible epochs in a subject's learning history. The knowledge space is decomposed as a union of a number of possible learning paths, calledgradations. The model specifies how a subject is channelled through and progresses along a gradation. A probabilistic axiom of the local indepencence type relates the knowledge states to the observable responses. The predictions of this model are worked out in details in the case of parametric assumptions involving gamma distributions. An application of the model to artificial data is described, based on maximum likelihood methods. The statistical analysis is shown to be capable of revealing the combinatoric core of the model. This work was supported by NSF grant IST-8418860 and ARI grant DAAG29-84-G-0083 to New York University. I am grateful to Jean-Paul Doignon, Mathieu Koppen, Geoff Iverson and Michael Landy for their reactions to previous drafts of this paper, to Michael Villano for carrying out the computer simulation and the analysis of the simulated data, and especially to one referee for his very useful comments.  相似文献

The very early appearance of abstract knowledge is often taken as evidence for innateness. We explore the relative learning speeds of abstract and specific knowledge within a Bayesian framework and the role for innate structure. We focus on knowledge about causality, seen as a domain-general intuitive theory, and ask whether this knowledge can be learned from co-occurrence of events. We begin by phrasing the causal Bayes nets theory of causality and a range of alternatives in a logical language for relational theories. This allows us to explore simultaneous inductive learning of an abstract theory of causality and a causal model for each of several causal systems. We find that the correct theory of causality can be learned relatively quickly, often becoming available before specific causal theories have been learned--an effect we term the blessing of abstraction. We then explore the effect of providing a variety of auxiliary evidence and find that a collection of simple perceptual input analyzers can help to bootstrap abstract knowledge. Together, these results suggest that the most efficient route to causal knowledge may be to build in not an abstract notion of causality but a powerful inductive learning mechanism and a variety of perceptual supports. While these results are purely computational, they have implications for cognitive development, which we explore in the conclusion.  相似文献

Prototype theory construes membership in a concept's extension as graded, determined by similarity to the concept's “best” exemplar (or by some other measure of central tendency). The present paper is concerned with the compatibility of this view of concept membership with two criteria of adequacy for theories of concepts. The first criterion concerns the relationship between complex concepts and their conceptual constituents. The second concerns the truth conditions for thoughts corresponding to simple inclusions.  相似文献

In the target article, we presented the hypothesis that parasite-stress variation was a causal factor in the variation of in-group assortative sociality, cross-nationally and across the United States, which we indexed with variables that measured different aspects of the strength of family ties and religiosity. We presented evidence supportive of our hypothesis in the form of analyses that controlled for variation in freedom, wealth resources, and wealth inequality across nations and the states of the USA. Here, we respond to criticisms from commentators and attempt to clarify and expand the parasite-stress theory of sociality used to fuel our research presented in the target article.  相似文献

Taking Per Martin-Löf’s constructive type theory as a starting-point a theory of assertion is developed, which is able to account for the epistemic aspects of the speech act of assertion, and in which it is shown that assertion is not a wide genus. From a constructivist point of view, one is entitled to assert, for example, that a proposition A is true, only if one has constructed a proof object a for A in an act of demonstration. One thereby has grounded the assertion by an act of demonstration, and a grounding account of assertion therefore suits constructive type theory. Because the act of demonstration in which such a proof object is constructed results in knowledge that A is true, the constructivist account of assertion has to ward off some of the criticism directed against knowledge accounts of assertion. It is especially the internal relation between a judgement being grounded and its being known that makes it possible to do so. The grounding account of assertion can be considered as a justification account of assertion, but it also differs from justification accounts recently proposed, namely in the treatment of selfless assertions, that is, assertions which are grounded, but are not accompanied by belief.  相似文献
