Several studies have highlighted the adaptive role of self-compassion on human suffering and on a wide range of psychopathological conditions. Extensive research has shown that emotional intelligence has been associated with well-being, mental and physical health and quality of interpersonal relationships. We set out to explore the mediating role of self-compassion and emotional intelligence on the relationship between shame traumatic memories and depressive symptoms, and to explore if these were different between female and male adolescents. The sample was composed of 1101 adolescents from general population, whose age ranged from 14 to 18 years. Participants filled out a battery of self-report questionnaires designed to measure shame traumatic memories, self-compassion, emotional intelligence and depressive symptoms. Correlational analysis showed that in male and female adolescents, shame traumatic memories are associated with more depressive symptoms and with lower levels of self-compassion and emotional intelligence. Multigroup analysis showed that emotional intelligence has a greater impact on depression in female adolescents. Also, the impact of shame traumatic memories on depression is stronger in males, even though females report shame traumatic memories as more impactful. This study provides preliminary evidence that self-compassion and emotional intelligence are important emotion regulation processes for depressive symptoms in adolescence.

Disability evaluation in mental retardation, which is done through assessment of intelligence, has certain inherent problems.
The situation gets more complex if the person has additional disabilities, which is very likely in mental retardation. As
an initiative, this study aims to study problems faced in intelligence testing in persons with mental retardation. The study
included 88 randomly selected files of the individuals with mental retardation registered at the National Institute for the
Mentally Handicapped (NIMH) Regional Centre, Kolkata during 2007-08. Each file was reviewed for information on diagnosis mental
retardation, associated conditions and the intelligence testing reports. The results indicated that specific factors including
both the characteristics of mental retardation and the nature of the tests available were interfering with intelligence testing.
The problems are discussed in the context of current constructs related to mental retardation, diagnostic systems and legislation.

Relation of perceived emotional intelligence and health-related quality of life of middle-aged women
This study examined the relationship between perceived emotional intelligence and health-related quality of life in middle-aged women. 99 middle-aged Spanish women, who studied in two adult schools, volunteered to participate. 49 were premenopausal and 45 were postmenopausal. These women completed the Trait Meta-Mood Scale and Health Survey SF-36. Scores were analyzed according to social, physical, and mental health, menopausal status, and scores on perceived emotional intelligence. Then, the data regarding the mental and physical health of the premenopausal and postmenopausal women were compared after controlling for age. No associations between menopausal status and health-related quality of life were found. Perceived skill at mood repair was significantly associated with scores on health-related quality of life in these middle-aged women. These findings provide empirical evidence that aspects of perceived emotional intelligence may account for the health-related quality of life in midlife including social, physical, and psychological symptoms.

The study addressed two findings in the creativity literature that show, on the one hand, that bipolar disorder and other clinical dysfunctions are overrepresented among eminently creative people, and that positive affect is positively associated with creativity. The central hypothesis of the study was that emotional intelligence could be an intervening variable between clinical conditions and creative production. A sample of 412 undergraduates completed a wide range of divergent thinking and creative production measures, and the Emotional Intelligence Scale; 11 percent of the sample reported that they had completed treatment for mood disorder and 5 percent report that they were currently in treatment. A combination of regression and ANOVA analyses revealed: The link between mood disorders and creative production persisted after emotional intelligence was statistically removed; the same was true for ideational fluency and flexibility of cognitive style. The link between emotional intelligence and creative production persisted after the effect of clinical disorders was removed. Ideational fluency and emotional intelligence were higher among people who completed treatment compared to people in treatment. The tentative interpretation is that emotional intelligence serves as a counterweight against mood disorders in enhancing creative production.

This study examined the relations among the big five personality traits, emotional intelligence, and happiness. Participants
included 205 (51 females, 154 males) university students in India. A series of mediational path analyses tested whether emotional
intelligence mediated the relationship between personality traits and feelings of happiness. The analyses revealed that emotional
intelligence mediates associations between several personality factors and happiness for females but not for males. Specifically,
for females, emotional intelligence mediated the associations from conscientiousness and emotional instability to happiness,
while males evidenced only direct associations. The findings suggest different associations than those of past studies regarding
personality and happiness in Western samples. According to these results from an Indian sample, emotional intelligence may
serve as an intermediary from personality to happiness for females, but has independent contributions to happiness for males.

A study to evaluate the relationship between the spiritual intelligence and adjustment among the college students was conducted on a sample of 250 students in six various colleges of Tuticorin district, Tamil Nadu, India. Gender, religion, community, major subject, educational qualification of father and mother, student locality, college type, father and mother’s occupation and monthly family income (n = 11 variables) were chosen for the study. Test of significance for spiritual intelligence and adjustment was studied and found them nonsignificant except student locality, found to be significant. Two valid and reliable instruments were used to assess student’s spiritual intelligence and adjustment. Correlation and Chi-square analysis using structural equation model were used to analyze these data. Correlation analysis showed significant relationship between the variables among the college students (n = 250). Chi-square analysis of association between adjustments of college students showed that most variables are nonsignificant unlike father’s educational qualification and mother’s occupation. The results disclosed the significant positive relationship with spiritual intelligence and adjustment among adolescents.

AbstractAlthough emotional intelligence is an increasingly popular research topic regarding academic success, only one study regarding the topic has been conducted among Christian higher education student bodies. The Bible does not mention the term emotional intelligence; however, there are many biblical accounts of negative behaviors as a result of people succumbing to their emotions. Skills training, in the context of Christian colleges, would teach students how to commit emotional health to the will of God, how to process emotions and would provide life skills that will assist with the decision-making process.

It is widely accepted that older people need to perceive and understand their feelings and believe in their ability to adapt to negative situations or losses that occur in aging. In this study, we examined the relationships among emotional intelligence, coping, and depressed mood, measuring these relationships through a structural equation model (SEM). A total of 215 subjects over 60 years old with no cognitive impairment participated in the study. The results show that emotional intelligence positively predicts problem-focused coping, which in turn negatively predicts depressed mood. However, there is no significant relationship between emotional intelligence and emotion-focused coping, which positively predicts depressed mood. These results indicate that emotionally intelligent people make greater use of problem-focused strategies, and they benefit from them in achieving a positive mood and, therefore, better psychological adjustment, whereas emotional strategies foster depressed mood. It should be noted that emotional intelligence can be seen as an indicator of psychological adjustment and as a precursor of feelings associated with good mental health. Therefore, the implementation of activities that promote emotional intelligence can improve the quality of life of older people.

The current study evaluated the relationships among spiritual beliefs, religious practices, physical health, and mental health
for individuals with stroke. A cross-sectional analysis of 63 individuals evaluated in outpatient settings, including 32 individuals
with stroke and 31 healthy controls was conducted through administration of the Brief Multidimensional Measure of Religiousness/Spirituality
(BMMRS) and the Medical Outcomes Scale-Short Form 36 (SF-36). For individuals with stroke, the SF-36 General Mental Health scale was significantly correlated with only the BMMRS Religious and Spiritual Coping scale (r = .43; p < .05). No other BMMRS factors were significantly correlated with SF-36 mental or physical health scales. Non-significant
trends indicated spiritual factors were primarily related to mental versus physical health. This study suggests spiritual
belief that a higher power will assist in coping with illness/disability is associated with better mental health following
stroke, but neither religious nor spiritual factors are associated with physical health outcomes. The results are consistent
with research that suggests that spiritual beliefs may protect individuals with stroke from experiencing emotional distress.

This paper explores the representation of emotional health and healing in traditional Chinese literature, and the holistic relationship between traditional Chinese mental medicine and literature as well as philosophy. The philosophical, moral and aesthetic significance assigned to emotional health and healing not only inspired but also mandated the representation of these subjects in Chinese literature. For many Chinese readers, emotional health is more than a medical concern but is integral to their moral and spiritual wholesomeness, the attainment of which necessarily involves the edifying role of literature. The literary representation of emotional health and healing gave rise to a subculture of emotional health and a medical dilettantism in Chinese society. The mutual inclusivity of the professional and the amateurish is peculiar to traditional Chinese mental medicine. While facilitating popular appreciation of emotional health and helping to validate the legitimacy and efficacy of emotional healing, such a phenomenon also caused a certain degree of charlatanization that undercut the rationality and validity of mental medicine. An investigation into the relationship between traditional Chinese literature and mental medicine provides an interdisciplinary perspective from which to examine the latter's history, theory, and practice, thus shedding a cross-cultural light on modern psychology and psychiatry.
