I reject the traditional picture of philosophical withdrawal in the Hellenistic Age by showing how both Epicureans and Stoics
oppose, in different ways, the Platonic and Aristotelian assumption that contemplative activity is the greatest good for a
human being. Chrysippus the Stoic agrees with Plato and Aristotle that the greatest good for a human being is virtuous activity,
but he denies that contemplation exercises virtue. Epicurus more thoroughly rejects the assumption that the greatest good
for a human being is virtuous activity. He maintains that the greatest good for a human being is the tranquility that virtuous
activity always and contemplative activity sometimes brings about.

The following three propositions appear to be individually defensible but jointly inconsistent: (1) reliability is a necessary
condition on epistemic justification; (2) on contested matters in philosophy, my beliefs are not reliably formed; (3) some
of these beliefs are epistemically justified. I explore the nature and scope of the problem, examine and reject some candidate
solutions, compare the issue with ones arising in discussions about disagreement, and offer a brief assessment of our predicament.

Elliott Sober argues that the statistical slogan “Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence” cannot be taken literally:
it must be interpreted charitably as claiming that the absence of evidence is (typically) not very much evidence of absence.
I offer an alternative interpretation, on which the slogan claims that absence of evidence is (typically) not objective evidence of absence. I sketch a definition of objective evidence, founded in the notion of an epistemically objective likelihood,
and I show that in Sober’s paradigm case, the slogan can, on this understanding, be sustained.

In Judgment and Agency, Ernest Sosa takes “reliabilist” virtue epistemology deep into “responsibilist” territory, arguing that “a true epistemology” will assign “responsibilist-cum-reliabilist intellectual virtue the main role in addressing concerns at the center of the tradition.” However, Sosa stops short of granting this status to familiar responsibilist virtues like open-mindedness, intellectual courage, and intellectual humility. He cites three reasons for doing so: responsibilist virtues involve excessive motivational demands; they are quasi-ethical; and they are best understood, not as constituting knowledge, but rather as putting one “in a position” to know. I elaborate on and respond to each of these concerns. I argue that none of them provides Sosa with a good reason for excluding responsibilist virtues from occupying a central role in his reliabilist virtue epistemology. I conclude that Sosa owes virtue responsibilism an even wider embrace. 相似文献

This paper is a discussion of the emotion of compassion or pity, and the corresponding virtue. It begins by placing the emotion
of compassion in the moral conceptual landscape, and then moves to reject the currently dominant view, a version of Aristotelianism
developed by Martha Nussbaum, in favour of a non-cognitive conception of compassion as a feeling. An alternative neo-Aristotelian
account is then outlined. The relation of the virtue of compassion to other virtues is plotted, and some doubts sown about
its practical significance.

Perhaps the most significant contemporary theory of lawhood is the Best System (/MRL) view on which laws are true generalizations
that best systematize knowledge. Our question in this paper will be how best to formulate a theory of this kind. We’ll argue
that an acceptable MRL should (i) avoid inter-system comparisons of simplicity, strength, and balance, (ii) make lawhood epistemically
accessible, and (iii) allow for laws in the special sciences. Attention to these problems will bring into focus a useful menu
of novel MRL theories, some of which solve problems the original MRL theory could not. Hence we conceive of the paper as moving
toward a better Best System theory of laws.

Relatively little is known about the factor structure of disruptive behavior among preadolescent girls. The present study
reports on exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses of disruptive girl behavior over four successive data waves as rated
by parents and teachers in a large, representative community sample of girls (N = 2,451). Five factors were identified from parent ratings (oppositional behavior/conduct problems, inattention, hyperactivity/impulsivity,
relational aggression, and callous-unemotional behaviors), and four factors were identified derived from teacher ratings (oppositional
behavior/conduct problems/callous-unemotional behaviors, inattention, hyperactivityimpulsivity, and relational aggression).
There was a high degree of consistency of items loading on equivalent factors across parent and teacher ratings. Year-to-year
stability of factors between ages five and 12 was high for parent ratings (ICC = 0.70 to 0.88), and slightly lower for teacher
ratings (ICC = 0.56 to 0.83). These findings are discussed in terms of possible adjustment to the criteria for children's
disruptive behavior disorders found in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders.

Dual process theorists in psychology maintain that the mind’s workings can be explained in terms of conscious or controlled processes and automatic processes. Automatic processes are largely nonconscious, that is, triggered by environmental stimuli without the agent’s conscious awareness or deliberation. Automaticity researchers contend that even higher level habitual social behaviors can be nonconsciously primed. This article brings work on automaticity to bear on our understanding of habitual virtuous actions. After examining a recent intuitive account of habitual actions and habitual virtuous actions, the author offers her own explanation in terms of goal-dependent automaticity. This form of automaticity provides an account of habitual virtuous actions that explains the sense in which these actions are rational, that is, done for reasons. Habitual virtuous actions are rational in the sense of being purposive or goal-directed and are essentially linked with the agent’s psychological states. Unlike deliberative virtuous actions, the agent’s reasons for habitual virtuous actions are not present to her conscious awareness at the time of acting.

After reviewing the notion of caring-self from a Korean feminist perspective, this paper argues that caring-self, in spite of its great contribution to pastoral care and education of women, is an essentialist notion based on Western individualism, one that excludes the experiences of men and women of nonwestern/communal cultures. Critically examining psychological literature of women's self-esteem and Korean self-esteem literature, I argue that to provide more appropriate pastoral care and education for Korean women, it is necessary to understand what and how their concept of the person is formed in a Korean communal context.

This paper explores what constitutes reliability in persons, particularly intellectual reliability. It considers global reliability, the overall reliability of persons, encompassing both the theoretical and practical realms; sectorial reliability, that of a person in a subject-matter (or behavioral) domain; and focal reliability, that of a particular element, such as a belief. The paper compares reliability with predictability of the kind most akin
to it and distinguishes reliability as an intellectual virtue from reliability as an intellectual power. The paper also connects
reliability with insight, reasoning, knowledge, and trust. It is argued that insofar as reliability is an intellectual virtue,
it must meet both external standards of correctitude and internal standards of justification.

According to the “no-miracles argument” (NMA), truth is the best explanation of the predictive-instrumental success of scientific
theories. A standard objection against NMA is that it is viciously circular. In Scientific Realism: How Science Tracks Truth Stathis Psillos has claimed that the circularity objection can be met when NMA is supplemented with a reliabilist approach
to justification. I will try to show, however, that scientific realists cannot take much comfort from this policy: if reliabilism
makes no qualifications about the domain where inference to the best explanation is reliable, scientific realists flagrantly
beg the question. A qualified version of reliabilism, on the other side, does not entitle us to infer the realist conclusion.
I conclude, then, that Psillos’s proposal does not make any significant progress for scientific realism.

Cases involving amoralists who no longer care about the institution of morality, together with cases of depression, listlessness,
and exhaustion, have posed trouble in recent years for standard formulations of motivational internalism. In response, though,
internalists have been willing to adopt narrower versions of the thesis which restrict it just to the motivational lives of
those agents who are said to be in some way normal, practically rational, or virtuous. My goal in this paper is to offer a
new set of counterexamples to motivational internalism, examples which are effective both against traditional formulations
of the thesis as well as against many of these more recent restricted proposals.

Incremental validity, the ability of a measure to predict or explain variance over and above other measures, is an important
psychometric characteristic of standardized measures, but has received little attention idiographically. Idiographic assessment
may be an important part of developing a clinical case formulation, guiding treatment by developing an individualized understanding
of the variables that trigger and maintain distress. This study examined whether the idiosyncratic cognitive schema hypothesized
by a clinician in a cognitive case formulation explained distress incrementally over that of situational triggers. Using daily
ratings of situational triggers, idiosyncratic cognitions, and distress, the incremental validity of cognitions in predicting
each of six distress measures was tested in a case example using dynamic time series regression. The incremental variance
explained by cognitions varied across the distress measures, suggesting that, in this case example, targeting thoughts and
beliefs for treatment may be important for only certain types of distress.
