In two experiments, practised adult map users compared three-dimensional landsurface drawings against previously and separately studied contour maps. In the first experiment, adding extra contour levels, or marked drainage patterns, led to increased map study and decreased judgement times, whereas adding both led to no further increase or decrease respectively. In the second experiment, removing minor surface details from the drawings produced no overall variation in judgement times. These findings were taken as suggesting that map users selectively encode features from the map in task-determined fashion.  相似文献

Two experiments dealing with, the learning of a space by map or by navigation approached the questions of equivalency of the cognitive processes involved in spatial information and of response fluctuation. In the first experiment, 11 subjects were asked to situate, six times, 18 lo-cations on a blank map. In the second experiment, the subjects were first given 3 min to learn a map with 12 locations marked, and then asked to reproduce it. The task was repeated six times, using three different maps. This gave us several trials per subject, so that distortion could be distinguished from response fluctuation. In Experiment 1, the range of values was the same for response inaccuracy and response, fluctuation; in Experiment 2, the range was greater for response inaccuracy than for response fluctuation. The results showed that space learning by navigation and space learning by map involve different cognitive processes.  相似文献

Serious problems with the diagnosis of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) render it vulnerable to legal challenge and subject to abuse. Problems in legal causation are outlined and include the issues of prior susceptibility, identification of the stressor, symptom assessment, intervening factors, and criminal responsibility. Trial courts continue to question the admissibility of PTSD expert witness testimony. To ensure the continuing validity of PTSD, its use should be limited, and expert witness testimony increasingly supported by empirically based research data.  相似文献

Neuronal unit activity was recorded from the abducens (6th nerve) nucleus, the "final common path," during classical conditioning of the nictitating membrane (NM) response in the rabbit, with the use of a tone conditioned stimulus, an air puff unconditioned stimulus (UCS), 250-msec interstimulus interval, and 60-sec intertrial interval. Animals were given 2 days of conditioning training (104 trials in eight blocks per day) and 1 day of extinction. Control animals were given comparable periods of stimulus presentations, explicitly unpaired. Activity of small clusters of units--"multiple unit" recording--was compared with the amplitude-time course of the NM response. Between-blocks comparisons of neural and behavioral responses indicated an essentially perfect correlation during acquisition of the conditioned response (Day 1, r = .99; Day 2, r = .98) and a slightly lower correlation during extinction (r = .93) for the conditioning animals. Within-blocks comparisons indicated a close correspondence between the histograms of unit activity and the amplitude-time course of the NM response for the conditioning animals in all phase of training and for the control animals in the UCS trial blocks.  相似文献

Redundancy in the perception of bilateral symmetry in dynamic dot textures was investigated using two-alternative forced-choice techniques. It was found that the symmetry information utilized by the visual system fell within a strip approximately 1 deg wide about the central axis of symmetry, irrespective of the size of the texture at the retina. Outside this strip, the symmetry information was found to be completely redundant.  相似文献

In two experiments, the integration over spatial extent in taste was investigated for threshold sensitivity to NaCl and for suprathreshold intensity perception of saltiness. The area of stimulation was doubled by adding either an ipsilateral or a bilateral stimulus. The two stimuli could be of equal or unequal intensity. The data showed that at threshold level a probability summation model applied to all bilateral and most of the ipsilateral stimulus combinations. Probability summation failed to predict detection probability when two stimuli with different intensities were presented at the same tongue side. For suprathreshold stimuli, the magnitude of the saltiness sensation as estimated by a line-length method depended on the level of stimulation. The possible peripheral interaction mechanisms and central factors contributing to the taste response were discussed.  相似文献

Three experiments are reported that examine the masking effect on the detection of kinesthetic targets from noise presented simultaneously on the same hand or on a different hand as the target. Performance was facilitated when noise on the two hands was correlated versus uncorrelated or when it occurred on just one hand. The data are consistent with correlated input on the two hands being compared and used to reduce noise effects. Moreover, participants ignored uncorrelated noise from nontarget hands when they knew in which hand the targets would occur. There was no effect of shifts from uncorrelated to correlated noise 200 msec prior to targets, suggesting that such bottom-up changes were insufficient to induce comparison across the hands. In contrast, shifts from correlated to uncorrelated noise 200 msec prior to the target had performance at the same level as that with uncorrelated noise throughout the trial. This result indicates that the loss of correlation was detected within this interval and thatwhen the target's location was known, participants were then able to switch attention to the target hand. The interactions between attentional filtering and the correlation on the processing of bilateral kinesthetic inputs are discussed.  相似文献

The use of bilateral presentation in lateralized tachistoscopic reaction time (RT) tasks has been precluded by problems of how to instruct the subject to respond to the left visual field (LVF) or right visual field (RVF) stimulus and by the necessity of fixation control with bilateral presentation. Schmuller and Goodman, 1979 and Schmuller and Goodman, 1980, Brain and Language, 11, 12–18) offered a method, applied to date only in recognition accuracy studies, which can overcome these problems. They used an “arrowhead pointer” at fixation. This instructs the subject as to which stimulus to report first and also controls fixation. We adapted the method to the RT paradigm by having subjects report only the stimulus indicated and applied it in a bilateral presentation version of the Object Naming Latency Task (W. F. McKeever & T. L. Jackson, 1979, Brain and Language, 7, 175–190). Fifty subjects received the unilateral task and 50 received the bilateral task. The bilateral task yielded right visual field superiority in 98% of the subjects and the magnitude of the superiority was over three times as large as in the unilateral task. Different sex × familial sinistrality × VHF interactions obtained on the tasks. Combining the advantages of reaction time and bilateral presentation methods may substantially increase the resolving power of lateralized tachistoscopic tasks.  相似文献

Research in cerebral laterality supports the idea that functional differences between the left and right hemispheres exist with respect to cognitive style and perceptual ability. Related research, which has examined autonomic nervous system (ANS) correlates of cerebral laterality, suggests that a component of the ANS, electrodermal activity (EDA), is also lateralized. Some findings in the literature report the occurrence of bilateral asymmetries in phasic and tonic EDA as a function of a left or right hemisphere preference for information processing. This experiment used normal male subjects who were either left or right movers in a test of Conjugate Lateral Eye Movement (CLEM). This selection procedure served to maximize a subject’s preference for either a right or left hemisphere mode of information processing. Bilateral EDA was recorded continuously while subjects performed a visual recognition task using word (left hemisphere) and shape (right hemisphere) stimuli. The data do not support the contention that performance on a procedure chosen to selectively activate a given hemisphere elicits asymmetric tonic and/or phasic EDA. The results show no significant difference in the frequency of elicited skin conductance responses under either of the experimental conditions. Bilateral tonic EDA rose continuously over time and did not vary in either hand as a function of task. The present results fail to offer support for either of the hypotheses which argue for I) increased contralateralexcitation with selective hemispheric activation, or 2) increased contralateralinhibition of the EDR with hemispheric arousal.  相似文献

The recognition of bilateral symmetry in simple dot patterns is reliably influenced by orientation. Performance is best when the axis of symmetry is vertical. We conducted two experiments to determine whether stimulus orientation also affects detection of the low levels of naturally occurring asymmetry in complex biological images. University students judged whether colour images displayed on a computer monitor possessed perfect bilateral symmetry. Stimuli were generated from high-resolution plan-view images of crabs and insects. In experiment 1, the asymmetric stimuli were the original animals, displayed on a standard black background. Symmetrical versions of each natural image were generated by sectioning the shape at the midline, copying and reflecting one side and then fusing the two halves together. To facilitate comparison of results with those obtained in earlier studies, we also presented dot patterns based upon both the slightly asymmetric and perfectly symmetrical natural images. Experiment 2 was designed to assess whether symmetry detection was dependent upon the markings and patterns on the body and appendages of the animals. The natural images were converted to silhouettes and tested against matched dot patterns. In both studies, images were presented in a random sequence with the axis of symmetry vertical, horizontal, oblique left, and oblique right. Performance with the biological images was consistently better than with the dot patterns. Abolishing fine detail did not appreciably reduce this effect. A pronounced vertical advantage was apparent with all stimuli, demonstrating that this phenomenon is robust despite considerable variation in image complexity. The implications of orientation effects for perception of natural structures are discussed.  相似文献

Pairs of homotopic and heterotopic visual bilateral stimuli and pairs of unilateral visual stimuli were presented to 12 normal right-handed university students requiring a key press if they were of the same form. As predicted from the known histology of the corpus callosum (massive preponderance of homotopic fibers), homotopic presentations yielded significantly faster reaction times than heterotopic stimulations. Bilateral pairs of stimuli were also advantaged in comparison with unilateral trials, replicating Sereno and Kosslyn [Sereno, A. B., & Kosslyn, S. M. (1991). Discrimination within and between hemifields: a new constraint on theories of attention. Neuropsychologia, 29, 659-675]. Moreover, certain attentional processes have never been investigated in the Dimond paradigm and this study provides evidence to the effect that discriminative reaction times to stimulus pairs are strongly influenced by their proximity to the fixation point. In similar previous experiments, the homotopy/heterotopy observation and the bilateral field advantage may have been distorted by that particular confound, as well as several others.  相似文献

In left-right comparisons of perceived length, objects on the left were slightly overestimated by vision alone but not by touch alone. This conflict between vision and touch occurred in the absence of any experimentally induced distortion or illusion. Judgments made with concurrent vision and touch were similar to those made with vision alone regardlesa of whether the Os were judging which objectfelt longer,looked longer, orwas longer. The resolution of a natural conflict between vision and touch is an example of natural visual capture.  相似文献
