Psychol., 1969,10, 176–184.—Can ‘identification of illumination’ be identified as one of the determinants of achromatic vision? Colour constancy is redefined in terms of deviation from albedo/ illumination substitution (A/I-substitution). A series of A/I-substitution experiments, performed under conditions assumed to provide minimal possibilities for identification of illumination, indicate that complete A/I-substitution (zero constancy) is obtained for both brightness and whiteness, provided the test fields are equated with respect to colour temperature and perceived texture.  相似文献

Psychol ., 1969, 10, 167–175.—The literature relevant to the question of multidimensionality of achromatic colour is briefly reviewed. An experiment confirms that the achromatic scale is bidimensional, and indicates that the dimension of brightness is a direct function of the luminance of the local area inspected, while the dimension of whiteness is a direct function of luminance relations of adjacent areas in the visual field.  相似文献

Psychol ., 1969, 10 , 7.69–281.—Identification of illumination as a separate determinant of the dimensions of achromatic colour was investigated with classical methods for manipulating shifts in perceived level of illumination, while controlling the changes in colour contrast brought about by these methods. With the spot-shadow method, constancy effects may be explained by laws of colour contrast, but not by perceived shifts in illumination, whereas neither explanation holds with the cast-shadow method. Results with a method of conceiled cast-shadow may be consistent with both interpretations.  相似文献

Psychol. , 1971, 12, 61–64.– Brightness (the dim-bright dimension) of achromatic colour was investigated as a function of surrounding field luminance. It was found that brightness of a test area was relatively independent of luminance level of the surrounding area until the luminance of the latter had passed well beyond that of the test area. With further increase of surrounding luminance, the brightness of the test area increased rapidly.  相似文献

The Gelb phenomenon, as an example of whiteness contrast, was investigated with three amounts of separation in depth between the test and induction disc. The cue of binocular disparity was used to vary the perceived depth between the discs. It was found that the magnitude of the contrast effect decreased with an increase in the perceived depth between the two discs. This change was regarded as an instance of the adjacency principle. The problem of whether the binocular disparity cue per se or perceived depth was the significant variable was discussed. The consequences of the results were considered with respect to the relation between whiteness constancy and whiteness contrast and the problem of neural localization of the contrast effect.  相似文献

Induced motion was investigated as a function of the stereoscopic separation of the test and inducing object and the instructions to attend to or to ignore the inducing object. It was found that stereoscopically displacing the test object from the inducing object with both kinds of instructions resulted in a decrease in the magnitude of induction particularly with crossed disparity. These results are consistent with the adjacency principle and with the ability of attention as well as adjacency to modify the magnitude of the induced motion.  相似文献

The achromatic interval between the scotopic and the photopic component increased when time in darkness increased, and when pre-stimulation was reduced as regards intensity, duration, or cone/rod ratio. Two sources of behavioral contrast have been identified previously: Pavlovian stimulus-reinforcer relations and component sequence effects (anticipatory contrast). This study sought to isolate these sources of control procedurally in a four-ply multiple schedule composed of two fixed two-component sequences. Different cues were associated with the first component of each sequence, and contrast effects were studied in these target components. In Experiment 1, differential cuing of Component 2 between sequences and availability of reinforcement during target components were varied across three groups of pigeons; the stimulus-reinforcer relation between target-component cues and schedule of reinforcement in Component 2 was varied within subjects. Control by the Pavlovian relation was demonstrated under all conditions, and anticipatory contrast was not observed. In Experiment 2, target-component duration was systematically varied in the three groups of Experiment 1. Control by the Pavlovian relation was reliably obtained only when target-component behavior was unreinforced, and diminished with increases in component duration. Anticipatory contrast emerged in the two groups for which target-component reinforcement was available. These and other data indicate that Pavlovian effects in multiple schedules may be obscured when the requisite conditions for anticipatory contrast are present.  相似文献

Photographs of faces were presented in a series, either singly or in pairs, for ratings of physical attractiveness. In Experiment 1, faces were presented singly, and both the range and relative frequencies of physical attractiveness (on baseline scaling) were manipulated experimentally. The same face elicited higher ratings when less attractive faces predominated in the experimental series, successive contrast. Increasing the number of available categories resulted in higher ratings but did not reduce the amount of successive contrast. Both range and skewing effects were in accordance with a range-frequency model that permits the subjective range to vary with number of categories. In Experiment 2, faces were presented in pairs. The same face now elicited lower ratings when presented simultaneously with a less attractive face, simultaneous assimilation. Successive contrast was again observed between pairs and was greater for 5- than for 101-point rating scales. A model that uses the judgments resulting from a range-frequency compromise as the stimulus values for integration within pairs provides the best account of how both contrast and assimilation occur within the same experimental session. Alternative interpretations of the observed contrast and assimilation were discussed.  相似文献

Four rhesus monkeys were trained to respond on one key when a one-second noise burst was presented through one speaker and to respond on a second key when the noise burst was presented through a second speaker. The acquisition of stimulus control was studied under three conditions, in each of which the relationship between the sound source and the response-key positions varied: an adjacent condition in which the noise burst was presented through the key and a response on this key was reinforced; a reversed-adjacent condition in which the noise burst was presented through one key and responding on the other key was reinforced: and a nonadiacent condition in which responding on the key nearer the sound was reinforced. Under adjacent conditions, stimulus control developed within one or two sessions. Under reversed and nonadjacent conditions, 10 sessions were required for the development of control. The asymptote of correct responding was the same under each condition in all animals.  相似文献

Presentation of dichotic chords to thirty subjects showed that 23% were right ear dominant, 40% were left ear dominant and 37% had no marked ear dominance. Presentation of dichotic consonant-vowel (CV) signals to the same subjects showed that 70% were right ear dominant and 30% were left ear dominant. Despite the fact that an ear dominance effect was present for both speech and non-speech sounds there was no significant correlation (either positive or negative) between an individual's performance on the two tasks. The performance of native speakers of tonal languages and of musicians was not significantly different from the experimental group of English speaking subjects. These results suggest that the two ear dominance effects are unrelated.  相似文献

In 2 experiments, access to a 0.15% saccharin solution was followed on alternating days by access to a 32% sucrose solution and the same saccharin solution. In Experiment 1, rats increased both intake of and preference for a flavored saccharin solution that predicted sucrose, but neither effect was found using a predictive odor cue alone. Experiment 2 replicated the predictive flavor results but showed suppression of saccharin intake when environmental cues predicted sucrose. When both flavor and environment predicted sucrose, saccharin intake did not change, but preference for the predictive flavor increased. Discriminative taste cues appear to facilitate the development of preference conditioning, but environmental cues favor negative anticipatory contrast effects. Also, preference conditioning and contrast may develop concurrently and compete for expression.  相似文献

Summary

The Comrey Personality Scales were translated into Portuguese and administered to 689 volunteer students at four universities in Rio de Janeiro. Total scores were obtained for 40 homogeneous item subgroups of four items each. These 40 variables plus two validation scale scores, age, and sex were intercorrelated and factor analyzed by the minimum residual method. Orthogonal analytic rotations were carried out by the Tandem Criteria method. The results were compared with those reported in the Comrey Personality Scales manual for an identical study with subjects from the United States. Exactly eight factors were obtained in both studies, and the correspondence between the factors was very close. It was concluded that the major factors of personality are not specific to a given culture.  相似文献

It is argued that an unwarranted dichotomization of geometrical illusions has produced theories whose explanatory scope is limited to either assimilation or contrast. Since recent attempts at integration lack precision, a 1977 unified model of the perception of extent by Brigner was revised to predict accurately both assimilative and contrastive phases of the parallel lines illusion. Application of the revised model to other geometrical illusions was discussed and a means of parsimoniously accounting for variations in assimilative illusions occurring with age and with lightness of the stimulus figure was suggested.  相似文献
