The choice of a name: "Dora" and Freud's relationship with Breuer

I have suggested that Freud's choice of the pseudonym Dora for his eighteen-year-old hysterical patient, Ida Bauer, was over-determined. Dora, it seems likely, was named not only after Freud's sister's nursemaid, as Freud himself explained, but also after Dora Breuer, Josef Breuer's youngest daughter. This theory is based on an examination of the similarities in the lives and symptoms of Anna O. (Breuer's famous hysterical patient of 1880-1882) and Dora; on an analysis of the transferences and countertransferences in the cases of these two young women; and on evidences of the persistent significance of Josef Breuer in Freud's life after 1895. These specific inquiries also call attention to the nature of hysteria at the end of the nineteenth century and to the ever-present complexities of the physician-patient relationship.

Über Einsamkeit, Narzissmus und Intimität

Zusammenfassung Die komplexe Wechselwirkung zwischen narzisstischer Verwundbarkeit, adoleszenter Entwicklung und der F?higkeit zu intimer Beziehung wird aus der Perspektive der unterschiedlichen, jedoch aufeinander bezogenen Erlebnismodalit?ten von Sein und Tun dargestellt. Die hier entwickelte Sicht auf die Einsamkeit beginnt mit einer kritischen Neubewertung des Konzepts der Selbstbezogenheit in Verbindung mit den Schwierigkeiten, Intimit?t herzustellen. Die Schwierigkeiten entstehen im Misslingen der in der Entwicklung vorgezeichneten Integration der beiden Erlebnismodalit?ten in der Zeit der sp?ten Adoleszenz und des jungen Erwachsenenalters. Die Einsamkeit im Leben der Erwachsenen, ihre besondere Auspr?gung und subjektiv erlebte Natur sind determiniert durch die spezifische Modalit?t ihrer prim?ren Organisation. Zur Illustration der Bedeutung der Einsamkeit in der Anwesenheit des Objekts und der paradoxen Unf?higkeit, mit dem Objekt und ohne es zu sein, wird klinisches Material pr?sentiert.

On loneliness, narcissism and intimacy

Summary The complex interplay between narcissistic vulnerability, adolescent development, and the capacity for intimate relatedness is viewed here from the perspective of two distinct but interrelated experiential modes of Being and Doing. I offer a view of loneliness that begins with a critical reappraisal of the concept of narcissistic relatedness in association with difficulties in establishing intimacy. These difficulties are due to failures in the developmentally prescribed integration of the experiential modalities of Being and Doing during the course of late adolescence and young adulthood. The type of loneliness encountered in adult life, its particular cast and subjectively experienced nature, are determined by the specific modality around which it has become primarily organized. Clinical material is presented to illustrate the meaning of loneliness in the presence of the object, and the paradoxical inability to be both with the object and without it.

Die ökologische Dimension der Psychoanalyse und das Konzept der inneren Nachhaltigkeit

Zusammenfassung. Der Autor begründet in seiner Arbeit eine „?kologisch-psychoanalytische” Theorieperspektive, in der er die innere Verwandtschaft zwischen dem modernen ?kologiekritischen Denken und den Menschenbildannahmen der freudianischen Psychoanalyse aufzeigt. Die „kritische ?kologie” befasst sich mit der Frage nach einer sinnvollen, „nachhaltigen” Gestaltung der Kultur-Natur-Beziehung, die Psychoanalyse erforscht und behandelt die innere Selbstbeziehung des Menschen zwischen dem kulturgepr?gt-kulturproduktiven „Ich” und den eigengesetzlichen, natural fundierten motivationalen Seiten der Psyche, die bei Freud als „Es” gefasst werden. Auch die modernen objektbeziehungstheoretischen und selbstpsychologischen Weiterentwicklungen der Psychoanalyse k?nnen vor einem ?kologisch-psychoanalytischen Hintergrund so aufgefasst werden, dass Freuds Fragestellung nach der ge- oder misslingenden Balance bzw. Integration zwischen den motivationalen (Interaktions-) Strebungen der „inneren Natur” einerseits und den Anforderungen der „kulturellen Selbsterzeugung” des Menschen andererseits rahmengebendes Grundthema bleibt. Der Autor macht in seinem Artikel deutlich, dass Psychoanalyse und „kritische ?kologie” gegenseitig voneinander profitieren k?nnen.

The ecological dimension of psychoanalysis and the concept of inner sustainability

Summary. The author develops an ”ecological-psychoanalytical” perspective of theory that shows the inner relationship between the modern eco-critical thinking and the anthropology of Freudian psychoanalysis. ”Critical ecology” engages in the search for a ”sustainable” organisation of the culture-nature-relationship. Psychoanalysis explores and treats the inner self-relation of man among the culture-imprinted/culture-producing ”Ego” and the nature-founded motivational aspects of psychic, that Freud called the ”Id.” The modern developments of object-relation theory and self psychology can be interpreted as reaffirming Freuds thesis of a well balanced or neurotising integration of motivational (interaction-) drives of ”inner nature” at one hand, and the demands of the ”cultural autogenesis” of man on the other. The author suggests that psychoanalysis and human ecology theory can each profit from the other.

Abbruchs-(Re-)Inszenierungen zwischen Scheitern und Chance

Zusammenfassung Die Autorin gibt zun?chst einen kurzen überblick über die bisherige Analyseabbruchsliteratur seit Freuds berühmter Dora-Analyse. Sie beschreibt die Ver?nderung des Blicks auf Behandlungsabbrüche im Kontext der theoretischen und behandlungstechnischen Entwicklungen und hebt hervor, dass die unvermeidlich erfolgenden Verstrickungen von Analytikern mit ihren Patienten bei realen Abbrüchen oder Abbruchsdrohungen heute eher als wichtiges Material und nicht mehr nur als „Kunstfehler“ verstanden und entsprechend weniger scham- sowie schuldhaft erlebt und durchgearbeitet werden k?nnen. Es folgt ein Fallbericht über die schwierige Analyse einer jungen Erwachsenen, die einerseits beharrlich an ihrem destruktiven Agieren auf der Basis ihres narzisstischen Universums und ihrer ?dipalen Verstrickungen festhielt. Andererseits war sie mit aufrichtigem Erkenntnisinteresse dazu bereit, die dramatischen “enactments” zwischen sich und ihrer Analytikerin (re)konstruktiv zu verstehen und sich auf ihren immer wieder bedrohlichen Entwicklungsprozess einzulassen. Anhand von mehreren (über den gesamten Behandlungsverlauf verteilten) Abbruchsinszenierungen beschreibt die Autorin, wie sich über das beharrliche und konkrete Durcharbeiten dieser Szenen mit der Zeit schrittweise ein tieferes Verst?ndnis für deren Sinn und eine Milderung der Wucht der negativen Affekte herstellen lie?en. Den besonderen Akzent bei ihrer Behandlungsführung setzt die Autorin auf die Arbeit an und in der unmittelbaren übertragungsbeziehung zwischen sich und ihrer jungen Patientin: Diese forderte ihre Analytikerin immer wieder heraus, einerseits „Farbe zu bekennen“ und dabei gleichzeitig ihre analytische Professionalit?t verl?sslich aufrechtzuerhalten. Dieser behandlungstechnisch komplizierte Balanceakt zwischen Scheitern und Chance wird n?her beschrieben.

Breaking-off-enactments between failure and chance

Abstract First, an overview of the literature about the breaking off of analyses since Freud's famous Dora case is given. Subsequently, a since then changed view of breakoffs of treatments is presented, derived from new developments in theory and technique of treatment. The inevitable entanglements of analysts and patients in case of breakoffs or threats of breaking off are seen, therefore, nowadays rather as important analytic material instead of viewing it as “malpractice”. They are less loaded with guilt and shame and so easier to work through. A case study is then presented about the difficult analysis of a young adult woman, who on the one side was tenaciously clinging to her destructive acting-outs rooting in her narcissistic universe and her oedipal entanglements. But on the other side she had a genuine interest in getting (re)constructive awareness about the dramatic enactments between herself and her analyst and to engage in a developmental process which had for her again and again a menacing quality. The author describes several breakoff-enactments in the course of this analysis, occuring at different times along the whole treatment, and how their consistent and concrete working through gradually led to a deeper understanding of their meaning and to a moderating of the vehemence of negative affects. The author's emphasize in her treatment was put especially on the work in the transference relationship: the patient challenged the analyst repeatedly on the one side to “come clean” and at the same time to maintain reliably the professional analytic attitude. This complex balancing act between failure and chance is described in detail.

Der Einfluß mnemotechnischer Hilfen auf das Erlernen und Behalten verbalen Materials

Zusammenfassung Der Einfluß mnemotechnischer Hilfen unterschiedlich starker und prägnanter assoziativer Verbindung zum Lemmaterial auf das Erlernen und auf das kurz und langfristige Behalten sinnvoller Wörter wird untersucht. Als mnemotechnische Hilfen finden vom VI vorgegebene häufige, seltene, originelle oder von den Vpn selbsterfundene Assoziationen Verwendung. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, daß sich in der Lernphase dargebotene mnemotechnische Hilfen sowohl auf kurzals auch auf langfristiges Behalten nur dann fördernd auswirken, wenn sie auch zur Reproduktion vorgegeben werden. Unter den verschiedenen mnemotechnischen Hilfen üben seltene Assoziationen den geringsten fördernden Einfluß aus. Häufige Assoziationen steigern die Reproduktionsleistung auch dann, wenn sie nur zur Reproduktion und nicht schon in der Lernphase dargeboten werden. Auf die Anzahl der zum Erreichen des 75%-Kriteriums benötigten Lerndurchgänge nimmt die Vorgabe mnemotechnischer Hilfen kernen Einfluß.

Effects of mnemonic aids on learning and retention of nouns

Summary An experiment was designed to investigate the effects of mnemonic aids varying in degree of associative strenght and Prägnanz (distinctiveness) on learning and recall of nouns. As mnemonics the following types of associations are used: strong, weak, distinctive associations given by E, and associations of S's own choice. The results show that all types of mnemonics in both short- and longterm recall are effective only when presented also during recall. Among the mnemonics used, weak associations have the least retrieval effect. Strong associations facilitate recall efficiency also when presented at recall only without having been offered in the learning stage. The number of trials necessary for attaining the 75%-criterion is not affected by the use of mnemonics.
