A marginalization model for the multidimensional unfolding analysis of ranking data is presented. A subject samples one of a number of random points that are multivariate normally distributed. The subject perceives the distances from the point to all the stimulus points fixed in the same multidimensional space. The distances are error perturbed in this perception process. He/she produces a ranking dependent on these error-perturbed distances. The marginal probability of a ranking is obtained according to this ranking model and by integrating out the subject (ideal point) parameters, assuming the above distribution. One advantage of the model is that the individual differences are captured using the posterior probabilities of subject points. Three sets of ranking data are analyzed by the model.  相似文献

A solution is presented for an internal multidimensional unfolding problem in which all the judgments of a rectangular proximity matrix are a function of a single-ideal object. The solution is obtained by showing that when real and ideal objects are represented by normal distributions in a multidimensional Euclidean space, a vector of distances among a single-ideal and multiple real objects follows a multivariate quadratic form in normal variables distribution. An approximation to the vector's probability density function (PDF) is developed which allows maximum likelihood (ML) solutions to be estimated. Under dependent sampling, the likelihood function contains information about the parametric distances among real object pairs, permitting the estimation of single-ideal solutions and leading to more robust multiple-ideal solutions. Tests for single- vs. multiple-ideal solutions and dependent vs. independent sampling are given. Properties of the proposed model and parameter recovery are explored. Empirical illustrations are also provided.  相似文献

A stochastic model for paired comparisons of multiattribute social stimuli is proposed where one objective is to find the relative importance of the attributes for a judge. The model can be conceived as a special strict binary utility model, i.e., a BTL-model, and is related to of the stimuli are linear combinations of functions of the attributes of the stimuli. The model neither assumes that the functions are fixed in advance nor that different judges have the same set of functions. The choice among such functions, however, is admitted only within a finite scope. Within the framework of exponential families, maximum likelihood estimators and tests are derived and applied to data coming from two psychological experiments.  相似文献

A precise and rapid procedure has been devised for dealing with a matrix of incomplete data in paired comparisons. This method should increase the general applicability of paired comparisons since experiments involving large numbers of stimuli may now be shortened to feasible experimental proportions. Also, we may now use sets of stimuli which cover a wide range, resulting in a considerable number of 100 per cent vs. 0 per cent judgments, and still give a precise solution depending equally on each of the observations. This study was supported in part by the Office of Naval Research Contract N6onr-270-20 with Princeton University and by the National Science Foundation Grant G-642. Summary A probabilistic multidimensional model of location discrimination is developed and applied to data from an experiment in which subjects are required to determine whether a briefly presented horizontal and vertical bar are touching. The proposed gap-detection model assumes that errors in perception are due to variability in the perceived location and/or in the perceived length of the bars. A series of gap-detection models that allow variability only in perceived location were rejected on the basis of likelihood-ratio tests of overall goodness of fit. However, when the models were modified to account for: (a) a compression of the distance perceived between the bars (Wolford, 1975), or (b) the bisection illusion (Künnapas, 1955), excellent absolute fits to the data were obtained. A pair of models that suggests that the horizontal/vertical illusion or a response bias was operative failed. Applications of the model to more conventional object-perception experiments (e. g., the illusory-conjunction experiment) are discussed.  相似文献

A procedure for ordering object (stimulus) pairs based on individual preference ratings is described. The basic assumption is that individual responses are consistent with a nonmetric multidimensional unfolding model. The method requires data where a numerical response is independently generated for each individual-object pair. In conjunction with a nonmetric multidimensional scaling procedure, it provides a vehicle for recovering meaningful object configurations. The author wishes to thank Jack Hoadley, Larry Mayer, Sheldon Newhouse, Stuart Rabinowitz, Forrest Young, and three anonymous reviewers for their useful suggestions.  相似文献

Two constrained multidimensional unfolding models, the goal point and slide vector models, are proposed for analyzing confusion matrices. In both models, the row and column stimuli are expressed as two sets of points in a low-dimensional space, where the difference vector connecting a column point to the corresponding row point indicates the change in the stimulus representation through a cognitive process. The difference vector is constrained by the hypothesis that the trend in the representational change is invariant across stimuli: the goal point model constrains all difference vectors to point toward a single point, and the slide vector model constrains all difference vectors to be parallel to each other. In both models the coordinates of points are estimated by the maximum-likelihood method. Examples illustrate that the two models allow us to examine hypotheses about invariant trends in representational changes and to grasp such trends from the resulting configurations.  相似文献

Interpersonally incomparable responses pose a significant problem for survey researchers. If the manifest responses of individuals differ from their underlying true responses by monotonic transformations which vary from person to person, then the covariances of the manifest responses tools such as factor analysis may yield incorrect results. Satisfactory results for interpersonally incomparable ordinal responses can be obtained by assuming that rankings are based upon a set of multivariate normal latent variables which satisfy the factor or ideal point models of choice. Two statistical methods based upon these assumptions are described; their statistical properties are explored; and their computational feasibility is demonstrated in some simulations. We conclude that is possible to develop methods for factor and ideal point analysis of interpersonally incomparable ordinal data. This research was begun in the supportive enviroment of the Survey Research Center at the University of California, Berkeley. This paper presents a stochastic multidimensional unfolding (MDU) procedure to spatially represent individual differences in phased or sequential decision processes. The specific application or scenario to be discussed involves the area of consumer psychology where consumers form judgments sequentially in their awareness, consideration, and choice set compositions in a phased or sequential manner as more information about the alternative brands in a designated product/service class are collected. A brief review of the consumer psychology literature on these nested congnitive sets as stages in phased decision making is provided. The technical details of the proposed model, maximum likelihood estimation framework, and algorithm are then discussed. A small scale Monte Carlo analysis is presented to demonstrate estimation proficiency and the appropriateness of the proposed model selection heuristic. An application of the methodology to capture awareness, consideration, and choice sets in graduate school applicants is presented. Finally, directions for future research and other potential applications are given.  相似文献

When scaling a large number of stimuli from comparative judgments, considerable savings in time and labor may be realized if stimuli are presented in triad form rather than in pairs. If, forN stimuli, the proper configuration of triads can be assembled so that all possible pairs appear once, the paired judgment matrix may be reproduced with one-third fewer judgments and two-thirds fewer presentations than would be required with complete pairing. A simple procedure is described for enumerating triad configurations for whichN is an odd multiple of three.  相似文献

Many item response theory (IRT) models take a multidimensional perspective to deal with sources that induce local item dependence (LID), with these models often making an orthogonal assumption about the dimensional structure of the data. One reason for this assumption is because of the indeterminacy issue in estimating the correlations among the dimensions in structures often specified to deal with sources of LID (e.g., bifactor and two-tier structures), and the assumption usually goes untested. Unfortunately, the mere fact that assessing these correlations is a challenge for some estimation methods does not mean that data seen in practice support such orthogonal structure. In this paper, a Bayesian multilevel multidimensional IRT model for locally dependent data is presented. This model can test whether item response data violate the orthogonal assumption that many IRT models make about the dimensional structure of the data when addressing sources of LID, and this test is carried out at the dimensional level while accounting for sampling clusters. Simulations show that the model presented is effective at carrying out this task. The utility of the model is also illustrated on an empirical data set.  相似文献

According to the Threshold Theory (Hampton, 1995, 2007) semantic categorization decisions come about through the placement of a threshold criterion along a dimension that represents items' similarity to the category representation. The adequacy of this theory is assessed by applying a formalization of the theory, known as the Rasch model (Rasch, 1960; Thissen & Steinberg, 1986), to categorization data for eight natural language categories and subjecting it to a formal test. In validating the model special care is given to its ability to account for inter- and intra-individual differences in categorization and their relationship with item typicality. Extensions of the Rasch model that can be used to uncover the nature of category representations and the sources of categorization differences are discussed.  相似文献

A ratio scale of subjective magnitude is developed from paired-comparison data. The model attempts to combine arguments of Restle, Ekman, and Luce relating data obtained from paired comparisons and corresponding data from direct psychophysical scaling methods at the ratio level. The basic set-theoretical model involves the use of imperfectly nested sets. A numerical example illustrates the application of the theory. This research was supported by the Swedish Social Science Research Council and by the Swedish Board of Computing Machinery. From a theoretical point of view, paired comparisons and the law of comparative judgment provide an excellent approach to the problem of psychological measurement. However, if a reasonably large number of stimuli are to be investigated, paired comparisons become extremely time-consuming and fatiguing to the subjects. A balanced incomplete block design, requiring multiple rank order judgments for each subject, provides an efficient experimental method for obtaining paired comparisons judgments. Features of the analysis proposed for this design are discussed in detail. A program for the analysis is available for the IBM 650 electronic computer.Prepared in connection with research done under Office of Naval Research Contract Nonr 1858-(15), Project Designation NR 150-088, and National Science Foundation Grant G-3407. A test of goodness of fit is developed for Thurstone's method of paired comparisons, Case V. The test involves the computation of , wheren is the number of observations per pair, and and are the angles obtained by applying the inverse sine transformation to the fitted and the observed proportions respectively. The number of degrees of freedom is (k–1) (k–2)/2.This research was performed in the Laboratory of Social Relations under a grant made available to Harvard University by the RAND Corporation under the Department of the Air Force, Project RAND.  相似文献

A nonmetric coordinate adjustment technique is developed which determines scale values for objects whose interobject intervals (differences in subjective value) have been directly compared. In Monte Carlo simulations, the degree of metric determinancy of the scale values is shown to be quite high even when the amount of error is relatively high. This robustness under high-error conditions permitted the analysis of individual subject data in experiments on the direct comparison of loudness differences and loudness ratios where only one judgment per interval comparison was obtained per subject. This research was supported by a grant from the National Research Council of Canada.  相似文献

Investigation of the effects of a series of treatment conditions upon some social behaviors may require observation of a set of subjects which have been mutually paired, in round-robin fashion. Data arising from such experiments are difficult to analyze, partly because they do not fit neatly into standard designs. A paired compositions scaling model due to Bechtel is adapted to provide a linear model for such round-robin experiments. Both fixed and mixed versions of the model are considered and some results of a Monte Carlo study of the mixed model are reported. The model is applied to illustrative data from the field of physiological psychology.  相似文献

The computer program ALICE solves the two major problems of data manipulation and analysis. First, ALICE allows the user to treat data from an experiment in the form they are generated. Second, mathematical calculations and statistical analyses are included as an intrinsic part of the multidimensional approach to data handling. ALICE accepts raw data in the form and order they were collected; reorganizes, partitions, or selects any subset of them (including a single entry), and arithmetically combines, transforms, or evaluates any formula involving them. Furthermore, learning to use ALICE is simple, even for those who are naive to both computers and data analysis.  相似文献
