Analyzing The Multitrait-Multimethod Matrix

The heuristic strategy proposed by Campbell and Fiske for investigating convergent and discriminant validity is rephrased within a more precise statistical framework. First of all, several indices are defined that mirror the properties within a multitrait-multimethod matrix that are supposed to reflect the two notions of validity. Then, based on a simple nonparametric model, a general significance testing procedure is developed that may be used to evaluate the size of each index. Although the suggested inference technique does add a formal structure to the intuitive methods advocated by Campbell and Fiske, the intent of the discussion remains close to their original philosophy.     

Hill on phenomenal consciousness

I argue that it is at least open to a proponent of type materialism for phenomenal consciousness to accept Hill’s representational theory of experiential awareness of perceptual qualia.     

The Mutually Facilitating Maturational Matrix

The author discusses several significant points made by Dr. Lewis Aron in his rich discussion of birth fantasies and themes in relation to perinatal familial circumstances. Contributing a wide variety of clinical vignettes, Dr. Willock portrays the possibility (perhaps the necessity) of revisiting and revising these foundational fantasies as the patient’s internal object world is reconfigured. New birth fantasies often first see the light of day in dreams. As the transformative thrust gains momentum, constricted repetition yields to promising renaissance. New hope and enthusiasm begins replacing archaic, limiting, organizing principles. Embracing a comparative-integrative approach, the author considers a year of the analysis described by Dr. Aron from multiple perspectives. Each viewpoint contributes something unique to our understanding. Combined, these diverse frameworks shed valuable light on the nature of the presenting difficulties and the impressive analytic progress achieved by Dr. Aron and his analysand.     

The Sexual Orientation Matrix for Supervision

SUMMARY

The Sexual Orientation Matrix for Supervision (SOMS) was created in order to assist supervisors and trainers in preparing supervisees to work with lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) clients. The SOMS was developed around two core concepts: (1) degree of heterosexual bias, and (2) degree of acceptance of LGB orientations and behavior. Supervisors can employ the matrix to explore both their own and their supervisee's levels of comfort, knowledge, and experience in working with LGB clients including same-sex couples. This article describes the development of the matrix, an exploration of the concepts underlying this tool, and an explanation of how to use the matrix, including suggested tasks for supervision of therapists working with same-sex couples.     

The Assertive Interaction Coding System

Conceptual and theoretical issues concerning the assessment of assertive behavior are discussed. A summary of a variety of instruments utilized in experimental and clinical settings is offered that reflects these issues. This review is followed by the presentation of a new assessment device developed by the authors—the Assertive Interaction Coding System. Research evidence as to its reliability and validity in experimental and clinical settings is presented. Implications for its use in clinical and research protocols are addressed.

The Affective Regulation of Social Interaction

The recent publication of David Heise's Expressive Order (2007) provides an occasion for discussing some of the key ideas in Affect Control Theory. The theory proposes that a few dimensions of affective meaning provide a common basis for interrelating personal identities and social actions. It holds that during interpersonal interactions, social behavior is continually regulated to maintain an affective tone compatible with whatever social roles or identities define the situation. We outline the intellectual history of the proposed dimensions and of the idea that each social action invites an action from the other that has a particular location along these dimensions. We also relate these ideas to the Affect-as-Information hypothesis, an approach that often guides research in psychology on the role of affect in regulating judgment and thought.     

The Biological Basis of Social Interaction

The fact that brain disorder can impair social interactions in different ways suggests that social competence has multiple components that have foundations in brain systems. The physiological basis of one aspect of social cognition, theory of mind, is just beginning to be understood. Brain-imaging studies suggest that a network of areas linking medial prefrontal and temporal cortex forms the neural substrate of mentalizing, that is, representing one's own and other people's mental states. The medial prefrontal areas are prominent also in tasks that involve self-monitoring, whereas the temporal regions are prominent also in tasks that involve the representation of goals of actions. We speculate that the precursors of mentalizing ability derive from a brain system that evolved for representing agents and actions, and the relationships between them.

采用经典的心理理论任务、同伴提名法、父母教养方式问卷以及在游戏情境中观察同伴交往行为和亲子交往行为等多种方法,探讨同伴交往、亲子交往与儿童心理理论发展的关系.88名3-6岁儿童及其家长参加了实验.研究结果表明:(1)交往类型中受欢迎儿童,其心理理论发展水平显著高于被拒绝和被忽视儿童.(2)民主型教养方式最有利于促进幼儿心理理论的发展,放任型教养方式最不利于幼儿心理理论的发展.(3)家长指导游戏的行为、分享情感的行为和使用心理状态术语的行为,有利于促进孩子心理理论的发展,而对孩子的冷漠最不利于孩子心理理论的发展.(4)相对于同伴交往,亲子交往对儿童心理理论的发展有更显著的预测力,其中家长和孩子的情感分享.对孩子遇到问题的解释及指导是促进孩子心理理论发展的重要影响因素.
