Whether done explicitly or not, counselors structure the therapeutic relationship. Clients benefit because they are not left guessing about the ground rules. Counselors benefit from not having to redecide every time a new situation arises. Providing clients with the ground rules in writing helps counselors and their clients operate from a common frame of reference and reduces the likelihood that nontherapeutic issues will become a source of conflict. The author describes one practitioner's experiences in preparing and using guidelines with clients seen in a small private practice.     

Mental Imagery in Career Counseling and Life Planning: A Review of Research and Intervention Methods

The use of imagery in career counseling and life planning continues to increase just as the use of imagery in counseling and psychotherapy increases. The rationale for using imagery in career counseling and life planning is the same as in counseling and psychotherapy: It allows the client and counselor to bring into awareness unconscious material that is already influencing choices and makes this material usable in future planning. Imagey also allows the client to try on alternative roles. Several studies are cited that indicate that the imagery components of daydreams and fantasies are useful tools for career exploration and life planning when they are accessible to clients and properly processed. Relevant counseling applications and research studies are cited. Some recent tools for eliciting and processing these daydreams and fantasies are presented, and limits as well as benefits of techniques are discussed.     

Differences in Career and Life Planning Between African American and Caucasian Undergraduate Women

Women, especially African American women, have traditionally been in low‐paying careers. This exploratory study examined how career aspirations are affected by future career and family plans. Results revealed that African American undergraduate women had higher career aspirations than Caucasian undergraduate women and also planned for multiple roles in the future. Las mujeres, sobre todo las mujeres Afroamericanas, han desarrollado tradicionalmente sus carreras en trabajos de menor remuneración. Este estudio exploratorio examinó cómo las aspiraciones de carrera son afectadas por los planes futuros de carrera y familia. Los resultados revelaron que las estudiantes universitarias Afroamericanas tenían aspiraciones de carrera más elevadas que las estudiantes Caucásicas, y también planeaban tener múltiples roles en el futuro.     

Self-Directed Career Planning for Persons with Disabilities

Persons with physical disabilities often confront barriers to employment. This article describes a career development project that has addressed the special needs of disabled adults by: (a) developing a multimedia-based, self-directed career planning program organized around modules tailored to meet the unique needs of adults with disabilities; (b) providing a training program for 15 disabled adults working as paraprofessional career guidance technicians; and (c) establishing linkages with educational institutions and community agencies to provide for the institutionalization of this project at the local level.

Perceptions of Parenthood Among Young Adults: Implications for Career and Family Planning

Motivations and expectations of parenthood were assessed in 505 female and male undergraduate students. Parents and those intending to have children agreed more strongly with intrinsic motivations and also endorsed more benefits for having children than did the unsure group. Those intending to have children estimated costs of parenthood to be significantly less than either parents or those unsure of having children. Women across all three parenting groups estimated the costs of parenthood to be higher than did male respondents. Results are discussed in the framework of violated expectations and the need for prepregnancy intervention programs.
