This article investigates the types of intentionality involved in human–technology relations. It aims to augment Don Ihde’s
analysis of the relations between human beings and technological artifacts, by analyzing a number of concrete examples at
the limits of Ihde’s analysis. The article distinguishes and analyzes three types of “cyborg intentionality,” which all involve
specific blends of the human and the technological. Technologically mediated intentionality occurs when human intentionality takes place “through” technological artifacts; hybrid intentionality occurs when the technological actually merges with the human; and composite intentionality is the addition of human intentionality and the intentionality of technological artifacts.

Starting from the observation that small children can count more objects than numbers—a phenomenon that I am calling the “lifeworld
dependency of cognition”—and an analysis of finger calculation, the paper shows how learning can be explained as the development
of cognitive systems. Parts of those systems are not only an individual’s different forms of knowledge and cognitive abilities,
but also other people, things, and signs. The paper argues that cognitive systems are first of all semiotic systems since
they are dependent on signs and representations as mediators. The two main questions discussed here are how the external world
constrains and promotes the development of cognitive abilities, and how we can move from cognitive abilities that are necessarily
connected with concrete situations to abstract knowledge.

According to mentalism some existing things are endowed with (subjectively) conscious minds. According to physicalism all existing things consist entirely of physical particles in fields of force. Searle holds that mentalism and physicalism are
compatible and true—“the world is one”. The aim of this paper is to show that Searle fails to make the compatibility between
mentalism and physicalism intelligible. The paper has three parts: first, I criticize drawing an analogy between solidity
and consciousness as macro-features of systems with micro-features. Second, I argue that Searle’s defence of the ontological
irreducibility of consciousness is terminologically confused and that his argument for the trivial nature of that irreducibility
is unsuccessful. Third, I defend Nagel’s argument for the causal irreducibility of conscious minds by answering some of Searle’s
objections to it.

In my “Promising and Supererogation” I argue that one cannot fulfill promises to perform supererogatory actions (such as “I hereby promise to perform one supererogatory action every month”). In a response to my paper, David Heyd argues that there is an alternative solution to the problem I raise. While I agree with much that Heyd says about the examples he discusses, his proposed solution involves a crucial alteration of the problem; his proposed solution does not solve the problem I present.

This essay considers how we “create meaning” in the interplay of “felt sense” and “symbols,” and examines the direct and immediate interplay between some common everyday experiences and a series of concepts from psychoanalytic perspectives to reveal how this interplay has affinities with religion. Psychoanalysis and religion are overlapping projects. Psychoanalytic symbolizing of experience facilitates our knowing features of religion not previously known, as well as knowing features previously known, in new ways.

The aim of this article is to strengthen links between cognitive brain research and formal logic. The work covers three fundamental
sorts of logical inferences: reasoning in the propositional calculus, i.e. inferences with the conditional “if...then”, reasoning
in the predicate calculus, i.e. inferences based on quantifiers such as “all”, “some”, “none”, and reasoning with n-place
relations. Studies with brain-damaged patients and neuroimaging experiments indicate that such logical inferences are implemented
in overlapping but different bilateral cortical networks, including parts of the fronto-temporal cortex, the posterior parietal
cortex, and the visual cortices. I argue that these findings show that we do not use a single deterministic strategy for solving
logical reasoning problems. This account resolves many disputes about how humans reason logically and why we sometimes deviate
from the norms of formal logic.

Emotion theorists tend to separate “arousal” and other bodily events such as “actions” from the evaluative component of emotion
known as “appraisal.” This separation, I argue, implies phenomenologically implausible accounts of emotion elicitation and
personhood. As an alternative, I attempt a reconceptualization of the notion of appraisal within the so-called “enactive approach.”
I argue that appraisal is constituted by arousal and action, and I show how this view relates to an embodied and affective
notion of personhood.

In this article we defend the inferential view of scientific models and idealisation. Models are seen as “inferential prostheses”
(instruments for surrogative reasoning) construed by means of an idealisation-concretisation process, which we essentially
understand as a kind of counterfactual deformation procedure (also analysed in inferential terms). The value of scientific
representation is understood in terms not only of the success of the inferential outcomes arrived at with its help, but also
of the heuristic power of representation and their capacity to correct and improve our models. This provides us with an argument
against Sugden’s account of credible models: the likelihood or realisticness (their “credibility”) is not always a good measure
of their acceptability. As opposed to “credibility” we propose the notion of “enlightening”, which is the capacity of giving
us understanding in the sense of an inferential ability.

In this paper I discuss the nature of the “I” (or “self”) and whether it is presupposed by the very existence of conscious experiences (as that which “has” them) or whether it is, instead, in some way constituted by them. I argue for the former view and try to show that the very nature of experience implies a non-constituted synchronic
and diachronic transcendence of the experiencing “I” with regard to its experiences, an “I” which defies any objective characterization.
Finally I suggest that the self, though irreducible to inter-experiential relations, is not a “separately existing entity”,
but should be conceived of as a dimension, namely the dimension of first-personal manifestation of the experiences.

The paper assumes that education is part of the process of discursive construction of society. The theoretical framework on
which this argument is based includes Ernesto Laclau’s theory of the “ontological impossibility and political necessity of
society”, and the role discourse and empty signifiers play in the establishment of political identities. Laclau’s theory is
supplemented here by ideas of Derrida, Lacan, Žižek and Marx, and by other traits in contemporary semiotics that relate to
the notion of “the void” in semantic systems. My claim is that empty signifiers, crucial to the production of the totality
of society, are discursively produced, among others, in pedagogical debates. This is illustrated by one historical example
(Rouuseau), which gives ground for more contemporary analyses, and on the basis of the present economic discourse of educating
and the idea of “knowledge society”. The main conclusion is that education, in contemporary discourse of learning, becomes
a neurotic symptom of the lack of overt domination in social relations.

Academic popularizers of the new field of evolutionary psychology make notable appeals to William James to bolster their doctrine.
In particular, they cite James’ remark that humans have all the “impulses” animals do and many more besides to shore up their
claim that people’s “instincts” account for their flexibility. This essay argues that these scholars misinterpret James on
the instincts. Consciousness (which they find inscrutable) explains cognitive flexibility for James. The evolutionary psychologists’
appeal to James is, therefore, unwarranted and, given the conditions relevant to the public and professional audiences they
address, also ineffective as a rhetorical tool for enlisting new recruits.

Advocates of sortal essentialism have argued that concepts like “thing” or “object” lack the unambiguous individuative criteria
necessary to play the role of genuine sortals in reference. Instead, they function as “dummy sortals” which are placeholders
or incomplete designations. In disqualifying apparent placeholder sortals, however, these philosophers have posed insuperable
problems for accounts of childhood conceptual development. I argue that recent evidence in psychology demonstrates that children do possess simple or basic sortals of physical objects or things. I contend that these concepts provide the genuine individuative
criteria necessary for reference. As a consequence, sortalism can be made compatible with the developmental facts of conceptual
development.

This ethnographic paper builds on previous research on the Tablighi Jama‘at by delving deeper into the ways in which the movement
creates identity and community among Muslims living in modern/post-modern urban spaces. The paper is grounded in the theoretical
framework provided by Robert Orsi in his introduction to Gods of the City (1999). In his lengthy introduction, Orsi describes
contemporary urban cultural theory. This theory posits metropolitan regions as comprising “complex networks of “pathways”
that city people travel in” (51). Along these “pathways” city dwellers create networks of association that in turn become
ways of life and communities. Orsi notes that, “urban religious idioms have responded to the spatial dilemmas created by the
circumstances of diaspora and dislocation” (51). These urban religious idioms often involve intra-communal outreach that seeks
to inculcate community members with a cognitive “map” of the surrounding urban spaces, marking off both desirable and forbidden
places. I argue that this is precisely what the Tablighi Jama‘at seeks to engender in urban spaces such as Southwestern Ontario,
and this study is undertaken to better understand this process of identity construction and community creation.
