Healing the Wounds of the Mahantdori

The magnitude of the Mahantdori, or Cambodian holocaust, must be understood by therapists who are trying to help the survivors deal with the illness and injuries that are a product of this destruction. This paper presents an overview of the events that have come to be known as the Mahantdori and a model for treating the multiple levels of trauma with which the Cambodian family must deal. The Contextual Model of Family Therapy, as described by Ivan Borzormenyi-Nagy, is used as the structure for helping to rebuild trust within the family while at the same time treating the injuries of the individual family members. The changing role of Cambodian women and their need to form new support groups because of their devastating loss of family are described.

Response to Friedman and Brison

Here, Hirschmann responds to Marilyn Friedman and Susan]. Brison's comments on The Subject of Liberty: Toward a Feminist Theory of Freedom. She clarifies some aspects of her social construction argument, articulates the role of discourse and its relation to material reality, and explicates the potentially paradoxical case of support for women's choices when those choices produce harm.

The author summarizes some of the views of the founder of the Contextual Family Therapy approach, Ivan Boszormenyi-Nagy, M.D., that lead to an integration of Object Relations Theories with the more recent Family Systems Theories. She then examines the relevance of some of the concepts decribed in Contextual Therapy for an understanding of the functioning of healthy couples.

Response

This essay is a response to the comments and critique, included in this issue, of Claudia Card and Marilyn Friedman to my book, A Passion for Friends. In this response, I emphasize the crucial distinction between female separation and dissociation from the world, so as to register the difference between the positive and negative separations in which women are engaged. I also expand the discussion of individuality and individualism. The latter has arisen within the context of a feminist liberal campaign for sexual liberation which defends, among other things, sadomasochism, prostitution, pornography, and surrogacy.
