Studies investigating whether simultaneous bilateral movements can facilitate performance of the impaired limb(s) of stroke patients have returned mixed results. In the present study we compared unilateral limb performance (amplitude, cycle duration) with performance during an interlimb coordination task involving both homologous (both arms, both legs) and non-homologous (one arm, one leg) limbs in stroke participants (n=7) and healthy age-matched controls (n=7). In addition, the effect of on-line augmented visual feedback on interlimb coordination was investigated. Participants performed cyclical flexion-extension movements of the arms and legs in the sagittal plane paced by an auditory metronome (1 Hz). Movement amplitudes were larger and cycle durations shorter during homologous limb coordination than non-homologous coordination. Compared with unilateral movements both groups had reduced movement amplitudes and the stroke group increased cycle duration when interlimb coordination tasks were performed. These effects were most evident during non-homologous (arm and leg) coordination. No evidence of facilitation of the impaired limb(s) was found in any of the interlimb coordination conditions. Augmented visual feedback had minimal effect on the movements of control participants but lead to an increase of cycle duration for stroke participants.  相似文献

In the first few months of life, infants display spontaneous kicking which has been implicated as an important precursor to the development of later voluntary motor control. In the present study, the development of both intralimb and interlimb coordination in fullterm and low-risk preterm infants was examined by recording spontaneous kicking at 4 weekly intervals from 4 to 24 weeks of age. The relationship between the joint angles over this period was examined by measuring pairwise cross-correlation functions for the angular displacement curves of the hip, knee and ankle joints. In contrast to previous studies, intralimb coordination for both right and left legs was examined, and it was found that the legs produced different patterns of development. These patterns varied depending on which joint pair was investigated, and there was also evidence that leg asymmetries may be different for preterm and fullterm infants. This has possible implications for later hand and leg preferences. Interlimb coordination was also examined, and it appears that different patterns of development emerge for interlimb and intralimb coordination.PsycINFO classification: 2330; 2800  相似文献

This study aimed to examine the effects of directing attention to the spatial dimension of the circle-drawing task on interlimb coordination patterns across limbs. Eighteen participants performed a circle-drawing task involving in-phase and antiphase coordination modes under upper limb, contralateral and ipsilateral limb combinations. Results indicated that (a) coordination pattern stability co-varied with central cost when attentional focus was directed to the spatial dimensions of the interlimb circle-drawing task; (b) attentional focus on the spatial components modified the inherent performance asymmetries between the limbs; (c) finally, attention to the spatial components of the interlimb circle-drawing task modulated movement trajectories and at the same time the stability of temporal coordination.  相似文献

This study explores the relation of white matter disorder (WMD) to intralimb coordination patterns in premature infants with very low birth weight (VLBW). We specifically measured the temporal-spatial characteristics of intralimb coordination patterns of the legs. Three groups of infants were compared at one month corrected age (CA): 10 premature infants born VLBW and WMD (PTWMD), 10 premature infants born VLBW without WMD (PT) and 10 full term infants (FT). Using kinematic variables, we discriminate among VLBW infants with WMD from the two comparison groups. Infants born with WMD maintain patterns of tight coupling among leg joints (all flexion or all extension) while PT and FT term infants have begun to decouple leg joints by this age (combinations of flexion with extension). The coupling pattern is captured through joint correlations, discrete relative phase, and phase plane portraits. The PTWMD infants also demonstrate aberrant patterns of coordination evident through both temporal and spatial characteristics of the kicks. This is the first evidence that movement disorder associated with brain lesions can be identified and quantified with kinematic variables as early as one month of age.  相似文献

The authors examined whether infants of about 1 year return to 2-handed reaching when they begin to walk independently. Infants (N = 9) were followed longitudinally before, during, and after their transition to upright locomotion. Every week, the infants' reaching responses and patterns of interlimb coordination were screened in 3 tasks involving different adaptive reaching responses. Before the onset of upright locomotion, the infants responded to each task adaptively. Following walking onset, they increased their rate of 2-handed responses in all tasks. The 2-handed responses declined when the infants gained better balance control. The results suggest that infants' return to 2-handed reaching is experience dependent. Those findings are discussed in terms of the integration of new developing motor skills into existing cognitive and motor repertoires.  相似文献

The present work investigated the effects of spatial and neuromuscular constraints on the mean states and variability of interlimb coordination patterns performed in the para-sagittal plane of motion in a hand-held pendulum oscillation task. Nine right-handed students had to oscillate two pendulums through wrist adduction-abduction movements. Relative movement direction was manipulated by asking participants to perform both isodirectional and non-isodirectional movements. Participants were required to grab the pendulums either with both forearms in the same neutral or supine posture or with one forearm in neutral while the other one was in prone-inversed position. When both forearms were in a similar posture, isodirectional movements were generated predominantly by simultaneous activation of homologous muscle groups whereas non-isodirectional movements mainly resulted from simultaneous activation of non-homologous muscle groups. When forearms were in dissimilar posture, isodirectional movements were generated predominantly by the simultaneous activation of non-homologous muscle groups whereas non-isodirectional movements mainly resulted from simultaneous activation of homologous muscle groups. Standard deviation of relative phase and absolute error of relative phase were analyzed for each forearm posture condition. We hypothesized that neuromuscular and spatial constraints would affect two different aspects of coordination performance, i.e., pattern stability and accuracy, respectively. Comparison of the results obtained for similar and dissimilar postures suggested that changes of pattern stability were mediated by changes in the nature of the muscle activation patterns that gave rise to wrist movement in each condition. On the other hand, the results also showed that movement direction exclusively affected phase shift. The findings are consistent with the conclusion of Park et al. [Park, H., Collins, D. R., & Turvey, M. T. (2001). Dissociation of muscular and spatial constraints on patterns of interlimb coordination. Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance, 27, 32-47.] that neuromuscular constraints affect variability of relative phase (attractor strength) and spatial constraints affect the shift of relative phase (attractor location).  相似文献

Many studies have shown that rhythmic interlimb coordination involves perception of the coupled limb movements, and different sensory modalities can be used. Using visual displays to inform the coupled bimanual movement, novel bimanual coordination patterns can be learned with practice. A recent study showed that similar learning occurred without vision when a coach provided manual guidance during practice. The information provided via the two different modalities may be same (amodal) or different (modality specific). If it is different, then learning with both is a dual task, and one source of information might be used in preference to the other in performing the task when both are available. In the current study, participants learned a novel 90° bimanual coordination pattern without or with visual information in addition to kinesthesis. In posttest, all participants were tested without and with visual information in addition to kinesthesis. When tested with visual information, all participants exhibited performance that was significantly improved by practice. When tested without visual information, participants who practiced using only kinesthetic information showed improvement, but those who practiced with visual information in addition showed remarkably less improvement. The results indicate that (1) the information is not amodal, (2) use of a single type of information was preferred, and (3) the preferred information was visual. We also hypothesized that older participants might be more likely to acquire dual task performance given their greater experience of the two sensory modes in combination, but results were replicated with both 20- and 50-year-olds.  相似文献

Studies of rhythmic bimanual coordination under dual-task conditions revealed (1) a dependence of secondary task performance on the stability of coordinative tasks, in that secondary task performance was better during in-phase than antiphase coordination, and (2) a shift in the mean relative phasing between the limbs compared to single-task conditions. The present study aimed to account for these phenomena by dissociating three qualitatively different interactions between the limbs that govern this motor behavior, related to movement planning, error correction, and interlimb reflex activity. The experiment probed the cognitive demands associated with each interlimb interaction by examining the attentional load under dual-task conditions, indexed by reaction times of the secondary task and kinematic changes in the coordinative tasks relative to single-task conditions. First, only in the condition that involved interlimb interactions at the level of movement planning reaction times were shorter for in-phase than for antiphase coordination, highlighting an intimate relation between movement planning and attentional processes. Second, under dual-task conditions a shift in the mean relative phase was observed relative to single-task conditions, but only for the interlimb interactions that depend directly on sensory feedback (error correction and interlimb reflex activity). These observations qualified the effects of attentional load reported in previous studies. Third, reaction times varied systematically over the movement cycle. These variations revealed a dynamical signature of the attentional load that differed between the three interlimb interactions.  相似文献

The present study focuses on interlimb coordination in walking with an above-knee prosthesis using concepts and tools of dynamical systems theory (DST). Prosthetic walkers are an interesting group to investigate from this theory because their locomotory system is inherently asymmetric, while, according to DST, coordinative stability may be expected to be reduced as a function of the asymmetry of the oscillating components. Furthermore, previous work on locomotion motivated from DST has shown that the stability of interlimb coordination increases with walking velocity, leading to the additional expectation that the anticipated destabilizing effect of the prosthesis-induced asymmetry may be diminished at higher walking velocities. To examine these expectations, an experiment was conducted aimed at comparing interlimb coordination during treadmill walking between seven participants with an above-knee prosthesis and seven controls across a range of walking velocities. The observed gait patterns were analyzed in terms of standard gait measures (i.e., absolute and relative swing, stance and step times) and interlimb coordination measures (i.e., relative phase and frequency locking). As expected, the asymmetry brought about by the prosthesis led to a decrease in the stability of the coordination between the legs as compared to the control group, while coordinative stability increased with increasing walking velocity in both groups in the absence of a significant interaction. In addition, the 2:1 frequency coordination between arm and leg movements that is generally observed in healthy walkers at low walking velocities was absent in the prosthetic walkers. Collectively, these results suggest that both stability and adaptability of coordination are reduced in prosthetic walkers but may be enhanced by training them to walk at higher velocities.  相似文献

Motor skills that require limbs to concurrently produce different spatiotemporal patterns are often quite difficult to learn. This article outlines a general strategy for training subjects to perform skills that require such disparate limb movements. The strategy is based on the notion that certain preferred movement patterns naturally emerge through the dynamics of the perceptual-motor system, even when quite different movements are intended. The training strategy proposes that the acquisition of relative motion patterns that diverge from preferred patterns can be facilitated by initially "tuning" system dynamics to reduce interlimb attraction. The schedule for the dynamical tuning is adopted from the adaptive training method previously applied to tracking tasks. Preliminary evidence is provided in support of this strategy for learning a bimanual task requiring both structural and metrical interlimb decoupling.  相似文献

Changes in interlimb coupling, and their role in the development of bimanual coordination, were studied longitudinally in 6- to 12-month-old infants (N = 6). Infants were observed while they were reaching for simple objects of 2 different sizes. Their use of a uni-versus bimanual strategy for reaching as well as the coupling of their bimanual movements were compared; progress in bimanual coordination of complementary movements was evaluated on 8 different bimanual tasks. The bimanual tasks involved an asymmetrical cooperation between the 2 hands. Although spatiotemporal coupling of bimanual reaching movements did not decrease during the age period studied, infants around 7 months of age used their 2 hands infrequently for reaching. Occurrences of bimanual reaching were particularly low at the session preceding the first bimanual success at a bimanual task. This suggests that the temporal coincidence between greater independence of the 2 hands and progress in bimanual coordination of complementary movements acts in 2 directions: Infants may be more at ease when using their 2 hands in differentiated patterns as the hands move less in synchrony, but, in turn, they may be less likely to move their hands in synchrony as the anticipate mirror manipulations of the object less. The frequency of bimanual reaches increased toward the end of the 1st year. This might have been caused by an increase in the repertoire of bimanual asymmetrical object manipulations and by the fact that the development of bimanual coordination allows infants to manipulate objects with complementary movements even after a bimanual approach toward the object.  相似文献

Three-month-old infants were trained to move a mobile in the presence of a coconut or cherry odor (context). One or 5 days later, the infants were tested for retrieval in the presence of either the same odor, the alternate odor, or no odor. Infants tested with the training odor displayed retention at both intervals; retention was not seen at either interval in the alternate odor or no odor conditions. These data suggest that the odor combines with the mobile to form a compound-stimulus representation of the learned task whose presence after both short (1 day) and long (5 days) intervals is a necessary retrieval cue.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate interlimb coordination in young and older adults with and without a history of falls during the combined task of walking and prehension with different levels of manual task difficulty. Participants walked on a pathway and grasped a dowel. A vector coding technique evaluated coordination patterns. The coordination pattern was not affected by the difficulty level of the manual task. Older adults seemed to prioritize the movement of the right shoulder to grasp the dowel and then ‘froze’ the movement of the other joint (left shoulder) not directly involved in the grasping task. The preference to pick up the dowel in the double support phase and the increase in right shoulder phase made by older adults with a history of falls suggests an even greater decoupling between walking and prehension.  相似文献

Bimanual coordination dynamics in poststroke hemiparetics   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Poststroke hemiparetic individuals (n = 9) and a control group (n = 9) completed a frequency-scaled circle-drawing task in unimanual and bimanual conditions. Measures of intralimb spatial and temporal task accuracy and interlimb coordination parameters were analyzed. Significant reductions in task performance were seen in both limbs of the patients and controls with the introduction of bimanual movement. Spatial performance parameters suggested that the 2 groups focused on different hands during bimanual conditions. In the controls, interlimb coordination variables indicated predictable hand dominance effects, whereas in the patient group, dominance was influenced by the side of impairment and prior handedness of the individual. Therefore, in this particular bimanual task, performance improvements in the hemiplegic side could not be elicited. Intrinsic coupling asymmetries between the hands can be altered by unilateral motor deficits.  相似文献

Interlimb transfer of motor learning, indicating an improvement in performance with one limb following training with the other, often occurs asymmetrically (i.e., from non-dominant to dominant limb or vice versa, but not both). In the present study, we examined whether interlimb transfer of the same motor task could occur asymmetrically and in opposite directions (i.e., from right to left leg vs. left to right leg) depending on individuals’ conception of the task. Two experimental conditions were tested: In a dynamic control condition, the process of learning was facilitated by providing the subjects with a type of information that forced them to focus on dynamic features of a given task (force impulse); and in a spatial control condition, it was done with another type of information that forced them to focus on visuomotor features of the same task (distance). Both conditions employed the same leg extension task. In addition, a fully-crossed transfer paradigm was used in which one group of subjects initially practiced with the right leg and were tested with the left leg for a transfer test, while the other group used the two legs in the opposite order. The results showed that the direction of interlimb transfer varied depending on the condition, such that the right and the left leg benefited from initial training with the opposite leg only in the spatial and the dynamic condition, respectively. Our finding suggests that manipulating the conception of a leg extension task has a substantial influence on the pattern of interlimb transfer in such a way that the direction of transfer can even be opposite depending on whether the task is conceived as a dynamic or spatial control task.  相似文献

The present paper provides a historical note on the evolution of the behavioral study of interlimb coordination and the reasons for its success as a field of investigation in the past decades. Whereas the original foundations for this field of science were laid down back in the seventies, it has steadily grown in the past decades and has attracted the attention of various scientific disciplines. A diversity of topics is currently being addressed and this is also expressed in the present contributions to the special issue. The main theme is centered on the brain basis of interlimb coordination. On the one hand, this pertains to the study of the control and learning of patterns of interlimb coordination in clinical groups. On the other hand, basic neural approaches are being merged together with behavioral approaches to reveal the neural basis of interlimb coordination.  相似文献

This study was designed to (a) verify whether the time available for movement preparation and execution modulates anticipatory postural adjustments/focal movement coordination and (b) determine to what extent the coordination in an anticipation-coincidence (AC) timing task is specific. Ten subjects performed an arm-raising movement from standing position in the reaction time, self-initiated (SI), and AC conditions. In the latter condition, subjects had to synchronize movement initiation or the end of the movement to the passage of a visual mobile on a target. In AC trials, time to contact (TC), which is the time before the mobile reached the target, was varied (720, 1,200, 3,000 ms). Electromyography, kinetic, and kinematics data were collected. Results showed that the coordination patterns were modified by TC, the velocity of the mobile, and the condition in which the movement was executed. It also showed that the behavior in the AC condition came closest to the 1 observed in SI condition when TC increased. These results support the existence of different control modes triggered by the temporal pressure.  相似文献

This study examined the effect of learning a complex bimanual coordination task at different movement frequencies. 30 subjects performed 5:3 polyrhythmic tapping at either high, medium, or low movement frequency on a rhythmic synchronization task and then reproduced the polyrhythmic pattern repeatedly in the spontaneous task. Analysis showed that practice on the synchronization task qualitatively changed correct responses into anticipatory ones. The synchronization learning of the polyrhythm caused the anticipatory responses and so, may involve memorization of serial positions within the polyrhythm. Also, more anticipatory responses were indicated in performance at the medium and low frequencies than at the high frequency on the synchronization task. In addition, deviations of taps from expected tapping positions were observed in performance of the spontaneous task at the high frequency. These results suggest that the movement frequency qualitatively influenced the learning of this bimanual coordination. Especially at the high frequency, frequent shifts to other coordination patterns occurred on the spontaneous task. This means that the performance at higher frequency is more strongly affected by entrainment between the two hands.  相似文献

Numerous developmental issues have been assessed using a mobile reinforcement procedure (leg kicks=operant response, movement of a 3D mobile=reinforcer). The current study addressed issues of stimulus control in the mobile procedure through implementation of computerized measurement of leg kicks and computerized control over auditory/visual reinforcers. Experiment 1 demonstrated that the computerized apparatus provides a sensitive measure of learning and memory. Experiment 2 examined the efficacy of single and multiple modality reinforcement in learning/retention of operant kicking and revealed successful acquisition with single modality reinforcement. These results suggest that the mobile procedure could be expanded to address other types of developmental questions (i.e. perception, cognition, intersensory integration) and could be modified to allow replacement of the 3D mobile with images displayed on a computer monitor, thereby extending the utility of the procedure to studies requiring precise psychophysical control over visual stimuli (i.e. object identification and categorization).  相似文献
