To study implicit concepts of creativity in computer science in the United States and mainland China, we first asked 308 Chinese computer scientists for adjectives that would describe a creative computer scientist. Computer scientists and non‐computer scientists from China (N = 1069) and the United States (N = 971) then rated how well those adjectives described creative computer scientists using a 5‐point Likert Scale. Factor analysis revealed that the concept of a creative computer scientist had four dimensions: (1) smart/effective, (2) outgoing, (3) creative thinking and (4) unsociable. Differences in the implicit concepts across disciplines, ethnicity, gender, age, and working experience were analyzed. We discuss the implications of these findings for our understanding of the domain specificity of creativity.  相似文献

Assessment practice with multicultural populations in the United States requires cultural competence. Culturally competent assessment includes culture-specific styles of service delivery, use of the client's first language, and an evaluation of the client as a cultural being prior to test administration using cultural orientation categories. This information is essential for understanding health/illness beliefs, to indicate the possible presence of culture-specific symptoms, and to select standard or culture-specific tests. Assessment ethics recognize the desirability of alteration or modification of standard tests by translation and development of new norms. Cross-cultural construct validity, response sets, and cultural variables are also research priorities. Culture-specific tests should be constructed and validated for some clients as determined by cultural orientation status. Feedback of test findings to clients and significant others should be consistent with cultural expectations. Professional and societal benefits of cultural competence in assessment are suggested.  相似文献

Following extended training in a visual detection task, functions were determined for individual Ss relating latency of detection responses to number of redundant signal elements embedded in tachistoscopic displays of letters and to distance between signal elements. Latency proved invariant with respect to number of redundant signals and varied non-monotonically with distance. Of the several types of models considered in relation to previous studies, substantial support was forthcoming only for an independent stimulus sampling model. It is suggested that the detection method effects a relatively clear separation of the perceptual from the mnemonic aspects of the standard visual apprehension experiment, and that the sampling process may constitute only the first phase of a more general model which includes both parallel and serial information processing.  相似文献

Based on an analysis of statutes from all 50 states, this research addresses questions regarding the extent and style of antismoking laws. Examination is also made of the nature of public settings where smoking is prohibited. From a theoretical perspective, these aims are guided by several postulates outlined in the sociology of law literature. The prevalence and style of antismoking laws are related to the relative degree of urbanization in each state and to the type of social interaction, personal or impersonal, expected in various settings prohibited to smoking.  相似文献

A partir de données GLOBE Grées de questionnaires administrés à des cadres moyens du Qatar ( N =101) et du Koweit ( N =78) et d'entretiens approfondis auprès de onze cadres moyens du Qatar et dix du Koweit, cette étude analyse les traits du leadership efficace dans les Etats du Golfe. On s'intéresse aussi à la théorie du leadership implicite dans une approche culturelle. Les résultats montrent que le Qatar et le Koweit sont très proches pour ce qui est des profils globaux des leaders efficaces ou exceptionnels. Le leader efficace est compétent sur le plan administratif, diplomate, visionnaire, intègre, centré sur la performance et il suscite des idées. Une analyse factorielle de second ordre confirme la proximité des deux pays pour ce qui est des caractéristiques du leadership efficace. Les variables démographiques ont un impact très faible sur la représentation que les répondants se font du leadership efficace. Cette recherche décrit la double série de valeurs que représentent la tradition et le modernisme dans les deux sociétés.  相似文献

The organizations to which psychologists belonged at the turn of the 20th century were identified. The attributes of the meetings and the membership of those organizations were compared and discussed. In addition to the American Psychological Association, psychologists belonged to the American Philosophical Association and the American Association for the Advancement of Science as well as to local and regional organizations. In addition, some psychologists belonged to the Society of Experimental Psychology, but membership in that organization was by invitation only. The topics presented at the meetings of the psychological and philosophical associations often were identical or very similar, and the clear disciplinary separation that is typical in 2000 was rare in 1900.  相似文献

This article addresses the recent increase in the utilization of women in the United States Army. It traces the history of women in the Army from the turn of the twentieth century to the present and recounts research (both published and unpublished) concerning (1) attitudes toward the use of women in the Army, (2) the impact the changing role of women has had on the Army's ability to perform its mission, and (3) the adjustment of women to the Army. Finally, the author speculates about the future of women in the Army.This article is a revised version of a paper presented at the meeting of the Southwest Regional Conference Inter-University Seminar on Armed Forces and Society, Dallas, April 1978. Counseling psychology (CP) emerged in the US as the result of the convergence of a number of trends in early applied psychology, a number of social factors, as well as changes in the organizational structure of the American Psychological Association. We offer an overview of the history of counseling psychology in the US, focusing on key events that have helped establish and shape the profession. Struggles over the definition of CP as a specialty and its relations with clinical psychology and professional counseling are discussed, as are matters related to the licensing of CP practitioners, and the profession’s relationships with counseling-related professional organizations. The educational and professional preparation of CPs, the profession’s core values that affect both training in and the practice of counseling psychology, and the settings in which CPs work are briefly described. We close with a discussion of several of the challenges facing CP as it is organized and institutionalized in the US.  相似文献

Hispanics recently became the nation's largest minority. By 2050, they will be one third of the population. As their power and influence grows, it is important to have knowledge of their prejudice. There are many studies of prejudice toward Hispanics, largely negative; but little is known about their prejudice toward others. To provide more knowledge of the subject, responses by 758 Hispanics to items about prejudice contained on nationwide surveys were analyzed. Hispanics generally preferred their own kind for marriage and as neighbors. They saw many differences between themselves and Blacks, Asians, Jews, and Whites with respect to intelligence and to being wealthy, hardworking, and prone to violence. Implications and suggestions for future research are discussed.  相似文献

This study compared different forms of body talk, including ??fat talk,?? among 231 university men and women in central England (UK; n?=?93) and the southeastern United States (US; n?=?138). A 2 (gender) by 2 (country) repeated measures ANOVA across types of body talk (negative, self-accepting, positive) and additional Chi-square analyses revealed that there were differences across gender and between the UK and US cultures. Specifically, UK and US women were more likely to report frequently hearing or perceiving pressure to engage in fat talk than men. US women and men were also more likely to report pressure to join in self-accepting body talk than UK women and men.  相似文献
