An Experimental Study of “affective conflict”

Factor analysis of acceptability ratings given to 10 contraceptive methods by 178 Ss (78 male, 100 female) identified four groupings: (a) coitusdependent—condom, diaphragm, and foam or jelly; (b) surgical—vasectomy and tubal ligation; (c) coitus-inhibiting—abstinence, rhythm, and withdrawal; and (d) coitus-independent—intrauterine device and pill. Factor scores were computed and correlated with variables from the Adjective Check List, California F Scale, California Psychological Inventory, College Vocabulary Test, Miller-Fisk Sexual Knowledge Questionnaire, and Rotter's locus-of-control scale. Although the yield of significant correlations was modest, several heuristic patterns of covariation with the personality and cognitive measures were noted.     

From tarasoff to hopper: The evolution of the therapist's duty to protect third parties

The duty of therapists to protect third parties has gained national attention following the analyses of the California Supreme Court in Tarasoff v. Regents of the University of California in 1974 and in 1976. The assassination attempt by John Hinckley, Jr., has spawned yet another “duty to protect” case (Hopper v. Brady). Utilizing the issues involved in Hopper, this paper discusses the psychotherapists' duty to protect from harm the patients' potential victims. Following an analysis of Hopper, Tarasoff is extensively reviewed. The evolution of Tarasoff within California and other jurisdictions is traced. Finally, an appraisal of the current status of the therapists' duty to protect as applied to Hopper and future cases is presented.

In the wake of the Tarasoff case in California other state courts have interpreted the legality of a helping professional's duty to warn.

New Journals of Psychology

Creativity, personality assessment and social attitudes are the three primary interests listed by Ronald Taft in the International Directory of Psychologists. He took his Ph.D. at the University of Berkeley, California, USA and is now at the University of Melbourne, Australia. He is also Consulting Editor of Australian Journal of Psychology. The International Platform asked him to review the new journal of psychology, Psychology Today which has become quite a sales success.     

Perceptions of liability for the negligent infliction of emotional distress to a bystander

This study examines factors that are part of the test for whether a plaintiff may recover damages due to the negligent infliction of emotional distress to a bystander. Subjects were 96 eligible jurors from two California counties. They were presented with a case vignette which carried one of the three elements for bystander recovery for emotional distress as outlined in the California case of Dillon v. Legg. Participants were more likely to believe a plaintiff had a right to sue for damages in cases in which (1) there is a close relationship between the bystander and a direct victim, and (2) the bystander is within the zone of physical danger. A plaintiff's sensory and contemporaneous perception of an accident did not significantly influence subjects' judgements.     

Inundating the School Board with Support for Counselors: An Eleventh Hour Strategy for Saving an Endangered Species

Counselors in the Santa Barbara (California) High School District recently faced the threat of abolishment of all counseling positions. This article describes how a guidance task force, consisting of counselors and teachers, sought and obtained community and professional support needed to defeat the proposed staff realignment plan.

A Retrospective Examination of Child Protection Involvement Among Young Adults Accessing Homelessness Services

Childhood maltreatment is associated with a variety of young adult adversities including homelessness. This study used linked administrative records to develop a population‐level, epidemiological characterization of the child protection histories of young adults accessing homelessness services. The records of all 17‐ to 24‐year‐olds receiving homeless services between 2011 and 2014 in San Francisco County, California (n = 2241) were probabilistically linked to statewide child protective service (CPS) records. Findings document that 50.0% of young adults had been reported for maltreatment at least once during childhood, yet the prevalence of past CPS involvement varied across demographic and child welfare characteristics. Homeless female youth were significantly more likely to have a CPS history than male youth (58.1% vs. 41.5%). Nearly twice as many Black clients accessing homelessness services had a CPS history as did White clients (59.8% vs. 31.8%). Roughly half (47.3%) of those with a childhood history of reported maltreatment had been last reported for maltreatment in another California county. Targeting services that address past trauma and instability among homeless young adults may be justified given the prevalence of CPS history in this population.     

Queering Buddhism or Buddhist De-Queering?

Abstract

This article examines how multiple axes of difference — race, ethnicity, class, gender, and sexuality — operate in the religious/spiritual lives of western convert LGBTQI Buddhists. Through an ethnographic study of a diverse LGBTQI Buddhist group in Oakland, California, it will reflect on emerging differences between western convert Buddhist LGBTQI practitioners. In particular, it examines how distinct populations of LGBTQI practitioners utilize the non-essentialist philosophy of Buddhism, showing how it can operate both conservatively as a way to reinforce heteronormativity and subversively as a way to challenge heteronormativity.

Media representations of majority and minority groups

This research series replicated and extended earlier findings of Gardikiotis, Martin, and Hewstone ( 2004 ), who examined via content analysis UK media representations of numeric majority and minority groups. Using news articles from North and South Dakota, where majority/minority population characteristics mirror those of the UK in terms of number and power, Study 1 replicated the patterns of results found in Gardikiotis et al. Study 2, in which articles from California newspapers were analyzed, yielded findings contrary to Gardikiotis et al. and our Dakota analyses: Minority headlines were more frequent in California, and majority articles were longer than minority articles. Consistent with UK and Dakotas findings, majority headlines in California were associated with politics and identity adjectives, whereas minority headlines were linked to social issues and ethnicity‐based adjectives. Arguably, these differences occurred because in California, unlike the UK and the Dakotas, Whites are not simultaneously the social power and the numeric majority. Variations in power and number associated with majority and minority status were discussed in explaining differences across contexts, and in signaling possible shortcomings in the conceptualization and methods used to investigate minority and majority influence. Notes toward “a user's guide to the quantum connection”

Nick Herbert is an experimental physicist living in California whose recent book, Quantum Reality: Beyoad the New Pbysics, has been highly regarded as a lucid introduction to the many alternative interpretations of quantum mechanics that are currently being debated among professional physicists. In this playful article, he treads the fine line between science, fact, and fantasy to give us a metaphorical glimpse into some future possibilities about quantum dynamics in everyday life.

Dr. Herbert will be a speaker and panelist at our upcoming Fall 1988 conference on “Cod, Consciousness, and the New Quantum Psychologies” where he will present his most recent views on the reconstruction of a physics that includes consciousness and observer-created realities on many levels.     

A Validation of a Multicultural Competency Measure Among South Korean Counselors

The authors translated the California Brief Multicultural Competence Scale (CBMCS; Gamst et al., 2004), a measure of multicultural competence, into Korean for cross-cultural validation. An exploratory factor analysis followed by a confirmatory factor analysis on a sample of Korean counselors (N = 365) supported a 3-factor model: Multicultural Ability, Multicultural Knowledge, and Multicultural Awareness. The Korean version was deemed to possess sound psychometric properties, such as high test-retest reliability and criterion-related validity. Los autores tradujeron al idioma coreano la Escala Breve de Competencia Multicultural de California (CBMCS, por sus siglas en inglés; Gamst et al., 2004), un instrumento de medida de competencia multicultural, para su validación intercultural. Un análisis factorial exploratorio seguido de un análisis factorial confirmatorio sobre una muestra de consejeros coreanos (N = 365) respaldó un modelo de 3 factores: Habilidad Multicultural, Conocimiento Multicultural y Conciencia Multicultural. Se concluyó que la versión en coreano tenía propiedades psicométricas sólidas, como una alta fiabilidad de la repetición de las pruebas y una alta validez de criterio.     

Authoritarianism,Knowledge of AIDS,and Affect Toward Persons with AIDS: Implications for Health Education1

Four hundred sixteen undergraduate university students were asked to indicate their knowledge of AIDS and affect toward persons with AIDS and to take the California F-scale (Adorno, Frenkel-Brunswik, Levinson, & Sanford, 1950, 1982). Results indicated a significant relationship between authoritarianism and affect toward persons with AIDS, r= .31 (p < .01). Knowledge of AIDS was very slightly related to affect toward persons with AIDS, but it did not moderate the relationship between authoritarianism and affect toward persons with AIDS. The findings are interpreted as having possible implications for health education.
