This study utilizes data from the National Survey of American Life to examine the sociodemographic and denominational correlates
of religious involvement and spirituality among older African Americans and Black Caribbeans. Eleven measures of non-organizational
religious participation, subjective religiosity, and spirituality are utilized. The findings indicate significant gender,
income, region, marital status, denominational, and immigration status differences in religiosity and spirituality. Among
older Black Caribbeans, income was a consistent correlate of religious participation and spirituality. The findings are discussed
in relation to prior work in the area of religious involvement among older adults. 相似文献

Most quality of life (QOL) assessments measure patients’ emotional well-being, functional well-being, interpersonal/social well-being, and satisfaction with treatment. Little attention has been given to patients’ spirituality or religiosity. Further, studies that have examined the impact of spirituality or religiosity on QOL have not differentiated between the constructs. The purpose of this study was to examine religiosity and spirituality as separate variables, and to define their relationship to QOL for 61 persons with cancer. Regression analyses indicated that, while spirituality and religiosity are moderately intercorrelated, spirituality has a stronger relationship with QOL than religiosity. When attempting to understand a person's spiritual life and its impact on QOL, there is a need for clear distinction between and separate assessment of spirituality and religiosity. 相似文献

The use of religious/spiritual resources may increase when dealing with the stress of a cancer diagnosis. However, there has
been very little research conducted into changes in religious/spiritual beliefs and practices as a result of a cancer diagnosis
outside the USA. The aim of this study was to examine the impact of a breast cancer diagnosis on patients’ religious/spiritual
beliefs and practices in the UK where religious practice is different. The study used two methods. One compared the religious/spiritual
beliefs and practices of 202 patients newly diagnosed with breast cancer with those of a control group of healthy women (n = 110). The other examined patients’ perceived change in religious/spiritual beliefs and practices at the time of surgery
with those in the year prior to surgery. The aspects of religiousness/spirituality assessed were: levels of religiosity/spirituality,
strength of faith, belief in God as well as private and public practices. Patient’s perceived their belief in God, strength
of faith and private religious/spiritual practices to have significantly increased shortly after surgery compared with the
year prior to surgery. However, there were no significant differences in religious/spiritual beliefs and practices between
patients and healthy participants. Change scores demonstrated both a reduction and an increase in religious/spiritual beliefs
and practices. Although belief in God, strength of faith and private religious/spiritual practices were perceived by patients
to be significantly higher after their cancer diagnosis, no significant differences in religious/spiritual beliefs and practices
were found between the cancer group at the time of surgery and the control group. Different methodologies appear to produce
different results and may explain contradictions in past US studies. Limitations of this study are discussed and suggestions
for future research are made. 相似文献

Patterns and correlates of self-perceptions of spirituality and subjective religiosity are examined using data from the National Survey of American Life, a nationally representative study of African Americans, Caribbean Blacks and non-Hispanic Whites. Demographic and denominational correlates of patterns of subjective religiosity and spirituality (i.e., religious only, spiritual only, both religious/spiritual and neither religious/spiritual) are examined. In addition, the study of African Americans and Caribbean Blacks permits the investigation of possible ethnic variation in the meaning and conceptual significance of these constructs within the U.S. Black population. African Americans and Caribbean Blacks are more likely than Non-Hispanic Whites to indicate that they are "both religious and spiritual" and less likely to indicate that they are "spiritual only" or "neither spiritual nor religious." Demographic and denominational differences in the patterns of spirituality and subjective religiosity are also indicated. Study findings are discussed in relation to prior research in this field and noted conceptual and methodological issues deserving further study. 相似文献

The literature on risk perception in women from high-risk breast cancer families reveals persistent over-estimation of risk, even after counseling. In this study, a communication aid was designed to facilitate discussion of risk between clinical geneticists and genetic counselors and women from this high-risk population. Method: Stage 1. The aid was developed by an expert panel of clinical geneticists, genetic counselors, psychologists, an epidemiologist, an oncologist, linguists and a consumer. It was guided by the international literature on risk communication and a large multi-centre Australian study of risk communication. The 13 page full-color communication aid used varying formats of words, numbers, graphs and pie-charts to address (a) the woman’s subjective risk; (b) the population risk of breast cancer; c) the risk of inherited breast cancer; (d) the cumulative risk for women with BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations; (e) family risk factors; (f) the woman’s suitability for genetic testing; (h) screening and management recommendations, and (i) a re-assessment of the woman’s subjective risk. Stage 2: A before–after pilot study of 38 women who were unaffected with breast cancer and were attending four Australian familial cancer clinics was undertaken. Baseline and follow-up questionnaires were completed by 27 women. Outcomes were compared to those observed in 107 similar women undergoing genetic counseling without the communication aid in 2001. Results: The risk communication aid appears to be beneficial; breast cancer genetics knowledge improved in some areas and importantly, risk perceptions improved in the cohort receiving the communication aid. Psychological measures showed no difference in anxiety or depression between the group receiving the communication aid and the comparison cohort. Women and clinicians were very positive about the usefulness of the communication aid as an adjunct to the genetic counseling consultation. 相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine the influence of spirituality, religiosity, and religious coping on quality of
life and self-efficacy among couples following a first time cardiac event. There was no significant association between measures
for spirituality and religiosity and couples’ ratings for quality of life and self-efficacy. Negative forms of religious coping
were associated with lower levels of quality of life and decreased confidence in the patient’s ability to perform physical
tasks. Spouses’ measures for quality of life, self-efficacy, spirituality, religiosity, and religious coping were associated
with patients’ measures for the same study variables.

Given the complex array of emotional and medical issues that may arise when making a decision about amniocentesis, women may
find that their spiritual and/or religious beliefs can comfort and assist their decision-making process. Prior research has
suggested that Latinas’ spiritual and/or religious beliefs directly influence their amniocentesis decision. A more intimate
look into whether Latinas utilize their beliefs during amniocentesis decision-making may provide an opportunity to better
understand their experience. The overall goal of this study was to describe the role structured religion and spirituality
plays in Latinas’ daily lives and to evaluate how religiosity and spirituality influences health care decisions, specifically
in prenatal diagnosis. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with eleven women who were invited to describe their religious
beliefs and thoughts while considering the option of amniocentesis. All participants acknowledged the influence of religious
and/or spiritual beliefs in their everyday lives. Although the women sought comfort and found validation in their beliefs
and in their faith in God’s will during their amniocentesis decision-making process, results suggest the risk of procedure-related
complications played more of a concrete role than their beliefs. 相似文献

To understand the culture of rural African–American women who use cocaine, ethnographic research was conducted in rural North Central Florida using in-depth interviews and participant observations with 30 respondents. Fourteen major themes emerged from the data; however, this paper focuses on one theme, that of religion. Nine sub-themes about religion and spirituality emerged. Religion was viewed as a personal relationship with God, which is not dependent on socializing with other church members, but was helpful in sustaining the respondents. While religiosity was a stable and consistent place in the respondents’ lives and some relied on their faith in God to replace their addiction, faith was not uniformly utilized by all respondents in this manner. Religiosity among African–American women who use cocaine cannot solely overcome the lack of drug treatment or treatment options and the stigma associated with drug use although it maybe a resiliency factor, which warrant promoting.Dr. Emma J. Drawing on a qualitative study based on in-depth interviews with 30 rural and urban Australian women, we analyze their experiences
of a hysterectomy for conditions other than cancer. Women were recruited via advertisements in community newspapers and the
network sampling technique. The study aimed to identify the personal, social and medical factors that influenced their decision
to undergo surgery and on their understandings of self following this procedure. Three common themes emerged: a negative response
to a hysterectomy, ambivalence about it and a perceiving it as having a positive impact on the woman’s self. The latter pattern
predominated, indicating that contrary to the medical rhetoric, women’s own accounts are different and relevant when counseling
women about a hysterectomy. 相似文献

There are several lines of evidence that suggest religiosity and spirituality are protective factors for both physical and
mental health, but the association with obesity is less clear. This study examined the associations between dimensions of
religiosity and spirituality (religious attendance, daily spirituality, and private prayer), health behaviors and weight among
African Americans in central Mississippi. Jackson Heart Study participants with complete data on religious attendance, private
prayer, daily spirituality, caloric intake, physical activity, depression, and social support (n = 2,378) were included. Height, weight, and waist circumference were measured. We observed no significant association between
religiosity, spirituality, and weight. The relationship between religiosity/spirituality and obesity was not moderated by
demographic variables, psychosocial variables, or health behaviors. However, greater religiosity and spirituality were related
to lower energy intake, less alcohol use, and less likelihood of lifetime smoking. Although religious participation and spirituality
were not cross-sectionally related to weight among African Americans, religiosity and spirituality might promote certain health
behaviors. The association between religion and spirituality and weight gain deserves further investigation in studies with
a longitudinal study design. 相似文献

Generativity investigations have explored the manner by which adults derive meaning and fulfillment from their life activities
(e.g., Erikson in Identity, youth, and crisis W.W. Norton & Company Inc.,NY, 1968; McAdams and Logan in American Psychological Association, 15–31, 2004). Faith and religious practice have often been central features of adult meaning making, yet the relationship between one’s
spiritual identity and one’s generative concern or activities has received only limited investigation. Lesser still has been
investigated examining the degree to which young adults demonstrate generative concern. The current study examined the relationship
between aspects of faith (religiosity and spirituality) and generativity (concern and action). A sample of 94 undergraduates
from a religiously affiliated college were recruited through door-to-door invitation and were surveyed using a new measure
of religiosity (Steger and Frazier in Journal of Counseling Psychology 52(4):574–582, 2005) and two measures of generativity (Loyola Generativity Scale and Generative Behavior Checklist, McAdams et al. 1992). Support
was found for a relationship between spirituality and generative concern. These findings are discussed in relation to recent
demographic shifts and are compared with earlier work investigating secular spiritual trends on generativity (e.g., Dillon
and Wink in The generative society American Psychological Association Press, Washington, DC, 153–174, 2004). 相似文献

Hope has many facets to it in the context of cancer. This article outlines an instrumental case study for a patient with aggressive
lymphoma who rapidly deteriorated to the point of dying. How her and her family’s hope was managed is outlined here from various
perspectives. Interviews were carried out with the patient’s family, medical consultant-in-charge (attending physician) and
nurses caring for her at the end of life. The findings outline the transition from hope for cure to hope for a good death
and the role that the patient and family’s Christian hope played in this. Religiosity and spirituality of hope in terms of
Christian hope is explored from the theological perspective. Practical aspects of care in the face of changing hope are discussed.
Conclusions are drawn about reframing hope in a changing clinical situation with reference to theories of hope. The importance
of acknowledging hope, coping, spirituality and religiosity, especially at end of life, is emphasised. 相似文献

To explore similarities and differences between religiosity and spirituality, the authors used several measures of religiosity and spirituality to examine the level of their association in 171 African American college students. Results support the multidimensionality of both constructs. An intrinsic religious orientation accounted for most of the variance in each type of spirituality; conversely. 1 type of extrinsic religious orientation accounted for almost none. The authors also found no significant differences between men's and women's scores on any of the religiosity and spirituality measures. The authors discuss implications for addressing religion and spirituality with African American clients. 相似文献

Some theories have posited that African American youth are academic underachievers because of sociocultural factors. We label
this point of view the cultural incompatibility perspective. Ogbu’s oppositional culture theory and Steele’s stereotype threat
theory are selected as popular examples of this viewpoint. A critical review of the literature on these particular theories
was conducted. It was concluded that there is limited empirical support for the cultural incompatibility perspective on African
American academic achievement. This raises questions about the focus on academic underachievement among African Americans
versus high achievement among other ethnic/racial groups. Implications of the empirical findings on the incompatibility perspective
for the role of African American culture in Black student achievement are discussed. 相似文献

Previous research suggests that many men increase their religious involvement after the birth of a new child. Using data on
low-income urban fathers from the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study (FFCW), this study extends this research by examining
whether fathers maintain a higher rate of religious participation as children get older and how fathers’ religiosity may influence
children’s behavior. Results suggest that although many urban fathers slightly increase their religious involvement after
the birth of a child, most fathers attend religious services at a fairly consistent rate during the early years of their child’s
life. Although there is only limited evidence suggesting that fathers’ religious involvement directly influences children’s
behavior, there is evidence that fathers’ religiosity moderates the influence of other family characteristics on children;
parental relationship quality and mothers’ religiosity are associated with fewer problem behaviors among children when fathers
believe that religion is important to family life. Results also suggest that having a Black Protestant father is associated
with fewer externalizing problem behaviors among young children. Overall, this study suggests that religion may be a source
of support that encourages urban fathers to be engaged in their family life and promote positive development among children. 相似文献

Many Filipinos have a powerful adherence to Catholicism. However, little is known about spirituality and religious involvement of Filipina Americans who have been diagnosed with breast cancer. Ten (n = 10) in-depth qualitative interviews with Filipina immigrant breast cancer survivors identified prayer to be the most common religious practice, followed by prayers by others and spiritual support from the Catholic Church. These findings can help clinicians and researchers understand the role of spirituality and religion in providing comfort and support for Filipina immigrant breast cancer patient as they face the stress of diagnosis and treatment. 相似文献

Guided by Atchley’s Continuity Theory of the Spiritual Self as presented in Aging, spirituality, and religion, Fortress Press, Minneapolis, MN (1995), this study tested the validity of two dimensions of religiosity and one dimension of spirituality. It then examined the
extent to which each dimension of religiosity influenced having spiritual experiences for 221 chronically ill older adults.
Mean age of the sample was 80 years. Structural equation modeling was used to test a conceptual model. Substantive findings
were that private religiosity (prayer and coping), but not public religiosity (participation and other church involvement)
may influence reporting spiritual experiences by the older adults in the study. Findings revealed a good model fit to the
data and strong factor loadings revealed sound construct validity for the latent variables (i.e., public and private religiosities,
and experiential spirituality) in the model. 相似文献
