In Practice for That Moment

The political or cultural circumstances of the individual are an integral part of the self. Every circumstance in life is an attempt at a conversation between the politics of society and the politics of the individual immersed in the society. This conversation is lost to the protagonists most of the time. We need events strong enough to force us into reflection. In this personal article, I review my response to the surgical separation in 2002 of Maria Teresa and Maria de Jesús Quiej Alvarez, craniopagus sisters born in Guatemala. The article sketches the history of the relations between the United States and Guatemala, mentions the health care disparity, and describes the circumstances that determine who can come to this country for treatment. The painting Glorious Victory by Diego Rivera and three personal photographs are the scaffolding upon which the reflections are built. A line from the poem “South,” by Lucien Stryk, is the title of this article, implying that there is always going to be another opportunity for opening the dialogue between the self and circumstances.

In Search of Bandhood: Consultation with Original Music Groups

Original music groups present a unique and under-explored example of self-initiated task groups. The intragroup life and negotiation of creative differences in three diverse original music groups from New York City were explored. Establishment of a shared group ideology and management of organizational tensions, identified in Murnighan and Conlon's study of professional string quartets, appeared central in the bands' cohesion. The role of group therapist, as a band consultant, was examined.     

The Present Moment in the Primary Triangle

ABSTRACT

Daniel Stern described the present moment as “what happens here, now, between us” (BCPSG, 2010, p. 41). Stern considered the present moment as the basic unit of intersubjective communication or the sharing of inner states for both mother-infant pairs and therapist-patient dyads. He emphasized the importance of implicit processes for fostering change in relationships. Evidence collected during the last three decades in the Lausanne Centre for Family Studies points to a parallel, but collective form of intersubjective communication in the family that originates in infancy, thanks to the previously unknown competence of the young infant for multipartite interaction and sharing inner states with others. Collective intersubjectivity opens up new avenues for the understanding of development and change in the family, as well as for family therapy. These results are illustrated in several case vignettes and discussed in reports of conversations with Daniel Stern.     

In dialogue with Daniel Stern: A review and discussion of The Present Moment in Psychotherapy and Everyday Life

Abstract

Daniel Stern's concepts of “present moment” and “now moment,” with impending kairos, are described. In the latter, the patient demands the authentic presence of the analyst. If the analyst can open himself to the patient, he proposes that this will result in more profound changes in the patient's implicit knowing than verbal interpretations in the narrative domain would lead to. The value of intersubjectively relating and dwelling more in the phenomenal than in the narrative dimension is highlighted. A similarity to the works of the existential psychoanalyst Harold Kelman is shown. The author agrees with, but also problematises, a tendency to favour the implicit, devaluing verbal understanding and interpretation, which may result in the patient not seeing the primitive levels in his inner life. For this purpose, works from D. W. Winnicott, Jessica Benjamin and Christopher Bollas, as well as others, are used. The author concludes that object relations and intersubjective theory need to complement each other that further, there is a need to give words to the middle-ground between the phenomenal and narrative dimensions.     

The Meaning of Black Music

Donald Byrd is an internationally acclaimed jazz musician and has recorded over twenty albums. In this article he clearly states that Black music is an expression of the Black experience or the reality of Black life. Counseling, a process that engages the experience of the person(s) counseled, ignores an important expressive outlet Blacks have used in their struggle for survival. Dr. Byrd's article also outlines the dimensions of the Black aesthetic inherent in Black music. Black music is a manifestation of Black people, and if counselors are to understand Black people and facilitate their growth, they must listen to and understand the love, hurt, joy, despair, loneliness, pride, anger, and consciousness in Black music.

黄兴涛著《重塑中华——近代中国"中华民族"观念研究》涉及中国现代国家最核心的概念,出版后引起了甚大反响。如果说费孝通"中华民族多元一体化"理论阐明了中华民族作为"自在实体"的古代历史的话,黄兴涛的著作则揭示了中华民族作为"自觉实体"的近代历史。本文围绕该书"中华民族"概念,从概念史角度分别考察中华民族概念的标准化、大众化、政治化过程,指出1902年、1912年和1932年是"中华民族"成为自觉实体的现代时刻,而这一现代时刻直到《重塑中华》的出版才第一次清晰地呈现在读者面前。     

The Aha! Moment: The Cognitive Neuroscience of Insight

ABSTRACT— A sudden comprehension that solves a problem, reinterprets a situation, explains a joke, or resolves an ambiguous percept is called an insight (i.e., the " Aha! moment"). Psychologists have studied insight using behavioral methods for nearly a century. Recently, the tools of cognitive neuroscience have been applied to this phenomenon. A series of studies have used electroencephalography (EEG) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to study the neural correlates of the " Aha! moment" and its antecedents. Although the experience of insight is sudden and can seem disconnected from the immediately preceding thought, these studies show that insight is the culmination of a series of brain states and processes operating at different time scales. Elucidation of these precursors suggests interventional opportunities for the facilitation of insight.     

The Harmonium in Sikh Music

The harmonium has become the standard instrument in all Sikh musical worship (kirtan) performances and it seems inseparable from the Sikh musical experience. In the mid-nineteenth century, however, the kirtan experience was considerably different. Until the early twentieth century, kirtanis performed kirtan on stringed instruments and adhered to a number of complex traditional musical themes and structures. Following the introduction of the harmonium, kirtanis became attracted to this instrument and in the space of 50 or 60 years, the harmonium became their instrument of choice. This paper explores this theme and attempts to deconstruct the history of the harmonium and the reasons why it became so attractive as an instrument of choice for Sikh kirtanis. We explore the popularity of the harmonium amongst Indian musicians in general before attempting to understand why Sikh kirtanis rejected stringed instruments and chose the harmonium.     

The Moment of a Star: The Ethics of Narration

The main theme of the following presentation of Ric?ur's philosophical preoccupations with religion is the interrelationship between reflection and revelation. In a first section, Ric?ur's philosophical profile is outlined in order to indicate the tone between sadness and joy, negativity and affirmation, in which religion has its existential and philosophical ambience. The following part discusses the pertinence of Ric?ur's position in light of contemporary debates about divine otherness and kenosis. Finally, a third section examines the antagonism between philosophy of reflection and biblical revelation, which marks the range and limits of Ric?ur's hermeneutic philosophy. The kind of dependency or heteronomy implied in religion, especially in the biblical idea of the absolute as an external truth-event, presents a genuine challenge to both phenomenology and hermeneutics. This problem is addressed in Ric?ur's theories of revelation and testimony.
