A series of experiments was conducted to determine the effects of method of threshold measurement on the amount of threshold shift produced by a masking stimulus. The amount of contralateral tactile masking of the fingertip was found to be much greater when thresholds were measured by the Békésy tracking method than when measured by a forced-choice method. When the Békésy tracking procedure was modified so that each observation interval containing a brief stimulus was followed almost immediately by a second observation interval not containing a stimulus, the amount of masking was substantially reduced for both contralateral tactile masking and auditorytactile masking and corresponded almost exactly with the amount of masking measured by the forced-choice method. No such reduction in the amount of masking was obtained by using this procedure to measure ipsilateral tactile masking or auditory masking.  相似文献

Vibrotactile difference thresholds for intensity were measured at several intensity levels of a test stimulus in the absence of a masking vibration and in the presence of three different amplitudes of a masking vibration. The test stimulus was a 160-Hz vibration delivered to the right index finger. The masking stimulus was a 160-Hz vibration delivered to the right little finger. For the same amplitudes of the test stimulus, △I varied as a direct function of the amplitude of the masking vibration. The smallest △Is resulted from measurements made in the absence of the masking stimulus. The Weber fraction, △I/I, was constant only for the more intense test stimuli in the absence of any masking stimuli. Independent of the presence or level of the masker, the Weber fraction for all stimuli approached approximately the same value, .25, when the test stimuli were raised to 20-dB sensation level. A model is proposed to account for the increase in the Weber fraction as a function of masker intensity and to predict masked thresholds.  相似文献

Visual masking effects on test flash thresholds were measured under real and simulated eye movement conditions to determine whether visual masking is primarily responsible for elevations in threshold that are sometimes associated with saccadic eye movements. Brief luminous flashes presented to the central retina before, during, and after saccades were masked by stimuli presented either pre- or postsaccadically. The amount and time course of masking were quantitatively dependent on stimulus parameters of intensity and temporal separation and were unaffected by eye movement parameters (amplitude, velocity, direction) as long as retinal stimulus conditions were constant. The duration of forward masking was longer than that of backward masking. When retinal conditions during saccades were mimicked while the eyes were held steady, masking interactions were identical to those obtained during real saccades. These results indicate that masking effects during saccades in ordinary environments are determined solely by the stimulus situation at the retina. Putative nonvisual, centrally originating saccadic suppression suggested by other authors is evidently not additive with visually determined masking during saccades.  相似文献

The perception of briefly exposed visual forms is shown to be masked by an after- coming random pattern stimulus of approximately equal intensity. This effect occurs only under certain well defined conditions; it is limited by the minimum stimulus exposure time in excess of threshold which overcomes masking (critical stimulus duration) as well as by the minimum interval between presentation of the two stimuli which permits evasion of the masking action (critical interval). Over the range of stimulus duration in which masking occurs, critical interval varied with stimulus duration in such a way that the interval multiplied by the stimulus duration equals a constant. Critical stimulus duration and critical interval at threshold are shown to vary little under a variety of conditions. The effect of the random pattern stimulus is limited to the part of the visual field to which it is presented.  相似文献

The detection threshold of a brief test stimulus was measured as a function of the onset asynchrony between it and a long-lasting suprathreshold masking stimulus. Both stimuli were sine-wave gratings of the same vertical orientation and in the peak-subtract phase but differed in spatial frequency by a factor of 3. The temporal masking functions obtained with 2- and 6-cycles/deg maskers of high contrast exhibited transient on- and off-peaks of masking and a sustained effect during the masker exposure. An 18-cycles/deg masker caused sustained masking only. Experiments with maskers of variable spatial frequency and contrast showed that, in the low-spatial-frequency range, the mechanism responsible for the transient effect was more sensitive than that generating the sustained effect, while the sustained effect required less contrast in the high-spatial-frequency range. The results are considered as evidence, in addition to previous findings, for the sustained/transient dichotomy in the temporal domain.  相似文献

In sequences of identical auditory stimuli, infrequent deviant stimuli elicit an event-related brain potential component called mismatch negativity (MMN). MMN is presumed to reflect the existence of a memory trace of the frequent stimulus at the moment of presentation of the infrequent stimulus. This hypothesis was tested by applying the recognition-masking paradigm of cognitive psychology. In this paradigm, a masking sound presented shortly before or after a test stimulus diminishes the recognition memory of this stimulus, the more so the shorter the interval between the test and masking stimuli. This interval was varied in the present study. It was found that the MMN amplitude strongly correlated with the subject’s ability to discriminate between frequent and infrequent stimuli. This result strongly suggests that MMN providesa measure for a trace of sensory memory, and further, that with MMN, this memory can be studied without performance-related distortions.  相似文献

Selective adaptation was used to explore the characterisitcs of a metacontrast masking stimulus which contribute to its effectiveness in masking the test stimulus. Subjects adapted for 10 s to a configuration like the masking stimulus that was either continuously on or flickering. Following this they viewed a metacontrast presentation and estimated the brightness of the test stimulus. Prior adaptation to a continuously present stimulus did not appreciably affect metacontrast masking; however, masking was greatly reduced following adaptation to flickering stimuli. These results are consistent with recent models of metacontrast masking based on transient and sustained visual channels.  相似文献

An attempt was made to obtain U-shaped masking functions in two metacontrast experiments. Trained Ss judged whether a square test stimulus (TS) was bright or dim. The TS was presented alone or in conjunction with an adjacent pair of square masking stimuli (MS) whose energy equaled the bright TS. The stimulus onset asynchronies (SOA) rangedfrom 0 to 125 msec. The task minimized the role of apparent movement cues as a reliable basis for judgrnent. Similar studies have employed TS plus MS vs MS alone as the alternatives, allowing apparent movement to be a cue. Brightness accuracy was a U-shaped function of SOA. This finding is consistent with neural-net models (Weisstein, 1968). However, analysis of Ss’ response bias suggested an alternative explanation involving the MS as a comparison stimulus at short SOA. It was concluded that U-shaped masking functions are also consistent with theories based upon independent component processes, e.g., Schurman and Eriksen (1970) and Uttal (1970).  相似文献

Taking into account the studies about the measure of sensitivity in magnitude estimation tasks, we analyze the three most common measures used in this topic: Pearson's product-moment correlation between the logarithm of the stimulus and the logarithm of the response (R), the exponent of Stevens' power function (K), and the measure "M" proposed by Garriga-Trillo. Using a sample of participants greater than usual in psychophysical studies (180 participants), we designed an experiment with two sets of stimuli with different stimulus ranges. In each of these sets, we used two kinds of stimuli (line segments and squares). Our conclusions were: (1) we rejected the use of K as a sensitivity measure because the results provided by this index were the opposite of those expected when we compared the two stimulus ranges. (2) We also rejected the use of M because this measure is a linear transformation of Kendall's coefficient of concordance. (3) Lastly, we suggest the mathematical transformation proposed by Fisher to achieve a normal distribution, and recommend this transformation as the best sensitivity measure.  相似文献

Masking of the perception of an electrical test stimulus by a mechanical shock was studied in six Ss. Forward and backward masking were observed in all Ss, the former being of longer duration. Duration of the masking effects is inversely related to the intensity of the test stimulus. Masking effects may be preceded and followed by perceptual facilitation. The masking effects may be responsible for the alterations in the perception of a somaesthetic stimulus before and during movement of the stimulated area.  相似文献

Using a brightness-discrimination task similar to that employed by Bernstein, Proctor, Proctor, and Schurman (1973), masking functions were obtained in two experiments. In Experiment I, test stimulus (TS) and mask stimulus (MS) energies were held constant but luminance and duration were varied reciprocally. The obtained masking functions, plotted as a function of stimulus onset asynchrony (SOA), were of an essentially identical U shape. This suggests that (a) SOA is a more suitable measure of delay than interstimulus interval, and (b) Bloch’s law holds for the requisite discrimination. In Experiment II, TS luminance and MS luminance were varied independently. This was to see whether the MS served as a frame of reference at short SOA, as suggested previously (Bernstein et al, 1973). The results were that this was, in fact, the case and that the transition from comparative to absolute judgment strategies as SOA increases is a major contributor to U-shaped masking functions.  相似文献

Two experiments measured the apparent orientation (aftereffect) and the threshold for detection (masking) of a colored grating viewed by one eye after exposure to a colored grating to the same or the opposite eye (monoptic inspection) or after stimulation of one eye by color and the other eye by contours (dichoptic inspection). Under the monoptic condition, the color relationship between the inspection and test stimuli exerted control over the extent of aftereffect and masking when the two stimuli were viewed with the same eye, but not when they were seen with different eyes. Aftereffect and masking were nonselective to wavelength following dichoptic inspection, irrespective of whether the test stimulus was presented to the color-adapted or to the contour-adapted eye. The results support other claims that visual detectors with chromatic and spatial tuning have monocular specificity.  相似文献

The relationship between the logarithm of pain threshold latency (sec) and the logarithm of the stimulus intensity (mcal/cm2/sec) has been shown to be linear, and the extrapolated x-intercept value of the linear equation could be a useful measure in pain research. In order to assess the reliability of the x-intercept, pain latency thresholds, were obtained from 23 Ss by utilizing the D’Amour-Smith modification of the dolorimetric technique and by testing under a variety of conditions at each of four stimulus intensities. The empirically determined log t (sec) values were shown to be slightly, but significantly, higher when stimulation was applied to either the dominant limb or to the legs rather than to the nondominant limb or to the arms. The computed slope and x-intercept values did not differ between limbs or between dominant and nondominant sides. None of the three measures changed significantly between the two sessions. The x-intercept value was interpreted as an index of a threshold of aversion and its meaning and applicability were discussed.  相似文献

Forward and backward visual masking for patterns was investigated as a function of relative overlap between test and masking stimuli, relative intensity of masking stimulus and length of interval between stimuli. The extent of masking increased with increasing spatial overlap between stimuli and with increasing intensity of the masking stimulus. Increasing the interval between the stimuli decreased masking; this occurred at faster rates in backward than in forward masking. Possible mechanisms explaining these findings are discussed.  相似文献

A test stimulus (a visual form) which is below recognition threshold when flashed briefly against a steady background field can be raised to complete discriminability if the background field is terminated and replaced by darkness within about 100 msec of the test flash. There must therefore be an efficient storage process for the apparently “invisible” form. The phenomenon is shown to occur under a variety of conditions. It appears not to be a simple visual masking phenomenon. The tasks used are forced-choice, and the phenomenon provides a new demonstration of visual storage effects which previously have generally been reported only for supraliminal visual test stimuli.  相似文献

A choice theory analysis of similarity judgments   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The selection of one of several stimuli as most similar to a reference stimulus is assumed to satisfy a choice axiom that permits assigning ratio scale values to each variable-reference stimuli pair. The logarithm of this scale is treated as a distance measure, leading to the following testable conclusions about the pairwise choice probabilities as the reference stimulus is varied. First, the plot is a symmetrically truncated ogive with horizontal tails. Second, if two pairs of choice stimuli have the same midpoint, the ogive of one pair is part of the ogive of the other. In terms of this model, the hysteresis and midpoint displacement effects in the method of bisection are discussed, and relations with Coombs' unfolding techniques are explored. This work was supported in part by grant G-8864 from the National Science Foundation to the University of Pennsylvania. I wish to express my appreciation to Professors Robert R. Bush and Eugene Galanter, with whom I have had a number of very helpful discussions of these ideas.  相似文献

The role of transient and sustained channels in masking was investigated in groups with positive and negative symptoms in schizophrenia and in a control group. The target stimulus was a 3.0 c/deg sinusoidal grating, which was masked at 11 stimulus-onset asynchronies between -40 to 360 ms by a 1.0 c/deg mask or an 11.0 c/deg mask. The results showed that there was no difference between the control and positive-symptom groups in the perception of the 3 c/deg target stimulus, nor was there a difference when the target was masked by 1 or 11 c/deg masking stimuli. In comparison with the control and positive-symptom groups, the negative-symptom group showed a significantly higher threshold for the perception of the 3 c/deg target stimulus and more masking with a 1 c/deg mask, but not with an 11 c/deg mask. The results provide evidence for distinguishable differences in visual masking between groups with positive and negative symptoms in schizophrenia.  相似文献

Summary The effects of masking and simultaneous vs sequential exposure on identification accuracy of parafoveally presented pairs of stimuli were examined in four experiments. When masking figures were continuously present in positions not occupied by stimulus characters, accuracy of identification was significantly poorer on the relatively central member of a pair when members were simultaneously exposed and when the central member was exposed second. When masking figures were not used, performance was significantly poorer on the central member only when pair members were exposed simultaneously. Requiring the identification of both members of the pair produced a different ordering of overall accuracy among the simultaneous and sequential conditions from when only one member was identified. It was concluded that asymmetric lateral inhibition of feature extraction operated only when target and nontarget were simultaneously present. An additional source of asymmetric disruption occurs when masking figures flanking the target change before or with the appearance of the target.  相似文献

The amounts of ipsilateral and contralateral masking obtained with a modified psychophysical procedure were compared for vibratory stimuli presented to different body loci. Results of a combined forced-choice localization task and a forced-choice detection task were similar to the results obtained in previous investigations which employed method of limits and two-alternative, temporal forced-choice procedures, respectively. Ipsilateral maskers produced similar amounts of masking in both the detection and localization tasks for fingertip and arm test sites. Contralateral maskers resulted in considerably more masking in the localization task than in the detection task for both fingertip and arm test sites. When large longitudinal distances were introduced between the test stimulus and masker, little masking was evident in either the localization or detection task. It was concluded that the differences in the amount of ipsilateral and contralateral masking obtained with different psychophysical procedures reflect different effects of a masker on the detectable attributes of a test stimulus. Implications of these results for the study of multiple tactile perception were discussed.  相似文献

Both discrimination and identification tasks have been used to assess subjects' abilities to perceive vibratory spatial patterns presented to the skin. The present study examined discrimination and identification performance under comparable conditions. In Experiment 1, subjects attempted to discriminate a pair of patterns on some blocks of trials and to identify both members of a pair on other blocks. For both tasks, the time between the members of the pair was varied. Discrimination performance could be predicted accurately from identification data. Analysis of performance on identification trials indicated that subjects used discriminability information to identify pairs. In Experiment 2, discrimination and identification were compared when the temporal separation between patterns was fixed and a masking stimulus followed each pattern after a variable delay. Results suggest that temporal masking, rather than the time available for processing pattern information, is the major limitation in both discrimination and identification of sequences of tactile patterns.  相似文献
