AFRICAN AMERICAN COLLEGE WOMEN'S BODY IMAGE 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The purpose of this study was to examine general and cultural factors associated with body image perceptions of African American women college students. A total of 124 African American college women attending a historically Black college completed the following scales: African Self-Consciousness (ASC) scale, the Skin Color Satisfaction Scale (SCSS), the Body Mass Index (BMI), and several body image measures. Results from simultaneous multiple regression analyses suggest that all three factors collectively accounted for a significant amount of variance in dimensions of body image satisfaction. Specifically, SCSS accounted for a significant amount of variance in three body image dimensions (i.e., appearance evaluation, satisfaction with specific body areas, internalization of social cultural messages of appearance), suggesting that the greater satisfaction with one's skin color was associated with more positive, internal perspectives of one's body image. The BMI accounted for a significant amount of variance in measures of appearance evaluation and satisfaction with body areas, such that greater BMI scores were related to a less positive evaluation of overall appearance but more satisfaction with specific body areas. Implications of the findings and suggestions for future research are discussed. 相似文献

Abstraction et catégorisation chez des enfants africains. — l'étude porte sur deux groupes de Yoruba mâles de 12 ans: les uns (N : 26) ont été élevés en brousse et les autres (N : 24) peuvent être considérés comme relativement européanisés; on leur fait passer trois tests (classement d'objets; Goldstein-Sheerer Cube Test; Weigl-Goldstein-Scheerer Colour-Form Test). Dans le premier, les deux groupes ont montré le même niveau d'abstraction et ont utilisé à peu près les mêmes concepts : la couleur est préférée comme base de classification, la forme ou la fonction ne sont presque pas utilisées. Dans les deux autres tests, le groupe européanisé est supérieur au groupe de brousse. Comparés aux résultats obtenus par un groupe irlandais de même âge (N : 34), les résultats des enfants Yoruba sont, pour le test du Cube, inférieurs; mais pour la dernière épreuve, les résultats des Yoruba européanisés sont semblables à ceux des enfants européens. 相似文献

A total of 100 African American undergraduate students were given the Sexual Experiences Questionnaire (SEQ) (Fitzgerald et al., 1988) and an open-ended question assessing experiences of sexual harassment. Results showed a significant frequency of sexual imposition (19%), particularly sexual touching. Participants also clearly delineated a new category of sexual harassment previously untapped by largely Caucasian studies: comments or sexual attention based solely on racial stereotypes or racially based physical features. In conclusion, the reported differences with regard to experiences and definitions of sexual harassment indicate that previous assumptions of homogeneity of experience (with Caucasian women being the standard) appear to be incorrect. 相似文献

This study focuses on resilience in poor women and asks the question: In the face of a lifetime of adversity, stress, and poverty, what are the factors that enable some poor women to lead positive and productive lives? Fifty low-income, urban, African American women were interviewed, and factors that contribute to their resilience were explored. Specifically, we examined the influence of supportive and problematic social ties, downward social comparison, and self-efficacy on resilience, as measured by scales designed to assess well-being. In addition, the participants' perceptions of factors that contribute to their resilience were elicited. The women in the sample were between the ages of 19 and 54, were employed at least 20 hours per week, and had at least one child below the age of 13 at home. Multiple regression analyses revealed that problematic social ties and downward social comparison together predicted over 48% of the variance in resilience. 相似文献
