Eugene Carson Blake: Renewal in Church and Society

This article reviews the ecumenical involvement of Eugene Carson Blake, the second general secretary of the World Council of Churches (WCC) from 1966 to 1972, focusing on the support for the US civil rights movement and rejection of racism that he brought with him to the WCC. It also examines his role at the WCC's 4th Assembly, in Uppsala, which is often seen as a turning point in ecumenical history.     

Blake and the Bible: Biblical Exegesis in the Work of William Blake

Abstract:  William Blake's biblical interpretation relied on allusive, imaginative and even prophetic modes. Here this is explored through his vision of the divine in Europe: A Prophecy and by exploring his views on the relationships between the testaments. In the first part, a comparison of his vision with the book of Revelation shows similarities in imaginative attempts to subvert ingrained religious assumptions. In the second, Blake's ambiguous attitude towards the Old Testament, coloured by his sustained polemic against religion and law, is discussed. Finally, some thoughts on the continued relevance of Blake's imaginative exegesis are offered.     

A brief reply to Carson Strong

Carson Strong's reply to my response to his article demonstrates what happens when there is unacknowledged disagreement about the facts of a case or about the meaning of the terms used to describe those facts. I hope that our dialogue will help reduce this disagreement.     

Eugene O'Neill's Hughie and the grandiose addict

This paper offers a view on the role of grandiosity in addicted individuals - its self-protective and self-sustaining functions. Starting with a discussion of a fictional gambler, as described in a play by Eugene O'Neill, it continues with a discussion of the dynamic of aggrandizement, drawing on theoretical literature.     

Brain drain: A communitarian response to Brock and Blake

The problem of brain drain, the movement of skilled citizens of developing countries to developed ones, arises largely because of seriously unequal life prospects in different countries. Hence, there is something profoundly wrong with the brain drain, something that calls for a moral response. Brock and Blake offer such a response by debating the ethical rights and responsibilities of skilled professionals, and of the societies in which they live, from the perspective of moral liberalism. The aim of my paper is to develop a response to some of their arguments from the perspective of moral communitarianism, with particular reference to the work of one of its classical proponents in African philosophy, Kwame Gyekye.     

'Do be my enemy for friendship's sake' (Blake)

The author explores our psychological need for enemies and the contribution this makes to overt conflicts in the external world. Enemies serve as an opposite from which we can differentiate ourselves, either as an individual or as a group; they help us to define our physical and psychological boundaries. Enemies provide a target and an outlet for our aggression and also for the projection of the shadow. They also provide the stimulus to individuation, through the heroic encounter with the enemy in the unfamiliar world outside the home, particularly in adolescence. The psychic integration of 'self' and 'enemy' is explored as the outcome of individuation.     

尤金·加菲尔德与SCI述论

《科学引文索引》 (science citation index, SCI) , 是由尤金·加菲尔德创建于20世纪60年代, 通过文献引证关系建立起来的多学科文献检索工具。创建过程中先后受到弗兰克·谢泼德、威廉·阿德尔、戈登·艾伦和乔舒亚·利德伯格等思想的影响, 进行了大量的研究与试验。其主要功能是通过引文关系检索到不同学科领域的相关文献, 并基于自身结构特点兼具有一定科研评价功能。SCI引入中国后, 除作为检索工具外, 其科研评价功能备受青睐, 从而引发很多争议。通过SCI创建历史回顾和其主要功能阐述对以上争议试做回应。

Making the morally relevant features explicit: a response to Carson Strong

Carson Strong criticizes the application of my moral theory to bioethics cases. Some of his criticisms are due to my failure to make explicit that both the irrationality or rationality of a decision and the irrationality or rationality of the ranking of evils are part of morally relevant feature 3. Other criticisms are the result of his not using the two-step procedure in a sufficiently rigorous way. His claim that I come up with a wrong answer depends upon his incorrectly regarding a weakly justified violation as one that all impartial rational persons would agree was permitted, rather than as one about which rational persons disagree.     

Stuttering: Significant Theories and Therapies by Eugene F. Hahn

Video feedback amplifies critical individual and group processes that have implications for a social theory of the self. The judicious use of video replay facilitates the reworking of identity by (1) inciting the self to “become an object to itself,” thereby triggering new self-reflexive loops of awareness; (2) assisting the self to experience the various perspectives that group members hold toward it, thereby altering its own perspective of itself; (3) enabling the group to become an object to itself, thereby galvanizing a sense of identity and meaning; and (4) allowing clients to view and re-view themselves in a wide range of roles, thereby fostering a multidimensional concept of self. Literature on the use of video in groups is reviewed, and a social theory of the self as explicated by George Herbert Mead is summarized.
