We have assessed the optimal cone contrast sensitivity across eccentricity in human vision of the two cone-opponent mechanisms [L/M or red-green, and S/(L + M) or blue-yellow] and the luminance mechanism. We have used a novel stimulus, termed a 'sinring', that is a radially modulated sine-wave arc, Gaussian enveloped in both angular and radial directions. This stimulus overcomes the problem inherent in Gabor stimuli of confounding stimulus spatial frequency, size, and eccentricity and so allows contrast sensitivity to be tracked accurately into the periphery. Our results show that L/M cone opponency declines steeply across the human periphery and becomes behaviourally absent by 25-30 deg (in the nasal field). This result suggests that any L/M cone-opponent neurons found in primate peripheral retina beyond this limit are unlikely to be significant for colour contrast detection measured behaviourally.  相似文献

A cone-opponent-based vector model is used to derive the activity in the red-green, yellow-blue, and achromatic channels during a sequential asymmetric colour-matching experiment. Forty Munsell samples, simulated under illuminant C, were matched with their appearance under eight test illuminants. The test samples and backgrounds were photometrically isoluminant with each other. According to the model, the orthogonality of the channels is revealed when test illuminants lie along either red-green or yellow blue cardinal axes. The red green and yellow-blue outputs of the channels are described in terms of the hue of the sample. The fact that the three-channel model explains the data in a colour-matching experiment indicates that an early form of colour processing is mediated at a site where the three channels converge, probably the input layer of V1.  相似文献

The subjects were 16 college students assessed as having normal, uncorrected visual abilities. Each subject responded to the appearance of each of five variously colored ball sections as they were introduced into the subjects' visual field. Analysis indicated that colors with luminance values greater than 70 CD/M2 (black, blue, green) were detected further in the horizontal peripheral plane than were colors possessing values less than 36 CD/M2 (red, purple).  相似文献

We measured at the fovea the chromatic contrast threshold for stimuli modulated along different chromatic directions in the isoluminant plane of MBDKL colour space, considering the two cardinal axes (L/M) and S/(L + M) and other intermediate non-cardinal directions. This psychophysical determination was conducted as a function of stimulus size. The test stimulus was a foveal isoluminant Gaussian patch with a raised cosinusoidal temporal profile superimposed on a neutral background. The task was performed binocularly. The increment threshold was measured for three observers by a Bayesian adaptive psychometric method (QUEST). The Ricco area of complete spatial summation was estimated from the threshold-versus-area curves. The perceptive fields are smaller for the L/M-cone opponent direction than the S/(L + M)-cone opponent. The perceptive field sizes for the stimuli in non-cardinal chromatic directions and stimuli modulated at the (L/M)-cone opponent direction present similar values. Measurements were made at two luminance levels, 5 and 40 cd m(-2), but the differences found were small. The perceptive field sizes found could be associated with LGN area.  相似文献

The ability of observers to resolve moving targets, or dynamic visual acuity (DVA), was determined for a group of young adults (M age = 19.6 years) and a group of older adults (M age = 67.6 years). Targets were presented at two luminance levels over a range of velocities (30, 60, 90, and 120 deg/s) and at 2 durations (200 and 600 ms). The younger subjects exhibited superior DVA under nearly all conditions, but this effect was essentially eliminated by the luminance adjustment. These results are interpreted in terms of decreased retinal illumination in the older subjects rather than in terms of age-related changes in the underlying eye movement systems. Practical and theoretical implications are discussed.  相似文献

We measured the effect of a transient glare source on t heperceived brightness of astandard luminance (L(STD)) patch (0.5 cd/m2) as a function of the surround luminance (Ls). In the experiment, both increment and decrement stimuli were dependent on the value of the Ls (0.01, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, 1.0, 1.5, or 2.0 cd/m2). We adopted a magnitude comparison paradigm using constant stimuli to determine the test matching luminance (L(M)). When L(S) was lower than the luminance of the patch, which corresponds to increments, LM was lower than L(STD), and this effect was highest for the lowest L(S). There was a small but noticeable cusp as increments shifted to decrements. As L(S) increased further (i.e., as the decrement grew), L(M) flattened out below L(STF). The overall pattern of results could be interpreted in terms of the concept of contrast brightness, with consideration of the intrinsic differences in brightness evaluations between decrements and increments.  相似文献

Forty-five 4-month-old infants were tested for color constancy using a familiarization, paired-comparison paradigm. Infants were familiarized and tested with colored stimuli under two conditions: (1) no change in the illuminant between familiarization and test and (2) a change in the illuminant between familiarization and test. Infants correctly recognized the familiarization color when tested with no change in the illuminant. Infants tested with a change in the illuminant correctly recognized the familiar color under some conditions yet failed to do so under others. Several explanations are considered for these results and it is concluded that color constancy operates immaturely at 4 months of age.  相似文献

Grating induction is a brightness effect in which a counterphase spatial brightness variation (a grating) is induced in a homogeneous test strip that is surrounded by an inducing luminance grating (McCourt, 1982 Vision Research 22 119-134). Moulden and Kingdom (1991 Vision Research 31 1999-2008) introduced an interesting variant of grating induction (sometimes referred to as gradient induction) in which multiple strips of either a linear luminance ramp or a sine-wave grating were interlaced with strips of homogeneous luminance. We (Blakeslee and McCourt, 1999 Vision Research 39 4361-4377) demonstrated that a simple multiscale filtering explanation could account for grating induction. Recently, however, Logvinenko (2003 Perception 32 621-626) presented several arguments impugning the adequacy of spatial filtering approaches to understanding brightness induction in gradient induction stimuli. We propose that Logvinenko's arguments apply only to a limited class of filtering models, specifically those which employ only a single spatial filter. To test this hypothesis we modeled gradient induction stimuli as a function of inducing contrast, as well as Logvinenko's (2003) remote induction stimulus, using our multiscale oriented difference-of-Gaussians (ODOG) model (Blakeslee and McCourt 1999). The ODOG model successfully predicts the appearance of the inducing strips and the homogeneous test strips in the gradient induction stimuli and the appearance of the test patches in the remote induction stimuli. These results refute Logvinenko's (2003) claims, and we interpret them as providing strong evidence for a multiscale filtering approach to understanding both gradient induction and remote brightness induction effects.  相似文献

A “competition” paradigm was developed to examine separately the effects of pattern contrast and spatial frequency characteristics on the strength of orientation-contingent color aftereffects (McCollough effects). After adapting to alternately presented red/black and green/black square-wave gratings (one horizontal, one vertical), 11 subjects viewed seven different kinds of test patterns. Unlike Standard McCollough effect test stimuli, the present patterns had variable luminance profiles running both horizontally and vertically within each test pattern area. Forced choice responses were used to determine which aftereffect color (red or green) appeared, as characteristics of vertical and horizontal luminance profiles were varied separately among test stimulus types. We conclude that pattern contrast and human contrast sensitivity account for aftereffect colors in such stimuli. When contrast is taken into consideration, aftereffects are not predicted by similarity between adaptation and test pattern Fourier characteristics, nor are they predicted by the width, per se, of pattern elements.  相似文献

Naive observers viewed a sequence of colored Mondrian patterns, simulated on a color monitor. Each pattern was presented twice in succession, first under one daylight illuminant with a correlated color temperature of either 16,000 or 4000 K and then under the other, to test for color constancy. The observers compared the central square of the pattern across illuminants, either rating it for sameness of material appearance or sameness of hue and saturation or judging an objective property-that is, whether its change of color originated from a change in material or only from a change in illumination. Average color constancy indices were high for material appearance ratings and binary judgments of origin and low for hue-saturation ratings. Individuals' performance varied, but judgments of material and of hue and saturation remained demarcated. Observers seem able to separate phenomenal percepts from their ontological projections of mental appearance onto physical phenomena; thus, even when a chromatic change alters perceived hue and saturation, observers can reliably infer the cause, the constancy of the underlying surface spectral reflectance.  相似文献

Many models of color constancy assume that the visual system estimates the scene illuminant and uses this estimate to determine an object's color appearance. A version of this illumination-estimation hypothesis, in which the illuminant estimate is associated with the explicitly perceived illuminant, was tested. Observers made appearance matches between two experimental chambers. Observers adjusted the illumination in one chamber to match that in the other and then adjusted a test patch in one chamber to match the surface lightness of a patch in the other. The illumination-estimation hypothesis, as formulated here, predicted that after both matches the luminances of the light reflected from the test patches would be identical. The data contradict this prediction. A second experiment showed that manipulating the immediate surround of a test patch can affect perceived lightness without affecting perceived illumination. This finding also falsifies the illumination-estimation hypothesis.  相似文献

Some theories of surface-colour perception assume that observers estimate the illuminant on a scene so that its effects can be discounted. A critical test of this interpretation of colour constancy is whether surface-colour matching is worse when the number of surfaces in a scene is so small that any illuminant estimate is unreliable. In the experiment reported here, observers made asymmetric colour matches between pairs of simultaneously presented Mondrian-like patterns under different daylights. The patterns had either 49 surfaces or a minimal 2 surfaces. No significant effect of number was found, suggesting that illuminant estimates are unnecessary for surface-colour matching.  相似文献

Two experiments on partial reinforcement were undertaken to test predictions made by a two process model of discrimination learning. In the first experiment rats were trained on a discrimination involving two relevant cues: one group (C) was trained on a 100: o schedule, the other (P) on a 50:0 schedule. Both groups were then given transfer tests with the two cues presented individually; finally all animals were extinguished on the original training stimuli and on the single cue stimuli. During extinction there was a negative correlation between the number of correct responses made by individual subjects of Group C to each single cue; whereas the correlation was positive for subjects of Group P. The second experiment employed basically the same design, but subjects were trained with seven relevant cues. The results of transfer tests showed that subjects of Group P learned to attach the correct response to many more cues than subjects of Group C. This suggests that the breadth of learning is greater under partial than under consistent reinforcement. The results were predicted by the model of discrimination learning under test.  相似文献

Luminance- or color-defined +/- 45 degrees-oriented bars were arranged to yield single-feature or double-conjunction texture pairs. In the former, the global edge between two regions is formed by differences in one attribute (orientation, or color, or luminance). In the color/orientation double-conjunction pair, one region has +45 degrees red and -45 degrees green textels, the other -45 degrees red and +45 degrees green textels (the luminance/orientation double-conjunction pair is similar); such a pair contains a single-feature orientation edge in the subset of red (or green) textels, and a color edge in the subset of +45 degrees (or -45 degrees) textels. We studied whether edge detection improved when observers were instructed to attend to such subsets. Two groups of observers participated: in the test group, the stimulus construction was explained to observers, and they were cued to attend to one subset. The control group ran through the same total number of sessions without explanations/cues. The effect of cuing was week but statistically significant. Feature cuing was more effective for color/orientation than for luminance/orientation conjunctions. Within each stimulus category, performance was nearly the same no matter which subset was attended to. On average, a global performance improvement occurred over time even without cuing, but some observers did not improve with either cuing or practice. We discuss these results in the context of one-versus two-stage segregation theories, as well as by reference to signal enhancement versus noise suppression. We conclude that texture segregation can be improved by attentional strategies aimed to isolate specific stimulus features.  相似文献

There is an ongoing debate related to whether chromatic motion perception arises as a consequence of a chromatic signal only (eg Wandell et al 1999 Neuron 24 901-909) or a signal that is essentially based on luminance processes (luminance artifacts) (Mullen et al 2003 Vision Research 43 1235-1247). These two views conform to the idea that colour and luminance processes are physiologically independent (Livingstone and Hubel 1988 Science 240 740-749), but according to other reports many primary cortical 'V1' cells respond to both colour and luminance contrast (eg Vidyasagar et al 2002 European Journal of Neuroscience 16 945-956). A psychophysical task was designed to test whether possible interaction between luminance and chromatic contrast could account for perception of chromatic motion. It is shown that subjects respond in a manner that reflects involvement of both processes.  相似文献

In Experiment 1, 5 subjects were exposed to a stimulus-pairing procedure in which two nonsense syllables, identified by a letter-number code as A1 and C2, each predicted the onset of a sexual film clip, and the nonsense syllables A2 and C1 each predicted the onset of a nonsexual film clip. Subjects were then exposed to a matching-to-sample test in which the nonsense syllables A1 and A2 were presented as sample stimuli and C1 and C2 were presented as comparison stimuli and vice versa (i.e., C stimuli as samples and A stimuli as comparisons). All subjects matched A1 with C2 and A2 with C1. Subjects were then trained on the conditional discriminations A1-B1, A2-B2, B1-C1, B2-C2, after which the matching-to-sample test was again administered. All subjects continued to match A1 with C2 and A2 with C1 in accordance with the earlier stimulus-pairing contingencies. An additional 5 subjects were exposed first to conditional discrimination training and testing before being exposed to the incongruous stimulus pairing and matching-to-sample testing. Under these conditions, 4 of the 5 subjects always matched A1 with C1 and A2 with C2. Experiment 2 replicated Experiment 1, except that a matching-to-sample test was not administered following the initial training procedure. Under these conditions, matching-to-sample test performances were controlled by the contingencies that had immediately preceded the test. Experiment 3 indicated that initial matching-to-sample test performances were unlikely to change, even after repeated exposure to incongruous training and testing. Experiment 4 demonstrated that pretraining with unrelated stimulus sets increased the sensitivity of matching-to-sample test performances to incongruous contingencies when they were similar in format to those arranged during pretraining. These data may have implications for a behavior-analytic interpretation of attitude formation and change.  相似文献

The hue of induced colour was studied as a function of surround/test field luminance ratio using a chromatic surround and an achromatic central test field. The hue of the test field was determined by means of colour naming methods. Three inducing colours were used: blue (Wr No. 47), green (Wr No. 58), and red (Wr No. 25). The number of subjects was 9–11 in the two experiments. The luminance ratio (ranging from 0.07 to 17.1) was varied by varying the luminance of the test field (Experiment 1) or of the surround (Experiment 2). For the blue surround the results show a hue shift in accordance with the Bezold-Brücke phenomenon. For the inducing colours green and red the induced colours are weak, and the hue shifts are more or less unsystematic though there are individual subjects showing a trend in the Bezold-Brücke direction. It is concluded that the hue shifts depend on the luminance relations rather than on the test field luminance.  相似文献

We report a fascinating phenomenon that emerges when a surface is viewed through a tube held close to one eye, with the other eye open. The disk-shaped area seen through the tube looks strikingly brighter and, when viewed on a textured background, also of higher spatial contrast than the same surface area viewed without a tube. The effect is reminiscent of a spotlight illuminating the area under consideration. We call this the 'tube effect'. The tube effect is one of the strongest contrast illusions known to us. It requires a matching luminance that is twice as high as the reference luminance seen through the tube. Brightness ratings increase linearly with the log of the background luminance. The effect (i) produces a dark afterimage, (ii) reverses in polarity with low ambient illumination, (iii) assumes the complementary colour of the illuminant, and (iv) persists with fully dilated pupils. Potential explanations include simultaneous contrast (due to the penumbra and dark inner walls of the tube) and veiling of the surround (due to local adaptation and a lower gain factor).  相似文献

IntroductionColor constancy, a property of conscious color experience, maintains object color appearance across illuminant changes. We investigated the neural correlates of subliminal vs. conscious stimulus deviations of color constancy manipulations.MethodsBehavioral and Oddball EEG/ERP experiments were conducted (n = 20). Psychophysical illuminant variation discrimination thresholds were first estimated, to establish individual perceptual awareness ranges, allowing for simulation of natural daylight spectral and spatial variations on colored surfaces, at different ambiguity levels.ResultsBehavioral results validated illuminant choice. ERPs showed a significant modulation of posterior P1 component specifically for the subliminal global uniform deviation condition, respecting color constancy. Neural correlates of conscious percepts were identified at posterior N2-P3 latencies, parietal (P3b) and frontal regions.ConclusionsWe identified an early subliminal correlate of low-level illuminant change, which reflects automatic unconscious detection of global color constancy deviations. Its suppression under conscious perception is probably due to top-down suppression according to prediction error models.  相似文献

Subjects determined as rapidly as possible whether each line drawing portrayed a left or a right hand when the drawings were presented in any of four versions (palm or back of either hand) and in any of six orientations in the picture plane. Reaction time varied systematically with orientation and, in the absence of advance information, was over 400 msec longer for the fingers-down orientation. However, when subjects were instructed to imagine a specified (palm or back) view of a specified (left or right) hand in a specified orientation, reaction times to test hands that were consistent with these instructions were short (about 500 msec), independent of orientation, and unacompanied by errors. It is proposed that subjects determine whether a visually presented hand is left or right by moving a mental "phantom" of one of their own hands into the portrayed position and by then comparing its imagined appearance against the appearance of the externally presented hand.  相似文献
