From reviews published in the “serious” pop music press, twenty recordings were selected which had received consistently favourable
appraisals on affective and evaluative bases. A further twenty recordings were selected on the basis of high levels of chart
performance but a lack of critical acclaim. Sixty-four subjects rated representative excerpts of these recordings on 11-point
scales of either liking or artistic merit. The results indicated significantly lower liking and artistic merit ratings of
critically praised excerpts; a positive liking-artistic merit correlation; and some “fragmentation” between affective and
evaluative responses. The apparent discrepancy between the attitudes of the music press and subjects' ratings is discussed
in terms of the availability and sophistication of evaluation cues. 相似文献

Thirty adult subjects completed an Operant Music Listening Recorder (OMLR) task with two unfamiliar and two familiar music
channels (one “popular” and one “classical” in each case), then rated the music on each channel on seven-point scales for
liking, quality, and familiarity. The two familiar music channels received significantly higher ratings than the two unfamiliar
channels on all three rating scales, and there were no significant main effects or interactions involving musical style. The
predictions (a) that subjects would spend more time listening to the familiar channels on the OMLR task, and (b) that measures
of listening time would display higher correlations with ratings of liking than with those of quality both received weak support
from the direction of the results, but neither was confirmed by statistical significance tests. The results are discussed
in terms of the fragmentation between the affective and evaluative components of attitudes toward music. 相似文献

Previous research indicates that the specific emotions expressed by stimuli may be closely associated with their pleasing and arousing qualities, and this parallels psychomusicological research on the relationship between these two stimulus qualities. In light of this, the present research contends that the emotions expressed by musical stimuli are associated with their pleasing and arousing qualities. Sixty subjects rated 32 musical excerpts on 11-point scales representing the expression of eight specific emotions. Statistical analyses showed that these emotion ratings were predictable on the basis of 60 additional subjects' ratings of each excerpt in terms of 'liking' and 'arousal potential'. This indicates that ratings of liking and arousal potential are essentially similar to ratings of the specific emotions expressed by musical stimuli. These results are discussed in terms of the relationship between liking and arousal potential, and the implications that this may have for research on affective processes. 相似文献

Facial memory draws upon both veridical detail and beliefs based upon prior knowledge and stereotypes. Shepherd, Ellis, McMurran,
and Davies (1978) demonstrated that subjects' perception and subsequent reconstruction of a face using the “Photofit” kit
was significantly influenced by whether they believed the person to be a multiple murderer or a local hero. The current study
explored whether similar effects would occur when the face involved was one of four male celebrities about which subjects
held pronounced positive or negative views and where reconstruction was accomplished using the computerised “E-fit” composite
system. Semantic differential ratings showed significant influences of liking on subjects' perception and reconstruction of
the faces involved, though the pattern of effects was not always readily predictable. Liking also influenced accuracy of reconstruction;
ranking and naming data showed that the best composites were made by subjects who disliked the target and made their reconstructions
with the aid of a photograph. 相似文献

In two studies, one employing Spanish students and the other English students, questionnaire measures of Sensation Seeking and Openness to Experience were correlated with liking for major music types, several short music excerpts, and eight categories of painting (presented as slides). Inter‐correlations between music preference measures, painting preference, and personality are reported. In both samples, the Sensation Seeking Scale (Form V) and, particularly, the Experience Seeking sub‐scale were associated with a factor contrasting liking for ‘hard rock’ music and ‘violent–abstract’ art with liking for ‘neutral–realistic’ art and ‘easy listening’ music. Several substantial relationships between aesthetics measures and Openness to Experience (from the NEO‐PI‐R) were also found, though mostly in the English sample. The results reinforce the view that personality dimensions such as Sensation Seeking and Openness are important influences on aesthetic judgment. Copyright © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. 相似文献

Enactive appraisal 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Giovanna Colombetti 《Phenomenology and the Cognitive Sciences》2007,6(4):527-546
Emotion theorists tend to separate “arousal” and other bodily events such as “actions” from the evaluative component of emotion
known as “appraisal.” This separation, I argue, implies phenomenologically implausible accounts of emotion elicitation and
personhood. As an alternative, I attempt a reconceptualization of the notion of appraisal within the so-called “enactive approach.”
I argue that appraisal is constituted by arousal and action, and I show how this view relates to an embodied and affective
notion of personhood.

Emotions in music are conveyed by a variety of acoustic cues. Notably, the positive association between sound intensity and arousal has particular biological relevance. However, although amplitude normalization is a common procedure used to control for intensity in music psychology research, direct comparisons between emotional ratings of original and amplitude-normalized musical excerpts are lacking. In this study, 30 nonmusicians retrospectively rated the subjective arousal and pleasantness induced by 84 six-second classical music excerpts, and an additional 30 nonmusicians rated the same excerpts normalized for amplitude. Following the cue-redundancy and Brunswik lens models of acoustic communication, we hypothesized that arousal and pleasantness ratings would be similar for both versions of the excerpts, and that arousal could be predicted effectively by other acoustic cues besides intensity.Although the difference in mean arousal and pleasantness ratings between original and amplitude-normalized excerpts correlated significantly with the amplitude adjustment, ratings for both sets of excerpts were highly correlated and shared a similar range of values, thus validating the use of amplitude normalization in music emotion research. Two acoustic parameters, spectral flux and spectral entropy, accounted for 65% of the variance in arousal ratings for both sets, indicating that spectral features can effectively predict arousal. Additionally, we confirmed that amplitude-normalized excerpts were adequately matched for loudness. Overall, the results corroborate our hypotheses and support the cue-redundancy and Brunswik lens models. 相似文献

McGuigan’s neuromuscular model of information processing (1978a, 1978b, and 1989) was investigated by electrically recording
eye movements (electro-oculograms), covert lip and preferred arm responses (electromyograms), and electroencephalograms. This
model predicts that codes are generated as the lips are uniquely activated when processing words beginning with bilabial sounds
like “p” or “b,” as is the right arm to words like “pencil” that refer to its use. Twelve adult female participants selected
for their high imagery ratings were asked to form images to three orally presented linguistic stimuli: the letter “p,” the
words “pencil” and “pasture,” and to a control stimulus, the words “go blank.” The following findings were significant beyond
the 0.05 level: an increased covert lip response only to the letter “p,” increased vertical eye activity to “p” and to the
word “pencil,” right arm response only to the word “pencil,” and a decreased percentage of alpha waves from the right 02 lead
only to the word “pasture.” Since these covert responses uniquely occurred during specific imagery processes, it is inferred
that they are components of neuromuscular circuits that function in accord with the model of information processing tested. 相似文献

This paper is an exploration of how we do things with music—that is, the way that we use music as an “esthetic technology”
to enact micro-practices of emotion regulation, communicative expression, identity construction, and interpersonal coordination
that drive core aspects of our emotional and social existence. The main thesis is: from birth, music is directly perceived
as an affordance-laden structure. Music, I argue, affords a sonic world, an exploratory space or “nested acoustic environment”
that further affords possibilities for, among other things, (1) emotion regulation and (2) social coordination. When we do
things with music, we are engaged in the work of creating and cultivating the self, as well as creating and cultivating a
shared world that we inhabit with others. I develop this thesis by first introducing the notion of a “musical affordance”.
Next, I look at how “emotional affordances” in music are exploited to construct and regulate emotions. I summon empirical
research on neonate music therapy to argue that this is something we emerge from the womb knowing how to do. I then look at
“social affordances” in music, arguing that joint attention to social affordances in music alters how music is both perceived
and appropriated by joint attenders within social listening contexts. In support, I describe the experience of listening to
and engaging with music in a live concert setting. Thinking of music as an affordance-laden structure thus reaffirms the crucial
role that music plays in constructing and regulating emotional and social experiences in everyday life. 相似文献

The essay shows the common ground between music and philosophy from the origin of Western philosophy to the crisis of metaphysical
thinking, in particular with Nietzsche and Benjamin. At the beginning, the relationship between philosophy and music is marked
by the hegemony of the word on the sound. This is the nature of the Platonic idea of music. With Nietzsche and Benjamin this
hegemony is denied and a new vision of the relationship becomes possible. The sound is the origin both of language and of
music. In thinking about this origin, philosophy shows that “thinking about music” is “thinking in music”, and that this thinking
is the origin of philosophy itself. 相似文献

This experiment, with 167 introductory psychology subjects, successfully replicated and extended to a wider array of affective,
evaluative, and cognitive reactions, previous research on how would-be helpers cope when their help is rejected. It again
supported the thesis that violation of perceived expectancy of acceptance mediates the effects of rejection. Using an individual
difference measure of generalized self-perceptions of being a person who is sufficientlyefficacious and caring (acronym, EFCA) to help others, we found support for the predictions that high EFCAs would react more strongly than low EFCAs
on “proximal” forms of coping, but relatively less strongly on “confrontational” (future-oriented) forms. Our rationale was
that high EFCAs expect more acceptance, are more optimistic, and have greater self-investment in the outcome. Mixed support
was obtained for the prediction that situational differences in prior expectancy of acceptance moderate the effects of rejection.

Although the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale(BPRS) has been utilized across several clinical settings, its potential utility
within forensic psychiatric hospitals has not yet been investigated. Given the diversity of training and background among
correctional mental health workers (i.e., psychiatrists, psychiatric nurses, occupational therapists, recreation therapists,
psychologists, social workers, etc.) it is possible that the uniform use of the BPRS among the correctional staff would require
extensive training and that substantial “refresher” training may be required to maintain the integrity of rater practices.
The present study examined the ability of previously trained forensic mental health professionals to accurately assess psychopathology
using the BPRS. Overall, experienced raters demonstrated relatively high concordance rates with “gold standard” ratings across
three BPRS training videos (Case 1, Case2 and Case 3). No overall “rater drift” was apparent. However, raters were found to
make significantly more errors when rating behavioral observation ratings than for ratings based on self-report patient statements.
Findings suggest that ratings done by forensic mental health workers are relatively accurate when compared to “gold standard”
ratings established for assessment of community and forensic psychiatric patients.

Recent understanding of subjective well-being suggests that it consists of global judgments of life satisfaction, hedonic
experiences, and beliefs about facets of one’s life. Traditionally, life satisfaction judgments have been the outcome of interest
in studies examining the relationship between religiosity and well-being. Two studies were conducted to look at the interactive
effects of personal religious beliefs, namely God images, and environmental stimuli, particularly priming the thought of “God.”
The first study examines hedonic experiences, which is one of the information sources when constructing a well-being judgment.
A second study attempts to replicate the findings with life satisfaction ratings. Results of the first study showed that one’s
image of God as a controlling or non-controlling entity moderated the affective response to being primed to think about God.
In particular, those who had a high controlling image of God had a negative affective reaction to the God prime. Results of
the second study replicated the pattern of results using life satisfaction ratings as the dependent variable. 相似文献

The mere-exposure literature has shown that familiar objects are preferred to novel objects. However, no work has definitively
shown that mere exposure can direct and facilitate approach movements. In Experiment 1, participants were shown stimuli and
were later re-exposed to them along with novel stimuli. Participants were directed to make an approach or avoidant motion
to each and response times were recorded. As predicted, participants were quicker to approach and slower to avoid familiar
relative to novel stimuli. In Experiment 2, participants were shown mere-exposed and novel symbols and were asked to “push”
or “pull” a joystick in response to each, based on their intuition. Extending Experiment 1’s findings, participants freely
selected an approach response more frequently for familiar compared to novel stimuli. Moreover, in this same experiment, familiar
stimuli were judged as more likeable than were novel stimuli, and participants’ liking for familiar stimuli correlated with
the frequency with which they were approached. Implications of these findings are discussed. 相似文献

Academic press and sense of community: Conflict, congruence, and implications for student achievement
Roger C. Shouse 《Social Psychology of Education》1996,1(1):47-68
This paper examines tensions between two visions of schooling. One stresses social cohesion (i.e., common beliefs, shared
activities, and caring relations between members). The other emphasizes strong academic mission (i.e., values and practices
that reinforce high standards for student performance). Though not incongruous, numerous organizational studies reveal the
potential for social cohesion and communality to be achieved at the expense of academic demand or “press.” To examine their
separate and joint effects, measures of academic press and communality are developed from NELS:88 First Follow-up data. Results
of hierarchical regression analyses indicate (1) significant links between academic press and student achievement; (2) that
academic press has its greatest achievement effect among low-SES schools; (3) that strong sense of community may have a negative
impact on achievement in low-SES schools with weak academic press; and (4) that for low- and middle-SES schools, the greatest
achievement effects follow from strong combinations of communality and academic press. These findings highlight an important
additional component of the “school as community” model, indicating that for most schools, academic press serves as a key
prerequisite for the positive achievement effects of communality.

This article examines the power of music to help transform suffering. It draws on insights from the work of music theorist
David Schwarz (1997) that bridges psychoanalysis, music, and culture; and from Daniel Levitin’s (2008) work on music and human nature, especially as it pertains to religion, ritual and songs. Schwarz describes listening to
music as a process of retrospective fantasy and as a type of transference experience. If how we listen to music is shaped
by traces of past experiences, then music as a resource in pastoral care has the potential to assist ministers in the process
of guiding their parishioners to re-trace painful experiences in ways that “re-sound” with thoughts and feelings which have
become an impediment to healing. A “case study” in which the author was a “player” (or more accurately performer) is briefly
examined, and the role of music in the lives of Steve Lopez and Nathaniel Ayers (Lopez 2008) is explored to demonstrate how music—specifically religious music or song associated with religious ritual—is an overlooked
resource for pastoral care. The article concludes with an illustration of how individuals’ personal associations with a hymn
may have implications for pastoral care. 相似文献

We examined liking for happy- and sad-sounding music as a function of exposure, which varied both in quantity (number of exposures) and in quality (focused or incidental listening). Liking ratings were higher for happy than for sad music after focused listening, but similar after incidental listening. In the incidental condition, liking ratings increased linearly as a function of exposure. In the focused condition, liking ratings were an inverted U-shaped function of exposure, with initial increases in liking (after 2 exposures) followed by decreases (after 8 or 32 exposures). The results documented that: (1) sad music is liked as much as happy music in some instances; (2) frequency of exposure causes both familiarity (positive) and over-familiarity (negative) effects; and (3) effects of exposure on liking differ for focused and incidental listening. 相似文献
