Sometimes a goal-directed arm movement has to be modified en route due to an unforeseen perturbation such as a target displacement or a hand displacement by an external force. In this paper several aspects of that modification process are addressed. Subjects had to perform a point-to-point movement task on a computer screen using a mouse-coupled pointer as the representation of the hand position. Trajectory modifications were imposed by unexpectedly changing the position of the target or by changing the relation between mouse and screen pointer. In the first series of experiments, we examined how often a trajectory is updated. Here, trajectory modifications were imposed by unexpectedly changing the normal relation between mouse and pointer to a shear-like relation, where a percentage of the forward/backward position of the hand was added to the pointer position in the left/right direction. Withdrawal of visual feedback during the movement revealed that trajectories were updated at interval times shorter than 200 ms. From the similarity with experiments where the original relation between mouse and pointer was restored during the movements, we conclude that motor plans are updated on-line to move the hand from its current perceived position to the target. In a second series of experiments, we studied whether a continuous change in target position yields similar trajectory modifications as a continuous hand displacement. To mimic the latter perturbation, we used the above-mentioned distortion of the mouse-pointer relation. We found that the resulting hand paths did not differ for the two visual perturbations and conclude that the perturbed, goal-directed movements are modified in a consistent way, irrespective of whether the position of the target or hand was perturbed. Simulations of the experimental data with a kinematic reaching model support this conclusion. 相似文献

This study examined rhythmic finger movements in the steady state and when momentarily perturbed in order to derive their qualitative dynamical properties. Movement frequency, amplitude, and peak velocity were stable under perturbation, signaling the presence of an attractor, and the topological dimensionality of that attractor was approximately equal to one. The strength of the attractor was constant with increasing movement frequency, and the Fourier spectra of the steady-state trials showed an alternating harmonic pattern. These results are consistent with a previously derived nonlinear oscillator model. However, the oscillation was phase advanced by perturbation overall, and a consistent phase-dependent, phase-shift pattern occurred, which is inconsistent with the model. The overall phase advance also shows that any central pattern generator responsible for generating the rhythm must be nontrivially modulated by the limb being controlled. 相似文献

Control of velocity and position in single joint movements 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Previous research on single joint movements has lead to the development of models of control that propose that movement speed and distance are controlled through an initial pulsatile signal that can be modified in both amplitude and duration. However, the manner in which the amplitude and duration are modulated during the control of movement remains controversial. We now report two studies that were designed to differentiate the mechanisms used to control movement speed from those employed to control final position accuracy. In our first study, participants move at a series of speeds to a single spatial target. In this task, acceleration duration (pulse-width) varied substantially across speeds, and was negatively correlated with peak acceleration (pulse-height). In a second experiment, we removed the spatial target, but required movements at the three speeds similar to those used in the first study. In this task, acceleration amplitude varied extensively across the speed targets, while acceleration duration remained constant. Taken together, our current findings demonstrate that pulse-width measures can be modulated independently from pulse-height measures, and that a positive correlation between such measures is not obligatory, even when sampled across a range of movement speeds. In addition, our findings suggest that pulse-height modulation plays a primary role in controlling movement speed and specifying target distance, whereas pulse-width mechanisms are employed to correct errors in pulse-height control, as required to achieve spatial precision in final limb position. 相似文献

Discussing "rationalizing" interpretations of Freud's work and suggesting as an example Jürgen Habermas' reception of Freud the authors mark non-rationalized forms of speaking and silence as specifically Freudian discoveries. Objecting to Freud's recourse to Plato's allegory of the yet undivided "globe man" they draw upon Nietzsche's critique of the "true world" (beyond phenomena). 相似文献

When learning a novel motor task, the sensorimotor system must develop new strategies to efficiently control the limb(s) involved, and this adaptation appears to be developed through the construction of a behavioral map known as an 'internal model'. A common method to uncover the mechanisms of adaptation and reorganization processes is to expose the system to new environmental conditions, typically by introducing visual or mechanical distortions. The present study investigated the adaptation mechanisms of the human sensorimotor system to horizontal and vertical mirror distortions (HMD and VMD) during the execution of fast goal-directed arm movements. Mirror distortions (MDs) were created by means of virtual visual feedback on a computer screen while the movement was executed on a graphics tablet. Twenty healthy adult participants were recruited and assigned to one of two groups of 10 people each. Tests were divided in two subsequent blocks of five trials. The first block consisted of trials with no mirror distortion (NMD), while the second block was recorded when exposing one group to HMD and the other to VMD. Both MDs resulted in kinematic changes: during the tests with the MDs the participants did not reach the performance level found at the NMD test. Motor performance during HMD appeared to be globally better than during VMD and the adaptation process to VMD appeared to be slower than to HMD, but data interpretation was hampered by large within-participant and between-participant variability. In-depth analyses of the data revealed that most of the motor performance information was contained in the direction of movement. The data supported the idea that the internal model for HMD was already partially built. 相似文献

Mirror self-experience is re-casted away from the cognitivist interpretation that has dominated discussions on the issue since the establishment of the mirror mark test. Ideas formulated by Merleau-Ponty on mirror self-experience point to the profoundly unsettling encounter with one's specular double. These ideas, together with developmental evidence are re-visited to provide a new, psychologically and phenomenologically more valid account of mirror self-experience: an experience associated with deep wariness. 相似文献

Examinations of goal-directed movements reveal a process of control that operates to make adjustments on the basis of the expected visual afference associated with the limb's movement. This experiment examined the impact of perturbations to the perceived and actual velocity of aiming movements when each was presented alone or in tandem with the other. Perturbations to perceived velocity were achieved by translating the background over which aiming movements were performed. An aiming stylus that discharged air either in the direction of the movement or in the direction opposite the movement generated the actual velocity perturbations. Kinematic analyses of the aiming movements revealed that only the actual perturbation influenced the control of early movement trajectories. The results are discussed with respect to the influence that visual information has on the control exerted against physical perturbations. Speculations are raised regarding how potential for perturbations influences the strategies adopted for minimizing their impact. 相似文献

The authors report 3 experiments that examine a new mechanism by which overt head movements can affect attitude change. In each experiment, participants were induced to either nod or to shake their heads while listening to a persuasive message. When the message arguments were strong, nodding produced more persuasion than shaking. When the arguments were weak, the reverse occurred. These effects were most pronounced when elaboration was high. These findings are consistent with the "self-validation" hypothesis that postulates that head movements either enhance (nodding) or undermine (shaking) confidence in one's thoughts about the message. In a 4th experiment, the authors extended this result to another overt behavior (writing with the dominant or nondominant hand) and a different attitude domain (self-esteem). 相似文献

Ehrlichman and Weinberger (1978, Psychological Bulletin 85, 1080-1101) have suggested that the distance between participants during face-to-face interviewing may be a significant determinant of directional patterns of conjugate lateral eye movements (CLEMS). As predicted, at the longer, social distance CLEMS were dependent on the verbal or spatial nature of questions; when interactants were at a closer, personal distance CLEMS became more consistent in direction, regardless of problem type. Distance manipulation also differentially altered CLEM patterns for the two sexes. 相似文献

Recurrence quantification analysis (RQA) has been successfully used for describing dynamic systems that are too complex to be characterized adequately by standard methods in time series analysis. More recently, RQA has been used for analyzing the coordination of gaze patterns between cooperating individuals. Here, we extend RQA to the characterization of fixation sequences, and we show that the global and local temporal characteristics of fixation sequences can be captured by a small number of RQA measures that have a clear interpretation in this context. We applied RQA to the analysis of a study in which observers looked at different scenes under natural or gaze-contingent viewing conditions, and we found large differences in the RQA measures between the viewing conditions, indicating that RQA is a powerful new tool for the analysis of the temporal patterns of eye movement behavior. 相似文献

In the rubber hand illusion (RHI) one’s hand is hidden, and a fake hand is visible. We explored the situation in which visual information was available indirectly in a mirror. In the mirror condition, compared to the standard condition (fake hand visible directly), we found no reduction of the RHI following synchronised stimulation, as measured by crossmanual pointing and by a questionnaire. We replicated the finding with a smaller mirror that prevented visibility of the face. The RHI was eliminated when a wooden block replaced the fake hand, or when the hand belonged to another person or mannequin. We conclude that awareness of the reflection is the critical variable, despite the distant visual localisation of the hand in a mirror and the third-person perspective. Stimuli seen in a mirror activate the same response as stimuli seen in peripersonal space, through knowledge that they are near one’s body. 相似文献

Information entropy and mutual information were investigated in discrete movement aiming tasks over a wide range of spatial (20-160 mm) and temporal (250-1250 ms) constraints. Information entropy was calculated using two distinct analyses: (1) with no assumption on the nature of the data distribution; and (2) assuming the data have a normal distribution. The two analyses showed different results in the estimate of entropy that also changed as a function of task goals, indicating that the movement trajectory data were not from a normal distribution. It was also found that the information entropy of the discrete aiming movements was lower than the task defined indices of difficulty (ID) that were selected for the congruence with Fitts' law. Mutual information between time points of the trajectory was strongly influenced by the average movement velocity and the acceleration/deceleration segments of the movement. The entropy analysis revealed structure to the variability of the movement trajectory and outcome that has been masked by the traditional distributional analyses of discrete aiming movements. 相似文献

The minimum variance theory proposes that motor commands are corrupted by signal-dependent noise and smooth trajectories with low noise levels are selected to minimize endpoint error and endpoint variability. The purpose of the study was to determine the contribution of trajectory smoothness to the endpoint accuracy and endpoint variability of rapid multi-joint arm movements. Young and older adults performed arm movements (4 blocks of 25 trials) as fast and as accurately as possible to a target with the right (dominant) arm. Endpoint accuracy and endpoint variability along with trajectory smoothness and error were quantified for each block of trials. Endpoint error and endpoint variance were greater in older adults compared with young adults, but decreased at a similar rate with practice for the two age groups. The greater endpoint error and endpoint variance exhibited by older adults were primarily due to impairments in movement extent control and not movement direction control. The normalized jerk was similar for the two age groups, but was not strongly associated with endpoint error or endpoint variance for either group. However, endpoint variance was strongly associated with endpoint error for both the young and older adults. Finally, trajectory error was similar for both groups and was weakly associated with endpoint error for the older adults. The findings are not consistent with the predictions of the minimum variance theory, but support and extend previous observations that movement trajectories and endpoints are planned independently. 相似文献

A fiberscopic observation of velar movements during speech was made of a patient diagnosed as having apraxia of speech. Repeated utterances of the same word showed a marked variability in terms of the pattern of velar movements accompanied at times by a phonetic change. In spite of such a variability, the general successional pattern of velar gestures for a given phonetic context approximated the normal pattern. During the production of nasal and nonnasal consonants the velum tended to take “neutral” positions. Anticipatory coarticulation was present, but some deviation from normal patterns was occasionally observed. Based on these observations, possible mechanisms responsible for the syndrome called apraxia of speech were discussed. 相似文献

The authors evaluated the characteristics of infants' spontaneous movements by using dynamical systems analysis. Participants were 6 healthy 1-month-old full-term newborn infants (3 males, 3 females). They used a triaxial accelerometer to measure limb acceleration in 3-dimensional space. Acceleration signals were recorded during 200 s from the right wrist when the infant was in an active alert state and lying supine (sampling rate 200 Hz). and was stored in the system's memory. Digitized data were transferred to a PC for subsequent processing with analysis software. The acceleration time series data were analyzed linearly and nonlinearly. Nonlinear time series analysis suggested that the infants' spontaneous movements are characterized by a nonlinear chaotic dynamics with 5 or 6 embedding dimensions. The production of infants'spontaneous movements involves chaotic dynamic systems that are capable of generating voluntary skill movements. 相似文献

In the use of many instruments the operator is required to keep two objects in alignment, when one is continually moving with respect to the other. The pursuit-meter, in various forms, has provided such a task for experimental purposes. Problems connected with target tracking have, in recent years, given an impetus to investigations into the nature of the operator's response under various conditions when faced with such a situation. 相似文献
