Focused principally on an analysis of Ada, the mute heroine of Jane Campion's The Piano , this article shows how post–Jungian animus theory illuminates that character's mysterious personality. In particular, Ann Ulanov's thoughts about animus development are connected with Demaris Wehr's observations concerning the internalization of social oppression in an argument that shows how, notwithstanding she is a woman, Ada is a product of colonial oppression. Her mythological antecedents are also considered, and are particularly marked in that she resembles the handless maiden in Marie–Louise von Franz's analysis of that fairy tale. In this context Ada's ultimate renunciation of her husband is symbolically reinforced by the developing personality of her daughter Flora. The changes in both characters can be seen as implying not only the rebirth of Ada's psyche but also the emergence of a new psychological readiness to throw off the colonial mantle.  相似文献

Beginning around the time of the Sputnik crisis of 1957, a number of specialized, defense-related firms moved to the Washington, D.C. area. Their primary function was vague: they often defined their work as “systems integration”—but that was not well-defined. Journalists, not understanding the nature of this activity, called the firms “Beltway Bandits,” a misnomer since nearly all were located not around the Washington Beltway but rather close by one another in an area known as Tysons Corner, Virginia. Though little understood and by 1997 all but gone as independent companies, these firms laid the foundation for one of the most vibrant and economically successful regions of the country: Tysons Corner. Tysons is now an anchor for Internet activity and probably has more high-technology software activity than anyplace, save Silicon Valley, in the United States. It is also home to one of the most successful retail centers in the northeastern United States. Tysons is a classic “Edge City” in the words of urban geographer Joel Garreau: tremendous commercial vitality yet none of the qualities one associates with a “community.” Tysons Corner has no post office or ZIP code of its own, no political boundary, no subway or railroad station, no library, public school, park, or town square. Yet is is an easily-recognized “place.” This study looks at the area, its origins, and its present status, with a view toward some general comments about the place for such “Edge Cities” in the country’s future.  相似文献

Charles F. Mackenzie was an Anglican archdeacon in the 19th century in the newly formed Diocese of Natal. He was consecrated a missionary bishop for Central Africa in Cape Town in 1861, which was a significant development for the Anglican Church at the time. Mackenzie struggled to read the social landscape, becoming embroiled in colonial conflict. Consequently, congregants, colleagues, and historians have characterized him in markedly different ways, rendering a disputed legacy. This paper brings Mackenzie into conversation with another figure who is not without his own controversy: Martyn Percy. Applying Percy's implicit theological approach provides an important lens with which to view the social complexities, ecclesial conflicts and missional contexts which Mackenzie sought to navigate.  相似文献

This article traces professional and personal influences that helped Virginia Satir to shape her worldview. She was an integrative humanist who included body, mind, emotional, and spiritual processes to transform systems ranging from the molecular to the cosmic. Her theories and techniques offered a wellspring of hope and possibility to individuals as well as large assemblies. The presentation of a case with young, abused children demonstrates her use of self (through physical touch) by sensitively reframing the cycle of violence as an opportunity for safe, cooperative contact.  相似文献

SUMMARY

This article looks at the Tao of Virginia Satir which is exemplified by her apparent effortless manner of facilitating change with respect and congruence. She worked with the ‘rejects’ of the psychiatric community and was successfully able to make changes to their lives by contacting their inner ‘spirit’ while loving them. Her apparently simple and respectful Tao of communication and ability to contact the life force accounted in part for the powerful transformations she made with individuals and large systems.  相似文献

B. H. Slater has argued that there cannot be any truly paraconsistent logics, because it's always more plausible to suppose whatever negation symbol is used in the language is not a real negation, than to accept the paraconsistent reading. In this paper I neither endorse nor dispute Slater's argument concerning negation; instead, my aim is to show that as an argument against paraconsistency, it misses (some of) the target. A important class of paraconsistent logics — the preservationist logics — are not subject to this objection. In addition I show that if we identify logics by means of consequence relations, at least one dialetheic logic can be reinterpreted in preservationist (non-dialetheic) terms. Thus the interest of paraconsistent consequence relations — even those that emerge from dialetheic approaches — does not depend on the tenability of dialetheism. Of course, if dialetheism is defensible, then paraconsistent logic will be required to cope with it. But the existence (and interest) of paraconsistent logics does not depend on a defense of dialetheism.  相似文献

Archdeacon Charles F. Mackenzie ministered in the diocese of Natal in South Africa from 1855 to 1859. The early days of the diocese and the colony of Natal were characterized by conflict both inside and outside the church. The church conflict of Bishop John Colenso is perhaps most infamous. Mackenzie attempted to navigate this space and minister to settlers, soldiers, and Africans alike. This article draws on primary sources to explore the life and times of Mackenzie and argues that despite Mackenzie's remarkable story, the inseparability of coloniality from the missionary endeavour, racism, and the civilizing narrative was inescapable. Racism has evolved and is still a challenge for many churches.  相似文献
