The aim of the present paper is to show that Hegel’s concept of personal respect is of great interest to contemporary Critical
Theory. The author first analyzes this notion as it appears in the Philosophy of Right and then offers a new interpretation of the conceptual relation between personal respect and the institutions of (private)
property and (capitalist) markets. In doing so, he shows why Hegel’s concept of personal respect allows us to understand markets
as possible institutionalizations of this kind of recognition, and why it is compatible with a critique of neoliberal capitalism.
He argues that due to these features Hegel’s notion of personal respect is of great interest to theoreticians within the tradition
of critical theory.

This article identifies already existing theoretical and methodological commonalities between evolutionary biology and phenomenology,
concentrating specifically on their common pursuit of origins. It identifies in passing theoretical support from evolutionary
biology for present-day concerns in philosophy, singling out Sartre’s conception of fraternity as an example. It anchors its
analysis of the common pursuit of origins in Husserl’s consistent recognition of the grounding significance of Nature and
in his consistent recognition of animate forms of life other than human. It enumerates and exemplifies five basic errors of
continental philosophers with respect to Nature, errors testifying to a philosophical fundamentalism that distorts the intricate
interconnections and relationships of Nature in favor of a preferred knowledge rooted in ontological reductionism. It shows
that to discover and appreciate the common ground, one must indeed study “the things themselves.”

We consider connections between number sense—the ability to judge number—and the interpretation of natural language quantifiers.
In particular, we present empirical evidence concerning the neuroanatomical underpinnings of number sense and quantifier interpretation.
We show, further, that impairment of number sense in patients can result in the impairment of the ability to interpret sentences
containing quantifiers. This result demonstrates that number sense supports some aspects of the language faculty.

This article considers the validity and strength of Richard Rorty’s pragmatist theory of interpretation in the light of two
ethical issues related to literature and interpretation. Rorty’s theory is rejected on two grounds. First, it is argued that
his unrestrained account of interpretation is incompatible with the distinctive moral concerns that have been seen to restrict
the scope and nature of valid approaches to artworks. The second part of the paper claims that there is no indispensable relationship
between supporting Rorty’s pragmatist theory of interpretation and the important place that is attached to literature in the
liberal society outlined by him. A reading of Donald Davidson’s texts on literary language and interpretation implies that
an intentionalist theory of interpretation can accommodate those features that Rorty values in literature as well.

Call this fictional coreference. It is a constraint on an adequate theory of empty names that it provide a satisfactory account of fictional coreference.
The main claim of this paper is that the pretense theory of empty names does not respect this constraint.

Relatively little is known about the factor structure of disruptive behavior among preadolescent girls. The present study
reports on exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses of disruptive girl behavior over four successive data waves as rated
by parents and teachers in a large, representative community sample of girls (N = 2,451). Five factors were identified from parent ratings (oppositional behavior/conduct problems, inattention, hyperactivity/impulsivity,
relational aggression, and callous-unemotional behaviors), and four factors were identified derived from teacher ratings (oppositional
behavior/conduct problems/callous-unemotional behaviors, inattention, hyperactivityimpulsivity, and relational aggression).
There was a high degree of consistency of items loading on equivalent factors across parent and teacher ratings. Year-to-year
stability of factors between ages five and 12 was high for parent ratings (ICC = 0.70 to 0.88), and slightly lower for teacher
ratings (ICC = 0.56 to 0.83). These findings are discussed in terms of possible adjustment to the criteria for children's
disruptive behavior disorders found in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders.

This paper addresses a problem that arises when it comes to inferring deterministic causal chains from pertinent empirical
data. It will be shown that to every deterministic chain there exists an empirically equivalent common cause structure. Thus,
our overall conviction that deterministic chains are one of the most ubiquitous (macroscopic) causal structures is underdetermined
by empirical data. It will be argued that even though the chain and its associated common cause model are empirically equivalent
there exists an important asymmetry between the two models with respect to model expansions. This asymmetry might constitute
a basis on which to disambiguate corresponding causal inferences on non-empirical grounds.

I have argued that to say qualia are epiphenomenal is to say a world without qualia would be physically identical to a world
with qualia. Dan Cavedon-Taylor has offered an alternative interpretation of the commitments of qualia epiphenomenalism according
to which qualia cause beliefs and those beliefs can and do cause changes to the physical world. I argue that neither of these
options works for the qualia epiphenomenalist and thus that theory faces far more serious difficulties than has previously
been recognized.

The development of reflex theory in its Pavlovian interpretation had significant resonance in a wide range of academic research
areas. Its impact on the so-called humanities was, perhaps, no less than the effect it had in medical science. The idea of
the conditioned reflex suggesting a physiological explanation of behaviour patterns received a particularly warm welcome in
philosophy and psychology as it provided a scientifically-based tool for a conceptual u-turn towards objectivism. This article
looks into the ways these ideas contributed to the formation of the Soviet language theory, namely, to the sociological interpretation
of language development and speech production presented in the pioneering works of Sergej M. Dobrogaev (1873–1952).

I argue that John Mackie’s treatment of practical reason is both attractive and unjustly neglected. In particular, I argue
that it is importantly different from, and much more plausible than, the kind of instrumentalist approach famously articulated
by Bernard Williams. This matters for the interpretation of the arguments for Mackie’s most famous thesis: moral scepticism,
the claim that there are no objective values. Richard Joyce has recently defended a version or variant of moral scepticism
by invoking an instrumentalist theory like Williams’. I argue that this is a serious strategic mistake.
