Desperately Seeking Approval: The Importance of Distinguishing Between Approval and Recognition

Victoria Davion confuses seeking approval with the desire for recognition of and respect for one's difference. Ironically, when she asserts that the desire to please others provides an incentive to do well (and thus constitutes a positive aspect of competition) Davion undermines her argument that competition enhances one's sense of self. Rather than enhancing one's sense of self, striving to win approval from others sabotages one's ability to rely on her own judgment and take moral responsibility for herself.

Job Seeking Among Retirees Seeking Bridge Employment

Using a sample of recent retirees, the study described here sought to test the general propositions of the Wanberg, Watt, and Rumsey (1996) model by (a) including specific variables that are likely to be relevant to older adults seeking work after retirement (bridge employment) and (b) integrating more recent variable groups (e.g., situational constraints) suggested by recent research (e.g., Wanberg, Kanfer, & Rotundo (1999) and Kanfer, Wanberg, & Kantrowitz (2001) . Generally, the results support the efficacy of the Wanberg et al. model to predict job seeking among this group. Biographical variables such as older worker job search constraints, self-evaluations (e.g., job seeking self-efficacy), and motive/social variables (e.g., social support) were related to job seeking. Some of these, however, were not in the expected direction. Similarities and differences between "regular" job seeking and bridge employment job seeking are discussed.     

Desperately seeking perfection: Christian discipleship and medical genetics.

The question of what, if anything, Christian theology as theology might contribute to ethical debates about appropriate uses of medical genetics has often been ignored. The answer is complex, and the author argues it is best characterized by an explanation of the analogous aspirations of the two: both have as their goal the perfection of the human being, both assert that the present disposition of the human body is on a fundamental level more often than not other than it ought to be, and both aspire to transform the present state of the body toward a future state in which present imperfections no longer exist. Given these analogous concerns, it would seem that one of the primary moral contributions that Christianity can make to debates about medical genetics is to ask whether and to what extent the Christian vision of embodied human perfection is compatible with the vision of perfection offered by the sciences pertaining to medical genetics. The author pursues a discussion of this analogy and its implications in this essay.

Seeking Roots

One of the best-selling Scottish books of 1989, The Root of the Matter ( Mainstream Publishing, Edinburgh, £9.95 ) recalls the earlier part of the life of its author, Anthony Ross OP, a convert from Presbyterianism who ended up as a Dominican priest widely known in Scotland for his work with young people, and who was elected Rector of Edinburgh University and then Prior Provincial of the English Dominican Province. Allan White OP, who was one of the first two Dominicans since the Reformation to take a degree in Scotland and for six years was Superior of the Dominican Community in Edinburgh, here puts the story of Anthony Ross in the context of a wider story.     

Seeking forgiveness

Conclusion There is no intention in this paper of disputing that all sin is against God: that is the meaning of the term. But this implies neither that the outcroppings of one's sinfulness do not frequently harm one's neighbor, nor that in such instances confession should still be to God alone. It has been maintained that at times it is appropriate, and even necessary, both for the sake of the minister and for the parishioner, that a minister should seek the forgiveness of someone he has wronged.The problems involved in appraising the appropriateness or otherwise of such behavior in a given case do not appear to be different in quality or degree from other ethical decisions. It is, indeed, probable that many arguments against the appropriateness of this step are in fact rationalizations to cover the felt inability to take such a step.Protestants make general confessions in public worship, and presumably also private confession to God. The issue in question is whether it is not also desirable that at times they undertake the additional, precise, and discriminating confession to those they have wronged, and seek their forgiveness.Despite the preliminary nature of the argument and its illustrative material, and the inability to demonstrate this as the significant variable in positive results following such behavior, it is held that a strong case can be made for it on biblical, pastoral, and psychodynamic grounds. In view of its potential importance in the ministry of reconciliation it is deserving of serious attention and research.

Mother Mary Ann Wright

The role of African-American women in community service and social activism is well known. In this paper, the researcher provides a case study of a present-day African-American social activist and makes comparisons with the community service experiences of other African-American women in the past. Mother Mary Ann Wright describes herself as a servant of God. As with other African-American women, it is God who provides her identity and sense of purpose. Likewise, because she serves God, she has status in her community. Mother Wright is an exceptional woman-born in abject poverty, having pulled herself up by her bootstraps-all the while listening to the voice of God, she has founded missions throughout the world and is best known for her work in feeding the hungry in the parks of Oakland, California. She gives all credit for her accomplishments to God. However unique and outstanding, Mother Wright also epitomizes a long tradition of African-American women whose spirituality directed their service to their fellow human beings. The list is long and the variety of these women is great-the well educated leaders as well as the ordinary-Pauli Murray, Mary McLeod Bethune, Sojourner Truth, Harriet Tubman, and thousands of other African-American women have dedicated their lives to uplifting the race and improving the human condition. The story of Mother Wright, a special and exceptional women in her own right, nevertheless confirms the continuation of the tradition of spirituality and public service among African-American women.

Help Seeking: Effects of Visibility of Task Performance and Seeking Help

This study manipulated independently whether help seeking and task performance were public or private, since in public settings persons may lose esteem by seeking help or by demonstrating unsuccessful performance. Subjects were given false feedback that they were doing poorly on a task involving judging levels of neuroticism in others, and were given all opportunity to seek help by consulting a set of guidelines. The main result was an interaction with help seeking most likely when task performance was public and help seeking was private.
