This study examined the effects of objects, with and without social stimulus properties, on the behavior of children who are severely retarded, and compared such effects with behavior under conditions of minimal stimulation. It was found that these children approach, contact, grasp and interact significantly less often with objects which possess social stimulus properties than with objects which possess no social qualities. These results are discussed in relation to the ongoing debate on the importance of relationships in the reduction of challenging behavior. It is concluded that while having access to close-bonded relationships may be necessary for the reduction of challenging behavior, in some cases at least, it may not be sufficient.  相似文献

The secondary qualities are those qualities of objects that bear a certain relation to our sensory powers: roughly, they are those qualities that we can readily detect only through a certain distinctive phenomenal experience. Contrary to what is sometimes supposed, there is nothing about the world itself (independent of our minds) that determines the distinction between primary and secondary qualities. Instead, a theory of the secondary qualities must be grounded in facts about how we conceive of these qualities, and ultimately in facts about human perception.  相似文献

Previous research has suggested that visual short-term memory has a fixed capacity of about four objects. However, we found that capacity varied substantially across the five stimulus classes we examined, ranging from 1.6 for shaded cubes to 4.4 for colors (estimated using a change detection task). We also estimated the information load per item in each class, using visual search rate. The changes we measured in memory capacity across classes were almost exactly mirrored by changes in the opposite direction in visual search rate (r2=.992 between search rate and the reciprocal of memory capacity). The greater the information load of each item in a stimulus class (as indicated by a slower search rate), the fewer items from that class one can hold in memory. Extrapolating this linear relationship reveals that there is also an upper bound on capacity of approximately four or five objects. Thus, both the visual information load and number of objects impose capacity limits on visual short-term memory.  相似文献

In two experiments, we test predictions regarding processing advantages/disadvantages for natural objects and artefacts in visual object recognition. Varying three important parameters—degree of perceptual differentiation, stimulus format, and stimulus exposure duration—we show how different category-effects can be provoked in normal subjects on the same task. We interpret the results in light of the Pre-semantic Account of Category Effects (PACE; Gerlach, 2009), and conclude that category-effects do not reflect absolute processing differences between categories. Rather, category-effects are products of common operations which are differentially affected by the structural similarity among objects (with natural objects being more structurally similar than artefacts). The potentially most important aspect of the present study is the demonstration that category-effects are very context dependent; an aspect which has been neglected in earlier literature on category-specificity. PACE provides a useful framework in this respect, as it specifies how category-effects are influenced by changes in task and stimulus characteristics.  相似文献

Recently, researchers have been investigating the effects of kinematics stimulus properties on pattern perception and recognition. However, the stimulus properties that are used to discriminate animate from inanimate objects have received relatively little attention. Earlier research has indicated that the external movement of artificially generated objects is perceived as animate by observers of all ages. In this investigation, children in Grades 1,4, and 7 and university adults were asked to describe what they saw after viewing computer-generated displays of two circular objects that exhibited variations of external and internal movement. We predicted that observers would incorporate and integrate the salient kinematic properties of the objects in a display into a coherent narrative and that their ability to achieve matches among the properties of objects in a display and the properties of objects described in the narrative would increase with age. Moreover, because of their relative insensitivity to the actual properties of objects in the display, we predicted that younger observers would make more animate attributions for nonmoving objects and fewer animate attributions for moving objects than would older observers. We investigated the role of transparency, perceptual grouping, and presentation time on perceived lightness. Both transparency and perceptual grouping have been found to result in assimilation effects, but only for ambiguous stimulus displays and with specific attentional instructions. By varying the presentation times of displays with two partly overlapping transparent E-shaped objects, we measured assimilation in unambiguous stimulus displays and without specific attentional instructions. The task was to judge which of two simultaneously presented E-shaped objects was darker. With unrestrained presentation times, if a transparency interpretation was possible, assimilation was not found. Inhibiting a transparency interpretation by occluding the local junctions between the two E-shaped objects, did lead to assimilation. With short presentation times, if a transparency interpretation was possible, assimilation was now also found. Thus, we conclude that, although transparency appears to enhance assimilation, with unambiguous stimulus displays and without specific attentional instructions, perceptual grouping is more important for assimilation to occur.  相似文献

Chinchillas and pigeons were used as subjects in separate experiments to study interactions among stimulus and response characteristics in discrimination learning. Both the stimuli and the responses could differ with respect to their "quality" and their "location." Bright versus dim lights and upper versus lower lights served as the stimulus qualities and stimulus locations for the chinchillas, respectively. Red versus green lights and upper versus lower lights served as the stimulus qualities and stimulus locations for the pigeons, respectively. Respond versus no-respond and respond-left versus respond-right served as the response qualities and response locations, for both species, respectively. In both experiments, response-quality performance was superior when the discriminative stimuli differed in quality than when they differed in location, whereas response-location performance was superior when the discriminative stimuli differed in location than when they differed in quality. These results were interpreted within the framework provided by a general law of learning, that is, the "quality-location hypothesis."  相似文献

Several previous studies have suggested that we may attend only a fixed number of 'objects' at a time. However, whereas findings from two-target experiments suggest that we can attend only one object at a time, other results from object-tracking and enumeration paradigms point instead to a four-object limit. Here, we note that in these previous studies the number of objects covaried with the overall size and complexity of the stimulus, such that apparent one-object or four-object limits in those tasks may reflect changes in the complexity of attended stimuli, rather than the number of objects per se. Accordingly, in the current experiments we employ stimuli in which the number of objects varies, while overall size and complexity are held constant. Using these refined measures of object-based effects, we find no evidence for a one-object or four-object limit on attention. Indeed, we conclude that the number of attended objects does not affect how efficiently we can attend a given stimulus. We propose and test an alternative approach to object-based attention limitations based on within-object and between-object feature-binding mechanisms in human vision.  相似文献

Manipulating stimulus spacing, stimulus frequency, or stimulus range usually affects intensity judgments. In six experiments, I investigated the locus of analogues of these contextual effects in a “difference” estimation task. When all stimuli elicited the same taste quality, stimulus distribution affected the scale values only when water was included in the stimulus set (Experiments 1–3). When the subjective ranges of two taste qualities were manipulated, different scale values were obtained for the separate qualities in the two conditions (Experiment 4). Manipulation of the expected response distribution did not affect the scale values or the responses (Experiments 5–6). It is concluded that shifts in stimulus distributions or stimulus ranges result in shifts in subjective scale values. The contextual effects can be interpreted as relative shifts of a number of gustatory continua, with water lying on a separate continuum. Proposed is a model for context-dependent judgments, consisting of four stages: stimulus classification, stimulus placement, continuum placement, and continuum projection.  相似文献

Traditional theories locate color in primary qualities of objects, indispositional properties of objects, in visual fields, or nowhere. Incontrast, we argue that color is located in properties of light. Morespecifically, light is red iff there is a property P of the lightthat typically interacts with normal human perceivers to give thesensation of red. This is an error theory, because objects and visualfields that appear red are not really red, since they lack theproperties that make light red. In the real-world, the retinal projection of an object changes as we move, or as a moving object passes in front of us. We have to recognise objects, despite such retinal-projection changes. Many studies have shown that the time required to identify objects after a change in the retinal projection is longer than when there is no retinal-projection change. This recognition cost is referred to as the view-dependent effect. Previous researchers have studied the view-dependent effect while disregarding the predictability of retinal-projection changes. Here, we demonstrate that there is no view-dependent effect when the predictability is introduced, in the case where participants track moving objects by head-turning or eye-movement in a virtual environment. Violation of the predictability, such as an unpredictable retinal-projection change or a movement of the first stimulus that was inconsistent with a subsequent retinal-projection change, caused a view-dependent effect. Moreover, we found that extraretinal information such as head-turning or eye-movement was unnecessary for view-independent recognition. These results indicate that humans can extrapolate to the tested view from the studied view in a view-independent way when retinal-projection change is predictable from the visual stimulus.  相似文献

When a visual stimulus is flashed at a given location the moment a second moving stimulus arrives at the same location, observers report the flashed stimulus as spatially lagging behind the moving stimulus (the flash-lag effect). The authors investigated whether the global configuration (perceptual organization) of the moving stimulus influences the magnitude of the flash-lag effect. The results indicate that a flash presented near the leading portion of a moving stimulus lags significantly more than a flash presented near the trailing portion. This result also holds for objects consisting of several elements that group to form a unitary percept of an object in motion. The present study demonstrates a novel interaction between the global configuration of moving objects and the representation of their spatial position and may provide a new and useful tool for the study of perceptual organization.  相似文献

A pure auditory tone has a range of multimodal qualities that are determined by its pitch. A reaction-time task was used to demonstrate that subjects respond immediately and automatically to these qualities. Subjects were required to press one of two keys depending on which word, from a limited set, appeared on a microcomputer screen. The words were antonyms that represented multimodal stimulus qualities, and they were assigned to alternative responses so that the two words that shared the same response were correlated in the same way with pitch. As an incidental stimulus, either a 50 Hz tone or a 5500 Hz tone accompanied the presentation of each word. Subjects were found to respond more slowly when the multimodal qualities of the tone were incongruent with the qualities represented by the test word. When the stimulus-response mapping rules were changed, however, the Stroop effect did not occur; suggesting that a polarised semantic code of the incidental tone, that embraces its multimodal features, accesses the same semantic register as the equivalent code for the test word itself.  相似文献

Language deficient, autistic children were trained to use the prepositions "in" and "on". Three subjects were exposed to conditions of training that differed in the method of employment of stimulus objects used to train prepositional usage. Two subjects were trained first with "ambiguous" stimuli, that is, the same stimulus objects were used for training both prepositions. The two subjects were then switched to a training condition with "non-ambiguous" stimulus objects, that is, objects used for training "in" were different than those used for training "on". The two subjects were then switched to the ambiguous stimulus condition and finally returned again to training with non-ambiguous stimuli (four conditions). A third subject began with training on non-ambiguous stimuli, was switched to an ambiguous condition and was then switched back to non-ambiguous stimuli (three conditions). The results for two of the three subjects indicated that accurate usage of the two prepositions was obtained only under training conditions with non-ambiguous stimuli. Results for the third subject suggested that initial training with non-ambiguous stimuli might enhance subsequent accurate responding with ambiguous stimuli.  相似文献

During visual search, observers hold in mind a search template, which they match against the stimulus. To characterize the content of this template, we trained observers to discriminate a set of artificial objects at an individual level and at a category level. The observers then searched for the objects on backgrounds that camouflaged the features that defined either the object’s identity or the object’s category. Each search stimulus was preceded by the target’s individual name, its category name, or an uninformative cue. The observers’ task was to locate the target, which was always present and always the only figure in the stimulus. The results showed that name cues slowed search when the features associated with the name were camouflaged. Apparently, the observers required a match between their mental representation of the target and the stimulus, even though this was unnecessary for the task. Moreover, this match involved all distinctive features of the target, not just the features necessary for a definitive identification. We conclude that visual search for a specific target involves a verification process that is performed automatically on all of the target’s distinctive features.  相似文献

In a preliminary experiment subjects were asked to explore three wooden knobs of different sizes and to rate each one on a series of 7-point scales. The results confirmed that an object may possess a number of multimodal qualities that are contingent on its haptic size. The pattern of intercorrelations between the qualities was consistent with the pattern that is observed when subjects respond to pure auditory tones varying in pitch. For example, small (high-pitched) sounds, like small objects, are judged to be sharp, thin, light, weak, fast, tense, and bright. The main experiments used a paradigm based on the Stroop interference effect. Subjects were required to press one of two keys as quickly as possible depending on which of four possible words appeared in the centre of the screen. A 50 Hz or a 5500 Hz tone accompanied each test word, and subjects responded on two keys that differed in size. Subjects were found to respond more slowly when either the pitch of the incidental sound or the size of the key on which they responded was incongruent with the multimodal features represented by the test word. The results confirm that people are automatically and immediately sensitive to the multimodal features of a stimulus when direct sensory evidence for the features is absent.  相似文献

Experimental evidence has shown that the time taken to recognize objects is often dependent on stimulus orientation in the image plane. This effect has been taken as evidence that recognition is mediated by orientation-specific stored representations of object shapes. However, the factors that determine the orientation specificity of these representations remain unclear. This issue is examined using a word-picture verification paradigm in which subjects identified line drawings of common mono- and polyoriented objects at different orientations. A detailed analysis of the results showed that, in contrast to mono-oriented objects, the recognition of polyoriented objects is not dependent on stimulus orientation. This interaction provides a further constraint on hypotheses about the factors that determine the apparent orientation specificity of stored shape representations. In particular, they support previous proposals that objects are encoded in stored representations at familiar stimulus orientations.  相似文献

Five experiments sought to test the constant-ratio rule (CRR) with single dimensional ensembles composed of 2, 4, or 8 stimulus objects. Each S attempted to identify stimuli which varied in weight or in visual size or brightness. The results demonstrated: (a) The CRR predicts equally well the response proportions of single dimensional visual, kinesthetic, and auditory stimulus ensembles, but less well than those for multidimensional auditory stimuli. (b) Better predictions are obtained with four than with two stimulus objects.(c) The CRR is sensitive to variations in the spacing and range of the stimulus ensembles and to practice on the task. It is concluded that the rule tends to fail whenever stimulus conditions elicit differential amounts of stimulus and response confusion.  相似文献

Items that are blocked by category are typically more memorable than unblocked items. We examined the blocking effect with different types of stimuli. In Experiment 1, subjects memorized either actual objects or the printed names of those objects. Free recall was enhanced significantly by blocking only in the printed name condition. In Experiment 2, it was demonstrated that these relationships occurred whether or not verbal labels are supplied for the stimulus items. The difference in the impact of blocking on free recall was hypothesized to reflect differences in the visual detail that characterized the stimulus items in the object and printed name conditions. To test this hypothesis, Experiment 3 was conducted, using four sets of stimulus items graded in visual detail. These were a set of objects, photographs of the objects, line drawings of the objects, and printed names of the objects. The visual detail hypothesis was supported.  相似文献
