Optical motions and gradients of retinal flow have been assumed to be an important source of information for the perception of spatial layout. In the case of lateral parallax, however, the complicating effects of smooth eye movements on retinal flow fields and the known insensitivity of the visual system to absolute motion suggest that optical motions alone cannot provide the basis for accurate perception of the direction (sign) of depth relations. At most they can provide information for "unsigned" depth. Results of two experiments support the view that differential optical motions result in a strong impression of separation of objects in depth, but that the determination of near/far relations normally depends on other sources of information.  相似文献

Summary The geometrical optics of approach events is delineated. It is shown that optical magnification provides information about distance and time until collision. An experiment is described in which two objects - white styropor® spheres 10 cm in diameter, seen against a white plaster wall - were moved simultaneously at equal, constant speed along straight, converging paths at eye level towards a human observer and towards a common, virtual point of collision which either coincided with the observer's station point or was placed in front of, or behind, that point. Approach events differed with regard to trajectories, distances, velocities, and times-to-collision involved. Events were observed monocularly fixating and binocularly non-fixating, without head movements. The objects always stopped before colliding, and subjects had to respond to the virtual collisions. Most responses were too early, especially for impending collisions at, or behind the observers' station point. Responses for impending collisions in front of the observers tended to be too late, especially for larger total amounts of optical magnification and higher velocities, which together imply shorter times-to-collision. Relative errors were comparatively larger for very short and very long times-to-collision throughout, where events of the first kind were overshot, the latter ones undershot. Results are interpreted with reference to biological theories and the constraints imposed by geometrical optics. Special attention is focused on the issue of unavoidable, necessary confounding of variables in time-to-collision studies.  相似文献

To what degree are young infants able to perceive differential shadowing and to what degree are they able to utilize this stimulus parameter as information about depth? Two habituation experiments were performed. In Experiment 1, a group of 5-month-old infants were habituated to a low frequency, vertical, and approximately sinusoidal luminance grating superimposed on a flat colored surface. This display induced stable 3-D perception in adult subjects. After habituation, the infants viewed two test displays at alternating trials. One was made up of real half cylinders matching the light distribution of the habituation display and the other was made up of a square wave grating of the same spatial frequency as in the habituation one. Adults perceived the latter display as flat. Results showed that both test displays were treated as new ones by the infants habituated to the sinusoidal grating. Experiment 2 was identical to Experiment 1, except that the subjects were 3 1/2-month-old. These infants treated the half cylinders as familiar and the square wave grating as new. The results indicate that infants at both age levels (3 1/2 and 5 months of age) were sensitive to the difference between sharp and gradual change in luminance which is a prerequisite for perceiving form from luminance. However, neither age group seemed to utilize gradual change in luminance as information about space.  相似文献

The present paper reports three investigations of new kinetic information for transparent depth using computer-generated dot patterns. An initial demonstration showed that separation in depth could be obtained by translating rectangular lattices of dots through one another like intersecting columns of marching soldiers. The first two experiments showed that diagonal interactions between lattices created significantly stronger separation than did horizontal or vertical interactions (horizontal was, in turn, stronger than vertical) and that patterns which translated through one another without any of the individual elements intersecting were better separated than those whose rows or columns intersected in register. The third experiment showed that random patterns interacting in any direction created the strongest separations of all the patterns observed. Results were taken to indicate that a unified theory of depth information, developed in the context of James Gibson’s ecological optics, must incorporate both spatial and kinetic structure in its specification of necessary and sufficient stimulus conditions.  相似文献

Clopton's recent article (1978) in JPA calls attention to methodological problems in the construction of special inventories from the MMPI pool, but overlooks the major problem. It stems from the theoretical correlation between psychopathology and the construct to be measured by the special inventory. This contamination renders the usual validity demonstration questionable. It is pointed out that there is a good number of special inventories that are not subject to the methodological problems noted by Clopton.  相似文献

This brief note has two parts. First, it presents an analysis of the ability of English agrammatic patients to assign the thematic roles of agent, instrument, theme, and locative to noun phrases in active and passive sentences and prepositional phrases. Data regarding this ability have been presented by Schwartz, Saffran, and Marin (Brain and Language, 10, 149-262 (1980) regarding comprehension, and by Saffran, Schwartz, and Marin (Brain and Language, 10, 263-280 (1980) regarding production. These authors claim their data show that English agrammatic aphasics do not map "word order" onto thematic information. However, a very simple set of principles accounts for all their results, including results which are discrepant in their treatment, but requires that English agrammatics assign thematic roles to NPs in part by virtue of the position of an NP in a sentence or a phrase. In the second part of this note, several issues raised by this re-analysis are briefly discussed.  相似文献

Although IP’s look similar to colored multi-graphs (MG’s), the two objects are constructed in fundamentally different ways. IP’s are constructed using the global concept of history, whereas graphs are constructed using the local concept of edges. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for each theory to be captured by the other. We find that the necessary and sufficient condition for IP theory to be captured by MG theory, which we call SE, excludes relevant game situations. Hence, we conclude that IP theory remains a vital tool and cannot be replaced by MG theory.  相似文献

The purpose of this note is twofold: (a) to present the formula for the item information function (IIF) in any direction for the Multidimensional 3-Parameter Logistic (M3-PL) model and (b) to give the equation for the location of maximum item information (θmax) in the direction of the item discrimination vector. When computer-generated objects approached the viewpoint in midair, a large far object appeared to be nearer than a small near object and appeared to hit the viewpoint before the small object, which was specified by time-to-contact information to arrive sooner. These judgements were consistent with relative size and occurred even when motion-based information was potentially above threshold. The effects of relative size persisted with higher resolution animated films of approaching objects, were weakened by ground-intercept information, and were not as robust with laterally translating objects. Although it is often asserted that the kinds of information that have traditionally been called static depth cues are superseded by motion-based depth information, this article attempts to show that the reverse also can occur in distance perception, as has been shown in form perception.  相似文献
