We report a fascinating phenomenon that emerges when a surface is viewed through a tube held close to one eye, with the other eye open. The disk-shaped area seen through the tube looks strikingly brighter and, when viewed on a textured background, also of higher spatial contrast than the same surface area viewed without a tube. The effect is reminiscent of a spotlight illuminating the area under consideration. We call this the 'tube effect'. The tube effect is one of the strongest contrast illusions known to us. It requires a matching luminance that is twice as high as the reference luminance seen through the tube. Brightness ratings increase linearly with the log of the background luminance. The effect (i) produces a dark afterimage, (ii) reverses in polarity with low ambient illumination, (iii) assumes the complementary colour of the illuminant, and (iv) persists with fully dilated pupils. Potential explanations include simultaneous contrast (due to the penumbra and dark inner walls of the tube) and veiling of the surround (due to local adaptation and a lower gain factor).  相似文献

At low spatial frequencies, the perceived brightness of the light phase of a stationary square-wave grating is greater than the brightness of a solid field of equal physical luminance. That increase in the perceived brightness of a grating at low spatial frequencies is analogous to the brightness enhancement observed in a flickering light at low temporal frequencies. At or above the critical spatial frequency—the visual resolution threshold—the brightness of a grating is determined by its space-average luminance, just as the brightness of a flickering light at or above the critical flicker frequency is determined by its time-average luminance in accordance with Talbot’s law. Thus, Talbot’s law applies in the spatial as well as the temporal domain. The present study adds to the evidence that temporal and spatial frequency play analogous roles in some aspects of brightness vision.  相似文献

The productivity measurement and enhancement system: a meta-analysis   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Meta-analytic procedures were used to examine data from 83 field studies of the Productivity Measurement and Enhancement System (ProMES). The article expands the evidence on effectiveness of the intervention, examines where it has been successful, and explores moderators related to its success. Four research questions were explored and results indicate that (a) ProMES results in large improvements in productivity; (b) these effects last over time, in some cases years; (c) the intervention results in productivity improvements in many different types of settings (i.e., type of organization, type of work, type of worker, country); and (d) moderator variables are related to the degree of productivity improvement. These moderator variables include how closely the study followed the original ProMES methodology, the quality of feedback given, whether changes were made in the feedback system, the degree of interdependence of the work group, and centralization of the organization. Implications based on these findings are discussed for future use of this intervention, and the system is discussed as an example for evidence-based management.  相似文献

Using a method of direct magnitude estimation, the exponent of the brightness power function was determined under dark and light adaptation at luminance levels well above threshold. The exponent was estimated for functions describing the brightness of stimuli presented at the fovea and the following peripheral retinal loci: 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50 deg nasally eccentric to the fovea along the horizontal meridian of the right eye. The exponent for a 1-sec flash was found to be approximately .33 at the fovea and increased slightly with increasing retinal eccentricity. The effect of adaptation on the brightness exponent was not so large when the target luminance was set well above threshold.  相似文献

Pairs of brightness functions were generated by magnitude estimation, one pair for each of three flash durations (0.5,1.0, and 3.0 sec). Each pair comprised a function obtained with an artificial pupil and a function obtained with the uncontrolled natural pupil. The pupil turned out to have little or no effect on the form and slope of the power functions for brightness, even when flash duration was as long as 3.0 sec.  相似文献

Objective: Based on the Limited Capacity Model of Motivated Mediated Message Processing, this study explored the effects of smoking cues in antismoking Public Service Announcements (PSAs) on message processing among intermittent/light smokers and nonsmokers.

Method: A 2 (smoking cues: present vs. absent) × 2 (smoking status: smokers vs. nonsmokers) mixed experimental design was conducted. Self-report measures and two physiological measures including skin conductance and heart rate were examined.

Results: Messages with smoking cues generated higher levels of arousal (F = 4.57, p = .04), attention (F = 2.51, p = .04), positive message evaluation (F = 28.70, p < .001) and less intent to smoke (F = 26.60, p < .001). Intermittent and light smokers had much stronger reactions to messages containing tobacco-related visuals, including arousal (F = 4.10, p = .04), perceived ad effectiveness (F = 9.24, p = .03) and intent to smoke (F = 22.98, p < .001).

Implication: The antismoking arguments may have suppressed cue-induced smoking urges, which dampened negative persuasion outcomes. Limitations included the restricted generalisability and the focus on short-term effect. Future research may use a random sample of PSAs with a general population.  相似文献

A dozen observers matched numbers to the apparent brightness of a target viewed by one eye or by both eyes. Brightness grew as a power function of luminance, and the functions were practically identical for the two modes of viewing. Throughout its course, the obtained binocular function tended to fall about a decibel above the monocular function. This small degree of binocular summation, of the order of a jnd, mayor may not be significant.  相似文献

Using both the method of paired comparisons and the method of constant stimuli, degree of brightness contrast was determined for two cats. Brightness contrast varied with relative luminance of various parts of the stimulus configuration in a manner comparable to that found in human Ss; brightness constancy was not obtained. The data indicate a fixed, nonadaptive basic visual process rather than a cognitive or adaptive perceptual constancy.  相似文献

Signal detection methods for measurement of utility in animals   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0       下载免费PDF全文
Analytic methods of signal detection theory were employed to assess the utility of reinforcers. Four pigeons were trained to detect the presence or absence of a stimulus by pecking one of two side keys in a trial-by-trial choice paradigm. The relative rate of positive reinforcement for correct choices was varied to offset the biasing effects of electric shock for incorrect right side-key choices. The effects of relative rate of reinforcement on bias were similar at all shock intensities even though the subjects' sensitivity changed during the course of the experiment. The relative rate of reinforcement required to produce equal bias was calculated and plotted against shock intensity to generate utility functions. The relative rate of reinforcement necessary to offset the bias induced by shock was an increasing function of shock intensity.  相似文献
