An Absent Father and His Son

Abstract

This paper will present some of the more recent literature and theories related to the role the father plays in the development of boys. Then, it will attempt to integrate this theory into the ongoing treatment of a latency age boy, whose father left his home at the age of four. Further, it emphasizes the value of persistently addressing the issue of the absent father as it presents itself in the treatment and transference of such a boy, often in the face of severe acting out, absolute denial, and deep desire to repress.

Conversations with My Father

ABSTRACT

This article provides a brief review of the literature describing successful aging life tasks, such as reminiscence, meaning-making, and forming substantive connections. Using Relational-Cultural Theory as a base, the article addresses the need for connection and ways that connections can be developed and sustained in later life. Through a personal account, the authors also illustrate how grown children can use music to connect with their parents. Finally, the authors adapt A Musical Chronology and the Emerging Life Song, an intervention that uses music and memories, for use with older adults.     

A Lesson from My Father

Simple acts can heal. And God is present in those simple and humble acts. The following is a true story that illustrates these truths, told from the perspective of eyewitness, son, and physician.

中国传统思想特别是儒家思想诠释方面 ,普遍主义与特殊主义两种立场之间的冲突始终存在 ,而从八十年代以来国际学坛的走向来看 ,以新儒家为代表的普遍主义的诠释方法和立场 ,明显地占了上风。普遍主义的诠释体现了一种将儒家思想哲学化、形式化 ,使之在比较完全的意义上摆脱历史因素的纠缠的努力。此种努力又主要表现为两个方面 :一是强调“道统”的超越性品格 ,认为儒家思想及其发展与具体的历史情境和社会结构之间并没有必然的、不可分割的联系 ;二是否认儒家思想中包含着某种以血缘差等为基础的特殊主义伦理学 ,强调“仁者爱人”的普遍性…     

“父子相为隐”与亲属间举证——亲情、法律、正义的伦理中道问题

学界有人认为,孔子"父为子隐、子为父隐"的主张是现代人徇私枉法、任人唯亲等权力腐败行为的思想根源。这一观点不仅幻想了古代文本与现实不义的逻辑关系与因果关联,而且对孔子"相为隐"主张进行了望文生义之严重误读。孔子的"父子相为隐"是指当事人有不当行为时其亲属选择沉默而不去检举告发也当被谅解,"隐"指不显不见、不作为的"知而不言",非指积极作为的窝藏、藏匿等。孔子称"父子相为隐,直在其中矣"并非鼓吹作伪证或鼓吹藏匿罪犯等,而是反对直躬者及叶公以控告或举证自己亲属为荣的伦理观,认为在讼亲案上选择不证亲属有罪而沉默状或更符合伦理中道与正义。孔子这种思想与中外法律中的一些规定相契合,体现出了孔子思想的深刻现代性。鉴于人性原则及古今中外法律常规,建议在我国现行法律体系中设立"亲属举证豁免权"。

拙文<中国传统思想中的父子关系及其诠释的面向--从父为子隐,子为父隐说起>(<中国哲学史>2003年第1期)刊出后,引发了一些反响(包括疑问或质疑).其中有的学者指出,该文引述和处理了大量的史料,充分而翔实地展示了问题本身的历史与文化脉络,也扼要地清理出当代视野中几种可能的诠释理路与面向,但作者本人的观点似乎语焉不详,特别是对于相关讨论在当代伦理与文化建设中的意义,没有展开论述.     

In the Name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit: A Critical Reflection on the Trinitarian Theologies of Religion of S. Mark Heim and Gavin D'Costa

Abstract:  S. Mark Heim and Gavin D'Costa are two significant contemporary authors grounding a theology of religions in the doctrine of the Trinity. This article critically examines their respective interpretations of the doctrine of the Trinity, and their deployment of this doctrine in appreciation of religious difference. Heim, in his attempt to provide a theological validation for the world religions, departs from more traditional formulations of the Trinity. Ironically, this departure means that he fails to describe the world religions in their own particularity, that is, as they would describe themselves. D'Costa, by contrast, maintains a sound trinitarian position, and raises the question of Christian responsibility toward the world religions from precisely this theological grounding. He does not conceptualize the religions within a theological framework, but does demonstrate that engagement with the religions constitutes an obedient ecclesial response to the Trinity.     

In Defence of My Favourite Theory

One of the principles on how to act under moral uncertainty, My Favourite Theory, says roughly that a morally conscientious agent chooses an option that is permitted by the most credible moral theory. In defence of this principle, we argue that it prescribes consistent choices over time, without relying on intertheoretic comparisons of value, while its main rivals are either plagued by moral analogues of money pumps or in need of a method for making non‐arbitrary intertheoretic comparisons. We rebut the arguments that have been levelled against My Favourite Theory and offer some arguments against intertheoretic comparisons of value.

I have traced in my deliberations the mutual influence of drive and ego development throughout the male child's dyadic and triadic father relatedness as it proceeds within a changing soma and social surround during the first two decades of life. I have made the effort to conceptualize the normal developmental progression in male personality formation with explicit reference to the fate of the boy's dyadic father relationship as well as his negative Oedipus complex in general. These considerations, restricted as they are in scope and gender, assign to the dyadic father complex a nuclear role in neurosogenesis as well as recognize in it an etiological factor in relation to specific forms of psychopathology throughout the male life cycle.     

Father and Son: Freud Revisits his Oedipus Complex in <Emphasis Type="Italic">Moses and Monotheism</Emphasis>

In this paper, I propose to understand Freud on his own terms and within his social, intellectual and psychological context. It is my hope that such an understanding will contribute in turn to our understanding of some of the sources of the creative process. Were it not for his fame, Freud's views on religion, history and art, would at best be but a footnote to these subjects. My contention is that Freud's writings on these subjects can contribute more to our understanding of Freud, the person, than they do to some of the subjects he is writing about. Toward this end I will focus on two of Freud's works, written more than 30 years apart, his early Moses of Michelangelo and his late-life work Moses and Monotheism, which reflect the considerable changes in Freud's thinking.     

In Honor of Sex Roles: Reflections on the History and Development of the Journal

This article celebrates 35 years of Sex Roles’ contributions to research and other scholarship about gender. It begins with a reminder of what academia was like prior to the rise of second-wave feminism and shows how Sex Roles contributed to changing that androcentric climate. The article describes the founding of the journal and traces its growth and development, including its internationalization. Trends in the research topics reported in its pages are reviewed; assessment measures that debuted in Sex Roles, topics of special issues of the journal, and names of all of those who served on the editorial board over the years are mentioned. The article closes with speculation about the journal’s future.     

Honor and Public Opinion

Honor has been an indispensable reference in the life of individuals and societies throughout the course of human history. As a basic concern of men and women, the phenomenon already appears in the earliest literary testimonies. The heroes of the Greek, Roman or German epic poems adapt their behavior to the demands of this particular deity, honor. Literature, at any time, in any culture, in any language, makes constant use of honor as an effective dramatic element. The recurrent presence is certainly a reflection of the actual significance the phenomenon of honor had in everyone’s life. This essay clarifies why honor is given such importance; why it has been considered to be more valuable for the individual than his/her own life. To this end, the mention of public opinion is unavoidable. This phenomenon, in its social psychological conception, is the key that permits us to enlighten the labyrinth of honor.
