Ghost and self: Jung's paradigm shift and a response to Zinkin

Abstract :  Zinkin's lucid challenge to Jung makes perfect sense. Indeed, it is the implications of this 'making sense' that this paper addresses. For Zinkin's characterization of the 'self' takes it as a 'concept' requiring coherence; a variety of abstract non-contextual knowledge that itself has a mythical heritage. Moreover, Zinkin's refinement of Jung seeks to make his work fit for the scientific paradigm of modernity. In turn, modernity's paradigm owes much to Newton's notion of knowledge via reductionism. Here knowledge or investigation is divided up into the smallest possible units with the aim of eventually putting it all together into 'one' picture of scientific truth. Unfortunately, 'reductionism' does not do justice to the resonant possibilities of Jung's writing. These look forward to a new scientific paradigm of the twenty-first century, of the interactive 'field', emergence and complexity theory. The paper works paradoxically by discovering Zinkin's 'intersubjective self' after all, in two undervalued narratives by Jung, his doctoral thesis and a short late ghost story. However, in the ambivalences and radical fictional experimentation of these fascinating texts can be discerned an-Other self, one both  created and found .     

National psychology, national socialism, and analytical psychology: reflections on Jung and anti-semitism. Part II.

The paper is a critical study of the intellectual relations of analytical psychology and national socialism. I try to show that it was Jung's attempt to establish a psychology of nations that brought him into the same frame as Nazi anti-semitic ideology. In addition, Jung was absorbed by the question of leadership, also a pressing issue during the 1930s. Exploring these ideas as thoroughly as possible leads to a kind of reparation, for I think that post-Jungians do have reparation to make. Then it is possible to revalue Jung's overall project in more positive terms. By coupling a less simplistic methodology and a more sensitive set of values to Jung's basic intuitions about the importance of a psychology of cultural difference, analytical psychology has something to offer a depth psychology that is concerned with processes of political and social transformation.     

Allure of self-confirmation: a comment on Swann, Wenzlaff, Krull, and Pelham.

Swann, Wenzlaff, Krull, and Pelham (1992) described the results of 4 studies designed to examine the relation of depression and negative feedback seeking. Unfortunately, problems of the characterization of subjects and of constructs, as well as the interpretation of data trends, combine to limit the conclusions that can be drawn from these studies. We provide a brief review of these problems.

Following the theoretical analysis proposed in 1971, it is suggested that obsessions produce both discomfort and attempts to ‘put matters right’. These attempts are construed as being functionally equivalent to compulsive rituals. A two-part approach to treatment is described. It consists of satiation training and/or the prevention of internal and external neutralizing rituals (i.e. attempts to ‘put matters right’ are prevented). The present analysis is proposed as part of a move towards an integrated, consistent approach to the practice and theory of behaviour modification in dealing with obsessional and compulsive problems.
