Guidance and Guidance Systems in Secondary Schools: The Teacher's Views

The reorientation of school guidance to involve teachers in career guidance was the premise for this study. The objectives were to assess the attitudes of secondary vocational teachers toward the importance and adequacy of school guidance systems. Some 248 teachers were sent an instrument listing 19 guidance activities. Two scales of five options were used for importance and adequacy. A 75% response rate was achieved. Overall, the teachers believe that career guidance is an important function; however, they have an unfavorable disposition toward the adequacy of school guidance systems in providing students with career guidance.     

Career-Planning and Placement Services: Evaluations by College Recruiters and Placement Directors

Fifty-five college recruiters and 64 placement directors rated 19 career-planning and placement services and 8 kinds of student data on their value to recruiters. They also evaluated the most appropriate times for the use of student data. Significant differences between their ratings were found for 16 of the services and none of the kinds of student data. Significant differences between the groups' evaluations of the most appropriate times for the use of student data were found for 4 of 8 types. Recruiters and directors seem to be in complete agreement about the values of services and student data but in less agreement about the best times for using the student data.     

The Emergence of School Counseling and Guidance in Israel

This article deals with the development of counseling and guidance services in Israel. It stresses the preparation programs at the graduate level in 5 universities and discusses the current status and the major issues that school counselors, in particular, deal with today. This review further discusses in detail the future challenges and anticipated trends that the counseling profession faces in Israel.     

Placement and the Vietnam-Era Veteran in Transition

Full employment of Vietnam-era veterans is a major goal. The success of placement efforts rests heavily upon employment service counselors. This article briefly traces the etiology and nature of our concern for. Vietnam-era vets and suggests that a successful placement program depends largely upon three factors: (a) an understanding of the characteristics of present-day veterans, (b) an awareness of allied agencies, programs, and industries comprising the network of helping services, and (c) intimate knowledge of employers, their personnel representatives, the nature of the jobs available, and the practical workings of the placement process.     

Guidance and Educational Opportunity: The German Perspective

This article is based on information about the status of guidance and counseling in German education acquired by the author during his 1977 summer Fulbright Fellowship to the Federal Republic of Germany. Menacker identifies some points of comparison regarding the roles of guidance and counseling in the American and German education systems. The less developed German educational-guidance system is used to shed light on the nature of guidance contributions made by the American system.     

Family Ties and Child Placement

The fundamental premise of this paper is the primacy of the child's experience of biological-familial continuity in establishing his sense of self and personal significance. This paper examines the effects of current child placement practices on the child's ties to his biological, foster, and adoptive families. It explores alternative practices that would take into account biological-familial continuity.Comment is invited.     

The BJGC and Guidance and Counselling in Britain 1973-85

The background to the symposium is outlined. The balance of articles over the first twelve years of the British Journal of Guidance and Counselling is analysed, identifying a number of key features and changes. Some of the general issues cross-cutting the contributions to the symposium are noted.     

Guidance and Counselling in Schools

Developments in counselling over the last ten years have failed to meet the expectations of those who helped introduce counselling to British schools in the mid-1960s and early 1970s. Changes contributing to the current situation are discussed: in particular, changes in the theory and practice of counselling both outside and inside the school, the expansion of pastoral-care Systems, and economic, political and other shifts of emphasis during the period. Finally, some positive proposais for the future of counselling in schools are considered.     

The Normativity of Meaning: Guidance and Justification

Abstract

The thesis that meaning is normative has come under much scrutiny of late. However, there are aspects of the view that have received comparatively little critical attention which centre on meaning’s capacity to guide and justify linguistic action. Call such a view ‘justification normativity’ (JN). I outline Zalabardo’s (1997) account of JN and his corresponding argument against reductive-naturalistic meaning-factualism and argue that the argument presents a genuine challenge to account for the guiding role of meaning in linguistic action. I then present a proposal regarding how this challenge may be met. This proposal is then compared to recent work by Ginsborg (2011; 2012), who has outlined an alternative view of the normativity of meaning that explicitly rejects the idea that meanings guide and justify linguistic use. I outline how Ginsborg utilises this notion of normativity in order to provide a positive account of what it is to mean something by an expression which is intended to serve as a response to Kripke’s semantic sceptic. Finally, I argue that Ginsborg’s response to the sceptic is unsatisfactory, and that, insofar as it is able to preserve our intuitive view of meaning’s capacity to guide linguistic action, my proposal is to be preferred.
