Respect for Older Persons:

Most readily available literature on the subject of the status of older persons and the respect accorded to them is written within the framework of the Judaeo-Christian tradition. The result is a possible inclination to universalize to all people concepts and experiences that are unique to one cultural tradition. This paper reviews a totally different cultural and ethical basis of respect for older persons, the Confucian tradition; and traces the history of that tradition through 2000 years of one oriental society: Korea.

Leisure counseling and consultation is a fairly new counseling specialty that is emerging from the field of recreation and volunteer placement while borrowing heavily from vocational counseling models and techniques. After presenting a brief history of the development of the field, the authors describe a working model of one approach to leisure counseling. The article concludes with a prediction that the field will move from its present focus on leisure alone to an integration of leisure with vocational counseling and planning.

Counseling Middle-Aged and Older Workers

Employment counselors can play an important role in helping mature job seekers obtain work. Case studies are cited in which applicants were assisted by the counselor in assessing their experience and abilities and relating them to the job market. Testing may be a useful tool in the assessment process. Among the types of cases discussed are retirees who want to return to work, homemakers reentering the business world, and men and women seeking a change of occupations.     

Guided Autobiography: A Counseling Tool for Older Adults

The author describes Guided Autobiography, a course based on the life review concept, and evaluates its impact on self-concept, time competence, and purpose in life. Despite a lack of significant results on the dependent measures, informal evaluations and a follow-up study indicated that the course had resulted in some positive changes.     

Counseling Persons with a Fear of AIDS

The increasing incidence of AIDS has created a societal fear of AIDS that, in turn, has raised the level of fear and anxiety in individuals prone to fear responses. Fears accentuated by AIDS are discussed and guidelines for counseling offered.     

Leisure Activity Profile Measuring Use of Leisure Time by Persons with Alcoholism

Use of leisure time by persons with alcoholism differs from that of non-alcoholics. Some leisure activities may even contribute to a pattern of heavy drinking. The Leisure Activity Profile (LAP) was designed to identify dysfunctional leisure activity patterns, specifically those activity patterns associated with high levels of alcohol consumption. The initial developmental work on the LAP is described in this article. The LAP includes a list of 38 activities, half of which were selected for their association with alcohol consumption. Respondents indicate the activities in which they participate, and the level of alcohol consumption with each activity. Respondents also indicate if they complete the activity alone or with close friends or relatives. The LAP should prove useful to occupational therapists who treat persons with alcoholism, both in identifying dysfunctional leisure activity patterns and in developing and measuring treatment approaches.     

Abuse and Older Persons: Issues and Implications for Counselors

Counselors can play a vital role in addressing the needs of increasing numbers of older persons subject to and at risk for abuse from their families, caretakers, and themselves.     

Counseling the Disabled Older Person for the World of Work

Although work is meaningful to many older persons, numerous barriers exist that prohibit their active participation in the labor force. Employment counselors must possess a variety of attributes to help break down these barriers. This article discusses skills that the counselor needs when working with older adults and in particular with those who are disabled. Specialized approaches to job placement are discussed, including job modification and job restructuring. To become a successful advocate for the disabled elderly wishing to enter or remain in the labor market, the employment counselor is urged to become familiar with characteristics of older persons and federal laws relating to job development and placement for older and handicapped workers.     

Counseling Persons With Disabilities: Summary and Projections

The author summarizes the findings of the other articles in this feature in terms of progress made during the last decade, as well as problems remaining. The author proposes several idealistic scenarios for counselors and other human development specialists to use as guidelines for future work with people who are disabled.     

Roles of Counseling in Enabling Persons With Disabilities

The role of counseling in enabling students with disabilities has changed over the past 10 years. Other personnel in school settings now counsel students with disabilities, in addition to school and rehabilitation counselors. Evidence to support these contentions is described through a national survey. The specific roles of other counseling-related personnel are noted, and the primacy of transition issues is highlighted. Finally, there are implications for implementation of a collaborative consultation model in special education.
