I am clearly located where my body is located. But is there one particular place inside my body where I am? Recent results have provided apparently contradictory findings about this question. Here, we addressed this issue using a more direct approach than has been used in previous studies. Using a simple pointing task, we asked participants to point directly at themselves, either by manual manipulation of the pointer whilst blindfolded or by visually discerning when the pointer was in the correct position. Self-location judgements in haptic and visual modalities were highly similar, and were clearly modulated by the starting location of the pointer. Participants most frequently chose to point to one of two likely regions, the upper face or the upper torso, according to which they reached first. These results suggest that while the experienced self is not spread out homogeneously across the entire body, nor is it localised in any single point. Rather, two distinct regions, the upper face and upper torso, appear to be judged as where “I” am.  相似文献

If a line (the pointer) is aligned with a dot (the target) that stands on another line (the induction line) which is at an angle to the pointer, the pointer and the dot may no longer appear collinear. Whether they do or not depends upon the angle formed by the pointer with the induction line: the smaller the angle, the greater the misalignment effect. Misalignment is always in the direction of the induction line, which is why this alignment illusion is called attraction-caused misalignment (attraction misalignment for short). Three experiments are described in which this illusion is explored further. In the first it is shown that the induction line can exert its influence even when not contiguous with the target, though the size of the effect varies inversely with the distance of the induction line from the target. In the second experiment it is demonstrated that a dot as well as a line can induce attraction misalignment and that similarity between the induction and target items increases misalignment. Evidence in support of the theory that the termination of the induction line, as well as the part contiguous with the target dot, may induce attraction misalignment is provided in the third experiment.  相似文献

In this paper are described two systems for spatial (two-dimensional coordinates) and temporal analysis of video images. In the optical version, the Apple IIe generates a pointer on an Apple monitor; the pointer is then superimposed on the video image of a second video monitor, by reflecting the pointer with a half-silvered mirror. In the electronic version, a special card was designed for the Apple IIe to generate a pointer directly on the other video monitor. Both systems use the same software. The procedures of spatial and temporal data acquisition and storage are described as well as the reading, writing, printing, removing, listing, chaining, and dating operations of the digital and graphics files.  相似文献

Sometimes a goal-directed arm movement has to be modified en route due to an unforeseen perturbation such as a target displacement or a hand displacement by an external force. In this paper several aspects of that modification process are addressed. Subjects had to perform a point-to-point movement task on a computer screen using a mouse-coupled pointer as the representation of the hand position. Trajectory modifications were imposed by unexpectedly changing the position of the target or by changing the relation between mouse and screen pointer.In the first series of experiments, we examined how often a trajectory is updated. Here, trajectory modifications were imposed by unexpectedly changing the normal relation between mouse and pointer to a shear-like relation, where a percentage of the forward/backward position of the hand was added to the pointer position in the left/right direction. Withdrawal of visual feedback during the movement revealed that trajectories were updated at interval times shorter than 200 ms. From the similarity with experiments where the original relation between mouse and pointer was restored during the movements, we conclude that motor plans are updated on-line to move the hand from its current perceived position to the target.In a second series of experiments, we studied whether a continuous change in target position yields similar trajectory modifications as a continuous hand displacement. To mimic the latter perturbation, we used the above-mentioned distortion of the mouse-pointer relation. We found that the resulting hand paths did not differ for the two visual perturbations and conclude that the perturbed, goal-directed movements are modified in a consistent way, irrespective of whether the position of the target or hand was perturbed. Simulations of the experimental data with a kinematic reaching model support this conclusion.  相似文献

A number of anomalies have been pointed out in opposition to attempts to account for the Poggendorff illusion in terms of the expansion of small or medium-sized acute angles. A principle under which these anomalies could be subsumed was proposed and subjected to experimental testing using simplified displays. The following theory emerged from these experiments. If a straight line (the pointer) is aligned with a do (the target) situated at the end of a second line (the induction line) and lying in a different orientation from the pointer, then (depending on the angle between pointer and induction line) the pointer will appear to be aligned with a point further along the induction line. The amount of misalignment varies inversely with increase in size, up to about 135 degrees, of the angle formed by the pointer with the induction line, after which there is no displacement attributable to the induction line. The effect appears not to be due to neural interaction. An explanation in terms of eye movement is discussed.  相似文献

The authors investigated 4 variants of a reciprocal Fitts task in which the pointer was moved to a stationary target, the target was moved to a stationary pointer, or both the pointer and the target were moved to each other bimanually; the bimanual task was carried out either by a single person or by a dyad. Fitts's law held in all 4 conditions, with only minor parametric changes. The kinematic organization varied with task difficulty but remained invariant in task space (i.e., in the mutual frame of reference of the pointer-target system) whatever the pointing condition. In the bimanual conditions, the 2 effectors were coordinated in antiphase with compensatory variability. The authors suggest that the observed chronometric and kinematic patterns emerge from an interplay between simple harmonic motion and the stabilizing influence of the informational flow generated by the closing of the gap between the pointer and the target interval.  相似文献

This paper reports some preliminary data on a “window-pointer” technique for measuring word processing time in reading. In this technique, almost all of the letters are masked on a page of text shown on a video monitor. The letters can be seen only through a “window” showing one word on one line. Subjects control the horizontal location of the window by moving a pointer left and right. When subjects want to move the window to the next line, the window is moved off the right end of the current line, and the pointer is moved back to the left. The window then reappears at the beginning of the next line. After some practice, subjects can move the window in approximate synchrony with their eyes, and can read the passage without any difficulty. The length of time the window spends on each word can then be used as a measure of word processing time. An analysis of these window durations indicates that they are similar in many respects to the gaze durations obtained with eye-movement monitoring techniques.  相似文献

SUMMARY

In this paper clinical examples are used to illustrate the view that transference to the diagnostician (and the institution) exists from the start of the process of assessment. It is also suggested that providing an analytic setting during an assessment will facilitate the emergence of both transference and counter-transference. Sensitivity to these can add greatly to the depth and richness of understanding of the object relationships and early situations being transferred, and hence add to the understanding of the character structure and psychopathology of the child. The deeper the understanding that can be reached in an assessment, the more likely it is that any diagnostic formulation will have validity and value in generating hypotheses and in directing any further intervention. An assessment not making use of these concepts would seem to be ignoring an important dimension which psycho-analytic theory and technique can offer.  相似文献

We use an exocentric pointing task to study exocentric visual directions to targets that are opposite to a pointer relative to the observer. (The apparent distance between the target and the pointer always exceeded 90 degrees of visual angle.) All pointing takes place in the horizontal plane at eye height. Observers could not see both target and pointer at a single glance. They had to look back and forth between them, using combinations of eye movements, head turns, twists at the waist and turning on the feet. In the limit of diametrically opposite targets we find that the observers pick either one of two distinct orientations of the pointer as equally "visually correct". Which one results depends on the stance assumed by the observer. The difference between the two equally acceptable pointings is between 5 degrees and 10 degrees. Such a result is predicted from earlier measurements in the context of a model that describes the geometry of the horizon as a Riemannian space with varying intrinsic curvature. The present results thus fit--perhaps surprisingly--very well in such a picture.  相似文献

In two experiments, 5- to 13-year-old children were required to mentally track the rotation of a pointer around a circular backdrop, and to indicate the pointer's imagined position on the backdrop at the sound of a signal. In Experiment 1, children imagined the pointer rotate around its end point. In Experiment 2, children imagined the pointer rotate around its midpoint, and indicated the position of one of its two ends at the time of the signal. The end to be indicated was not specified by the experimenter until the time of the signal. Thus, children were required to use an imaging strategy that could keep track of the changing positions of both ends of the pointer. In both experiments, children older than 8 years of age generated linear distance × time functions indicating mental tracking, but younger children did not. In Experiment 2, the proportions of children at each grade level using holistic or part-to-part strategies to mentally track the pointer were comparable, as were mental tracking rates. The results were discussed in relation to both recent research on children's counting, and Piagetian and information-processing views of metal imagery development.  相似文献

While an increasing number of behavioral studies examining spatial cognition use experimental paradigms involving disorientation, the process by which one becomes disoriented is not well explored. The current study examined this process using a paradigm in which participants were blindfolded and underwent a succession of 70° or 200° passive, whole body rotations around a fixed vertical axis. After each rotation, participants used a pointer to indicate either their heading at the start of the most recent turn or their heading at the start of the current series of turns. Analyses showed that in both cases, mean pointing errors increased gradually over successive turns. In addition to the gradual loss of orientation indicated by this increase, analysis of the pointing errors also showed evidence of occasional, abrupt loss orientation. Results indicate multiple routes from an oriented to a disoriented state, and shed light on the process of becoming disoriented.  相似文献

Many tasks have been used to probe human directional knowledge, but relatively little is known about the comparative merits of different means of indicating target azimuth. Few studies have compared action-based versus non-action-based judgments for targets encircling the observer. This comparison promises to illuminate not only the perception of azimuths in the front and rear hemispaces, but also the frames of reference underlying various azimuth judgments, and ultimately their neural underpinnings. We compared a response in which participants aimed a pointer at a nearby target, with verbal azimuth estimates. Target locations were distributed between 20 degrees and 340 degrees. Non-visual pointing responses exhibited large constant errors (up to -32 degrees) that tended to increase with target eccentricity. Pointing with eyes open also showed large errors (up to -21 degrees). In striking contrast, verbal reports were highly accurate, with constant errors rarely exceeding +/-5 degrees. Under our testing conditions, these results are not likely to stem from differences in perception-based versus action-based responses, but instead reflect the frames of reference underlying the pointing and verbal responses. When participants used the pointer to match the egocentric target azimuth rather than the exocentric target azimuth relative to the pointer, errors were reduced.  相似文献

Classically, it has been assumed that visual space can be represented by a metric. This means that the distance between points and the angle between lines can be uniquely defined. However, this assumption has never been tested. Also, measurements outdoors, where monocular cues are abundant, conflict with this model. This paper reports on two experiments in which the structure of visual space was investigated, using an exocentric pointing task. In the first experiment, we measured the influence of the separation between pointer and target and of the orientation of the stimuli with respect to the observer. This was done both monocularly and binocularly. It was found that the deviation of the pointer settings depended linearly on the orientation, indicating that visual space is anisotropic. The deviations for configurations that were symmetrical in the median plane were approximately the same, indicating that left/right symmetry was maintained. The results for monocular and binocular conditions were very different, which indicates that stereopsis was an important cue. In both conditions, there were large deviations from the veridical. In the second experiment, the relative distance of the pointer and the target with respect to the observer was varied in both the monocular and the binocular conditions. The relative distance turned out to be the main parameter for the ranges used (1-5 m). Any distance function must have an expanding and a compressing part in order to describe the data. In the binocular case, the results were much more consistent than in the monocular case and had a smaller standard deviation. Nevertheless, the systematic mispointings remained large. It can therefore be concluded that stereopsis improves space perception but does not improve veridicality.  相似文献

We investigated the structure of visual space with a 3D exocentric pointing task. Observers had to direct a pointer towards a ball. Positions of both objects were varied. We measured the deviations from veridical pointing-directions in the horizontal and vertical planes (slant and tilt resp.). The slant increased linearly with an increasing horizontal visual angle. We also examined the effect of relative distance, i.e., the ratio of the distances between the two objects and the observer. When the pointer was further away from the observer than the ball, the observer directed the pointer in between himself and the ball, whereas when the pointer was closer to the observer he directed the pointer too far away. Neither the horizontal visual angle nor the relative distance had an effect on the tilt. The vertical visual angle had no effect on the deviations of the slant, but had a linear effect on the tilt. These results quantify the anisotropy of visual space.  相似文献

The mid‐points of a series of lines which were positioned both within hand‐reach (near space) and beyond hand‐reach (far space) were estimated by 24 women and 24 men. When using a laser pointer to perform estimations, women were more accurate in the near condition than the far, whereas men were more accurate in the far condition than the near. When using a stick pointer for the far condition, women were more accurate than when using the laser, whereas men were more accurate using the laser pointer than the stick for the far condition. There was no difference between near and far accuracy scores for either sex using the stick. These results suggest that use of a tool which provides proprioceptive feedback causes the brain to remap far‐space stimuli as if situated in near space. Possible origins and neural bases for these differences are considered. Finally, the study found evidence for pseudoneglect, but no evidence for pseudoneglect shift.  相似文献

Neurophysiological data indicate that the reachable peripersonal space and the unreachable extrapersonal space are represented in segregated parietofrontal circuits and that when the unreachable space becomes reachable because of tool use, it is automatically coded by the network selective for peripersonal space. Here we directly tested the role of action's consequences in space coding. Thirty-eight participants bisected lines at either a reachable distance (60 cm) or unreachable distance (120 cm) using either a laser pointer or laser cutter. The laser cutter but not the laser pointer had an action consequence; the line broke into two pieces. The results showed that distance moderated the effect of action. At an unreachable distance, the mean bisection point was closer to the centre when participants used the laser cutter compared to when they used the laser pointer. There were no differences at a reachable distance (60 cm). This result suggests that the space in which the individual may determine a physical consequence is categorized as peripersonal space, independently from its actual distance from the individual's body.  相似文献

We introduce a variant of pointer structures with denotational semantics and show its equivalence to systems of boolean equations: both have the same solutions. Taking paradoxes to be statements represented by systems of equations (or pointer structures) having no solutions, we thus obtain two alternative means of deciding paradoxical character of statements, one of which is the standard theory of solving boolean equations. To analyze more adequately statements involving semantic predicates, we extend propositional logic with the assertion operator and give its complete axiomatization. This logic is a sub-logic of statements in which the semantic predicates become internalized (for instance, counterparts of Tarski’s definitions and T-schemata become tautologies). Examples of analysis of self-referential paradoxes are given and the approach is compared to the alternative ones.  相似文献

The Quality Control (QC) Guidelines are intended to increase the efficiency, precision, and accuracy of the scoring, analysis, and reporting process of testing. The QC Guidelines focus on large-scale testing operations where multiple forms of tests are created for use on set dates. However, they may also be used for a wide variety of other testing situations and assessment techniques and for almost any situation in which assessment occurs. A study is reported of an exocentric pointing task in all three dimensions, in near space, with only two visible luminous objects--a pointer and a target. The task of the subject was to aim a pointer at a target. The results clearly show that visual space is not isotropic, since every set direction appeared to consist of two independent components--one in the projection onto a frontoparallel plane (tilt), the other in depth (slant). The tilt component shows a general trend across subjects, an oblique effect, and can be judged monocularly. The slant component is symmetrical in the mid-sagittal plane, requires the use of binocular information, and shows considerable differences between subjects. These differences seem to depend on the amount of binocular information used by each subject. There was a remarkably high level of consistency in the exocentric pointing, despite the absence of environmental cues. The within-subject consistency in the settings of the pointer corresponds to a consistency of about 1 min of arc in disparity of its tip, even though the pointer and target are separated by more than 5 deg.  相似文献

Do young infants understand that pointing gestures allow the pointer to change the information state of a recipient? We used a third-party experimental scenario to examine whether 9- and 11-month-olds understand that a pointer's pointing gesture can inform a recipient about a target object. When the pointer pointed to a target, infants subsequently looked longer when the recipient selected the nontarget rather than the target object. In contrast, infants looked equally long whether the recipient selected the target or nontarget object when the pointer used a noncommunicative gesture, a fist. Finally, when the recipient had no perceptual access to the pointing gesture, infants looked longer when the recipient selected the target rather than the nontarget object. Young infants understand a fundamental aspect of the communicative function of pointing: Pointing, but not all gestures, can transfer information. Gestures may thus be one of the tools infants use for an early understanding of communication.  相似文献
