Two forms of aggression, intermale and predatory, wwere compared on the basis of behavioral content. Male wild mice were presented with opponents of two types, nonaggressive male mice and crickets, and the amounts of time spent in each of 18 behaviors were recorded. Results from analyses of variance and principal components analyses indicated that the structure of behavioral content differs greatly for intermale fighting and predatory behavior. It was, therefore, concluded that the integrated patterns of beahvior were controlled by separate mechanisms for predatory versus intermale aggression.  相似文献

Gonadectomized male mice from the CF-1, CFW, and CD-1 strains were exposed to different androgens (testosterone, dihydrotestosterone, methyltrienolone) or estrogens (estradiol, diethylstilbestrol) and tested for aggressive behavior. Genetic differences in sensitivity to the aggression-promoting property of the various treatments were found. CF-1 mice responded to either androgenic or estrogenic stimulation, CFW males were most sensitive to the estrogen treatments, while CD-1 males responded to androgen but were relatively insensitive to the aggression-promoting property of estrogens. These data suggest that there may be multiple aggression-activating systems and that the functional pathway varies with genotype. Additional experiments examined whether receptor binding in the hypothalamic-preoptic-septal region was related to the genetic differences in behavioral responsiveness. The binding data suggested that sensitivity to the aggression-promoting property of estrogens was related to either a higher concentration of binding sites or to higher affinity binding between estrogen and its receptor. A systematic relationship between dihydrotestosterone binding and behavioral responsiveness to androgen was not found.  相似文献

The aims of this paper are to study the aggressive behavior in male mice with consecutive experience of victories in 2, 10, and 20 days (T2, T10, and T20 winners) of daily agonistic confrontations under the sensory contact model and to determine the most probable behavioral domains that should be used as animal models for learned aggression in humans. It has been shown that the structure of winners' behavior changes from test to test: the attacking behavior prevailed (81% of the total time) in the behavior of T2 winners. Attacks and diggings (herein: digging up and scattering the litter on the partner' territory) prevailed in the behavior of T10 winners (each approximately 40%). T20 winners demonstrated aggressive grooming half of the testing time and digging behavior 25% of the time. Correlational analysis revealed that the number of significant correlations between the behavioral domains (attacking, digging, aggressive grooming, self‐grooming, threats, rotations) and between different behavioral parameters (latency, number, total and average time) of one behavioral domain are growing from the second test to twentieth test, and the relationships between the behavioral domains change qualitatively. The following may be regarded as elements of learned aggression in male mice: (1) appearance of aggressive grooming instead of the intensive attacking behavior and (2) involvement of the digging behavior in the hostile behavior together with the threats and attacking behavior. Negative correlations between parameters of the behavioral domains may testify to the replacement of one behavioral pattern by another and reflect learned behavior. Positive correlations between certain behavioral domains may reflect the formation of a common motivational background for the winners' behavior. Aggr. A study of the effects of the duration of individual and group housing on intermale fighting and adrenocortical activity was conducted in TO strain mice. It was found that fighting and threat increased with progressive isolation up to an asymptote at 56–58 days. ‘Basal’ adrenocortical function differed little under the 2 housing conditions, but after ‘stress,’ mice isolated for short periods, which had not fought when tested for aggression, had lower titers than group-housed counterparts. However, mice that had been isolated for longer periods, and had fought in aggression tests, had higher corticosterone titers than comparable group-housed animals. The effects of a short duration (28–30 days) of differential housing, commencing at different ages, were also studied. The shorter duration adrenocortical changes were largely confirmed. In general, the earlier the age at which the differential housing was imposed, the greater the behavioral differences between animals under each housing condition. It is suggested that this is largely a consequence of a loss of behavioral plasticity in older mice. The data provides little support for the concept of the “isolation stress syndrome,” or for the view that the characteristic fighting exhibited by individually housed mice is a consequence of “social deprivation”.  相似文献

An attempt was made to purify an aggression-promoting chemosignal of male SJL/J mice. It was shown in Experiment 1 that the chemosignal is present in intact-male urine (IU) but not in urine (CU) from castrated males. In Experiments 3 and 4, a head-space distillation technique was used to isolate the volatile components of IU. It was shown that aggression-promoting cues were present in the volatile portion of IU and not in the nonvolatile portion. Also CU was tested for behavioral activity under the procedures of Experiments 3 and 4 and was found not to contain the chemosensory cue.  相似文献

In evaluating the role of behavioral interactions in the maintenance of ecological and ethological isolation in sympatric populations of P. leucopus and P. gossypinus, the interspecific behavior of 94 animals in all possible sex pair combinations was observed in 84 staged dyadic trials of 15-minutes duration. Qualitatively the patterns of behavior differed little between sexes or species. Despite a high inter-individual variability and the high proportion of amicable interactions, the mean frequency of occurrence of aggressive behavior as well as the number of trials in which aggressive behavior occurred was greater in trials of animals from areas of range sympatry in comparison with those of the control animals from areas of range allopatry. Although the dominance relationships in many trials were unclear, gossypinus nonetheless consistently dominated leucopus. These data combined with examination of the habitats of these mice where their ranges do not overlap suggest that agonistic interactions may implement species integrity either primarily by Limiting or preventing the occupancy by leucopus of areas in which gossypinus occurs or secondarily by reducing the chances of pair bond formation.  相似文献

The sensory contact technique increases aggressiveness in male mice and allows aggressive types of behavior to be formed as a result of the repeated experience of victories in daily agonistic confrontations. Some behavioral domains confirm the development of learned aggression in males similar to those in humans. The features are repeated experience of aggression reinforced by victories; elements of learned behavior after periods of confrontation; intent, measured by increase of the aggressive motivation prior to agonistic confrontation; and decreased emotionality, estimated by parameters of open‐field behavior. Relevant situation provokes increases in aggression (boundary aggression). This review summarizes data on the influence of positive fighting experience in daily intermale confrontations on the behavior, neurochemistry, and physiology of aggressive mice (winners). This sort of experience changes many characteristics in individual and social behaviors, these having been estimated in different tests and in varied situations. Some physiological parameters are also changed in the winners. Neurochemical data confirm the activation of brain dopaminergic systems and functional inhibition of serotonergic system in winners under the influence of the repeated experience of aggression. The expression of the neurochemical and behavioral changes observed in winners has been found to depend on the mouse strain and on the duration of their agonistic confrontations. Aggr. This study assessed whether two types of non-aggressive “standard opponents” (“intact” and “anosmic” group-housed males) produced similar behavioral changes in isolated OF1 male mice given several experiences of victory. Experimental groups confronted either intact or anosmic opponents every two days until they had completed four encounters. The behavioral changes were recorded using a detailed ethologically inspired analysis. These changes were clearly different depending on the opponent type. When intact opponents were used, experimental subjects increased the time spent in digging, non-social exploration, explore from a distance, and attack over encounters, but showed decreased time spent in threat and a decreased latency to the first attack. In encounters with anosmic opponents, only declines in the latencies to threat and attack were noted. Moreover, the experimental groups differed in their behaviors over encounters. Those confronting intact opponents spent less time in social investigation, more time in explore from a distance and threat, and showed a shorter latencies to threat and attack than counterparts confronting anosmics. These results suggest that, although both types of “standard opponents” are similar in their non-aggressiveness, they elicit rather different behavioral responses in their adversaries. These findings provide additional support for the view that the type of opponent used in studies on intermale aggression is of paramount importance. Indeed, the use of different types of “standardized non-aggressive opponents” appears to be an important source of variability between studies. © 1994 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

The endogenous polyamine agmatine may be a new central neurotransmitter. Agmatine‐like immunoreactivity has been described in numerous brain regions (such as the hypothalamus and amygdala), long thought involved in the control of aggression. Consequently, the present study examined agmatine's (2.5–80 mg/kg, ip) effects on behavior directed by isolated male mice to anosmic partners in a neutral area. The videotaped encounters were analysed in terms of 10 broad behavioral categories. Agmatine did not appear to be involved in the modulation of aggression or anxiety in this test. Aggr. Violence was shown to be qualitatively different from functional hyper‐aggression in mice selected for high aggression namely Short Attack Latency (SAL), Turku Aggressive (TA) and North Carolina (NC900) strains. This study aimed at investigating whether this adulthood violent phenotype as seen previously in the SAL mice is fixed and hence behaviorally inflexible right from day 1 of the experiment or consequential, i.e., subject to gradual change from functional aggression to violence. The functionally hyper‐aggressive strains namely TA and NC900 strains served as controls for the study. Methodologically, behavioral (in)flexibility was studied using the overall sequential structure of agonistic behavior. In particular, intra‐individual variations in the overall agonistic behavior as well as offensive, pre‐ and post‐offensive behavior transitions, directly related to the resident–intruder interactions were investigated. The SAL mice showed the least intra‐individual variation in their overall sequential agonistic structure as well as a fixed offense‐oriented agonistic behavior of highest magnitude when compared with the other strains. Additionally, the pre‐ and post‐ offensive transitions were most salient in the functionally hyper‐aggressive TA and NC900 strains, whereas virtually absent in the SAL mice. Thus, the violent behavior of the adult SAL mice is behaviorally inflexible or fixed, whereas the functionally hyper‐aggressive behavior of the adult TA and NC900 mice is behaviorally flexible and constantly adaptive to the opponent behavior, over 3 days of repeated resident–intruder interaction. Author experiment using a modified version of the Buss' aggression paradigm tested Berkowitz' completion hypothesis, which states unsuccessful aggressive attempts at the frustrator serve as further frustration and intensify aggression. Testing was done by varying the number of successful aggressive attempts for different experimental groups. The experiment indicated first a positive relationship between subjective levels of frustration and aggression, which supports a general frustration-aggression hypothesis, and second that unsuccessful aggressive attempts lead to increased aggression in terms of shock intensity. This was interpreted as supportive of Berkowitz' completion hypothesis, although alternative interpretations in terms of cognitive and behavioral strategies cannot be excluded.  相似文献

Aggression occurring during an initial confrontation between two rats may result in significant behavioral changes in one or both animals. The present experiment was designed to study behavioral changes occurring in the course of an agonistic interaction and the consequences of winning or losing. In order to ensure winning, male CPB-S3 Tryon Maze Dull) rats were confronted with males of a more aggressive strain (Long Evans); and to ensure losing they were confronted with those of a less aggressive strain Wistar). Winners were tested against losers, this test being repeated after an interval of 17 days. Winners and losers were also tested with naive S3 opponents. Possible effects of winning and losing in nonagonistic behavioral tests were then examined. These measured open field activity, passive avoidance learning, and masculine sexual behavior. The results replicate and extend earlier findings using a different strain, indicating that significant and relatively permanent behavioral changes are induced in male winners and losers. Behavioral change is most prominent in the losers. Despite the behavioral differences between winners and losers in tests for agonistic behavior, no consistent differences were noted in any of the other behavioral tests.  相似文献

The effects of a single dose (1 mg) of cyproterone acetate administered on either day 1 or day 20 of life on the adult behaviors of male and female TO strain albino mice were studied. The mice were tested both in a “standard opponent”-type situation and in a similar test using a hormonally primed receptive female, after being gonadectomized and maintained with testosterone propionate as adults. Neonatal treatment with this compound had little effect on subsequent fighting behavior in either sex, but clear evidence was produced that this treatment masculinized the sexual behavioral potentialities of the females, an effect which was apparent in animals which had been injected on either day 1 or day 20 of life. Indications were obtained that females treated neonatally with cyproterone acetate were capable of differentiating between the male and female “opponents” in a manner similar to the male. The effects of this treatment on fighting behavior consequently appear to be dissimilar to the effects of neonatal castration in this species. However, the effects on mounting behavior in the females, evidenced in adulthood, seem Likely to be a consequence of the weak androgenic properties of the antiandrogen. The administration of cyproterone acetate neonatally appears to have a more dramatic effect on the adult weights of endocrine organs in females than in mates.  相似文献

Behavioral, physiological (i.e., endocrine), and anatomical consequences of crowding in mice were studied in a situation where animals were in auditory, visual, olfactory, and tactile contact but restrained from full physical interactions, to prevent overt aggression. Males that cohabited with females undisturbed by neighboring conspecifics showed greater propensity to attack same-sex intruders and had higher plasma testosterone levels than did their “crowded” counterparts, that is, males cohabiting with females and housed adjacent to other male/female pairs. In this respect, the latter animals resembled submissive males. However, a significant increase in weight of androgen-dependent target organs (i.e., seminal vesicles and preputial glands) was found in crowded males. These data indicate that despite the observed inhibition of social aggression these males are not physiologically comparable (homologous) to male mice that experienced defeat and the stress of submission during fighting. The intriguing possibility that different conversion pathway of testosterone are accelerated, as a result of social communication, in males living in these two environments and the behavioral implications of these possibilities are discussed. Finally, the parental behavior of crowded animals, although not freely interacting with each other, was disrupted, causing a marked decrease in reproductive success. In this situation a high incidence of infanticide of their offspring by both parents was observed, whereas this behavior was virtually absent in non-crowded male/female pairs.  相似文献

The relative contributions of aggression and victimization to the prediction of self‐reported emotional and behavioral difficulties over and above self‐reported prior problems were investigated in a 1‐year longitudinal study. Fourth‐, fifth‐, and sixth‐graders (N = 471) completed peer nominations of aggression and victimization as well as self‐report measures of social, behavioral, and emotional problems at baseline and at 1‐year follow‐up. Peer aggression added to the prediction of externalizing problems, specifically, self‐report of aggression and delinquency. In contrast, victimization by peers contributed to self‐reported unpopularity but not depression. Victimization among girls was also predictive of subsequent self‐reported delinquency. Theoretical and practical implications of the findings, as well as future directions for research, are discussed. Aggr. Behav. 26:345–358, 2000. © 2000 Wiley‐Liss, Inc.  相似文献

In investigating the olfactory modulation of aggression in mice, a urine-coating technique frequently has been used. Fighters typically have been tested against castrated animals coated with either urine or water. Then, if the fighters are more aggressive toward urine-coated castrates than toward water-coated castrates, it is concluded that olfaction plays a role in this discriminatory response. However, it is possible that the fighers might react to behavioral differences between these two groups of castrates caused by the different experimental treatment. Three experiments were conducted to study this possible confound and the role of olfaction in the control of agonistic encounters. The results indicated that 1) the confound is not likely to operate; 2) even if the confound is allowed to operate, it is not an effective discriminatory cue; and 3) anosmic fighters do not exhibit differential attacks toward castrates treated with different chemo-signals. Therefore, the emission and perception of olfactory cues do play an important role in mouse agonistic interactions.  相似文献

We designed this study to examine children's self-reported and observed emotional and behavioral responding to marital conflict as a potential mechanism linking marital physical aggression (as reported by the parents) and children's behavioral adjustment (as reported by their preschool teachers). In a sample of 48 preschoolers, parental marital physical aggression was positively associated with children's observed dysregulated responding to interparental conflict and negatively associated with children's self-reported behavioral disruption. Marital aggression and children's self-reported responding to marital conflict predicted teacher-reported behavior problems, with both variables adding unique variance. Our findings suggested a potential pathway linking exposure to marital conflict, children's regulatory strategies, and children's behavioral adjustment outside the home.  相似文献

Amisulpride is a substituted benzamide derivative that acts as a selective dopamine D2/D3 receptor antagonist. Although the anti‐aggressive properties of neuroleptic drugs are well known, the effects of amisulpride on agonistic interactions have not been explored, and there are no studies comparing acute and subchronic effects of this compound on aggression in rodents. In this study, we examined the action of amisulpride (5–25 mg/kg, i.p), administered acutely or subchronically for 10 days, on agonistic behavior elicited by isolation in male mice. Individually housed mice were exposed to anosmic "standard opponents" 30 min after drug administration, and the encounters were videotaped and evaluated using an ethologically based analysis. After acute treatment, amisulpride (5–20 mg/kg) exhibited an ethopharmacological profile characterized by a marked decrease of offensive behaviors (threat and attack) without an impairment of motor activity. By contrast, the anti‐aggressive action of the highest dose used (25 mg/kg) was accompanied by a weak increase of immobility. Body care was also significantly enhanced after treatment with the drug (20 and 25 mg/kg), emphasizing the involvement of dopaminergic receptors in this behavior. After subchronic treatment, no tolerance to amisulpride anti‐aggressive activity was observed. Overall, this behavioral profile is similar to that observed by other atypical neuroleptics. Aggr. We exposed the pups of three F1 genotypes of mice to a daily regime of cocaine by injecting their mothers (all C57BL/10J strain) on days 7–18 of gestation with 20 mg/kg subcutaneously. Pups of the cocaine and control groups did not differ on measures of maternal and pup health or size. Male pups were weaned and isolated at 21 days of age and their behaviors measured in an intermale aggression situation at about 80 days of age. Treated and untreated males of each F1 genotype were paired in dyads with either a C3H/HeJ (hawk-like) or AKR/J (retaliator-like) standard tester male. Standard tester males were not exposed to cocaine. Cocaine treatment alone reduced the overall level of aggression in dyads, and in interaction with genotype or the standard tester it altered the behavior of dyads in all phases of social interaction: the initiation, content, and outcome. Standard testers used as behavioral probes, differentiated cocaine and control males with respect to their stimulus and behavioral qualities. Aggr. Although the role of dopamine D1–D2–D3 receptors in the modulation of aggression has been extensively documented, there is not information with respect to the implication of D4 receptor. The aim of this study was to examine the acute effects of L–741,741 (0.75, 1.5 and 3 mg/kg, i.p), a selective D4 receptor antagonist, on social encounters between male mice using an ethopharmacological approach. Ten min of diadic interactions were staged between a singly housed and an anosmic mouse in a neutral area. These encounters were videotaped and the accumulated time allocated by subjects to ten broad behavioral categories was estimated. Besides other behaviors, the aggressive and motor behaviors were evaluated 30 min after injection using an ethologically based analysis. L–741,741 did not affect significantly offensive behaviors (threat and attack), as compared with the control group. Likewise, motor and anxiety‐related behaviors (such as social investigation, avoidance/flee or defense submission) were not altered after drug administration. These results suggest that dopamine D4 receptor is not involved in the modulation of aggressive behavior. Aggr. Behav. 29:552–557, 2003. © 2003 Wiley‐Liss, Inc.  相似文献
