This paper explores some of the differences between the enactive approach in cognitive science and the extended mind thesis.
We review the key enactive concepts of autonomy and sense-making. We then focus on the following issues: (1) the debate between internalism and externalism about cognitive processes; (2)
the relation between cognition and emotion; (3) the status of the body; and (4) the difference between ‘incorporation’ and
mere ‘extension’ in the body-mind-environment relation.

The embodied, embedded, enactive, and extended approaches to cognition explicate many important details for a phenomenology
of perception, and are consistent with some of the traditional phenomenological analyses. Theorists working in these areas,
however, often fail to provide an account of how intersubjectivity might relate to perception. This paper suggests some ways
in which intersubjectivity is important for an adequate account of perception.

Phenomenology of the body and the third generation of cognitive science, both of which attribute a central role in human cognition
to the body rather than to the Cartesian notion of representation, face the criticism that higher-level cognition cannot be
fully grasped by those studies. The problem here is how explicit representations, consciousness, and thoughts issue from perception
and the body, and how they cooperate in human cognition. In order to address this problem, we propose a research program,
a cognitive phenomenology of the body, which is basically motivated by the perspective of Merleau-Ponty. We find a substantial clue in developmental psychological
studies on the body and language.

This paper reformulates some of the questions raised by extended mind theorists from an enactive, life/mind continuity perspective.
Because of its reliance on concepts such as autopoiesis, the enactive approach has been deemed internalist and thus incompatible
with the extended mind hypothesis. This paper answers this criticism by showing (1) that the relation between organism and
cogniser is not one of co-extension, (2) that cognition is a relational phenomenon and thereby has no location, and (3) that
the individuality of a cogniser is inevitably linked with the question of its autonomy, a question ignored by the extended
mind hypothesis but for which the enactive approach proposes a precise, operational, albeit non-functionalist answer. The
paper raises a pespective of embedded and intersecting forms of autonomous identity generation, some of which correspond to
the canonical cases discussed in the extended mind literature, but on the whole of wider generality. In addressing these issues,
this paper proposes unbiased, non-species specific definitions of cognition, agency and mediation, thus filling in gaps in
the extended mind debates that have led to paradoxical situations and a problematic over-reliance on intutions about what
counts as cognitive.

Recent social theory has departed from methodological individualism’s explanation of action according to the motives and dispositions
of human individuals in favor of explanation in terms of broader agencies consisting of both human and nonhuman elements described
as cyborgs, actor-networks, extended agencies, or distributed cognition. This paper proposes that moral responsibility for
action also be vested in extended agencies. It advances a consequentialist view of responsibility that takes moral responsibility
to be a species of causal responsibility, and it answers objections that might be raised on the basis of intentions and deserts.

Relatively little is known about the factor structure of disruptive behavior among preadolescent girls. The present study
reports on exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses of disruptive girl behavior over four successive data waves as rated
by parents and teachers in a large, representative community sample of girls (N = 2,451). Five factors were identified from parent ratings (oppositional behavior/conduct problems, inattention, hyperactivity/impulsivity,
relational aggression, and callous-unemotional behaviors), and four factors were identified derived from teacher ratings (oppositional
behavior/conduct problems/callous-unemotional behaviors, inattention, hyperactivityimpulsivity, and relational aggression).
There was a high degree of consistency of items loading on equivalent factors across parent and teacher ratings. Year-to-year
stability of factors between ages five and 12 was high for parent ratings (ICC = 0.70 to 0.88), and slightly lower for teacher
ratings (ICC = 0.56 to 0.83). These findings are discussed in terms of possible adjustment to the criteria for children's
disruptive behavior disorders found in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders.

The paper is intended to focus on peculiarities of nanomedicine and the importance of social concerns implicated, in order
to understand if existing regulations are appropriate to maintain its safety or if a new ad hoc regulatory framework is needed. Consideration of social challenges will underline the crucial role of medical ethics in regulatory
discussion.

In this introduction we discuss the motivation behind the workshop “Towards a New Epistemology of Mathematics” of which this
special issue constitutes the proceedings. We elaborate on historical and empirical aspects of the desired new epistemology,
connect it to the public image of mathematics, and give a summary and an introduction to the contributions to this issue.

This paper examines extant ways of classifying varieties of psychological externalism and argues that they imply a hitherto
unrecognized distinction between shallow and deep externalism. The difference is between starting points: shallowly externalist
hypotheses begin with the attribution of psychological states to individuals, just as individualistic hypotheses do, whereas
deeply externalistic hypotheses begin with agent-environment interaction as the basis of cognitive processes and attribute
psychological states to individuals as necessary for such interaction. The over-arching aim is to show how deep externalism
works and what its implications are for psychological and philosophical theorizing.

In his article ‘A New View of Language, Emotion and the Brain,’ Dan Shanahan claims that the post-war Cognitive Turn focused
mainly on information processing and that little attention was paid to the dramatic role played by emotion in human cognition.
One key argument in his defence of a more comprehensive view of human cognition rests upon the idea that the process of symbolization—a
unique capacity only developed by humans—combines, right from the start, information processing and feelings. The author argues
that any theory ignoring this fact would miss the whole point, just as mainstream cognitive science has done since Noam Chomsky
published Syntactic Structures, exactly 50 years ago.

I would like to deal with a process that numbers are generated by the interaction between consciousness and memory, associated
with time with a finite width. It is pointed out that this process can be related with the emergence of preafference. It is
concluded that only humans can create numbers, whereas animals simply produce ‘random’ sequences of symbols because they lack
intentionality to search for an appropriate internal observation window that makes intention and memory compatible.

Motor abstraction: a neuroscientific account of how action goals and intentions are mapped and understood 总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
Vittorio Gallese 《Psychological research》2009,73(4):486-498
Recent findings in cognitive neuroscience shed light on the existence of a common neural mechanism that could account for
action and intention to understand abilities in humans and non-human primates. Empirical evidence on the neural underpinnings
of action goals and on their ontogeny and phylogeny is introduced and discussed. It is proposed that the properties of the
mirror neuron system and the functional mechanism describing them, embodied simulation, enabled pre-linguistic forms of action
and intention understanding. Basic aspects of social cognition appear to be primarily based on the motor cognition that underpins
one’s own capacity to act, here defined as motor abstraction. On the basis of this new account of the motor system, it is
proposed that intersubjectivity is the best conceived of as intercorporeity.

Enactive appraisal 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Giovanna Colombetti 《Phenomenology and the Cognitive Sciences》2007,6(4):527-546
Emotion theorists tend to separate “arousal” and other bodily events such as “actions” from the evaluative component of emotion
known as “appraisal.” This separation, I argue, implies phenomenologically implausible accounts of emotion elicitation and
personhood. As an alternative, I attempt a reconceptualization of the notion of appraisal within the so-called “enactive approach.”
I argue that appraisal is constituted by arousal and action, and I show how this view relates to an embodied and affective
notion of personhood.

We naturally think of the material world as being populated by a large number of individuals. These are things, such as my laptop and the particles that compose it, that we describe as being propertied and related
in various ways when we describe the material world around us. In this paper I argue that, fundamentally speaking at least,
there are no such things as material individuals. I then propose and defend an individual-less view of the material world
I call “generalism”.

This article explores Derrida's claim that teaching is a deconstructive process. In order to explore this claim, the Derridean
concept of "erasure" is explored. Using the concept of erasure, this article examines two important aspects of teaching: the
name that teachers establish for themselves, and, teaching against social power from a Derridean (erasure-oriented) perspective.
Ultimately, the paper confirms Derrida's claim that teaching is indeed a deconstructive practice.

In this paper we discuss visualizations in mathematics from a historical and didactical perspective. We consider historical
debates from the 17th and 19th centuries regarding the role of intuition and visualizations in mathematics. We also consider
the problem of what a visualization in mathematical learning can achieve. In an empirical study we investigate what mathematical
conclusions university students made on the basis of a visualization. We emphasize that a visualization in mathematics should
always be considered in its proper context.
