We present a set of texture parameters that correspond to perceptual properties of visual texture. For machine vision or a computer interface, it is important that the computational measurements of texture correspond well to the perceptual properties. To understand the mechanism of our visual system, it is important to know how we extract or characterize information for texture perception. In this study, we show that the autocorrelation function (ACF) analysis provides useful measures for representing three salient perceptual properties of texture: contrast, coarseness, and regularity. The validity of the ACF analysis was examined by comparing the calculated factors to the subjective scores collected for various kinds of natural textures. The effectiveness of the analysis depends on the structure of the estimated ACF. When a texture has a harmonic structure, the estimated ACF has periodical peaks corresponding to the periods of the texture. Both perceived coarseness and regularity are strongly related to these peaks in the ACF. However, the estimated ACF does not have a periodical structure when the texture is random. In this case, the texture coarseness and regularity are represented by the decay rate of the ACF.  相似文献

Vision provides us with an ever-changing neural representation of the world from which we must extract stable object categorizations. We argue that visual analysis involves a fundamental interaction between the observer's top-down categorization goals and the incoming stimulation. Specifically, we discuss the information available for categorization from an analysis of different spatial scales by a bank of flexible, interacting spatial-frequency (SF) channels. We contend that the activity of these channels is not determined simply bottom-up by the stimulus. Instead, we argue that, following perceptual learning a specification of the diagnostic, object-based, SF information dynamically influences the top-down processing of retina-based SF information by these channels. Our analysis of SF processing provides a case study that emphasizes the continuity between higher-level cognition and lower-level perception.  相似文献

The paper presents the field of Visual Sociology as an approach that makes use of photographs, films, documentaries, videos, to capture and assess aspects of social life and social signals. It overviews some relevant works in the field, it deals with methodological and epistemological issues, by raising the question of the relation between the observer and the observed, and makes reference to some methods of analysis, such as those proposed by the Grounded Theory, and to some connected tools for automatic qualitative analysis, like NVivo. Summary A recognition experiment with a set of simple visual patterns was performed. The patterns were composed of three binary features: Lines, angles and curve segments. The pattern sets differed with respect to the distance between components and the symmetry of the arrangement. The empirical confusion matrices were analysed assuming two different models: A model assuming independent feature analysis and a model that assumes that one of the features is analysed independently of the other two. The main result was that quite a large distance between features was necessary to achieve independent processing of the features. Moreover, in the asymmetric pattern set the predictions of the independence model were better than in the symmetric pattern set.  相似文献

Goodale and Milner's two visual system hypothesis is an influential model for the understanding of the primate visual system. Lesions of either the ventral (occipito‐temporal) or the dorsal (occipito‐parietal) stream produce distinct and dissociated syndromes in humans: visual agnosia is typical for ventral damage, whereas optic ataxia (OA) for dorsal damage. We studied the case of a 59‐year‐old left‐handed woman with a circumscribed lesion around the left posterior occipital sulcus, extending to the underlying white matter. Initially, she presented with a central visual field OA, which regressed to an OA to the right visual hemifield during the 3 months observation period. In addition, tachistoscopic experiments showed visual hemiagnosia to the right visual hemifield. In line with the findings of the neuropsychological experiments, the analysis of the structural MR data by means of a trackwise hodologic probabilistic approach revealed damage to the left superior longitudinal fasciculus and to the left inferior longitudinal fasciculus, indicating an impairment of both the dorsal and the ventral stream. The combination of OA and visual hemiagnosia in the same patient has never been previously described. The present case study thus provides further insights for the understanding of visual processing.  相似文献

Material is presented from three analyses involving the impact on adult functioning of childhood trauma to the visual system. The clinical process by which unrecognized but ongoing traumatic reactions are identified for subsequent analysis is described. It is of particular importance, with these patients, to recognize their lifelong experience of visual confusion resulting from problems in their visual anatomy. Only then can fantasies and affects related to these physically induced states of confusion be worked through. Working through these reactions promotes the neutralization of related primitive narcissistic affects, mourning, and realistic accommodation, and leads to a more intact and integrated sense of self, and a marked increase in self-esteem. With this newly integrated sense of self, the complex interaction between physically induced confusion states and more typical developmental conflicts with objects can be worked through, resulting in more realistic and intense cathexes of the external world. The trauma suffered by these patients had been greatly compounded by its having gone unrecognized. To miss this yet again in an analysis is to repeat the past and retraumatize the patient. These findings have clear implications for patients with other biologically related symptoms (e.g., ADD, ADHD, and dyslexia).  相似文献

The encoding of simple features such as lines and angles leads naturally to size and position invariance when these features are analyzed symbolically in terms of structure and connectedness. No such analysis is possible for a spatial frequency encoding, however, as all a priori indications of pattern unity are lost. An additional transformation of spatial frequency information is therefore demonstrated that automatically derives a size invariant representation of form. The feasibility of the transform scheme in the visual system is outlined with a hypothetical processing sequence. It is found that the organization of cells in the striate cortex shows a marked similarity to an intermediate stage of the proposed sequence.  相似文献

Visual stimuli contain a limited amount of information that could potentially be used to perform a given visual task. At successive stages of visual processing, some of this information is lost and some is transmitted to higher stages. This article describes a new analysis, based on the concept of the ideal observer in signal detection theory, that allows one to trace the flow of discrimination information through the initial physiological stages of visual processing, for arbitrary spatio-chromatic stimuli. This ideal-observer analysis provides a rigorous means of measuring the information content of visual stimuli and of assessing the contribution of specific physiological mechanisms to discrimination performance. Here, the analysis is developed for the physiological mechanisms up to the level of the photoreceptor. It is shown that many psychophysical phenomena previously attributed to neural mechanisms may be explained by variations in the information content of the stimuli and by preneural mechanisms.  相似文献

Four experiments were conducted in order to study the segmentation process in a visual search task with relevant stimuli (target and distractors) randomly distributed among textural elements. The basic idea was that a parallel segmentation process of the relevant stimuli would contribute to the overall reaction time independently of the contribution of the number of relevant stimuli. In the first experiment, with relevant stimuli and textural elements that differed in the orientation of their component lines, texture presence interacted with number of relevant stimuli and with target presence. These results were not favorable to the parallel segmentation hypothesis. In the second and third experiments, in which the relevant and the textural stimuli differed in orientation and in the luminance contrast of their component lines, the results support a parallel segmentation process for the higher contrast conditions. In these experiments, the effect of texture presence was greater on target-absent than on target-present trials. Experiment 4 shows that the search can be restricted to the high-contrast relevant stimuli when the number of these stimuli is constant and the number of textural stimuli changes from trial to trial. The present results suggest that the relevant stimuli can be segmented in parallel and then submitted to a restricted analysis, even when they are scattered among textural stimuli.  相似文献

Performance on the visual paired-comparison (VPC) task has typically been interpreted with E. Sokolov's (1963) comparator model of the orienting response; novelty preferences are interpreted as evidence of retention, whereas null preferences are interpreted as evidence of forgetting. Here the authors capitalized on the verbal nature of human adults to clarify the interpretation of visual preferences in VPC performance. In 2 experiments, adults were tested on either the VPC task or a forced-choice recognition task after delays of 3 min to 12 months. In Experiment 1, adults tested on the VPC task exhibited novelty preferences after short delays, null preferences after intermediate delays, and familiarity preferences after long delays. In Experiment 2, adults tested on the forced-choice recognition task exhibited high levels of accuracy irrespective of delay, but the latency with which they recognized the stimuli increased systematically over the retention interval. These data are inconsistent with a simple Sokolovian interpretation of VPC performance and instead suggest that memory may be expressed as a novelty preference, null preference, or familiarity preference depending on the accessibility of the representation.  相似文献

Recent studies argued that unconscious visual information could access the working memory, however, it is still unclear whether the central executive could be activated unconsciously. We investigated, using a delayed match-to-sample task, whether the central executive is an unconscious process. In the experiment of the present study, participants were asked to compare the locations of two given visual targets. Both targets (or one of the two targets, depending on the experimental condition) were masked by a visual masking paradigm. The results showed an above-chance-level performance even in the condition that participants compared two unconscious targets. However, when the trials with the non-visual conscious experience of the target were removed from the analysis, the performance was no longer significantly different from chance level. Our results suggest that the central executive could be activated unconsciously by some level of stimulus signal, that is still below the threshold for a subjective report.  相似文献

An implication of the data analysis and presentation of Podgorny and Shepard (1983) is that subjects are able to attend simultaneously to more than one square of a grid display when the squares are separated by unattended areas: Attention to such nonunitary areas produces similar benefits as attention to unitary areas. These benefits are reflected in reaction times (RTs), which were reported by Podgorny and Shepard (1983) as being related to a measure of spatial dispersion (compactness) of the attended areas, but this measure does not signify whether these areas are unitary or not. A reanalysis of part of Podgorny and Shepard's (1983) data shows that RTs to attended and unattended squares are almost identical when the attended areas are nonunitary. This reanalysis also shows that RTs are related to compactness for unitary attended areas but that this relation breaks down when attention is focused on nonunitary areas. In addition, Podgorny and Shepard's (1983) data are presented in a way that demonstrates the importance of the actual grid location of probes on RTs. The failure of compactness to reflect these aspects of the spatial nature of attention suggests that this metric is deficient when applied to the study of the spatial determinants of attention.  相似文献

An earlier paper examined a visual-search task that required a S to locate a two-digit symbol from an array of digits. The results were not subjected to a detailed theoretical analysis. The present paper suggests an information-theory analysis of the data and shows that all of the data can be reduced to a consistent format. It is also argued that such an analysis may prove fruitful in the investigation of search strategies.  相似文献

We studied the influence of variations of stimulus size upon recognition of words and faces. Size played an important role in the recognition of faces but was irrelevant to the recognition of words, over a range of sizes. More detailed analysis revealed that although irrelevant to recognition, size of words was nevertheless encoded, with some consequences similar to those for recognition of faces. The results were interpreted in terms of stimulus-specific analyses, and this view was contrasted with other notions of mental representation.  相似文献

The image and visual analysis of geneograms (family trees) drawn by subjects during the course of experiential seminars is described. Case examples are given which suggest that the visual features of the geneogram may provide useful pointers towards the exploration of relevant individual and family issues. What information underwrites visual anticipation skill in dynamic sport situations? We examined this question on the premise that the optical information used for anticipation resides in the dynamic motion structures, or modes, that are inherent in the observed kinematic patterns. In Experiment 1, we analyzed whole-body movements involved in tennis shots to different directions and distances by means of principal component analysis. The shots differed in the few modes that captured most of the variance, especially as a function of shot direction. In Experiments 2 and 3, skilled and less skilled tennis players were asked to anticipate the direction of simulated shots on the basis of kinematic patterns in which only the constituent dynamic structures were manipulated. The results indicated that players predicted shot direction by picking up the information contained in multiple low-dimensional dynamic modes, suggesting that anticipation skill in tennis entails the extraction of this dynamic information from high-dimensional displays.  相似文献

This study reports two Hebrew-speaking individuals with acquired visual dyslexia. They made predominantly visual errors in reading, in all positions of the target words. Although both of them produced visual errors, their reading patterns crucially differed in three respects. KD had almost exclusively letter substitutions, and SF also made letter omissions, additions, letter position errors, and between-word migrations. KD had difficulties accessing abstract letter identity in single-letter tasks, and in letter naming, unlike SF, who named letters well. KD did not show lexical effects such as frequency and orthographic neighbourhood effects and produced nonword responses, whereas SF showed lexical effects, with a strong tendency to produce word responses. We suggest that these two patterns stem from two different deficits - KD has letter identity visual dyslexia, which results from a deficit in abstract letter identification in the orthographic-visual analysis system, yielding erroneous letter identities, whereas SF has visual-output dyslexia, which results from a deficit at a later stage, a stage that combines the outputs of the various functions of the orthographic-visual analyzer.  相似文献
