Classical pairings of a sound stilulus with shock elicited larger magnitude and more rapidly conditioned autonomic responses when subjects were responding on variable-interval schedules for food than when they were eating freely available food. Abstract Anticipatory nausea and vomiting (ANV), as a side-effect of cancer chemotherapy, is a well recognized phenomenon. The literature is reviewed for data on: prevalence rates, factors contributing to onset and psychological treatments used to attempt a remission in the symptoms. From the available evidence it appears that ANV is a substantial problem with one major review indicating an average combined prevalence of 32%. Although explicable using a conditioning model it has a complex aetiology with emotional and cognitive elements, as well as specific pharmacological factors, playing a role in onset. ANV appears to be responsive to psychologically-based treatment methods, with a good outcome overall. However, more process evaluation is needed in order to understand aetiologic and treatment mechanisms and to determine how best to treat cases of ANV with different aetiologies. It is considered that procedures for identifying and referring patients with ANV should be routinely incorporated into the care of cancer patients receiving repeated cycles of chemotherapy. 相似文献

In this paper we review the evidence linking the early development of the autonomic nervous system in early childhood to four proximal risk factors: maternal stress during pregnancy, maternal substance use during pregnancy, poor-quality parent–child interactions, and specific disruptions in parenting behavior. A clear pattern of altered autonomic function emerges in children exposed to proximal risk, marked by reduced parasympathetic tone under conditions of both homeostasis and challenge, accompanied by increased sympathetic tone in some cases. This pattern of autonomic activity would support increased vigilance and active defense responses, which, in an environment of high proximal risk, may be adaptive in the short-term. However, in the long-term maintaining such a state may impose a high allostatic load. The current paper reviews and interprets the current literature and discusses future directions. 相似文献

Background and objectives: After a previous report demonstrated blunted heart rate (HR) reactivity in association with adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) [Voellmin, A., Winzeler, K., Hug, E., Wilhelm, F. H., Schaefer, V., Gaab, J.,?…?Bader, K. (2015). Blunted endocrine and cardiovascular reactivity in young healthy women reporting a history of childhood adversity. Psychoneuroendocrinology, 51, 58–67. doi: 10.1016/j.psyneuen.2014.09.008], the present analysis aimed at clarifying the role of the sympathetic and parasympathetic branches of the autonomic nervous system in this relationship. Design and Methods: One hundred eighteen healthy young women provided data on ACEs and underwent psychosocial stress testing. Systolic blood pressure (SBP) and respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA, quantified by high-frequency HR variability) were assessed as measures of sympathetic and parasympathetic cardiovascular activity, respectively. A mediation model was calculated to test the indirect effects of ACEs on HR via SBP and RSA. Results: The effect of ACEs on HR reactivity was mediated by SBP reactivity but not by RSA reactivity. ACEs were associated with reduced SBP at rest. Conclusions: ACEs were associated with down-regulation in a measure of sympathetic but no alteration in a measure of parasympathetic cardiovascular stress reactivity in adulthood. Future research will need to clarify whether this indicates risk or resilience. 相似文献

Background and Objectives: Emotion regulation involves attempts to influence emotion unfolding and may target experiential, expressive and physiological responses. Several strategies can be used, such as reappraisal (re-evaluating the emotional situation to reduce its emotional meaning) or distraction (turning the attention toward non-emotional aspects of the situation). Previous research on these regulation strategies produced contrasting results regarding their efficiency and we hypothesize that this could be due to individual differences such as trait anxiety. Design and Methods: Participants (N?=?77) were confronted with negative pictures and we examined the differential emotional reactivity according to trait anxiety, followed by a comparison of the efficiency of reappraisal and distraction in reducing emotional responses. Results: Results show that trait anxiety has no impact on reactivity at the experiential and expressive levels, but has an impact at the physiological level, where high anxiety individuals show increased cardiac orienting effect, as well as higher skin conductance and respiratory rate. Regarding regulation, reappraisal and distraction successfully reduce emotional experience and expressivity, but not physiological arousal. Conclusions: Such contrasting results involve that high trait anxiety individuals might benefit from the use of other kinds of strategies than reappraisal and distraction, some that may successfully target physiological responses. 相似文献

The aim of the current study was to review the extent that physical health, treatment and psychological factors contribute to cognitive dysfunction after chemotherapy for breast cancer. PubMed, Medline and PsychINFO searches of the literature published from 1995 to 2008 pertaining to chemotherapy for breast cancer and cognitive dysfunction were reviewed. There is currently insufficient evidence available to evaluate the effect of indirect factors (health, treatment and psychological) on cognitive functioning after chemotherapy. Fatigue and changes in endocrine function are the most frequently investigated factors, although conclusions are limited due to methodological shortcomings. The impact of other health and treatment factors has been inadequately addressed, with many variables examined in only one of the 22 reviewed studies. Importantly, although depression and anxiety can significantly influence neuropsychological test performance, mood has been inconsistently measured and analysed in regards to cognitive performance in this literature. In addition, indirect factors may affect cognitive domains differently, requiring further investigation of specific domains after chemotherapy. Because chemotherapy can negatively affect numerous organ systems and as yet no systematic investigations of health, treatment or psychological factors have been conducted, the authors conclude that it is currently premature to attribute all cognitive change after chemotherapy treatment to cytotoxic drugs. 相似文献
