We report on a simulation study with 72 student subjects as well as on an inquiry of 58 patients on the doctor-patient interaction. We were especially interested in inferences that patients draw from general practitioners' behaviors, i.e., their warmth, their kind of talk, and their embarrassment. The simulation study as well as the inquiry reveal patients' inferences that were highly consistent in 9 (out of 16) dependent variables. Patients' inferences on the state of the disease, on the doctor's competence, interest and warmth, on the doctor's kind of talk and sympathy, all consistently depended on the doctor's behaviors. The psychological as well as medical implications of these results are discussed.  相似文献

The present essay focuses on the relation between conversation and culture. Through a reading of Plato's "Symposium," it highlights a conversation which reflects on culture while in its midst, combining critique with erotic ritual. Eros, the selected topic of the Symposium, is described by Socrates as a Daimon, a being between God and mortal, whose intermediary state reflects back on conversation itself as daimonic, and on culture as daimonic conversation. This notion of conversation serves as a basis for a cultural critique, on the one hand, of an anthropology that limits itself to an observation of culture as closed and defined forms and, on the other hand, of demonic rather than daimonic notions of conversation.  相似文献

Researchers, including Needham (2001, this issue), have found that infants as young as 4.5 months of age have the ability to use featural information to segregate objects. However, considerable research on infants' perception of color, shape, size, orientation, and so on has shown that infants younger than 4.5 months are capable of using these featural cues to discriminate between objects or other test items. Infants as young as 2 months of age also can perceive a moving object as unified. In this article, we argue for an information processing explanation of these results, which centers on the development of infants' ability to integrate both featural and object information. The proposed explanation is based upon L. B. Cohen's (1991, 1998) information processing propositions and is consistent with the evidence on object segregation as well as evidence from our laboratory and others' on infant perception and cognition.  相似文献

After having identified several shortcomings of the so‐called ‘standard accounts’ of shared intentions, this paper will develop a novel framework for understanding such intentions. The framework to be advanced hinges on a notion of ‘expression’, as well as on the claim that shared intentions are expressed—that is, manifested, grasped, shaped and clarified—throughout the unfolding of the joint actions they animate, as well as in the various expressive activities and behaviours that accompany joint action. This claim will be defended with particular reference to the work of Charles Taylor on expression, as well as recent work on embodied cognition.  相似文献

In this paper I explore the connection between narrative ethics and the increasing emphasis on historical consciousness as a way to cultivate moral responsibility in history education. I use Timothy Findley’s World War I novel, The Wars, as an example of how teachers might help students to see history neither simply as a collection of artefacts from the past, nor as an effort to construct an objective view about what went on in those other times and places, but rather as something that makes ethical demands on us here and now. Theoretically, this paper draws on Adam Zachary Newton’s conception of narrative ethics and Roger Simon’s conception of historical consciousness, both of which rest on the Levinasian themes of irreducible difference, the face, and subjectivity as a position of ethical responsibility to and for the other.  相似文献

The purpose of this experiment was to determine whether performance on a subsequent exam was affected when two lessons were as similar as possible except that one was presented in class and the other was presented online. In a hybrid course, half of the lessons were presented in the classroom as narrated Power Point presentations and half of the lessons were presented online as narrated Power Point presentations. Online student–teacher interaction took place in a chatroom. Furthermore, for each question on the midterm or final examination, the students had answered a pre-lesson and post-lesson question, integrated with the appropriate lesson, which queried the same fact statement as the exam question. Students performed better on post-lesson questions asked in class than post-lesson questions asked online. They also performed better on exam questions on classroom lessons than exam questions on online lessons. The results support the conclusion that social interaction aids learning.  相似文献

Drawing on past experiences and understandings of children’s spirituality, as well as research regarding in-service teacher’s views on facilitating spirituality in the classroom, this article explores teacher candidates’ thoughts on spirituality, their position as it having a place or not in the classroom and how, if so, would they incorporate it to facilitate spirituality for the children they teach. Methods for gathering data include exposing teacher candidates to definitions of spirituality, theory, research and different views on children’s spirituality, as well as using prompt questions to facilitate an online discussion on perceptions of spirituality in the classroom. The findings gathered show teacher candidates deem spirituality as important, and as having a place in early childhood education. Appreciation of nature, reflection and pondering, meditation practices and yoga were the suggested strategies made by teacher candidates, in order to incorporate and nourish children’s spirituality in the classroom.  相似文献

Psychotherapy as a profession can be analysed from two different theoretical points of view: as far as social conditions are concerned the author profits on the one hand from a system-theoretical approach in treating the health-system as a social system; on the other hand and as far as the inner conditions of psychotherapeutic work are concerned, basic assumptions of psychoanalytic self-psychology may be helpful to demonstrate and understand the special character of psychotherapy as a “people-changing-profession”. This special status historically refers to medical treatment as a communicative practice. Actually the psychotherapeutic self seems to split itself up into many competing directions and thereby weakens its possible impact on the health-system.  相似文献

Normal adult rats lived on powdered diets adulterated to contain as much as 1.6% quinine sulfate, on a palatable high-fat diet, or in Skinner boxes with 45-mg Noyes pellets available on fixed-ratio (FR) schedules as high as FR 156. They maintained lower body weights over periods of months in proportion to the percentage of quinine adulteration or the fixed ratio. Rats exposed to the high-fat diet overate as much and gained weight as rapidly as rats recovering from food deprivation, and became moderately obese. Rats having become lean or obese contingent on the palatability or accessibility of their diet defended body weight by eating more in the cold, less when force-fed by gavage, and more to restore weight after food deprivation. Yet on chow they restored and defended body weights typical of rats whose diet had been confined to commercially prepared chow. These results are interpreted to be inconsistent with motivational models that rigidly distinguish drive from incentive, that treat body weight changes as evidence for failure to regulate energy balance or body weight, or that rely exclusively on deprivation of food or reduction of body weight for definitions of need for calories. Instead, caloric homeostasis in rats may incorporate ecological constraints.  相似文献

In six experiments, rats were placed on a heated plate on two occasions (test and retest), and the latencies with which they licked their paws were taken as an index of their sensitivity to nociceptive stimulation. Experiment 1 provided evidence that rats were selectively analgesic on retest depending upon the intensity of the heat experienced on the initial test. Experiment 2 showed that this analgesia was recruited rapidly and was long-lasting, as it was observed when retest was scheduled as early as 0.2 and as late as 48 h after the initial exposure to the hot-plate. Experiment 3 documented a role for conditioning processes, as this analgesia was removed by an extinction-like procedure conducted between test and retest. Experiments 4 and 5 provided evidence for a non-opioid mechanism of pain control, because the analgesia was not diminished by the opioid antagonist, naloxone, nor by a history of morphine injections. These experiments also revealed that the analgesia observed on retest was enhanced and reduced when rats were given naloxone and morphine, respectively, on the initial test. Finally, Experiment 6 showed that the analgesia on retest summated with that produced by morphine. The results were taken to mean that the hot-plate assay for analgesia can itself activate endogenous mechanisms of pain control, and some speculations were offered as to how this occurred.  相似文献

Since the positive effects of stimulants on disruptive behavior were described (Bradley & Bowen, 1941), further pediatric studyhas been limited almost exclusively to samples of hyperkinetic school-age children. Because these agents normally were viewed as arousing in their effects on the central nervous system, but were calming in their therapeutic effects on these children, stimulant effects on Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) were interpreted as being 'paradoxical.' Investigation of effects in normal children and adolescents and in those with disorders unrelated to Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), as well as in young adult samples, however, indicate that stimulants appear to have similar behavioral effects in normal and in hyperactive children. This brief report is an update (as of August 2002) on studies of stimulants in ADHD and normal children, with particular focus on MPH.  相似文献

研究以“医患冲突”为载体,采用竞争反应时范式(CRT)和故事补全范式(SCP),探讨社会偏见和群际威胁在群际冲突发生过程中的作用。结果表明:(1)“医生”被试中,社会偏见在CRT和SCP两个指标上均具显著主效应,而“患者”被试中,社会偏见仅在CRT范式“惩罚持续时间”指标上主效应显著;(2)群际威胁在CRT和SCP指标上的主效应均显著。研究发现,在群际冲突发生过程中,社会偏见的作用具有“方向效应”,而群际威胁变量发挥着显著而直接的影响。  相似文献

This paper explores the analysis of an obese woman who came to experience her flesh as a bodying forth of personal and multigenerational family and cultural experiences of helplessness. The paper discusses the ideas and images that formed the basis of how I engaged with these themes as they presented countertransferentially. My thesis is that clinical approaches which draw on spatial metaphors for the psyche offer valuable tools for working with people whose inner world expresses itself somatically because such metaphors can be used to engage simultaneously with the personal, cultural, and ancestral dimensions of these unconscious communications. The paper builds on Jung's view of the psyche as comprised of pockets of inner otherness (complexes), on Redfearn's image of psyche as landscape‐like and on Samuels’ thinking on embodied countertransference and on the political psyche. It also draws on Butler's work on the body as a social phenomenon and on the theme of being a helpless non‐person or nobody as explored in Tom Stoppard's play Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead which retells Shakespeare's Hamlet from the perspective of two of the play's ‘bit’ characters.  相似文献

ABSTRACT— Humans perceive and act on risk in two fundamental ways. Risk as feelings refers to individuals' instinctive and intuitive reactions to danger. Risk as analysis brings logic, reason, and scientific deliberation to bear on risk management. Reliance on risk as feelings is described as "the affect heuristic." This article traces the development of this heuristic and discusses some of the important ways that it impacts how people perceive and evaluate risk.  相似文献

This study examined the combined effects of age-based self-categorization and aging expectations on cognitive performance in a clinical context. An experimental study manipulated older adults' salient self-categorization as Younger or Older, as well as expectations that aging involves a specific memory decline versus generalized cognitive decline. Memory and general ability tests that are typically used in dementia screening were then administered. As predicted, self-categorization as Older dramatically reduced performance, but the measure on which this effect was revealed depended on aging expectations. Participants who self-categorized as Older and expected memory to decline performed worse on memory tests. Conversely, participants who self-categorized as Older and expected widespread cognitive decline performed worse on the general ability test. The clinical implications for the latter group were profound, because 70% met the diagnostic criterion for dementia, compared with an average of 14% in other conditions. Concurrent variable-ratio schedules of electrical brain stimulation, food, and water were paired in various combinations as reinforcement of rats' lever presses. Relative prices of the concurrent reinforcers were varied by changing the ratio of the response requirements on the two levers. Economic substitutability, measured by the sensitivity of response ratio to changes in relative price, was highest with brain stimulation reinforcement of presses on both levers and lowest with food reinforcement of presses on one lever and water reinforcement of presses on the other. Substitutability with brain stimulation reinforcement of presses on one lever and either food or water reinforcement for presses on the other was about as high as with brain stimulation for presses on both levers. Electrical brain stimulation for rats may thus serve as an economic substitute for two reinforcers, neither of which is substitutable for the other.  相似文献

Previous studies have shown that the effects of a particular class of geometric transformations, known as cardioidal strain, are perceived as growth when applied to a variety of animate and even inanimate objects. The current study demonstrates that the effects of these growth transformations are not completely independent of the object undergoing change, but depend critically on certain structural characteristics. When cardioidal strain is applied to a straight-line, right-angle, robotlike structure, there is no consistent effect on the age level of the figure. However, as the structural contours become more curved and less angular, the effects of this transformation are seen as increasingly more like growth. In contrast, the effects of a shear transformation are not perceived as growth on any of the profiles. These findings are examined in light of the critical physical properties that may be responsible for this notion of biological forms as well as their implications for our understanding of the information about events.  相似文献
