ObjectiveThe purpose of this study was to reexamine the relationship between identity and athletic retirement using a longitudinal, prospective design.MethodOne-on-one, in-depth interviews were conducted with three male and three female university student athletes at three times: at the outset of their last season of competition, approximately 1 month after their retirement, and approximately 1 year later. The unstructured raw data was analyzed inductively following procedures established in the literature [Côté, Salmela, Baria, & Russell (1993). Organizing and interpreting unstructured qualitative data. The Sport Psychologist, 7, 127–137; Côté, Salmela, & Russell (1995). The knowledge of high-performance gymnastic coaches: Methodological framework. The Sport Psychologist, 9, 65–75; Miller & Kerr (2002a). The athletic, academic, and social experiences of intercollegiate student-athletes. Journal of Sport Behavior, 25, 346–367].ResultsThe findings revealed the participants committed themselves strongly to their athletic goals and anticipated disrupted identities upon retirement. As a result, they employed several coping strategies including the proactive diminishment of their athletic identities prior to retirement. Decreasing the prominence of their athletic identities precluded a major identity crisis or confusion upon and following athletic retirement.ConclusionsThe study concludes that the redefinition of self long before sport career termination may protect one's identity during this transition process.  相似文献

The first Lithuanians to be introduced to philosophy were young members of the gentry who studied in European universities at the end of the 14th century. The recently christened Lithuania strove to adopt Western culture and to present itself as a Western state. At the end of the 14th century, the Vilnius Cathedral School was founded. The elements of logic were probably taught there. The growth of the political and economic power of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania brought about the need for higher education. The need was significantly increased by the growing activity of various religious orders. In 1507, the Dominicans started teaching philosophy and theology to their novices in Vilnius. They taught late medieval philosophy in its Thomistic interpretation. We can regard 1507 as the year Lithuania began to benefit from a new phenomenon, professional philosophy, with the Dominicans as its initiators. The Dominicans and later the Jesuits, Franciscans, Benedictines, Carmelites, Trinitarians, and other monastic orders enriched intellectual life in Lithuania by teaching philosophy in their schools. The most important event in the development of philosophy in Lithuania was the foundation of Vilnius University in 1579. The disciplines belonging to scholasticism of the second level were taught in its philosophy department.

The soft tissue artifact (STA) is a phenomenon occurring when the motion of bones or anatomical segments is measured by means of skin markers: the biological tissues between the markers and the bone produce a relative motion bone-markers that leads to inaccuracies in the estimation of rigid body poses or kinematics. The aim of this study was to quantify the STA by exploiting a recently published gait analysis dataset. The dataset was composed of six adult subjects with a total knee arthroplasty who underwent gait analysis trials. The motion of the knee was concurrently recorded by means of (i) fluoroscopy imaging and (ii) an optoelectronic system and redundant markers attached to the thigh and shank. The STA was studied by comparing the results calculated on the marker sets with the results obtained from the fluoroscopy data. The stance and swing phases were considered separately. Rigid STA motion and local STA deformation were studied separately. In addition to previous studies, the instantaneous helical axis (IHA) of the knee was calculated and the effect of the STA on its calculation was assessed. The largest rigid-motion STA effect was observed on the thigh cluster (~10 deg. and ~ 18 mm). The shank cluster was mainly affected during the swing phase (~7 deg. and ~ 17 mm). The local STA deformation affected differently the markers. The largest effect was ~16 mm and the lowest was ~4 mm. The estimation of the IHA was not reliable when based only on markers, having an estimation error of ~17 deg. and ~ 25 mm. A high variability of results across subjects was observed.  相似文献
