Diazepam-induced impairment of a go-no go successive discrimination   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Diazepam (2.0 and 4.0 mg/kg, but not 1.0 mg/kg) administered in eight acquisition sessions significantly impaired the light-cued successive discrimination of male Sprague-Dawley rats. In two postdrug (vehicle) sessions, groups previously treated with the drug demonstrated good recovery in discrimination. An analysis of response components indicated that the impairment was due to the failure of drugged subjects to inhibit or withhold responses during the no go periods of the task. These findings are consistent with a "disinhibitory hypothesis" of drug impairment. The similarity of the present findings to those previously reported with chlordiazepoxide suggests that such effects are a generalized characteristic of the benzodiazepine class of drugs.  相似文献

In the present study we investigated lateralization of color reversal learning in pigeons. After monocular acquisition of a simple color discrimination with either the left or right eye, birds were tested in a serial reversal procedure. While there was only a slight and non-significant difference in choice accuracy during original color discrimination, a stable superiority of birds using the right eye emerged in serial reversals. Both groups showed a characteristic ‘learning-to-learn’ effect, but right-eyed subjects improved faster and reached a lower asymptotic error rate. Subsequent testing for interocular transfer demonstrated a difference between pre- and post-shift choice accuracy in pigeons switching from right to left eye but not vice versa. This can be accounted for by differences in maximum performance using either the left or right eye along with an equally efficient but incomplete interocular transfer in both directions. Detailed analysis of the birds’ response patterns during serial reversals revealed a preference for the right of two response keys in both groups. This bias was most pronounced at the beginning of a session. It decreased within sessions, but became more pronounced in late reversals, thus indicating a successful strategy for mastering the serial reversal task. Interocular transfer of response patterns revealed an unexpected asymmetry. Birds switching from right to left eye continued to prefer the right side, whereas pigeons shifting from left to right eye were now biased towards the left side. The results suggest that lateralized performance during reversal learning in pigeons rests on a complex interplay of learning about individual stimuli, stimulus dimensions, and lateralized response strategies. Melodic and harmonic discrimination following unilateral cerebral excision   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Seventy-seven subjects who had undergone unilateral temporal, frontal, or frontotemporal lobectomy for the relief of focal epilepsy as well as a group of 20 normal control subjects were tested in two discrimination tasks, requiring the detection of a single-note change in a pattern of three notes played either successively or simultaneously. Patients with right temporal and right frontotemporal excisions demonstrated a significant deficit in melodic discrimination in comparison to the normal control subjects. Further analysis showed that left-temporal lobectomy including excision of Heschl's gyri (the primary auditory receiving area) led to a significant impairment as well, whereas anterior left temporal-lobe damage did not result in a significant deficit. The results suggest that melodic discrimination depends largely but not exclusively on the right temporal lobe, and that the left Heschl's gyri also seem to be necessary to succeed in this task. In the harmonic task, the differences between the groups did not reach significance, although the two tasks were highly correlated.  相似文献

A new technique was developed to study the repeated acquisition of conditional discriminations. Using a discrete trial procedure, pigeons were required to learn during each session a different two-member chain of conditional discriminations. Key color and geometric forms were used as stimuli. After the pigeons had reached a steady state of relearning (40 to 60 sessions), the technique was used to investigate variables that have previously been shown to affect the repeated acquisition of response sequences. Various (0 to 90 seconds) durations of timeout for errors were investigated in Experiment I. The stimulus change associated with a timeout, rather than its duration, was found to be the critical variable in acquisition of the discrimination. Extended training on a single chain was found to reduce total errors across sessions in Experiment II. Extended training (three sessions) did not, however, change the pattern of within-session error reduction. In some cases, extended training facilitated acquisition of a partially reversed discrimination. In Experiment III, color rather than chain position was found to control behavior, for three of the four birds, as the second stimulus dimension in the conditional situation. The results of these experiments replicate and extend previous findings concerning some of the variables that affect the repeated acquisition of response sequences.  相似文献

This study examined the effects of a dopamine D1 antagonist, SCH23390, infused into the prelimbic–infralimbic areas on the acquisition of a response and visual-cue discrimination task, as well as a shift from a response to a visual-cue discrimination and vice versa. Each test was carried out in a cross-maze. The response discrimination required learning to always turn in the same direction (right or left) for a cereal reinforcement. The visual-cue discrimination required learning to always enter the arm with the visual cue. In experiment 1, rats were tested on the response discrimination task, followed by the visual-cue discrimination task. In experiment 2, the testing order was reversed. Bilateral infusions of SCH23390 (0.1 or 1 μg/0.5 μL) into the prelimbic–infralimbic areas did not impair acquisition of the response or visual-cue discrimination tasks. SCH23390 injections at 1 μg, but not 0.1 μg impaired performance when shifting from a response to a visual-cue discrimination, and vice versa. Analysis of the errors revealed that the deficit was due to perseveration of the previously learned strategy. These results suggest that activation of dopamine D1 receptors in the prelimbic–infralimbic areas may be critical for the suppression of a previously relevant strategy and/or generating new strategies.  相似文献

Chlordiazepoxide (CDP) (5 mg/kg) administered on four of eight sessions significantly impaired the performance of a previously learned, reinforcement-cued discrimination in male Sprague-Dawley rats. On four interspersed vehicle-injection sessions, the performance of subjects demonstrated immediate recovery and was indistinguishable from that of controls (0 mg/kg). An analysis of response components indicated that the impairment in discrimination performance was due to a "disinhibitory" effect of the drug on responding during "no-go" phases of the task. The results are discussed in the context of similarities and differences in the effect of CDP on performance and acquisition.  相似文献

An automated training system was used to compare the behavior of knockout (KO) mice lacking the fragile X mental retardation protein with that of wild-type (WT) mice (C57Bl/6 strain) in the acquisition and retention of olfactory discriminations. KO and WT mice did not differ in the acquisition of a four-stage nose poke shaping procedure. In two separate experiments, mutant mice required substantially more training to acquire a series of novel olfactory discrimination problems than did control mice. The KO mice required significantly more sessions to reach criterion performance, made significantly more errors during training, and more often failed to acquire discriminations. Both KO and WT mice showed similar error patterns when learning novel discriminations and both groups showed evidence of more rapid learning of later discriminations in the problem series. Both groups showed significant long-term memory two or four weeks after training but WT and KO mice did not differ in this regard. A group of well-trained mice were given training on novel odors in sessions limited to 20–80 trials. Memory of these problems at two day delays did not differ between WT and KO mice. Tests using ethyl acetate demonstrated that WT and KO mice had similar odor detection thresholds.  相似文献

Steady and blinking white lights were projected on three nose keys arranged horizontally on one wall. The procedure was a conditional discrimination with a sample stimulus presented on the middle key and comparison stimuli on the side keys. Three rats acquired simultaneous "identity matching." Accuracy reached 80% in about 25 sessions and 90% or higher after about 50 sessions. Acquisition progressed through several stages of repeated errors, alteration between comparison keys from trial to trial, preference of specific keys or stimuli, and a gradual lengthening of strings of consecutive trials with correct responses. An analysis of the acquisition curves for individual trial configurations indicated that the matching-to-sample performance possibly consisted of separate discriminations.  相似文献

gamma-L-glutamyl-L-aspartate (gamma-LGLA), which interacts with NMDA receptors, has been shown to impair retention of an active avoidance task in mice. Here, we specified the behavioral effects of gamma-LGLA on acquisition and retention of appetitive nondelayed visual discrimination tasks. Three experiments were conducted: the peptide (0.25 and 2.5 microM/kg/25 ml. ip) was administered 3 min after each of the first six sessions of either original learning, reversal 1 or reversal 3. gamma-LGLA affected acquisition of the original task and of the first reversal, as revealed by an absence of improvement on initial sessions and an increased number of sessions to reach criterion fixed at 7 of 10 correct choices on three consecutive sessions. This deficit did not result from an action of the peptide on position habits (repetition of spatial choices) nor on motivational processes, suggesting a specific interference of gamma-LGLA with acquisition and memorization of the visual rule. In contrast, gamma-LGLA had no effect on acquisition of the third reversal, in which the positively reinforced visual stimulus was identical to that used on the first reversal. These results show that the behavioral deficits of gamma-LGLA, which had previously been demonstrated in an aversive task, can be generalized to appetitive tasks based on acquisition of a new rule.  相似文献

Chlordiazepoxide (5.0 and 10.0 mg/kg but not 2.5 mg/kg) administered on 10 successive sessions, significantly impaired the reinforcement-cued discrimination performance of male Sprague-Dawley rats. On three postdrug (saline) recovery sessions, groups previously treated with the drug demonstrated good recovery in discrimination performance. An analysis of response components indicated that the discrimination impairment was due to less inhibition of responding during "no-go" phases of the task by the drugged than control animals. While changes in responding during reinforcement phases may also contribute to the performance of drugged animals, no clear pattern emerges from the present study.  相似文献

In two experiments, we investigated the role of apparent motion in discriminating left/right gaze deviation judgments. We demonstrated that discrimination accuracy and response confidence was significantly higher when the eyes were moved to the left or right, compared to when the eyes were presented in their final shifted position (static images). To dissociate the role of motion signals from luminance signals, gaze stimuli were also presented in reverse contrast. Replicating past studies polarity reversal had a profound and detrimental effect on gaze discrimination in static images, although, intriguingly, while response confidence remained low, participant performance improved as gaze angle increased. In striking contrast to these data, polarity reversal had no negative effect on performance when the eyes were moved. We discuss these findings in the context of a multiple-cue account of gaze perception.  相似文献

Limb apraxia errors were compared among normal controls and right- or left-hemisphere-damaged patients as they imitated gestures with the ipsilateral hand. Both brain-damaged groups made similar errors on nonrepresentative and representative/intransitive movements. In contrast for pretended object use movements (transitive), the left-hemisphere-damaged group made more arm position and classical body-part-as-object errors while the right hemisphere group made as many partial errors and more less-primitive, body-part-as-object errors than the left-hemisphere-damaged group. These results help explain why a certain percentage of right-hemisphere-damaged patients are labeled apraxic, but also suggest that the left hemisphere is more important for integrating intrapersonal space and the “representation” of extrapersonal space.  相似文献

Acquisition of a task requiring the imitation of a series of nonverbal oral movements is most severely impaired in patients with aphasic disturbance. However, nonaphasic patients with left hemisphere damage also perform more poorly than patients with right hemisphere damage or normal control subjects. Analysis of the errors made on the multiple oral movements task reveals that left, but not right, hemisphere damage is highly associated with perseverative responses. Patients with right hemisphere damage do not differ significantly from normal control subjects in the acquisition of or in the type of errors made on the task. It is suggested that the left hemisphere plays an important role in the control of nonverbal oral movement production.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted to examine the effects of bilateral hippocampus (Hp) and area parahippocampalis (APH) lesions in pigeons on the acquisition of a visual and spatial task. In Experiment 1, pigeons were trained on three successive six-pair concurrent discrimination tasks, each using a novel set of stimuli. There was no difference between control unoperated pigeons and Hp-APH pigeons in terms of the number of sessions required to learn either the first, second, or third concurrent discrimination task. In Experiment 2, the same pigeons were trained on an open-field spatial task similar in many ways to the radial-arm maze task used with rats. In contrast to the absence of impairments on the visual concurrent discrimination task, pigeons with Hp-APH lesions were severely impaired on the acquisition of the spatial task. These findings support the view that the Hp-APH in pigeons is important for the processing of spatial, rather than visual information.  相似文献

Six pigeons performed an acquisition and three reversals of a discrete trial simultaneous discrimination in which responses to the positive key were reinforced on a fixed-interval 5-s schedule; trials were terminated by either a response to the negative key or the delivery of a reinforcement. In the initial stage of acquisition and each reversal, where errors were most frequent, response rates rose and latencies fell on positive trials; these effects declined as errors decreased. The birds were also run in two yoked control conditions, and results showed that the critical requirement for the positive trial rate and latency changes was neither the simultaneous presentation of two stimuli nor the formation of a discrimination, but the occurrence of non-reinforced responses. The similarity of these phenomena to conventional behavioural contrast is emphasized, and the results are discussed in terms of frustration theory.  相似文献

Different groups of pigeons received discrimination training in which the reinforcement-associated and extinction-associated stimuli were respectively either (a) a line tilt vs a blank key, (b) a blank key vs a line tilt, or (c) two different line tilts. The high response rates that developed to the positive stimulus in all groups during discrimination learning were maintained over 64 sessions of training. After these sessions, all subjects were tested for stimulus generalization along the line-tilt dimension. Gradients of relative (per cent) generalization around the stimulus associated with reinforcement (so-called excitatory gradients) and around the stimulus associated with extinction (so-called inhibitory gradients) were as steep as they typically are after much briefer training periods. These results do not support several of Terrace's predictions on the basis of the hypothesis that emotional responses develop to the stimulus associated with extinction during discrimination learning with errors, but eventually dissipate after extended training.  相似文献

We intended to determine if leftward error of line bisection means "right" or "left" neglect in a patient with left unilateral spatial neglect. The patient placed the subjective midpoint to the left of the true center when bisecting lines without cueing. By contrast, when cued to the left endpoint, he showed typical rightward errors that became greater as longer lines were presented. Cueing to the right endpoint increased leftward errors compared with the bisections without cueing. The results suggest that paradoxical leftward error of line bisection is a form of "left" unilateral spatial neglect in that the shortness of the left extent is ignored.  相似文献

The purpose of the study was to determine whether probes of the final criterion-level discrimination administered during and after training provided an accurate measure of acquisition. Training and probe stimuli were designed to make training and probe trials initially very discriminable and then progressively less discriminable as training progressed. Initially, the discrimination required on probe trials was more difficult than the discrimination required on training trials. However, this difference in difficulty was gradually eliminated as training stimuli were topographically altered and made identical to probe stimuli by the end of training. Results showed that while correct responding was maintained throughout training, error patterns occurred on all probe trials administered during training. Error patterns developed regardless of whether probe trials occurred only at the beginning of training sessions (temporally discriminable probes) or were randomly interspersed in the training sessions (temporally indiscriminable probes). Probe error patterns seemed to be controlled by the stimulus properties of training and probe trials. Thus, probes did not measure acquisition as it occurred during training. Probe error patterns were maintained when probes were administered after completion of training. This final measure of acquisition did not agree with the demonstration of acquisition provided by the final training trial. The results suggest that probe trials can measure a different stimulus-response relationship from that trained when training starts with an easier or known discrimination and probes involve a final or criterion test of a more difficult or unknown discrimination. Stimulus control of correct responses versus error patterns is discussed.  相似文献

Errorless transfer of a discrimination across two continua   总被引:5,自引:4,他引:1       下载免费PDF全文
A procedure developed earlier (Terrace, 1963) successfully trained a red-green discrimination without the occurrence of any errors in 12 out of 12 cases. Errorless transfer from the red-green discrimination to a discrimination between a vertical and a horizontal line was accomplished by first superimposing the vertical and the horizontal lines on the red and green backgrounds, respectively, and then fading out the red and the green backgrounds. Superimposition of the two sets of stimuli without fading, or an abrupt transfer from the first to the second set of stimuli, resulted in the occurrence of errors during transfer. Superimposition, however, did result in some “incidental learning”. Performance following acquisition of the vertical-horizontal discrimination with errors differed from performance following acquisition without errors. If the vertical-horizontal discrimination was learned with errors, the latency of the response to S+ was permanently shortened and errors occurred during subsequent testing on the red-green discrimination even though the red-green discrimination was originally acquired without errors. If the vertical-horizontal discrimination was learned without errors, the latency of the response to S+ was unaffected and no errors occurred during subsequent testing on the red-green discrimination.  相似文献
