ABSTRACT The public controversy over sex-based differentials in insurance pricing makes heavy use of terms like 'fairness' and 'discrimination'; in particular, both sides argue that their position is the one dictated by considerations of fairness. Appeal to a basic principle of distributive justice shows that these differentials are not fair. Nevertheless, there is a substantial ethical argument to be made for the industry's status quo , based on the liberty of the low-risk insurees. The paper considers an alternative reform proposal, with a qualitatively different freedom cost; seven factors are then identified as useful in evaluating the trade-off between the freedom and justice at stake in any questionable insurance classification variable. A brief concluding section attempts to generalise this analysis to provide a broad framework for the analysis of other discrimination issues.  相似文献

The multiplicity of definitions and conceptions of self-regulation that typifies contemporary research on self-regulation in psychology and educational psychology is examined. This examination is followed by critical analyses of theory and research in educational psychology that reveal not only conceptual confusions, but misunderstandings of conceptual versus empirical issues, individualistic biases to the detriment of an adequate consideration of social and cultural contexts, and a tendency to reify psychological states and processes as ontologically foundational to self-regulation. The essay concludes with a consideration of educational research and intervention in the area of students’ self-regulated learning in terms of the scientific and professional interests of psychologists and educators, and the disguised manipulation of student self-surveillance in the service of the institutional mandates of schools.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Ecological dynamics characterizes adaptive behavior as an emergent, self-organizing property of interpersonal interactions in complex social systems. The authors conceptualize and investigate constraints on dynamics of decisions and actions in the multiagent system of team sports. They studied coadaptive interpersonal dynamics in rugby union to model potential control parameter and collective variable relations in attacker–defender dyads. A videogrammetry analysis revealed how some agents generated fluctuations by adapting displacement velocity to create phase transitions and destabilize dyadic subsystems near the try line. Agent interpersonal dynamics exhibited characteristics of chaotic attractors and informational constraints of rugby union boxed dyadic systems into a low dimensional attractor. Data suggests that decisions and actions of agents in sports teams may be characterized as emergent, self-organizing properties, governed by laws of dynamical systems at the ecological scale. Further research needs to generalize this conceptual model of adaptive behavior in performance to other multiagent populations.  相似文献

An important stream of research has recently studied sales force control systems (SFCS). Most studies have relied on a simple conceptualization of control, especially outcome-/behavior-based and formal/informal controls. Because most empirical studies based on such conceptual frameworks have led to contradictory or inconsistent findings, this paper attempts to identify a few important causes, especially management style (centralized or decentralized) and the different managerial objective’s time horizons (short and long run). Relying on an extended definition of an SFCS, the proposed new conceptual framework recognizes the dynamic nature of controls, introduces the concepts of usage intensity, depth of usage, and rigor of enforcement of control and feedback tools. The effects of the SFCS on salespeople’s transactional and customer relationship-building performances are considered. A series of research propositions is proposed.  相似文献

The proposed discrimination model for Q representation is a generalization of the method of unfolding in an algebraic rather than a geometric field. Placements of Q statements relative to one another in joint space so as to form a quasi-normal distribution of the q stimulus items are assigned Q values which form a bounded set of symbols with specified order in arithmetic progression; for example, a finite set from "one" to "nine" wherein "five" is the midpoint of an ordered metric within persons. An algebraic theory of numbers permits mathematical operations to be carried out with sets of sets of such symbols. Using illustrative data, a mathematical model is developed for the analysis of Q values, each of which represents the intersect of two or more dimensions of behavior structured into a Q set, and for testing its stability, consistency, and reliability. The Q check procedures permit comparisons among individuals and subsamples of population samples.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This article elaborates a new direction for studying the construction of novel strategies that enables researchers to model the conceptual underpinnings of students' observable strategic actions during episodes of mathematical problem solving. The nature of the relationship between conceptual and procedural knowledge has been persistently debated for decades. Recently, there has been mounting empirical evidence that conceptual and procedural knowledge can develop by mutual bootstrapping in a bidirectional and iterative fashion (e.g., Rittle-Johnson & Schneider, 2014 Rittle-Johnson, B., & Schneider, M. However, the very constructs of conceptual and procedural knowledge (especially procedural knowledge) have been critiqued for inconsistency in definition and lack of operationalization (Star, 2007 Sherin, B. The analysis in this article addresses this critique by modeling the diverse forms of conceptual and procedural knowledge needed to implement a strategy as a complex knowledge system: a strategy system. Furthermore, the strategy system model is used to elaborate processes of mutual bootstrapping between conceptual and procedural knowledge at a moment-by-moment time scale. This paper presents a research-based conceptual model respectively linking three dimensions of religious experience (religious practices, spiritual beliefs, and faith community) with three dimensions of health (biological, psychological, and social). The model is used as a framework to highlight findings in the religion-health knowledge base and to provide a broad survey of this domain of inquiry. To provide a better conceptual understanding and to stimulate further research, A. Kearney-Cooke and R. H. Striegel-Moore (1994) proposed several theoretical models concerning the relationship between sexual abuse and eating disorders. In this study, we tested the model that hypothesized an indirect relationship between sexual abuse and eating disorders, with the effects of sexual abuse being mediated through bodily shame and body disparagement. Three hundred thirty female undergraduates from a large southwestern public university participated. The women represented the social class of the university, which is predominantly middle to upper-middle class. Race/ethnicity of the participants was 69.8% Caucasian, 15.9% African American, 5.8% Latino/Mexican American, 4.9% Asian American, and 0.9% Native American; the remainder did not indicate their race/ethnicity. Of the total sample, 60% reported having been sexually abused at some point in their lives; 21% had experienced abuse prior to age 14. Almost 8% were categorized as having a diagnosable eating disorder, whereas another 72.7% were symptomatic. To test the hypothesized model, structural equation modeling with LISREL 8.3 (K. G. Joreskog & G. Sorbom, 1999) was used. Results indicated that the model fit the data well and the hypothesized relationships among the variables were in the expected directions. Sexual abuse predicted higher levels of bodily shame that, in turn, predicted increases in body disparagement. As expected, only body disparagement directly predicted eating disorder symptoms. Directions for future research are discussed.  相似文献

Infants and young children of parents in the military deserve special attention because the first years of life are pivotal in establishing trusting attachment relationships, which are based on the developmental expectation that parents will be reliably available and protective both physically and emotionally. For young children in military families, the stresses of extended absences of mothers and/or fathers as the result of deployment abroad, recurrent separations and reunions resulting from repeated deployments, or parents struggling with the emotional sequelae of their war experiences, and the traumatic impact of parental injury and death can strain and derail the normative expectation of parental availability and protectiveness. This article describes the key features of mental health in infancy and early childhood, the developmentally expectable early anxieties that all children experience in the first years of life across cultures and circumstances, and the ways in which these normative anxieties are exacerbated by the specific circumstances of military families. The article also describes interventions that may be helpful in supporting military families and their children with the specific challenges they face.  相似文献

This paper presents a new approach to the design and implementation of community change efforts like a System of Care. Called the ABLe Change Framework, the model provides simultaneous attention to the content and process of the work, ensuring effective implementation and the pursuit of systems change. Three key strategies are employed in this model to ensure the integration of content and process efforts and effective mobilization of broad scale systems change: Systemic Action Learning Teams, Simple Rules, and Small Wins. In this paper we describe the ABLe Change Framework and present a case study in which we successfully applied this approach to one system of care effort in Michigan.  相似文献

Abstract

The idea of philosophy as a kind of therapy, though by no means standard, has been present in metaphilosophical reflection since antiquity. Diverse versions of it were also discussed and applied by more recent authors such as Wittgenstein, Hadot and Foucault. In order to develop an explicit, general and systematic model of therapeutic philosophy a relatively broad and well-structured account provided by Martha Nussbaum is subjected to analysis. The results obtained, subsequently, form a basis for a new model constructed around the set of notions intrinsically connected with any, philosophical, psychological, or medical, form of therapy. The conceptual framework of: disease and its symptoms, the health ideal, the process of treatment with its techniques, therapeutic theory, physician, patient, and the physician-patient relationship is constructed and investigated in the context of its possible metaphilosophical use. An illustrative application of this scheme to philosophical therapy developed by Stoicism is, then, discussed. Finally, the issue of the therapeutic metaphilosophy's scope as well as the problem of therapeutic philosophy's specificity and integrity are briefly indicated.  相似文献

Although there has been a proliferation of models of supervision in the marriage and family therapy literature recently, most tend to focus on methods rather than on the process of supervision. The model presented here is grounded in developmental concepts and focuses on student learning through a dialectical process of cognitive and emotional growth and incorporates three stages: 1) developing relationships; 2) breaking impasses, and 3) orchestrating changes. Students discover that supervision becomes isomorphic with relationship issues that arise in their therapy sessions. Dialectical in nature in that each stage is characterized by the resolution of contradictory emotions, the supervision process helps supervisees experience emotional shifts in their interactions with others, referred to as emotional restructuring.  相似文献
