Ponzo illusion has been explained by considering either just the inducing elements present in a restricted area of the visual field, the same area in which the test elements are located, or the stimulus configuration as a whole in which even the most distal figural elements – i.e., the external converging lines, here called “Ponzo wedge”– play a crucial role. The two studies reported here aimed at showing that both global configurational characteristics and inducing elements locally interacting with the test stimuli can independently affect the illusory effect. This hypothesis was tested using stimuli in which graphic-inducing elements giving rise to a herringbone pattern (Coren & Girgus, 1978) were drawn in the same area of the test segments. Results of Exp. 1 confirmed the effect of the two factors. In particular, both factors proved to determine the illusion, since they induced illusory effects either in isolation or in the same/opposite direction. In Exp. 2 the relative weight of these two factors was evaluated in relation to the width of the angle of the inducing elements and to the distance of the test segments from the vertex. Results showed no linear relationships between the distance of the test segments from the external inducing elements and the weight of the Ponzo wedge factor. Brief trains of pulsed stimuli were used to assess whether magnocellular or parvocellular visual pathways could be differentiated perceptually. Trains of either one to four sine-wave, square-wave, or checkerboard gratings were presented at three temporal and two spatial frequencies to six observers. The task of the observer was to report the perceived number of stimuli (gratings) in a train. The difference between actual number and perceived number of gratings was recorded as an error score. It was found that neither the pattern nor the spatial frequency of the gratings significantly affected perceptual accuracy. On the other hand, the number of gratings in a train and the interstimulus interval between gratings produced significant differences. Perceptual accuracy was greater when lower numbers of gratings in a train were presented with longer interstimulus intervals. The observers typically reported fewer stimuli than were presented. The source of the discrepancy is discussed in terms of a light adaptive process initiated in the retina.  相似文献

Low-frequency filtering and the processing of local-global stimuli   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
The role of low-spatial-frequency information in the processing of global stimuli made up of local elements was examined. After selective removal of low spatial frequencies two major changes occurred in the pattern of results. First, response times to global stimuli were significantly slower and the usual speed advantage of global over local processing was lost. Second, when processing local features the usual decrease in response speed when the local and global letters are not the same (consistency effect) was not obtained. These effects could not be explained by changes in error rate, by contrast variation resulting from the process of filtering, or by loss of visual sensitivity due to greater eccentricity of global images.  相似文献

The present study was aimed at investigating whether, because of a differential sensitivity between the upper and the lower visual fields, in a visual preference task newborns would orient more frequently and look longer at patterns with a great number of high–contrast areas in the upper or lower visual field. Newborns were presented with three pairs of geometrical stimuli, each composed of a pattern with a greater number of elements in the upper part or a pattern with more elements in the lower part. The results showed a reliable preference for the stimuli that had more elements in the upper than in the lower part. The evidence obtained suggests the possibility that, at birth, the visibility of a stimulus depends not only on its sensory properties, but also on its structural characteristics.  相似文献

Subjects were required to identify vibrotactile patterns presented to their fingertips. The patterns, letters of the alphabet, were presented singly or in the presence of other vibrotactile masking stimuli. Two types of masking stimuli were used: an energy masker and a pattern masker. The effectiveness of these two types of maskers in interfering with letter recognition was tested, using them as forward and as backward maskers and presenting them at several different levels of intensity. The results showed more masking by the pattern masker, more backward than forward masking, and more masking as intensity increased. In addition, compared with the energy masker, the pattern masker showed both a greater difference between forward and backward masking and a greater increase in masking as masker intensity increased. The results are discussed in terms of a two-factor model of vibrotactfle masking.  相似文献

Several studies have shown that visual attention enhances the encoding of the positional relationships between pattern elements, i.e., the perception of pattern structure. This theoretical note discusses the possibility that the inferiority of extrafoveal vision in the perception of pattern structure results, at least partially, from less effective focal attention in the periphery. Hence, there may exist higher level differences between foveal and extrafoveal vision in information processing which cannot be explained by the spatial inhomogeneity of the retino-striate system.  相似文献

In a series of experiments, the effects of spatial layout on vibrotactile pattern perception were explored by testing the ability to discriminate between two sequentially presented patterns that share active elements in the same spatial locations. Two-dimensional displays were used in order to examine the functional relationship between discrimination performance and patterncommunality, defined as the sharing elements, on different body sites. Accuracy of discrimination judgments was inversely proportional to communality, regardless of the number of pattern elements. For compact arrays fitted to the finger, palm, and thigh, the effects of communality appeared equivalent. The similarity between finger and thigh functions is remarkable, considering the dramatic differences between these sites in receptor components and structure. When these data were compared with those from arrays with distributed contactors, performance was substantially better with well-separated pattern elements. Such findings help to explicate how information from apposed patterns can best be delivered to the skin through tactile communication systems.  相似文献

The effect of run order in different substructures of a pattern on binary pattern learning is investigated. Thirty-six subjects learned binary patterns by the serial anticipation method. Run lengths and order of the runs in odd and even numbered positions respectively were systematically varied. Latency times of anticipation, prediction errors and number of presentations to a criterion indicated that the order of runs in odd numbered position has a greater effect on grasping the pattern than the order of runs in even numbered position. This effect is explained by the particular phenomenal dominance relationship of the two substructures.  相似文献

In four experiments, the effect of the semantic relationship between test and inducing stimuli on the magnitude of size contrast in an Ebbinghaus-type illusion was explored. In Experiments 1 and 2, the greatest illusion was found when test and inducing stimuli were identical in shape and differed only in size. Decreased size contrast was found when inducing stimuli were drawn from the same category as the test stimulus, but were not visually identical. Even less size contrast was found when inducing stimuli were from a near conceptual category, with the least effect when they were drawn from a completely different category. In Experiment 3, it was demonstrated that even if test and inducing stimuli are drawn with identical geometric elements, the size contrast illusion is greatly reduced if they represent apparently different conceptual categories (through the manipulation of orientation and perceptual set). In Experiment 4, any geometric or spatial confounds were ruled out. These results suggest that size contrast is strongly influenced by the conceptual similarity between test and inducing stimuli.  相似文献

It has been postulated that as the number of axes of symmetry in a pattern increases, so pattern 'goodness' increases. Recently, a distinction was made between two different theoretical accounts of regularity or 'goodness' in relation to patterns with mirror symmetry: the 'transformational' and the 'holographic' models. It was argued that the former predicts a 'goodness' ordering of four > three > two > one whereas the latter predicts four > two > three > one, where '>' means greater regularity or goodness. In three experiments, we have tested these predictions. In experiment 1, we measured percentage correct and reaction time to dot patterns which had one, two, three, or four axes of symmetry and were flashed for 150 ms. Experiment 2 was identical except that patterns were presented for 2000 ms. In experiment 3, dot patterns were replaced by solid shapes which also had one, two, three, or four axes of symmetry. Although it was found that stimuli with four axes clearly allowed superior performance to that of stimuli with one axis, results obtained with stimuli with two and three axes were almost identical and in between those obtained with one and four axes. The data thus support the suggestion that extra axes add 'goodness' to symmetrical patterns but not in a monotonic fashion.  相似文献

Two modes of generating vibrotactile patterns, static and scanned, were examined. In the static mode, all elements making up the pattern were turned on and off simultaneously. In the scanned mode, the pattern to be identified was moved across the tactile array. The patterns were letters of the alphabet presented to the fingertips by means of the Optacon, a reading aid for the blind. The results of the first experiment showed that the performance on a letter recognition task decreased as pattern duration decreased and that at all durations below 200-msec performance in the static mode was better than in the scanned mode. Good letter recognition was possible at durations of 4 msec in the static mode. The results of the second experiment showed that letter recognition in the static mode was highly dependent on the perceived intensity of the letters presented, whereas intensity changes in the scanned mode had little effect on letter recognition. The results of the third experiment showed that both modes of pattern presentation produced similar results in the presence of masking stimuli. The implications of the results for cutaneous pattern perception and information transmission and visual letter recognition are discussed.  相似文献

The purpose of these experiments was to illustrate how a search for positional relationships between the elements in a stimulus pattern is effortful and serial, whereas a search for pattern elements (without requiring any positional information) takes place rapidly and in parallel. In all three experiments of this study, the target and distractor patterns consisted of two vertical line segments. In the experiment concerning the search for positional relationships between pattern elements, one of the line segments in a line pair had a gap, and the observer's task was to indicate whether the positional order of the two lines was identical in all the line pairs of the display, or whether the line segments were in a mirror-image order in one line pair (the target). In the two experiments concerning the search for pattern elements (no positional information was required), the observer's task was to look for a line pair with one gap line (the target) among line pairs containing two broken lines or among line pairs with unbroken lines. In all three tasks, the reaction time for a correct target detection was measured. The results showed that the search in the first task was highly serial, and in the second and third tasks of "feature" searches, the search time was nearly independent of the number of distractor pairs. It is suggested that this dissociation may be interpreted in the context of the quality of information processing in extrafoveal vision, i. e. the elements of a stimulus pattern can be clearly visible outside the fovea, but it is not possible to perceive accurately the positional relationships between them.  相似文献

Two experiments examined how affective values from visual and auditory modalities are integrated. Experiment 1 paired music and videos drawn from three levels of valence while holding arousal constant. Experiment 2 included a parallel combination of three levels of arousal while holding valence constant. In each experiment, participants rated their affective states after unimodal and multimodal presentations. Experiment 1 revealed a congruency effect in which stimulus combinations of the same extreme valence resulted in more extreme state ratings than component stimuli presented in isolation. An interaction between music and video valence reflected the greater influence of negative affect. Video valence was found to have a significantly greater effect on combined ratings than music valence. The pattern of data was explained by a five parameter differential weight averaging model that attributed greater weight to the visual modality and increased weight with decreasing values of valence. Experiment 2 revealed a congruency effect only for high arousal combinations and no interaction effects. This pattern was explained by a three parameter constant weight averaging model with greater weight for the auditory modality and a very low arousal value for the initial state. These results demonstrate key differences in audiovisual integration between valence and arousal.  相似文献

Temporal integration has been cited as a major factor in temporal masking. Two experiments were designed to examine the conditions under which temporal integration may aid or hinder the perception of vibrotactile spatial patterns. In Experiment 1, the subject’s task was to discriminate between pairs of patterns. Each pattern was composed of two temporally separated pattern elements. When the task required the subjects to perceive the individual pattern elements, performance improved with temporal isolation—that is, performance improved as the temporal separation between the elements increased. In a second task, when the discrimination could be based on either the overall pattern shape or the pattern elements, temporal integration appeared to improve performance—that is, performance improved as the temporal separation decreased. In Experiment 2, an identification task was used. Several factors appeared to determine whether temporal integration aided or hindered pattern identification. When pattern elements similar to those in Experiment 1 were tested, performance improved with increasing temporal separation (isolation). A single function was fit to the discrimination (isolation) and identification (isolation) results. Whether temporal integration aids or hinders pattern perception appears to depend on pattern shape, the pattern elements, and the nature of the task.  相似文献

Enumeration can be accomplished by subitizing, counting, estimation, and combinations of these processes. We investigated whether the dissociation between subitizing and counting can be observed in 4‐ to 6‐year‐olds and studied whether the maximum number of elements that can be subitized changes with age. To detect a dissociation between subitizing and counting, it is tested whether task manipulations have different effects in the subitizing than in the counting range. Task manipulations concerned duration of presentation of elements (limited, unlimited) and configuration of elements (random, line, dice). In Study 1, forty‐nine 4‐ and 5‐year‐olds were tested with a computerized enumeration task. Study 2 concerned data from 4‐, 5‐, and 6‐year‐olds, collected with Math Garden, a computer‐adaptive application to practice math. Both task manipulations affected performance in the counting, but not the subitizing range, supporting the conclusion that children use two distinct enumeration processes in the two ranges. In all age groups, the maximum number of elements that could be subitized was three. The strong effect of configuration of elements suggests that subitizing might be based on a general ability of pattern recognition.  相似文献

Three experiments were carried out to investigate the hypothesis that the impression of visual depth given by gradient patterns is due to the operation of a principle of “perceptual economy.” The first experiment showed that the greater the number of values of the gradient variables in a pattern, the stronger was the tridimensional impression given by that pattern. The second showed that the greater the number of gradient variables, the less the amount of the pattern that had to be exposed before a tridimensional response was elicited. The third showed that judged slants increased as a function of the number of gradient variables in each pattern. The results suggest that the impression of visual depth given by a pattern represents a compromise between the economy gained from making a tridimensional specification of the elements in the pattern and the possible cost of making an error in coding the information in this way.  相似文献

Visual discrimination of novel colors and patterns by one-month infants was studied in two experiments where visual reinforcers were presented contingent upon infants' rate of nonnutritive, high-amplitude sucking. Discrimination was measured by recovery of sucking to the presentation of novel visual reinforcing stimuli following decrements in sucking to familiar visual stimuli. In Expt 1, following decrement to familiar stimuli, independent groups received either a change in color, pattern, both color and pattern, or no stimulus change. Reliable recovery was demonstrated for the three stimulus novelty groups relative to the no-change control. Experiment 2, employing achromatic visual reinforcers also showed reliable recovery to pattern change relative to no-change controls. These findings with one-month infants indicate discrimination between familiar and novel visual reinforcers on the basis of color and pattern differences and an increase due to novelty in the reinforcing effectiveness of visual stimuli. Individual subject differences in response decrement magnitude during familiarization were positively correlated with amount of response recovery to novelty.  相似文献

The sequential patterning of complex acoustic elements is a salient feature of bird song and other forms of vocal communication. For European starlings (Sturnus vulgaris), a songbird species, individual vocal recognition is improved when the temporal organization of song components (called motifs) follows the normal patterns of each singer. This sensitivity to natural motif sequences may underlie observations that starlings can also learn more complex, unnatural motif patterns. Alternatively, it has been proposed that the apparent acquisition of abstract motif patterning rules instead reflects idiosyncrasies of the training conditions used in prior experiments. That is, that motif patterns are learned not by recognizing differences in temporal structures between patterns, but by identifying serendipitous features (e.g., acoustical cues) in the small sets of training and testing stimuli used. Here, we investigate this possibility, by asking whether starlings can learn to discriminate between two arbitrary motif patterns, when unique examples of each pattern are presented on every trial. Our results demonstrate that abstract motif patterning rules can be acquired from trial-unique stimuli and suggest that such training leads to better pattern generalization compared with training with much smaller stimulus subsets.  相似文献

This experiment investigated 4 methods of inducing visual noise at 7 levels of noise. Fortysix Ss were presented 4800 sets of 3 pattems, with the task of judging which of 2 noisy patterns was more similar to the prototype pattern. The noisy patterns were generated by adding, moving, deleting or both adding and deleting elements of the prototype. All possible comparisons of each noise method were made at each noise level and the results plotted. The results show that the various methods of introducing noise do not produce identical results, and that the similarity assessment is dependent on noise koel. Explanations are offered to account for the results.  相似文献

Tilt illusions occur when a drifting vertical test grating is surrounded by a drifting plaid pattern composed of orthogonal moving gratings. The angular function of this illusion was measured as the plaid orientation (and therefore its drift direction) varied over a 180 degrees range. This was done when the test and inducing stimuli abutted and had the same spatial frequency, and when the test and inducing stimuli either differed in frequency by an octave, or were spatially separated by a 2 deg blank annulus, or both differed in frequency and were also separated by the annulus (experiments 1-4). The obtained angular function was virtually identical to that obtained previously with the rod and frame effect and other cases involving orthogonal inducing components, with evidence for illusions induced both by real-line components and by virtual axes of symmetry. Although the magnitude of the illusion was very similar in all four experiments, there was evidence to suggest that largest real-line effects occurred in the abutting same-frequency condition, with a pattern of results similar to that obtained previously with the simple one-dimensional tilt illusion. On the other hand, virtual-axis effects were more prominent with gaps between test and inducing stimuli. A fifth, repeated-measures, experiment confirmed this pattern of results. It is suggested that this pattern-induced tilt effect reflects both striate and extrastriate mechanisms and that the apparent influence of spatially distal virtual axes of symmetry upon perceived orientation implies the existence of AND-gate mechanisms, or conjunction detectors, in the orientation domain.  相似文献
