Many who believe that human embryos have moral status are convinced that their use in human embryonic stem cell (hESC) research
can be morally justified as long as they are discarded embryos left over from fertility treatments. This is one reason why
this view about discarded embryos has played such a prominent role in the debate over publicly funding hESC research in the
United States and other countries. Many believe that this view offers the best chance of a compromise between the different
sides in this debate. This paper focuses on what seems to be the most plausible argument for this view about discarded embryos.
It shows that this argument is unsound regardless of how one understands the claim that embryos have moral status. It also
discusses the implications of this conclusion for attempts to use this argument as a basis for public policy.

Relatively little is known about the factor structure of disruptive behavior among preadolescent girls. The present study
reports on exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses of disruptive girl behavior over four successive data waves as rated
by parents and teachers in a large, representative community sample of girls (N = 2,451). Five factors were identified from parent ratings (oppositional behavior/conduct problems, inattention, hyperactivity/impulsivity,
relational aggression, and callous-unemotional behaviors), and four factors were identified derived from teacher ratings (oppositional
behavior/conduct problems/callous-unemotional behaviors, inattention, hyperactivityimpulsivity, and relational aggression).
There was a high degree of consistency of items loading on equivalent factors across parent and teacher ratings. Year-to-year
stability of factors between ages five and 12 was high for parent ratings (ICC = 0.70 to 0.88), and slightly lower for teacher
ratings (ICC = 0.56 to 0.83). These findings are discussed in terms of possible adjustment to the criteria for children's
disruptive behavior disorders found in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders.

special issue constitutes the proceedings. We elaborate on historical and empirical aspects of the desired new epistemology,

foundation restricted to truths about our internal states. Against Williamson and others I defend the claim that the internal

This paper offers two new arguments for a version of Reflection, the principle that says, roughly, that if one knew now what
one would believe in the future, one ought to believe it now. The most prominent existing argument for the principle is the
coherence-based Dutch Strategy argument advanced by Bas van Fraassen (and others). My two arguments are quite different. The
first is a truth-based argument. On the basis of two substantive premises, that people’s beliefs generally get better over
time and that being a person requires having knowledge of this fact, it concludes that it is rational to treat your future
selves as experts. The second argument is a transcendental one. Being a person requires being able to engage in plans and
projects. But these cannot be meaningfully undertaken unless one has Reflection-like expectations about one’s future beliefs.
Hence, satisfaction of Reflection is necessary for being a person. Together, the arguments show that satisfaction of Reflection
is both rational and necessary for persons.

Perceptual processes play a central role in the planning and control of human voluntary action. Indeed, planning an action is a sensorimotor process operating on sensorimotor units, a process that is based on anticipations of perceptual action effects. I discuss how the underlying sensorimotor units emerge, and how they can be employed to tailor action plans to the goals at hand. I also discuss how even a single action can induce sensorimotor binding, how intentionally implemented short-term associations between stimuli and responses become autonomous, how feature overlap between stimulus events and actions makes them compatible, and why action plans are necessarily incomplete.

In this paper we discuss visualizations in mathematics from a historical and didactical perspective. We consider historical
debates from the 17th and 19th centuries regarding the role of intuition and visualizations in mathematics. We also consider
the problem of what a visualization in mathematical learning can achieve. In an empirical study we investigate what mathematical
conclusions university students made on the basis of a visualization. We emphasize that a visualization in mathematics should
always be considered in its proper context.

The relationships of voluntary retirement and organizational turnover intentions to various commitment constructs in work
and non-work settings were examined using a sample of 345 employees near retirement age (mean age = 53.71). The results demonstrated
that work centrality and commitment to leisure activities were unique predictors of retirement intentions, while affective
organizational commitment predicted turnover intentions but not retirement. Occupational commitment was a significant predictor
of both retirement and turnover. The implications for revising the definition of work-role attachment theory and further developing
a theoretical model to explain retirement decisions are also discussed.

In “Control, Responsibility, and Moral Assessment” Angela Smith defends her nonvoluntarist theory of moral responsibility
against the charge that any such view is shallow because it cannot capture the depth of judgments of responsibility. Only
voluntarist positions can do this since only voluntarist positions allow for control. I argue that Smith is able to deflect
the voluntarists’ criticism, but only with further resources. As a voluntarist, I also concede that Smith’s thesis has force,
and I close with a compromise position, one that allows for direct moral responsibility for the nonvoluntary, but also incorporates
a reasonable control condition.

We re-evaluate the relation between cantonal direct democracy and perceived subjective well-being in Switzerland using new
data from the Swiss Household Panel. In addition, this study goes beyond previous work by carefully controlling for cultural
determinants of happiness such as languages and religion. We find that once language is controlled for, no robust significant
relationship between the extent of direct democracy and life satisfaction can be observed. The results also show that direct
democracy does not affect well-being within language groups in Switzerland.

This paper presents computational experiments that illustrate how one can precisely conceptualize language evolution as a
Darwinian process. We show that there is potentially a wide diversity of replicating units and replication mechanisms involved
in language evolution. Computational experiments allow us to study systemic properties coming out of populations of linguistic
replicators: linguistic replicators can adapt to specific external environments; they evolve under the pressure of the cognitive
constraints of their hosts, as well as under the functional pressure of communication for which they are used; one can observe
neutral drift; coalitions of replicators may appear, forming higher level groups which can themselves become subject to competition
and selection.

This paper begins with a critical part and concludes with a constructive part. First, with reference to a definition of liberalism
and using immanent critique, I show deficiencies in the claims of four selfprofessed postliberals to have articulated non-liberal
positions. Then, I argue that postliberal political theory consists in acknowledging that in political contexts some voluntary
groups as such can be moral, not merely political, agents. Analysis of what moral autonomy is for persons as empirical (not
noumenal) agents reveals that that account can be transposed to some groups. A key common element among the four rejected
positions is their emphasis on the normative authority of some practices as over against principles. My proposal congeals
that normative emphasis on the social into group-moral authority. Recognition of some voluntary groups’ episodic moral authority
over their members is non-liberal but not anti-liberal.
