Demonstrations of retrospective revaluation suggest that remembered stimuli undergo a reduction in association with the unconditioned stimulus (US) present during learning. Conversely, demonstrations of mediated conditioning in flavor-conditioning experiments with rats suggest that remembered stimuli undergo an increase in association with the US present during learning. In a food allergy prediction task with 23 undergraduates, we demonstrated simultaneous backward conditioned inhibition and mediated conditioning effects. These results are compatible with the hypothesis that the direction of change (decrease or increase) in associative strength depends on whether the remembered stimulus was of a different category (conditioned stimulus/antecedent) or the same category (US/outcome) as the presented US.  相似文献

Three autoshaping experiments, using pigeon subjects, examined the effect of presenting an S+ or an S- on acquisition to a different conditioned stimulus (CS). Experiment 1 found that signalling intertrial food with an S+ or an S- allowed acquisition of responding to the target-CS; however, that acquisition was slower when the signal was the S+. Experiment 2 found that even when the S+ or S- were presented without food in the intertrial interval, acquisition was slower in the group receiving the S+. Experiment 3 found that a similar, but weaker effect occurred when the S+ or S- stimuli were presented in the session prior to target-CS training, rather than intermixed. These results have implications for the interpretation of experiments that use a signalling manipulation to assess the interaction of CS and context in Pavlovian conditioning; they suggest that signalling unconditioned stimuli (USs) may have consequences other than that of modulating context-US learning.  相似文献

Two experiments with rat subjects used a variety of transfer tests to examine the associations learned when Pavlovian inhibition is established by an A+, AX− paradigm. Experiment 1 found in a conditioned suppression situation that inhibition conditioned to X with one exciter (A) readily transferred to another exciter (B) which had been paired with the same shock US. Transfer occurred even when the response to A had been extinguished prior to testing with B. However, X did not inhibit a general activity response produced by a B which had been subsequently paired with a food US. Experiment 2 employed a Pavlovian conditioning situation in which A and B, when separately paired with the same food US, evoked dissimilar responses. Nevertheless, an inhibitor trained in an A+, AX− paradigm successfully inhibited the different response evoked by B. However, such an X did not inhibit the behaviors acquired by A or B when they were subsequently paired with a shock US. The transfer of Pavlovian inhibition across conditioned stimuli and responses but not across unconditioned stimuli is consistent with the notion that a conditioned inhibitor acts to prevent activation of a US representation which would normally be activated by conditioned exciters.  相似文献

Inhibitory models of working memory efficiency (Engle, 1996; Zacks & Hasher, 1994) assert that individual differences in working memory reflect the efficiency of inhibitory processes that exclude irrelevant information and suppress no-longer-relevant information. The present study examined the implication that these two inhibitory processes operate at consistent levels of efficiency within individuals by examining the correlation between two cognitive inhibition effects, negative priming and negative error priming. Negative priming involves slower response to a probe-trial target that was used as a to-be-ignored distractor on the immediately preceding prime trial. Negative error priming is the phenomenon that errors in a sequence of simple arithmetic trials are unlikely to involve the correct answer to the preceding problem. Participants received distractor-target pairs of simple addition problems and were required to produce the target problem sum. Negative priming was observed for prime distractors, whereas negative error priming was observed in connection with previous targets but not distractors. Consistent with the assumptions of these working memory models, the magnitudes of the two effects were significantly correlated.  相似文献

Three experiments assessed retention of conditioned fear and of fear inhibition over long-term retention intervals (35 days in two experiments, 25 days in the third). Although excitatory conditioning was retained well, conditioned inhibition was not. This effect occurred when inhibition was assessed by compounding stimuli on an appetitive baseline and when it was assessed by testing cues on a baseline of unsignalled avoidance responding. Inhibition was also forgotten when the initial conditioning treatment was designed to reduce the role of possible proactive interference processes.  相似文献

C. R. Gallistel and J. Gibbon (2000) presented quantitative data on the speed with which animals acquire behavioral responses during autoshaping, together with a statistical model of learning intended to account for them. Although this model captures the form of the dependencies among critical variables, its detailed predictions are substantially at variance with the data. In the present article, further key data on the speed of acquisition are used to motivate an alternative model of learning, in which animals can be interpreted as paying different amounts of attention to stimuli according to estimates of their differential reliabilities as predictors.  相似文献

The transfer of negative occasion setting and conditioned inhibition across conditioned stimuli (CSs) and unconditioned stimuli (USs) was examined in four experiments that used Pavlovian appetitive feature negative discrimination training procedures with rats. After training with simultaneous compounds (A+, XA-), X inhibited conditioned responding (CRs) elicited by other CSs and CRs supported by other appetitive USs that had not been involved in discrimination training. After training with serial compounds (A+, X----A-), X's power to set the occasion for nonresponding transferred across CSs and USs only if those events had also been involved in serial feature negative discrimination training. The results supported the suggestion that the acquisition of negative occasion setting involves the representation of individual events in a higher order memory system, separate from that involved in simple association, and that negative occasion setters act only on events that are represented in that system.  相似文献

Multiple-unit activity was recorded in the lateral septum of rats during Pavlovian differential conditioning. In Experiment 1, one group of animals received a classical aversive discrimination paradigm, while another group was presented with a control procedure in which the unconditioned stimuli (shocks) were administered randomly with regard to the conditioned stimuli. Septal unit activity increased during presentations of the conditioned inhibitor and was markedly suppressed during presentations of the conditioned excitor in the conditioning-group animals and not in the control animals. Baseline activity remained unchanged in the conditioning group but was suppressed in the random control group. Furthermore, termination of the aversive stimuli was marked by a burst of firing in the conditioning group, but no such rebound was seen in the control group. In Experiment 2, a classical appetitive discrimination paradigm was given, in which septal unit activity was found to increase in the presence of the conditioned excitor and was suppressed in the presence of the conditioned inhibitor. The results are interpreted as indicating a role for the septum in the relief of aversive states.  相似文献

This experiment was designed to investigate the importance of autoshaping to a signal for reinforcement in the production of behavioural contrast. Two groups of pigeons were given discrimination training on a mult VI-EXT schedule: the stimuli present in the two schedule components shared common attributes, but were distinguished by the presence or absence of a visual feature. For one group (the feature positive group) the feature signalled the availability of reinforcement. For the other group (the feature negative group) the feature signalled nonrein-forcement, and for this group there was no stimulus element which unambiguously signalled reinforcement. The feature positive group showed a higher response rate during the VI component of the mult VI-EXT schedule than the feature negative group. This finding was interpreted as support for the autoshaping explanation of behavioural contrast. The results differed from those of Jenkins and Sainsbury (1969, 1970) in that both the feature positive and the feature negative groups showed discrimination learning.  相似文献

Two experiments are reported which investigated the conditioning of inhibition to a neutral stimulus as a result of its repeated pairing with a previouslyconditioned inhibitor. Both experiments employed a conditioned suppression technique with rat subjects. Experiment 1 detected the second-order inhibition through the retarded acquisition of concurrently administered excitatory conditioning. Experiment 2 found similar retardation in the acquisition of excitatory fear conditioning following previous second-order conditioning of inhibition to the stimulus. Implications are discussed for theories of the nature of inhibition and for second-order conditioning as an assessment technique.  相似文献

Twelve dogs salivated to a tone that was followed by food, but not to a noise for which there was an added response dependency. The noise was followed by food if and only if they did not salivate. The addition of this response dependency vitiated the classically conditioned response to the noise. A yoked-control group of 6 dogs receiving the same sequences of stimuli and food salivated to both the tone and noise stimuli.  相似文献

Rats were trained in an operant discrimination involving two panel lights, A and B. Group CI (Conditioned Inhibition) was trained to lever press in the presence of A (S+), and not in the presence of the compound AB (S?). The opposite contingencies held in Group CE (Conditioned Excitation). Response rates were higher in Group CE than in Group CI, especially to the positive stimulus. However, the groups acquired the discrimination at comparable rates. In a separate phase of the experiment, a tone (C) was separately trained in the absence of the lights to control responding. All seven possible combinations of A, B, and C were then presented randomly during extinction. The inhibitory effect of B on C in Group CI was comparable in magnitude to the excitatory effect of B on C in Group CE. B's effect on C was not altered by the presence or absence of A, regardless of whether A was inhibitory or excitatory. The symmetry between CI and CE revealed by the stimulus-compounding test may be partly artifactual.  相似文献

Two experiments with rats as subjects were conducted to investigate the associative structure of temporal control of conditioned inhibition through posttraining manipulation of the training excitor-unconditioned stimulus (US) temporal relationship. Experiment 1 found that following simultaneous Pavlovian inhibition training (i.e., A --> US/XA-no US) in which a conditioned stimulus (CS A) was established as a delay excitor, maximal inhibition was observed on a summation test when CS X was compounded with a delay transfer CS. Furthermore, posttraining shifts in the A-US temporal relationship from delay to trace resulted in maximal inhibition of a trace transfer CS. Experiment 2 found complementary results to Experiment 1 with an A-US posttraining shift from serial to simultaneous. These results suggest that temporal control of inhibition is mediated by the training excitor-US temporal relationship.  相似文献

Electric shock was used to establish a conditioned fear in 48 college Ss, who then received either deep muscle relaxation training, cognitive relaxation training or anxiety relief conditioning. Relaxation was conditioned to a slide of the word NOW and the aversive stimulus was a pure red slide. The compound stimulus NOW on a red background was presented to generate counterconditioning, followed by a re-presentation of pure red as a measure of transfer. GSR and Blood Volume Pulse were recorded for evaluation of the fear reduction generated by each training procedure. All group differences were non-significant. The two relaxation procedures were equally effective, while the Anxiety Relief group manifested consistently smaller response-reduction. Implications and the usefulness of the paradigm were discussed.  相似文献
